And in this paradisaical community -- talking, singing, running, dancing, chasing butterflies, gathering bindweed, soaking their openwork stockings in the high grass, fresh, wild but not wicked, each stole kisses from another indiscriminately now and then, all except Fantine, who was closed up in her vague, dreamy, fierce resistance, and who was in love. “You always look out of sorts,” Favourite said to her.

It feels so weird to me that there were early types of rollercoasters during Victor Hugo’s lifetime but that he died before the construction of the Eiffel Tower.
#les mis letters#1.3.4#maybe because it’s so iconic for paris today? idk#he didn’t die that many years before i know but still#and rollercoasters seem so modern to i guess#too*

Round 1 Stage 3 Poll 4
Silken Squall, Marquet: Somewhere in Marquet travels a flying tent city, primarily inhabited by air genasi, called the Silken Squall. Dorian Storm, of the Crown Keepers and Bells Hells, hails from here.
Shadycreek Run, Wildemount: Shadycreek Run is a lawless town in the Greying Wildlands, just outside of the Dwendalian Empire. It is notorious for powerful crime families and slavers. Caduceus Clay of the Mighty Nein grew up nearby, and he met and joined the party at his home outside of the city.

ive had this same terraria world for about four years, and here is the world seed loaded up in 1.4.1.2 (the original version the world was made in) and 1.4.4.9v4 (the current version of the game) quite interesting to me to see what changed, like the entire dungeon is almost exactly identical, the oceans are identical, a couple surface features are the same, one crimson went under mitosis, the other made a pilgrimage across the world the snow biome got slightly bigger, the outside of the desert is the same shape, the sky island above it went up slightly, a couple new sky islands appeared, its quite cool to look at. im tempted to load up 1.3.5.3 and see what the seed looked like then, and what it will look like in 1.4.5 edit: i did it, in reblogs theres one that cycles through 1.3.5.3, 1.4.0.5, 1.4.1.2, 1.4.2.3, 1.4.3.6v2, and 1.4.4.9v4, i.e. basically every major version since the ability to input a world seed was added (except 1.3.4.4 since i dont have the backup installer for that)
#1.3.4 was when world seeds was added experimentally#but i dont have that version#when i asked gog support they could only give 1.3.5.3 and 1.4.0.5#also changelogs say the only world generation that changed between 1.3.4 and 1.3.5.3 was changing rarity for certain paintings#terraria

YAY I love the chapter of Les Mis where Fantine rides a roller coaster!
About three o’clock the four couples, frightened at their happiness, were sliding down the Russian mountains, a singular edifice which then occupied the heights of Beaujon, and whose undulating line was visible above the trees of the Champs-Élysées.
The “Russian Mountains” were an early version of roller coasters. They were (obviously) invented in Russia, and then became a Thing in France when Russia occupied the country after helping defeat Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo, which resulted in a lot of cultural exchange.
Obviously at this point roller coaster technology was in its infancy (they were basically just carts that rolled down a track.)
Here’s a longer post with more detail on the coasters!
But yeah, I wish adaptations would just let Fantine zoom around on her little roller coaster for a bit. She goes through so much later on that she deserves that. Let her have this one thing.
#let Fantine zoom….#if the musical wasn’t cowardly Fantine would be singing I dreamed a dream while zooming along a little roller track#modern au Tholomyes abandons Fantine after taking her to six flags#Les mis#Les mis letters#lm 1.3.4#Fantine#russian mountains#roller coasters

I really do not care about Tholomyès’ rather bad poetry!
It's frustrating that Hugo continues to portray this group as "the four merry couples" or "happy couples" when Fantine's reality contradicts that label entirely. Yes, she may be enamoured, but there's no sign of true merriment or happiness emanating from her. Her refusal to participate in seemingly harmless fun like kissing or swinging speaks volumes. Add to that Favourite's biting comments, which suggest anything but a close friendship with Fantine.
I wonder why Hugo spends so much time depicting these deceptively careless and happy scenes. Probably he wanted to show that Fantine had a happy and carefree time back then. It’s just that she doesn’t seem very content at the moment.
The Russian Mountains were “Les Montagnes Russes à Belleville” (below), opened in 1817. Unlike its icy Russian counterpart, it utilized wheeled carts instead of sledges, and accidents were not uncommon!

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Tholomyès is so Merry That He Sings a Spanish Ditty, LM 1.3.4 (Les Miserables 1925)
After viewing the shrub, Tholomyès exclaimed, “I offer you asses!” and having agreed upon a price with the owner of the asses, they returned by way of Vanvres and Issy.

I never have high expectations for Tholomyès, but his song is so bad and I can’t tell if it’s intentional (to emphasize that he’s trying to show off and isn’t actually that intelligent) or if Hugo just wasn’t great at Spanish.
To be perfectly honest, Hugo loses me when he rants about love, so I’m sure there’s a lot of interesting stuff here, but most of it went over my head. One line that did stand out to me, though, was this:
“The patrician and the knife-grinder, the duke and the peer, the limb of the law, the courtiers and townspeople, as they used to say in olden times, all are subjects of this fairy.”
I think presenting love as something that strikes all equally regardless of class is meant to be part of the happy atmosphere of this chapter, but strangely, almost all of the examples here are definitely high-class (”patricians”, “dukes”, “peers,” and “courtiers”). Given his focus on artists in this paragraph, this may be a result of who would have access to “high culture” to, for example, publish poems on love. Someone writing from a court would likely differentiate between different people there and label everyone outside of that “townspeople.” And yet this group is predicated on class inequality. All of the women are workers to some extent, even if their exact situations vary, while all of the men are students from well-off families. Maybe they’re all capable of “falling in love,” but their experiences are shaped by their backgrounds.
What I find frustrating about this section is that sometimes, I can’t tell why Hugo is saying something. For instance, he writes: “Beautiful women waste themselves sweetly. They think that this will never come to an end.” “Waste” and “sweetly” is a strange combination, and he adds that poets love this. Perhaps he’s reflecting on what he considers the tragically fleeting nature of beauty in women (in short: Hugo being weird and sexist)? Or on love itself being fleeting? He also says that women “think” this will never end; with “waste”, could this be foreshadowing something bad? And yet the rest of the paragraph seems positive (?). I just don’t know what to make of it.
On a happier note: the Russian Mountains! It’s the roller-coaster!

Ok but i need to talk about this and wtf is this Spanish
I honestly don't know which version is more accurate to what the real intention of the song was. Cause both means completely different things
#lm 1.3.4#les mis letters#the first one says he's in love (more like horny) cause she shows her legs#the second put himself at her feet#that's more romantic or al least appropriate for that time period right?#or am i reading this wrong?

For 1.3.4, "Tholomyès is so Merry That He Sings a Spanish Ditty," (Hapgood's word choices continue to be A Thing. "Ditty?" Really?) Arai interpreted it from roughly pages 269–279 of the English translation. I already referenced in another post how Arai was clearly working from photo references (very possibly even tracing them) for some of the longer views of Saint-Cloud.
He also gets in the swing:

Since Fantine canonically rides a roller coaster in Les Mis, we could technically have a verse in I Dreamed a Dream where Fantine says "My life has been such a roller coaster" and it would be completely period-accurate
#I mean if were gonna mince hairs the english phrase 'roller coaster' didn't exist#but the french phrase that translates to 'russian mountains' (which is still french for roller coaster) did#it just wouldnt scan well is the problem#if anyone can write a verse of I dreamed a dream that manages to fit 'russian mountains' or 'roller coaster' into the scansion. you win#les mis#les mis letter#lm 1.3.4#roller coaster
