Gia sighed coming back into the classroom from duty. They shook the rain from their hair and took in the mess in front of them. Every table was littered with supplies not in their caddies, paint spilling from tubes, broken crayons and markers left without their lids.

They’re an art teacher, they’re no stranger to mess but one of this caliber caused by the fact that none of their classes seemed to listen to any directions they gave all day made them feel like they wanted to cry. They knew it likely had something to do with the pouring rain today and the lack of outdoor recess the kids got, but it still didn’t make them feel any better, so they fired off a text in the groupchat with Kendall and Synthia and got to work cleaning up the daunting mess.

Gia: you guys can head home without me, I have a huge mess to clean up in the art room. I’ll take the bus later, love you both💗

They set their phone down and missed the string of texts between Kendall and Synthia while they cleaned but not more than five minutes later, Synthia stormed into the room, Emerald in tow.

“Emmy,” Synthia said softly, leaning down to their daughter’s level, “will you help Nonny by picking up all the stuff on the floor for them?”

Emerald saluted her and scurried off to start picking up papers and crayons and whatever else found it’s way to the floor.

“Synth-“

“Nope, you go sit. Em and I will clean, Kendall’s on her way too. Just sit down, if your classes were anything like mine today then you need the rest.”

Gia flushed but sat obediently on their desk, kicking their feet slightly while they watched their partner and daughter clean up.

“If your kids were hard today, how come you don’t need to rest too?” Gia wondered aloud.

Synthia looked up at them and smiled softly. “Baby, it looks like maybe it was worse in here.”

Before they had a chance to respond, Kendall walked in, her eyes wide. “Jesus, what happened in here?”

“Oh you know, art supply warfare apparently,” Gia said dryly, “I just had no handle on anything today. Everything I said it felt like I was saying it to an empty room, I threatened referrals, I took away scissors, I threatened a silent clsss period, I tried it all!”

“I wish I knew how to help you more but I couldn’t teach anything below juniors. Even freshman and sophomore’s scare me,” Kendall replied with a shudder, getting to work scrubbing the dried paint off the tables.

“You know what really helps me on days when they’re a bit wild? Making everything into a game. I pretty much scrap whatever lesson plans I had for the day and take whatever skill they should be working on and making it into a game. It’s not always going to be your most effective teaching practice but for hard days, it gets me through. Set high expectations for said game like if a student is yelling, then they sit out for a round and adhere to those expectations. Then the next day, pick up where you left off with your plans and just try again. I think it’s really important to be flexible with things. The rain wasn’t even in the forecast this morning so we couldn’t plan around it so we have to be flexible and adapt.”

Kendall nodded in agreement. “I wouldn’t know what to do with either of your classes for even a second, but we have to be just as flexible in high school sometimes too. Just last week I was halfway through a lesson on Romeo and Juliet and I look up and realize half my class is asleep so we finished the period with a game of Kahoot, you know that quiz game? I’m sure you could find some for color theory or types of lines, whatever you’re working on in art!”

“Yeah, you’re both right. Thank you. You give great advice.”

“Hey, it’s no problem,” Synthia replied, placing the last of the discarded supplies in their designated area, “you help us lots too.”

“Yep, my room would be bare without those book cover posters you did for me,” Kendall said.

“And I wouldn’t have half the arts and crafts ideas that I have without you!”

Gia giggled. “I love you guys.”

They opened their arms for a hug and everyone piled in, Synthia, Kendall, then Em right in the middle.

honestly one of the greatest joys of speaking another language is surprising people who assume you can’t understand them xD

like i was in cadets yeah? and every summer i’d go stay on a military base for training, and ofc there’re people from all over the country there. so at one point a few guys in the flight as well as our officer are talking & they realize they all speak french so they switch languages right? 

well i was doing something nearby & lowkey eavesdropping—i would’ve joined in but i can’t hold a conversation at a fluent pace so i didn’t bother, but i was having fun trying to understand what they were saying—when the officer, who was usually very strict and proper, says “tabarnak,” which is basically the strongest curse word that exists in québécois (it literally means tabernacle, which is where the eucharist—the body and blood of christ—are stored in a catholic church, but is used kinda like the word fuck in english. all the strongest curse words in québec french are related to catholicism)

so i look at him with this huge exaggerated gasp & say “sir” in the most scandalized tone i can muster, and this poor man oh my god. he WHIPS AROUND to look at me with the most stricken expression on his face like “YOU SPEAK FRENCH?! WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING” and i just shrug and go “you didn’t ask”

ive been kind of unsatisfied with my grad school experience so far. im in a weird situation where like i went to school in canada and they do masters programs before applying to phds first there so i only applied to masters programs and then out of idk, emotional necessity basically (last semester of undergrad was kind of disastrously bad) i decided not to stay at my (pretty good, but intense) school in canada and instead go back to the US. and the masters program at a not very good (i mean, R1, but only kinda recently) school i applied to just offered me a phd slot so i went for it. but i dont really have a math community and it sucks. anyway this is all context, you may have already heard this.

i had assumed that like, i was kind of stuck here, that places arent interested in people jumping programs. but i just learned somebody in my program just jumped to a way higher ranked program. i mean not ivy league or anything, but good, top 50 math program. which makes me think like. shit. i might be able to do that. so then the question is. do i WANT to do that? idk. im already pretty advanced in the phd here, im planning to take my quals at the end of the year. so maybe it makes sense to just sorta bang out a phd. and then figure out what im doing. i like my advisor, ill be glad to go back to meeting with him in person soon. and finding an advisor you like is really hard. but also its gotten to the point where i wince whenever i hear the name of a high-ranked university. honestly i kind of did that in undergrad even tho my undergrad was really good. getting rejected from all my reaches stung (canada doesnt really "do" reaches, they just weed people out)

Oscar my good fellow, does your house include a fan system? how do you stay cool in the summer?

We don't have any built in fans! There is an aircon system but this is a rental that has remained largely unchanged since the 70s so it does not work, probably has not ever worked during this century. Ok so granted all the following will be from anecdotal experience, but as far as I can see this is how other houses in the area operate:

Well apparently the ideal Australian house has a metre wide wraparound porch and awning to keep the heat out. Don't think I've ever seen a house meet this, inner city at least. More rural areas maybe? And that is where they'd need it more

So to keep cool in the summer my house has a lot of tabletop fans and a big fan on a floor stand. Also use wet washers on the back of our necks and just experience general suffering. Most houses aren't well insulated for the cold or the heat!! Even tho our winters aren't nearly as bad as many places, my brother's gf from Siberia and my family that moved between here and Canada find Australian winters unbearable compared to the Russian or Canadian winters just bc the houses are barely warmer than the outside!! Often in the morning it's colder inside than out

A lot of houses (from anecdotal experience I would say maybe half? most new houses would) do have aircon tho, which is enough to keep things cold or warm enough. By aircons I mean these ones, units rather than built in ones

But houses do have the inbuilt aircons too, the nonfunctional one in my house has vents in each room like this (in ceilings other than the tile ones pictured here tho)

It's not uncommon but I'd say not a massive amount of houses have them? I think newer builds would be more likely to have these ones. Tho idk all new houses kinda look the same like. Wait I remember a further out gross looking suburb I'll find it on Google maps

this is like, 2 hours out from the CBD?? a lot of developments are popping up further out as the city expands. cheap* and uglay housing it reminds me of the american suburbs tbh

anyway. that is mostly unrelated to aircon and fans. yeah i dont think we have thermostats? at least i've never seen anyone call it that but im assuming the built in aircons work like that. bc they do can do heat or cool temperatures

i did have one friend who lived in a big house that had all three - an aircon unit in the parents room, inbuilt aircon throughout the house, and fans in most/every room. never seen that anywhere else tho and i considered her to be pretty rich, plus i'm sure they did renovate to include some of those.

yeah overall to stay cool in the summer people without aircon kinda. don't. i miss my first house with its aircon unit </3

Do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? somewhat prickly, probably. also three of the guys i've written have canonically gone "Oho!" and another three i like w some overlap in there are the 'closed eyes' type so... whatever that means. In general tho: I like muses with whom I can explore aspects of human personality I wouldn't necessarily venture into on my own. (certain brands of conflict, responsibility, etc)

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could?  idk i think if i really wanted to write a kind of char i probably. would. but i guess the 'much more like Actually Super Intelligent than i can realistically pretend at' would be it i suppose

A Hector near the end of his schooling arc might be neat (he's learned what he's came here for, he's ready to return to Ostia and do Uther and his people proud, and more competently than many mightve imagined at that) but. When that day comes he might really be actually going home soon lol.

I was wondering.. I've been trying to find books to read on "why communism is shit" to have a more solid foundation to rebuke idiot tankies when they start flapping their mouths.. but Google loves to only return shit like "why Lenín had so many good ideas" and utter garbage about why the Russian empire was great.. but I thought there has to be some Ukrainian authors with thoughts on the subject, and that maybe you'd know of a few?

My kneejerk response was to say "read Communist Manifesto" XD

But hey, that's an interesting question.

I think most of the times, at least in the popular discourse, we in Ukraine go the historic route: focusing on the specific crimes USSR commited against its citizens and explaining how it is connected to its economical/political structure. For example, The Red Famine, although flawed, explains how Holodomor was tied to dekulakization and the plan economy, which are the basic bricks on which the soviet experiment was built. I am currently reading The Hungry Steppe and it has been crazy useful in showcasing how the party has been using hauntingly similar tactics in both of our countries.

Based on the annotations, Stanislav Kulchytsky's "Червоний виклик" sounds like exactly the book you're looking for, but unfortunately, it's only avaliable in Ukrainian, which is an issue you'll probably be often running into...

Intuitively I expect that there is a plenty of professional literature that offers critical approach to communism from the point of view of economics/politology/philosophy... But not being interested in either of those topics, I don't feel confident enough giving out recommendations, since I don't know which works are considered the baseline and which highlight marginal thoughts...

As a guess, I'd try looking into books published by ukrainian diaspora communities, especially in Canada. They have been criticising USSR since forever, and typically have published themselves in English. However, due to the Iron Wall, this school of thought had little impact on the development of ukrainian discourse. (I was looking for works of Peter Baley, who seems to have been writing criticism of marxism from a philosophical standpoint, but all I managed to find online is this magazine from 1979)

If we do not limit ourselves to ukrainian authors, I have found recommendations of Marxism and the Leap to the Kingdom of Freedom by Andrzej Walicki

Though I have to say, with marxism being an economical theory you'd expect that hard-logic economical arguments would be the most persuasive, but in my experience tankies don't understand even the basic concepts of economy, so idk why you'd bother trying to play on their ground. I'll give you credit that learning new information and practicing debate are excellent brain food; but ideology is an emotional beast, and there is close to a zero chance deradicalizing somebody through an argument.
