Reading Triage (??)

I'm in a whirly-twirly-IDK-what-to-read mood and am throwing out TBR plans practically on the daily, so what if I simply made an enormous post full of titles that caught my eye in the last week and which I may or may not read soon.

1. Lock Every Door and/or The House Across the Lake - Riley Sager: I loved Home Before Dark (my thoughts are still percolating; I haven't forgotten your note, @kateschechterxthorwasmyfirstotp!), and I think that one will stay my fave, but these two look almost as appealing.

2. A Paris Apartment - Michelle Gable: because I keep thinking that Lucy Foley's mystery-thriller with almost the same title is based on that iconic real-life news story about the apartment that was left untouched since WWII full of beautiful art and heirlooms, and it's not, but this one is.

(it's not the only one either, but it's the one that got to me first and/or looks best. whether it actually is the best...hm, don't love this MC having a cheating husband whom she retaliates against by also cheating. why can she not be 34 and single instead)

3. The Paris Apartment - Kelly Bowen: this one is also about that! it looks like it is probably better but also. I am just So Tired of dual-timeline WWII novels in Europe.

4. The Apartment - S.L. Grey: I don't know a damn thing about this one or the author. It popped up when I searched Foley's book in the library catalog, because this apartment is also in Paris, but this one appears to be a horror/thriller and I immediately said "hell yeah place request." (update: I peeked at Goodreads. Ratings appear Bad. So...we'll see.)

5. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - John Berendt: idk what randomly put this book back into my brain, but it's one I remember seeing everywhere in used books for a while, and might even actually remember seeing in the 90s/early 2000s due to its iconic cover. I always dismissed it because "eh, adult book," but today I realized, oh yeah, I like adult books now sometimes, so I read the synopsis and it sounded pretty intriguing actually, and then I learned for the very first time it's actually nonfiction and not a novel?? So...maybe. Seems a good October read.

6?. The Work of Art - Mimi Matthews: I started the ebook assuming I could get the paperback from the library the next day, since it was checked in and reading on a screen sucks, but IT WASN'T ON THE SHELF WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. I placed a request to make them find it, and yet its status remains unchanged since 9/24, which I can only conclude means they have well and truly misplaced their only physical copy. >:( So fingers crossed they find it, because I simply will not make further progress on a computer screen with a book of this length.

7. Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries - Heather Fawcett: I keep forgetting about this and then being randomly reminded about it in BookTube videos. I tend to like this style of book (very A Natural History of Dragons), and it's one of the few ways a book with a faerie element can appeal to me.

8. The Echo of Old Books - Barbara Davis: Beautiful cover, antiquarian bookseller, sold.

All right, I think that's everything I've just collected or am in the process of calling in from the library...

24-HOURS-LATER UPDATE: would you believe that only books #2-4 are available to me right now? "Parisian apartments or NOTHING for you, Televinita," says the library, as all the other books are checked out right now (or lost), except #5, whose dense text and snoreful writing style immediately put me to sleep so that's gonna be a no. And I've already read the last book (about Tara) from yesterday's library triage post. I guess I still have Good As Gold... and the hundreds of unread books I own?? nah

So I hear that the symptoms of coronavirus include interest in making virtual visits of museums, apparently. Here are some museum websites that can fulfill your thirst for virtually-visitable art. The asterisk means I have been there. This is by no means an exhaustive list. I don’t even know why I am doing this.

- Pinacoteca di Brera - Milan *

Brera is the art academy of Milan and the most iconic museum, which contains Italian artworks from the renaissance to modernity including various masterpieces. I also recommend visiting it in person because the neighborhood of Brera is the art district of Milan and it’s really pretty although having lunch there in slightly overpriced, but then what isn’t (really if you are in Milan skip the touristy food places, have Chinese or Japanese, trust me). There’s also a lovely little botanical garden tended to by the botany students. Long story short when you come to Italy visit Milan instead of overcrowding Venice.

- Museo del Novecento - Milan *

This is a stunning exhibition and you also should go there (it’s in Piazza Duomo you can’t miss it) but in the meanwhile visit the website, that contains a selection of masterpieces. They opened a few years ago and it was free to visit for a while as a gift to Italian people, which was really nice of them. It’s not expensive now either and it contains a lot of works by very important artists of the XX century so it’s very worth it.

- Museo Poldi Pezzoli - Milan

Can you believe I’ve never been there? But there’s a lot of stuff in there. The website is not complete yet apparently, but there’s already some interesting things already, including little Japanese sculptures that now I want to go and see.

- Pinacoteca Ambrosiana - Milan

Leonardo, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Raffaello, Tiziano... they’re also digitalizing ancient manuscripts, and there’s also a fuckton of drawings and manuscripts by Leonardo. [Everybody liked that.] I fucking need to go there.

- MAUTO (Museo dell’Automobile) - Turin *

Guys. This is so fucking cool. “But I don’t like cars” you might say. Yeah, me neither. But the ancient cars are so fascinating. If I remember correctly there are also things such as the driving license of the first ever woman in Italy to get a driving license. Visiting the real place is better because the halls are very well done so if you happen to be in Turin drop by.

- Museo Egizio - Turin *

Listen this is the biggest Egyptian museum outside of Egypt and it’s awesome, although the site is sort of confusing but I’m pretty sure there are digitalized resources so if you’re into ancient Egypt try it. Right now the museum contains a temporary exhibition called Archeologia Invisibile (invisible archaeology) and it’s possible to make a virtual tour of the exhibition which is really cool. It focuses on methods and techniques used to study mummies and other kinds of artifacts. Just click on the link and you’re yeeted inside the exhibition.

- Musei Reali - Turin

Actually a group of museums, there’s an online catalogue. There’s a museum of antiquity, modern paintings, even the royal armory (armeria reale). Yeah there’s swords. You can study the blade now.

- Palazzo Madama - Turin

An array of Italian art through centuries.

- GAM - Turin

The gallery of modern art. Weird stuff. Memeable.

- MAO - Turin

Sick of Italian art? Yeah, understandable. Then it’s time for the museum of Asian art! Stuff from all around Asia, from the Middle East to Southeastern Asia. I want to go there. Let me go there, virus.

(Palazzo Madama, GAO and MAO also offer virtual tours with Google Arts and Culture but idk how that works. Links here, under “scopri”.)

- Galleria degli Uffizi - Florence *

The Uffizi Gallery is the quintessential Italian art museum and you really want to check it out. If you visit it in person, make a booking, queues are infinite. (People with disabilities skip the queues in all these museums though, if you are disabled and intimidated by these places with superqueues don’t be, just approach the personnel and you have the right to just get in.)

- Galleria dell’Accademia - Florence *

You might have heard of a lil statue called David by Michelangelo. Yeah, it’s there. But there’s also other things, although since the David is so famous no one really cares about those. Give them some love.

- Actually there’s an online catalogue of most museums in Florence, several of which sound super interesting, but it says they’re having technical problems and the picture don’t load. Maybe save the link, forget about it, and then after some time discover it again, idk. Or consider visiting Florence in person after the coronavirus goes away, I guess. Do yourself a favor and save up and get a real Florentine steak.

- Gallerie dell’Accademia - Venice

I have been in Venice for half a day and just a little tip: you (or someone that travels with you) are in a wheelchair? Consider making a plan for visiting Venice that includes this: go in fact somewhere else. In the meanwhile visit this site, although I can’t figure out how to turn it into English, but I’m sure you can handle a little Italian.

- MUVE - Venice

Actually it’s possible to make a virtual tour of various museums/palaces in Venice with the Google Arts and Culture project, which sounds great. You figure out how it works, the link should explain. I’ll do it myself one of these days.

- Peggy Guggenheim - Venice

XX century artworks, including some by the most famous artists like Picasso, Magritte, Dalí, Kandinsky etc etc.

- Musei Vaticani - Rome *

Did I call the Uffizi the quintessential Italian art museum? I stand by it, but. I mean. The Vatican Museums, you know? It’s a place you should visit at least once in your life. All of Rome actually. They say it’s too big and chaotic but don’t listen to them, listen to me, you must visit Rome when you can. Ask someone for tips on where to eat that is not a tourist trap, and you’re fine.

- Musei Capitolini and all the civic museums - Rome (at the top of the page, click on “all the museums” and you see a whole list, for each museum you can visit the collection)

All collections online, by rooms or subject. The Musei Capitolini is the main museum in Rome except the Vatican, but I also recommend the Centrale Montemartini which is a collection of ancient artifacts located in a repurposed thermoelectric center, which must be fascinating to see in person. I’m planning on visiting it the next time I’m in Rome. (I’ve only been twice, briefly, okay.)

- Museo Ebraico - Rome

It’s located by the Tempio Maggiore, in the neighborhood that was the Jewish ghetto in Rome. There are many other Jewish museums in Italy but I have been right outside this one. It was closed though.

- Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea - Rome

Apparently the largest gallery of contemporary art in the galaxy or something. Worth checking out I think.

- Galleria Nazionale Barberini Corsini - Rome

This contains some super famous paintings, by Caravaggio and others.

(There’s like 285375 museums in Rome I can’t check all the websites but I’m pretty sure I checked the major art ones.)

- Museo della Resistenza - Bologna

Feeling like nurturing your antifascist spirit today? Good.

- Museo Archeologico Nazionale - Naples

Good pictures, very interesting stuff. Statues, mosaics, epigraphs, and so on.

- Museo di Capodimonte - Naples

Very interesting although I don’t think you can browse the site in English. Then again it’s mostly pictures, so.

There’s literally a billion museums in this country and some have very confusing websites which are giving me a headache so I’ll stop here.

A few outside of Italy I can recommend:

- Archaeological Museum - Athens *

I was there and we had a slightly eccentric guide and it was very interesting.

- Museo del Prado - Madrid *

Physically, it’s huge and the halls are numbered in a confusing way that forces you to back and forth and by the end we were exhausted. Maybe online it’s less vexing...

- Museo Thyssen - Madrid *

I loved this museum. Loads of famous artists and interesting stuff.

- Museo Reina Sofía - Madrid *

Yeah we had a lot of time to visit museums in Madrid. This is where the Guernica painting is, you might have heard of it.

- Musée d’Orsay - Paris *

Awesome museum, they have those in Paris, what can you do. I haven’t visited the Louvre because we didn’t have the time, but it also offers an online tour.

- National Gallery - London *

Lots of Italian artworks, actually, and more.

- British Museum - London *

Well, there’s everything from everywhere, because of reasons.

And I just kinda pause on the staircase and think to myself OH HELL NO!!! So I rush up to his room, throw the door open, and low and behold he’s fucking some blonde bimbo and he looks over and we make eye contact and I can see the oh shit look on his face. So I screamed something like you whore fucking bastard and threw the bag of groceries I’d gotten at him and the hot soup container broke open and splashed all over him and his side hoe and the last thing I heard as I stomped back downstairs to leave was his frantic voice yelling oh god it’s on my dick! Needless to say, I never responded to his texts after that. 

9. lost someone special - too many people. But recently I lost my grandfather earlier this month on super bowl Sunday, my whole family was there when he unexpectedly died on us. And back in October of last year, I lost a close cousin in a mass shooting, and it’s really hard to heal from that because every fucking time I turn on the TV I see that another shooting has happened. Lady fairy would recognise chat noirs voice right away. She doesn't tell him because she doesn't want to give out who she is either. And he wants to know who she is really badly, but he doesn't know how to find out since he doesn't know what she looks like. At some point they have a conversation through a butterfly (makes him her champion?) And she has to try not give away that she's blind because he would find out instantly. Because who else loves butterflies, is blind, and an absolute sweetheart?!

Also I can imagine Lila knocking away her cane in the girls bathroom in the threat situation. It would contrast how bad she is to chloe, because she doesn't mess with mari like that because it's a pretty unspoken rule that you don't MESS WITH BLIND PEOPLE THAT WAY. Chloe is just upset because of how much attention marinette gets because shes blind and 'nice'. Mari also really hates chloe saying mean words to her friends. I can imagine a scene through chloes redemption where she's walking away after apologizing to marinette, and marinette just says "you're very beautiful chloe," and chloe wants to cry because oh my GOD.

Can you imagine the speech at the end of origins? The iconic ladybug speech. Except it's not through a champion, SHE is the mass of butterflies. And it's a beautiful sight and the whole of Paris loves her and there's lots of butterfly gardens everywhere to honour one of their dedicated heroes.

Maybe lila would shit talk Lady Fairy for not fighting face to face like chat noir and being cowardly behind a champion.

And at one point I would think to help keep her cover she would make herself a champion, like how hawk moth akumitised himself. And there would be such cute banter at the end of it, sitting on the rooftops at sunset. She says she feels bad she cant see the sunset. "Lady Fairy would have loved to see you today." She makes it feel like lady fairy can't see because marinette is blind, but in reality it's because there is no other champion for her to see through herself. IT WOULD BE A VERY CUTE SCENE.

The whole lila thing, sorry to come back to that. But maybe she tries to hint to adrien that she knows lady fairy. And then that she might BE lady fairy. Or something. Idk. And that makes marinette very angry how someone can lie about such a special part of her life. Alya becoming a champion, alya lectures her through lady fairy, that whole ladybug confrontation but through lady wifi i think. Marinette dislikes lila a lot for that but can't tell anyone WHY.

Alya is a common champion and she LOVES IT. She loves being lady fairies hero. She loves her so much and as a present from marinette, she gets them an interview. Very much of her is hidden, but lila gets a very pretty picture of lady fairy from behind (the pretty butterfly cape thing and her figure and hair. And Paris goes frkkn BONKERS). Lady fairy uses her most trusted champions (friends), knowing that they're real heroes, she gives them a miraculous for extra back up. Alya is so honoured.

I’d give this game a solid 7/10. Actually grade wise, not bs grade were 7 is meh. 5 = meh, 7 = great. Great game, few strong flaws, but still good.

Paris 1/6 <2/10>

So today is the day i go to the Louvre Museum! At first i wasnt rlly up for it, because all the museums ive been to bore me to death. But this was actually quite nice. Well at least the paintings and roman sculptures interested me, the mummies not really. So Id highly reccomend getting the express tickets and going maybe an hour before the doors open to take a look around the castle (really great photo opportunities!) And going to the nearby cafes to eat and have some coffee. So there are many fountains to take pictures at, and the iconic pyramid glass figure. But just know that the sun makes it to bright for anything to be seen lmao. 

I was super hyped for the roman and greek sculptures and paintings and im glad i was not dissappointed. Its very enjoyable to read the stories and descriptions of the sculptures and the stories in the paintings. Like wow im shocked. I didnt know id like the paintings so much. They had so much stories and deep meaningsamd so realistic i could practically hear the stories in my head and imagine them happening in real life. 

And one thing to note DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING IN THE MUSEUM. Unlike singapore museums, theres only like maybe 3~ "please do not touch" signs across the museum(idk if I’m blind). And idk what was wrong with me i thought some were just plaster casts n i touch them, along with other tourists, and got shouted at in french(which i did not understand). Thankfully i was not kicked out, but boy that did ruin my mood for the rest of the tour. 

And if you're going to see the Mona Lisa, maybe you shouldn't. Firstly, you cant see anything, the painting is too far away, and you probably get some random persons face or hand in your picture. Not to mention, its ridiculously packed. Like its too hard to get a decent picture, and youre maybe better of googling the picture instead. 

Next, i went to the half-constructed Notre Dame. Okay believe it or not, you cant see anything. There are construction walls surrounding, and youre gonna be too near to see the full bulding, and tbh, i didnt know where was the front HAHA. What an idiot. Other than that, there's a restaurant near the notre dame, like its right next to it, and it serves amazing food. Like the pasta is to die for its so delicious and so deep in flavour. 

Another thing to know, The Little Prince(or Le Pettite Prince) is a very common theme for souvenirs, so i highly reccomend knowing the story before going france, because theres alot of very nice souvenirs of the little prince like glasses case, key chains, napkins, and notebooks and so much more.
