The most specific rant that a small handful of people will appreciate:
In the live-action Alita movie, if Dr Chiren is from Zalem, whyyyy does she have a brain? Like. We saw it! We saw the brain!
#alita#gunnm#like ok we didn't see it being removed so maybe it was someone else's brain#and i didn't read the whole manga series when i was younger#and don't have the disposable income to buy the new ones#BUT#my understanding was that people from Zalem were androids#computer brains in human bodies#i really need to get the rereleased manga#maybe a post-bar-exam present for me

this long ass trainwreck of a post is about two types of cards and two types of hands in apollo justice: ace attorney. also about beanix. like, a lot. i got carried away.
i have already written a post about phoenix wright in turnabout trump and his decision to make apollo present forged evidence, but i will repeat myself a little for the sake of making sense. before, i have stated three definite motivations for his behavior: teaching apollo to never make the mistake of blind trust ever again, making sure that he wins the case and completely cutting himself off from the law, submitting to the image of himself that others see. "maybe i did, maybe i didn't, but who cares anymore" - phoenix wright, 2019, dear genties and ladymen of the court. but anyway, as fascinating as his character is in aa4, the only way to really understand it is to focus on the bigger picture. phoenix wright has been collecting evidence for seven long years, working on the jurist system, playing the piano, looking in the mirror and seeing the cracks from the big big punch the system landed on him. phoenix wright might still remember how to be a lawyer, but he is no longer part of the current system, in fact, he refuses to be. he frequently says he "quit law", meaning him not going back or trying to was somewhat of a conscious choice. bringing me to my second point and fourth reason of him forging evidence: the rules don't matter to him anymore, because these rules are not the ones he agrees with. he is no longer playing by them.
once you understand that, the point of view shifts. his actions are only wrong from a legal standpoint (aside, of course, from betraying apollo's trust, not excusing that but also not really talking about that right now), he is acting as a man, not a lawyer. look at the forged evidence morally: did it do harm? we know the man who he was trying to frame with the evidence is guilty (kristoph), we know he knows and we know he knows what will happen. what happens is: with the price of a small lie, a bigger truth gets revealed, and millions of other wrongs that the system created break. this action has led to good consequences and was done with good intentions (well, i assume), meaning it was, objectively, good, righteous. it's just that the law is righteous no more.
furthermore, when you look at phoenix's actions overall, we understand that the fire burning inside him has not changed. he is fighting for a better system, one that will never leave an innocent alone and abandoned, as now there are 12 jurists and any of them could be on that person's side, not based on their position or job, but based on reason and common sense. see me making the word job bold? that's for a reason, i will talk about the significance of jobs later. anyway, phoenix's seriousness about the whole thing is really well-demonstrated by sprite.
now. you might notice klavier and kristoph here. that's because, as noted by countless other ace attorney fans, phoenix's expression mirrors theirs. if it was just kristoph's, this expression of phoenix's would frankly concern me: a parallel with an "evil" character is not exactly a good sign. however, this expression gains a new meaning with klavier having it: aside from indicating that phoenix wright remains a sponge that adopts people's mannerism, he is experiencing a similar mindset to the gavin brothers: perfectionism. not in the von karma way, though, a different kind. this perfectionism means "i have poured my heart and soul into this concert/murder/jurist system and everything has to go right. for the love of god". it means phoenix's heart is in it. it means the mask falls.
the make falls, and yet phoenix wright remains in his hoodie and beanie. the mask falls, and yet, by the end of turnabout succession, he says he might learn how to play piano, or, maybe, perhaps, someday, pass the bar exam. weird, isn't it? the system is fresh and just, his honor is restored, but he is embracing the freedom of choice and a chance at authenticity instead of deciding what that authenticity will be for him right away. that, at least to me, is because phoenix wright is no longer defined by his occupation, and neither are any of the characters, really. here is where i come back to the job thing.
a wise tumblr user out there somewhere once said aa2 is about identity, and i completely agree. in the introductory case, phoenix loses his memories and regains his sense of self by, essentially, doing his job, remembering why and how he does it. and, like phoenix, aa4 is much more mature in the subject of identity. (not calling aa2 an immature game, just pointing out the development of identity as a concept). phoenix wright is a piano player slash poker champion, and yet he brings the truth to light and turns the system upside down. klavier gavin is balancing being a rockstar and a prosecutor; despite being a singer, he is factually serious and determined in court, despite being a prosecutor, he sings for thousands and is the most glimmerous of fops. ema skye - and boy will i say a lot about her in a separate post someday - is a detective, and yet she keeps her soul alive with luminol and fingerprint powder, using forensics despite not being a forensic scientist. apollo justice is a successful attorney, and yet he presents forged evidence in his first trial, and, while it wasn't his choice to do so, he also doesn't make the choice to go ruin his career and reveal the truth of the evidence, does he?
point is, the characters make choices, no longer identifying themselves solely with their jobs. they do what they do, and what they are is what they put out into the world. while aa2 is about identity, aa4 is about actions, making a change. no longer is it acceptable to stand by and observe - you either build a new system brick by brick and break the old one with your bare fists, or you're a victim slash pawn of it. or you're kristoph gavin and those like him - the one who the old system relies on, and the one who relies on the old system.
either way, the matter of actions, well, mattering, is really well-demonstrated by the importance of hands in aj:aa. i already talked about hands for a bit in this post, reblogged from @/phantommarigold. what inspired this line of thought was phoenix's tendency to hide his hands in almost every sprite of his, except for the objection one (which is stated was for the reason of hiding his true intentions, aka his "hand" as in hand of cards). the other reason, however, was the significance of hands in aa4 overall. kristoph gavin's hand has a devilish scar on it, showing his true identity and being a tell of his; apollo's perceptive powers are enhanced by the bracelet on his hand, which he so impolitely points at other objection-style, and so does phoenix in turnabout trump. klavier is a guitarist, so hands are quite literally an important part of his; but they are also very detailed in general, drawn with rings and great detail. in moments of weakness and confusion, he uses his hands to cover his ears, subconsciously desiring to ignore the truth (but choosing not to, of course. eh, that's for another post). machi tobaye holds lamoir by her hand at all times in order to guide her. things such as letters, written diaries, handwriting and fingerprints play a crucial part in multiple cases. i am confident that if i tried hard enough, i would find even more examples. point is: hands are important. hands symbolize action, creation and ruin, hands are our instrument, which we use to leave an imprint on the world. again, choices and actions.
but let's go back a bit. this will be a little niche, and yet i am compelled to point out the possibly unintentional tarot symbolism in character design. kristoph gavin has a devil on his hand, and frankly, that is very fitting for a name of the fifteenth major arcana. the devil traps, conceals the truth and holds immense power, which is essentially what kristoph does. the card is also associated with manipulation, which is also undeniably what he does to klavier at the very least. the card suits him, frankly even more than the descriptions of the devil as a mythical being.
before i point out the most obvious tarot reference, bear with me while i talk about the more far-fetched ones. first and foremost, trucy wright as the magician, the first arcana: someone who holds all the tools (the necessary (and forged) evidence, two times throughout her life) but isn't exactly at a point of bringing them into full action, someone who motivates and powers (her being phoenix's light), and, well, literally a magician. apollo justice as the sun - named after the greek god of the sun, bringing light and joy into life (by assisting with the downfall of the dark age) and possibly being childish (the naive behavior of accepting forged evidence in turnabout trump). are my descriptions of the cards fully accurate? no, give me a break, divination may be in my blood but it's not in my brain. anyways, lamoir as the star - constellations on her clothes, divine-looking, and the seventeenth arcana, following the tower - a symbol of a wreck, a disaster, a change (losing memories, in her case, and ... well, being shot does resemble the lighting that strikes the tower). this might seem insignificant for those not familiar with tarot, but the major arcana are famous for telling a story of life if put in the correct order, so it made sense to me.
now, the most important tarot reference of all is the one at the start of case 2. take a look at the transcript/description of the intro from ace attorney wiki:
Intro
The camera slowly zooms away from a wheel that is turning.
As long as we draw breath, the Wheel of Fate turns...
There are brief scenes of Phoenix Wright about to get hit by a car, Trucy Wright chasing someone, and a man playing on his harmonica. Afterward, it is shown that the wheel is part of a stand being pulled by a man late in the rainy evening. Everything except the wheels is silhouetted in darkness.
Spinning big crimes and little crimes together.
The man suddenly stops.
And when the Wheel stops...
The camera pans to another man blocking the stand-puller's way. As the camera begins to zoom away, there is a flash from a gunshot. The camera accelerates, showing part of a park before obscuring the scene behind some city towers.
You die.
the wheel of fortune is the tenth major arcana, and it's meaning is quite obvious.
fate is an uncontrollable force, one that is the most powerful in the universe as it is the universe itself. in this case, it spins a complicated tale, connecting small and big crimes, unintended consequences and failed plans.
in the end, what's done is done, no matter what you originally intended. you may not have wanted to present forged evidence, but you did. you may not have wanted this job, but you have it. you may not have known and you may not have seen, but now you do, and what you do next is what matters.
so you better be careful. tomorrow is a new day no matter what happens; time is inevitable, and so is change, but if you get your hands dirty and play your cards right, then, perhaps, the sun will shine on that day and the day after that.

KONOHA ELEVEN IN A ZOOM CLASS!
FEATURING: naruto, sakura, shikamaru, ino, choji, hinata, kiba, shino, neji, rock lee, and tenten
WARNINGS: mentions of food
NARUTO
definitely has forgotten that he was unmuted multiple times
or his camera was accidentally turned on
you could just see him sprawled on his bed with a bowl of instant ramen on his lap and a blanket wrapped around himself
EARRAPE SLURPS!! rip headphone users.
sometimes he notices that his camera’s turned on and you can see him freak out and scramble to turn it off
but he accidentally unmutes himself too and so you just hear panicked yelling
his device topples to the floor with a loud crash and he screams so loud istg
the next thing you see is naruto’s face hovering over the camera in fear just before his camera turns off and he’s muted again
the teacher is so confused?? naruto should i call an ambulance
but when he’s not eating in class, he’s sleeping in class
too busy sleeping to leave the zoom at the end of class so he’s always the last one left in the meeting besides the teacher
always asks sakura what happened during the zoom and she is FED UP
SAKURA
enters the waiting room 15 minutes before class is actually supposed to begin
spends the next 15 minutes rearranging her work area, making sure she’s prepared for the day
sits properly at her desk with her hair smoothed down and her face positioned perfectly in frame
if no one else has their camera on, she’s the only one with it on
seriously, she ALWAYS HAS IT ON
and she never leaves the screen somehow
diligently takes notes, uses the “raise hand” feature every two minutes to ask a question
sometimes it can get a bit annoying, even for the teacher
but she almost always gets perfect marks
acts like in angel in class, but after class... no promises, naruto!
SHIKAMARU
this man can barely stay awake during missions, so during a zoom? HECK NAH
shikamaru is literally me,, half asleep during lessons but somehow gets amazing grades
everyone’s either pissed at or envious of him (especially naruto)
obviously does not have his camera on
and rarely ever unmutes
uses the chat feature to answer the teacher’s questions but this man is basically asleep so its so incoherent
“shikamaru, what is a hyperbole?”
in chat: “a hyeprbole is a exsaggerayed phras,e”
teacher definitely thinks he’s cheating on tests
INO
either a) daydreaming about boys or b) checking herself out in the zoom camera OR c) secretly fuming at sakura’s know-it-all behavior
the two girls definitely compete to see who can raise their virtual hand first
"ahem, ahem- sensei? could i answer this question?"
her voice gets all sickly sweet and sakura HATES IT
the two of them totally got caught insulting each other in the private chat
100% the type of student to rewrite her notes after classes with various markers and colored pens and pretty fonts and patterns and whatnot
loves doodling flowers in her notebook during boring lessons!
CHOJI
another strong contender for the Loudest Student award!
not on purpose though, he just forgets that space bar = unmute, and plays some jumping game in another tab (like the no internet dino game!)
also,, rip headphone users
c r o n c h munch munch munch
are you kidding this man's chews are loud enough in person, but with a HEADSET?! hoo boy.
has conked out several times during class
just imagine the name Choji Akimichi with a profile picture of a bag of chips light up with the green box around it with a thunk
the teacher and class is so confused
but then you hear mumbles of "barbeque... chips... barbeque..."
and you realize that the man fell asleep onto his keyboard
he sleeps through the rest of class
HINATA
shy bb has never ONCE turned on her camera
the only time she's ever unmuted was to say "here" during attendance on the first day of school
if the teacher ever takes attendance again, she just uses the raise hand feature
what if naruto-kun thinks my voice is ugly? what if i accidentally turn on my camera? what if the teacher thinks i'm not paying attention? what if-
poor baby is too busy worrying about showing herself on zoom to actually pay attention
actually gets good grades though and her classmates wonder if she’s even there
her zoom pfp is definitely just a purple google “H”
KIBA
has the CUTEST zoom pfp hands down
it’s a selfie of him grinning cheerily with baby akamaru
100% has his camera on the whole time to show off his pup
he loves seeing everyone’s faces on screen melt and aww at the lil big doggo
sometimes akamaru just walks in front of the camera and blocks kiba from view and you just see a massive wall of white fur on screen LMAO
even though kiba’s muted, you can see him and akamaru bickering about who knows what
or even play fighting,, these two get into full on BRAWLS during class
just imagine akamaru shoves kiba into his desk and his camera crashes to the ground overturned so you see the ceiling and the occasional dog tail wagging in the corner
seriously, can the teacher ever catch a break with this class?
the answer is no.
SHINO
his zoom pfp is just a tick.
a singular tick
totally answers questions in chat with proper capitalization and punctuation
shikamaru’s improper answers tick him off
“A hyperbole is an expression that is greatly exaggerated. They are used in order to create emphasis.”
has never unmuted in his life either
he’s so unfazed by everything that goes down in class that it’s funny
if anything the slightest bit RELATED to bugs comes up during class, in 0.00238 seconds this man has an entire essay about them posted in chat, almost like he had it copied and READY to paste
everyone's definitely shocked that there’s actually a human listening behind a tick profile picture
NEJI
a very diligent note taker
seriously, this man writes like a printer; perfectly even handwriting that looks like a font, a million words per minute
everyone asks him for his notes after the zoom because they’re so neat (especially naruto, to neji’s dismay)
he gets excellent grades since he’s so organized and focused
just wishes the zoom would be over so he can work alone in peace
really hates unmuting so he often gives one-word answers in the chat
“Yes” “47” “Present” “Goodbye”
has used a zoom reaction ONCE in his life and he has never wanted to crawl into a hole and perish more
it was a complete accident,, mans was just trying to open the chat to type in his answer, but in a cruel twist of fate he clicked on the 😂 reaction
and he just sat there for ten excruciating seconds in complete and utter shock and shame for ten excruciating seconds as he prayed for it to disappear
tenten would never let him live that down
ROCK LEE
Zoom Reaction Enthusiast
😂😮👍🎉❤️ 24/7
naruto accidentally unmutes himself? 😮
choji falls asleep on his keyboard? 😂
neji answers something correctly? 👍
tenten received the highest score in class? 🎉
akamaru appears on screen? ❤️
unmutes whenever he needs to, but he thinks the little emoticons are so silly and cute
otherwise, he is EXTRA FOCUSED and EXTREMELY DETERMINED to learn all of the things
he’s the first to unmute whenever the teacher asks if the class can see the screen share, hear them correctly, etc.
never takes his eyes off the screen!! he could be missing out on important information
I FEEL LIKE,, i feel like he would totally keep his camera off when he’s muted but whenever he unmutes he would also turn his camera on
so when he says a quick “yes!” his camera turns on but before his camera can adjust properly to the light he mutes and turns his camera back off so his face is just super dark for a split second LMAOOO
tell me im wrong
TENTEN
exasperated by this entire class
thinks her and neji are the only sane ones in the class and it’s true
wants to tell sakura and ino to stop competing and just focus on learning, since they’re the only other girls in the class besides hinata
plus she’s just fed up with all the lazy boys
takes great pride in passing every assignment, test, or exam with flying colors
teachers pet, but the quieter type who stays after every zoom and sends lots of emails regarding assignments and grades and whatnot (unlike sakura and ino who rub it in the teacher’s face)
doesn’t like helping other people besides neji, girl’s got a soft spot for him since they have a mutual respect for each other
but if you’re a handsome prince, maybe she’ll help you out!
if you enjoyed this post, likes and reblogs are much appreciated :) feel free to request here, and make sure to read the rules first! have a lovely day everyone <3

Tempting the Fates {Chapter 4}
Summary: It’s the final semester of Aelin Galathynius’ collegiate career and she is so beyond ready to be done. Her schedule is packed full of nursing classes and labs designed to test her knowledge and hone her skills for the real world and her “big girl” job. However, she needs one last elective to graduate, so she decides to study a subject she’s always been fascinated by: Mythology. Who would have thought that a class about gods and goddesses living complicated lives would end up complicating her own in such an unexpected way?
Word Count: 2550
Chapters will be posted every Wednesday.
Tempting the Fates Masterlist
Shelby’s Masterlist
Tara’s Masterlist
Apollo
– God of light, prophecy, inspiration, poetry, the sun, music and arts, medicine and healing
Aelin tried to convince herself that she got up and got ready two hours early for class because of her busy schedule. She kept telling herself it was for the meeting she had with her advisor, about a possible internship at the end of the semester.
She knew that both reasons, while extremely important, were full of shit. She knew she’d showered, blow dried and curled her hair for Rowan. It wasn’t that she was trying to impress him. She’d already done that and the chance she had to be with him had come and gone.
No, now it was about proving to him that even though this class may be a gen ed, she was taking it seriously.
Dropping the class had crossed her mind. She really didn’t need to take it, she could still find a different one to pick up. But she didn’t want to think about the sort of impression it would leave about her.
If there was anything to know about Aelin Galathynius, it was that she was not a quitter, nor did she run from her problems.
Or heartaches.
With one last look in the mirror, and a whistle from Lysandra, Aelin was out the door and hurrying across campus. She grabbed a coffee on the way, but avoided her usual place, knowing full well that Rowan enjoyed the same famous cafe that she did.
He wasn’t there yet when she got to the hall, but she took the same seat she had the class before.
She wondered if Rowan would be looking for her this time.
She quickly shook the thought away.
With her hot coffee on the corner of her fold up desk, she was pulling out her notebook and a pen, waiting anxiously for class to begin.
For him to walk through the door.
Apparently he liked to be right on the dot, though, because students continued to wander in, but he did not.
She was tapping her pen against her notebook, doing her best not to stare at the clock. She was just anxious for her day to start. It wasn’t that she wanted to see Rowan.
Professor Whitethorn, she amended in her head. She had to quit thinking of him as Rowan. She couldn’t think of him like that anymore, his body pressing into hers, lips on her neck, as he—
Shaking her head, Aelin sighed and suddenly realized that the rest of the class had hushed. She was so focused on reprimanding herself for her highly inappropriate thoughts that she hadn’t noticed him come through the door and begin setting up for class. When she dared to glance towards the front, she found his eyes on her. He quickly looked away, going back to his laptop and setting up the PowerPoint on screen.
Maybe he hadn’t been looking at her.
Maybe it had all been in her mind.
But she didn’t think it had been.
He had been watching her.
“Happy Thursday, class,” he began, as the title page of his presentation flashed onto the board. “Glad to see you all showed up again. Must mean my first class didn’t suck.” Quiet laughter thrummed through the room. Aelin couldn’t muster a laugh, though. “On Tuesday, we covered the basics. So, today… Sorry, we’re doing that again.”
More laughter, especially from the pretty, flirty girls up front.
Aelin couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Which, when she settled her eyes back on Rowan, he definitely saw.
Come on, get your shit together, she chastised herself. With her back straightened, she gave him her full attention.
She took dutiful notes, but his slides didn’t hold much in the way of information. They were mostly headers, with a few bullet points. Most of the important information, information she knew would be critical for homework or exams, came straight from Rowan’s mouth.
It was clear that he loved mythology, that it wasn’t just a class his aunt had tossed his way and told him to figure it out. He was a trove of knowledge and she noticed he had a habit of going on slight tangents when he got going on a topic he was clearly interested in.
After a student asked him to clarify what he meant about Hercules not being Zeus’ only son, he ended up talking for nearly twenty minutes about what the beloved Disney movie had gotten wrong. Aelin had stopped taking notes and was watching him go on and on about how Hades, while god of the underworld, was not necessarily a villain. He just had a job to do. A job that had rules that must be followed, or the consequences could damn not only him, but others involved. His eyes found hers again and the amused smile on her face fell as she made the correlation between their own situation and the story.
They held each other’s gazes for far longer than was appropriate, and Rowan cleared his throat, going back to the PowerPoint, and the predetermined lesson plans he’d made, which didn’t include children’s movie breakdowns.
She watched him.
She listened.
And she found it all fascinating.
Rowan peeked at the clock after going on and on, and stilled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, I guess I’ll end there. There is an assignment due by tomorrow evening. You can find and submit it online. It’s an opinion piece. I want a little insight as to why you were so interested to take this class, or what you’ve found fascinating so far.” He sat on his desk, his legs hanging over the side, his feet nearly touching the ground as he leaned back on his palms. Aelin found it charming. “You’re going to write a short essay telling me of your favorite deity. It could be one I’ve talked about so far, or one I haven’t. It’s your choice. But, tell me why they are your favorite. Give me a little depth. And, remember, this is a college course. Grammar counts.”
The clock struck nine-thirty and everyone began packing up. Aelin had been so captivated by his voice that she had to snap herself back to reality.
She quickly packed up her bag, alongside the other students around her. She noticed then how young they all were, and she was willing to bet that she may be the only senior on the roster. As she was descending the stairs, she found Rowan’s eyes on her again, but he looked away as his attention was taken, thanks to the group of girls who’d been sitting in the front row. She heard vague questions of whether they could all write about Aphrodite, since they all related to her.
The scoff Aelin thought she’d kept to herself had apparently been out loud, since not only Rowan looked at her as she passed, but so did the three girls. With his attention on her again, she decided to give him a little wave.
“See you later, Professor Whitethorn.”
If there was some extra sway to her hips, it wasn’t on purpose.
At least that’s what she told herself.
Two and a half hours later, Aelin was starving. She’d just gotten out of an extremely complicated lab and she could barely focus over the growling of her stomach. Twice, the instructor had looked over at her, half expecting to find a dog stashed under the table she was working at.
So when the class let out, she was hurrying toward the cafeteria ready to get a salad from the salad bar and a big ass slice of pizza.
It was all about balance.
As she was waiting in line to fill her plate with salad, she heard a voice behind her.
“Are you actually getting lettuce or just filling your plate with ham, cheese, and croutons?”
Aelin looked over her shoulder to find Chaol, her ex, suppressing a smile.
Aelin chuckled. “If it’s the same price, you may as well pile up on the good stuff.”
Chaol gave her a small smile. “Fair enough. It’s good to see you, Aelin. You look good.”
Things hadn’t ended the best between her and Chaol, but that had been just after freshman year. At least now when they ran into one another, they could have nice little conversations like this one.
No hard feelings.
“You too,” she said, and he did. He’d been in an accident the year before. They weren’t sure he was going to walk again. In all honesty, it was just good to see him on his feet.
“How long until your class?” He asked, sliding his tray along behind hers.
She glanced down at her watch. “About forty five minutes. You?”
“This is my long break,” he sighed. “I’ve got an hour and a half, but didn’t feel like leaving campus. Want to have lunch with me?”
“Sure.” Her smile wasn’t forced, it was easy and she was glad they could even do this, when three years again, they could barely be in the same room.
“I assume you’re getting a piece of pizza after this,” Chaol said with a smirk, nodding towards her plate. “So I’ll grab us a table while you get the rest of your lunch.”
She scoffed but nodded, and went off to get a slice of pizza. When she ordered her pizza, she also got a slice of cheesecake. It was his favorite, something she hadn’t forgotten, but it didn’t hurt that she liked it, too.
Finding him in the cafeteria, she sat down at the table across from him. “How’s Yrene doing?”
He blushed, and Aelin had to admit it was adorable. After his accident, he’d fallen for his physical therapist, and she was just as smitten with him. It must have been all the one-on-one sessions, because Chaol had never been one to let someone in. Aelin had met Yrene early in her med classes, but Yrene had specialized in PT and graduated in less than three years, taking as many classes as she could manage and even studying through the summers as well.
“It’s going good,” he said, at last. “We, uh, just moved in together, actually.”
Aelin lifted a brow. “That was fast.”
Chaol shot her a look.
Aelin laughed. “I didn’t mean it like that. I meant, good for you. I like Yrene. A lot. You two are good together.”
Chaol cleared his throat before taking a bite of his salad. “Thanks.”
Aelin chuckled, taking a bite of her pizza.
Chaol blinked. “What?”
“You get so uncomfortable when it comes to feelings,” she said. “Always have.”
His eyes narrowed at her. “That’s not true.”
Aelin stopped mid-chew and raised a brow.
Even Chaol couldn’t help but chuckle at the expression. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever. What about you? Seeing anyone?”
Aelin hesitated, then said, “No.”
A slow grin appeared on Chaol’s mouth. “Didn’t sound so sure about what one.”
Aelin shrugged. “Better be nice or I’m not sharing this magnificent cheesecake with you.”
Holding up his hands in placation, Chaol went back to his salad. Rowan was a dangerous topic, one she wouldn’t share with anyone but Lysandra, so she summed it up quickly. “Met someone I thought I hit it off with. Turns out we didn’t work.”
He slowly nodded. Aelin knew he’d had a couple failed relationships between her and Yrene. “I get it, I’m sorry. Still sucks.”
Shrugging again, she turned to her salad. “It happens. Not a big deal. So if you’re living with Yrene, does that mean you and Dorian broke up? Or is he playing house with you, too?”
Chaol leveled her with a look. Chaol and Dorian had been best friends long before they came to the University of Orynth. They were both from Adarlan, both trying to get away from overbearing fathers, and decided college across the country was the way to do it. They’d been roommates every year and Aelin couldn’t even imagine Chaol living with anyone except Dorian. But now he was. “He moved into an apartment with Manon this semester when I moved in with Yrene.”
Aelin blinked. “Blackbeak? He moved in with Manon Blackbeak?”
Nodding, Chaol went on. “Apparently, they’ve been dating for about a year, without anyone noticing.”
Something in the way he said it told Aelin that he had noticed, but when Dorian had his mind set on something, there was no stopping him. And apparently, he’d decided to date one of the most terrifying women on campus.
Aelin’s response was eloquent. “Wow.”
Chaol grinned. “I like it when you’re caught off guard. It’s satisfying.”
With a scoffed she nudged his leg with the toe of her sneaker. “Well, I don’t. Dorian will be getting a very angry phone call this afternoon.”
“I’ll be sure to give him a warning,” Chaol promised.
Aelin chuckled, taking the last bite of her pizza. “It’s good to see you all happy, though. Really.”
Chaol’s eyes softened. “Thanks, Aelin.”
She nodded. “Even if I am terrified that Dorian will get eaten alive.”
Chaol laughed, and she had forgotten how nice Chaol’s rare, hearty laugh was.
She meant it. She was so happy for them, both of them. It was interesting how things changed over the course of a few short years.
Their conversation continued, as did the laughs, and before she knew it, Aelin glanced down at her watch. She had less than fifteen minutes to haul ass back to the nursing building for her next class. Chaol, who had much longer to sit with nothing to do, assured her that he could handle her trash and told her to get to class. With a hug, and a promise that they’d have dinner soon, all of them, even Manon, Aelin was hurrying out of the cafeteria building.
Somehow, the entire time she’d been having lunch with Chaol, she hadn’t noticed the set of pine green eyes watching her.
Rowan’s own break had been at the same time as hers, but the gen ed building was much closer than wherever she was having to run off to, so he had longer to sit and— there was no denying it— brood. They were halfway across the room, so he couldn’t hear any of their conversation. He had no clue who the tall man was she smiled at so often, but clearly they were very familiar with each other with how easily they talked. And he made her laugh. A lot.
Rowan wasn’t sure why that was what grated on his nerves the most, but it unsettled him.
Seeing Aelin with someone else, someone clearly her own age, it all unsettled him. He didn’t like it. Almost as much as her parting words in class had.
See you later, Professor Whitethorn.
It’s like she was mocking him, yet at the same time, she clearly wasn’t. She was doing exactly as he’d asked of her, seeing him as her professor, not as her boyfriend.
No, he reprimanded himself. Not boyfriend. Hookup.
They’d had sex one time, that didn’t give either of them any claim over the other. It was a hookup and nothing more. And she was his gods-damned student.
She was off limits, in every way possible.
Yet he couldn’t figure out why seeing her with someone else, someone she should clearly be interested in instead of him, had him seeing red.

i loved law au but some of your asks you previously answered and chapter notes seemed as if you were unhappy with the way you ended it. i feel like if you wanted to write an alternate ending and post it people would eat it up and maybe you will feel more motivated to write again. i have seen that help a lot of people get back into writing. i'll keep rereading law au regardless! :)
Anon, I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to respond! I’ve had this open forever b/c I loved the thought bubbles it popped up for me that got me thru many a recent boring meeting. Putting this under a cut b/c I’m not sure anyone but me and you (and probably not you anymore lol) care about the response.
It’s not exactly that I was unhappy with the way I ended it, although I can see how my dithering would give that impression! I actually had the “end point” (coming back together in the canon timeline after a long separation w/ both in substantially the same life situation – Beth on cusp of divorce, Rio on top of his various businesses, all 5 kids + same situation for Annie/Ruby, etc.) in mind from the start and was trying to build to it throughout.
Each chapter I was trying to “foreshadow” (lol forever at myself using that in reference to myself, and yes, I did just cringe) the ending. Courtney talking about older married women in law school not “cutting it” (this bitch). The 1L professor telling Beth one day she’d have to choose between family and career and Beth actually “choosing” Annie (family) over a dearly-held professional goal. Beth’s softness for babies. Beth/Rio’s divorce negotiation clients being a mirror of what Beth’s eventual situation would be when she was (finally, Jesus) ready for a divorce in the future. Beth's cutthroat high-intensity job lined up for after graduation not being doable (in her mind) with competing personal responsibilities. Beth’s dorky teacher’s pet relationship with Prof. Katz (a divorce lawyer) being how she would end up making it back to the practice of law. Beth and Dean buying the big suburban house with rooms for all the kids despite being childless. Beth’s worry over debt/money/financial insecurity (tbf I cut a lot of this and I think it weakened this point significantly) and her default fall-back to always considering Dean a safe (albeit intensely boring) harbor in the storm. Rio observing periodically how she always runs away when things get hard, how obsessed she is with image and what things are "supposed to look like" instead of what she really wants/thinks, etc. His own struggle with reconciling the “lawyer” life with what he really wants to do.
I actually thought I was being TOO obvious that it was leading up to a time skip (especially starting the whole thing in 2003!) and Beth getting pregnant – in one comment early on, foxmagpie said something like “is Beth pregnant?” and I was, “….eek.”
So I wasn’t unhappy with the substance of the ending, because that’s the only story I had. I was/am a little unhappy with the structure. I had originally wanted to write a present day canon timeline multi-chapter AU where both had met in law school years ago but had been separated since (so, basically, a takeoff of The Good Wife, lol). But I was having to flash back to the law school part too much so I decided to start first with the law school years. I was going to end it at the bar exam, with them broken up. Then the second story would pick up a decade or so later and also flip back and forth with both POVs. But I could feel myself losing my mojo as the show was ending, and the ABSOLUTE ANXIETY of leaving the whole thing unfinished was weighing on ya girl hard. So I consolidated a lot of my outline for the “second” story (in present-day) into the last chapter of my “first” ("only," lol) story, which not only resulted in it being obscenely long, but maybe too diffuse to really wrap up the original story well.
What I was really struggling with though was my dawning horror that the story I knew I was telling was NOT the story that some (most?) readers thought they were getting. As it went on, and I started to get more and more comments about people looking forward to Beth/Rio happily together practicing law, totally personally, professionally, and romantically fulfilled right after graduation, I started feeling more and more damn guilty.
Yes, I knew and know each creator/writer is telling their own story and can do that however they want without any inherent obligation to the reader/viewer, etc. etc. But, on the other hand, I’ve been on the other side of getting really invested in something and then feeling really really disappointed when the ending went where I didn’t expect. This is such a niche reference lol, but my mom still rants about Billy & Billie, a random 2015 show she was OBSESSED with, that ended in an unexpected way. She felt PERSONALLY betrayed by the ending and still vows to me regularly (to the point where I’m like, “damn, Ma, OKAY, it’s been 7 years, I got it!”) never to watch anything else from that creator again. I personally felt the same way about the last season of GOT – it just killed my interest in the series as a whole dead. And I think you can see it even with Good Girls, given how many people seem to have left the fandom after the end of Season 2.
So to have people invested and happy and thinking my story was going in Direction A, when I knew it was going in Direction B? I felt like I was, I dunno, misleading people? Making them wait so long for an update that they were just going to be like, “wtf, this is bullshit, why did I waste so much time on this?”
THAT was the real source of my angst, and the reason I kept trying to see if I could break out of the direction I was locked into, and instead – make people happy, I guess? (And, I think to some extent, I was right that there were people disappointed with my ending. I had a couple commenters that commented on each and every chapter, but not on the last one. To be clear, I DO NOT think anyone NEEDS to comment EVER and there are 50 reasons or more why those people might not have commented – up to and including liking the idea of the ending but thinking it was poorly written! But, I still couldn’t help thinking I disappointed them after they had enjoyed everything up to the last. And I was then Rio in the Bar with the Nick Spite Bourbon Sad Boi Hours about that ☹).
(Obvi I was overthinking all this MASSIVELY given the low low low stakes of my AO3 fanfic in the context of a Global Pandemic/Cultural & Political Upheaval in America, but it was the middle of quarantine and I was stuck alone on my couch 18 hours a day, so Emoji Shrug, I couldn’t help it.)
Having just word-vomited like a crazy person above, I have thought about your actual question and how I could have broken out of my pre-conceived ending!
First, I think everything would still be the same through the breakup at Xmas (1st semester of their 3rd year/Chapter 8). But then:
In the next chapter, Beth would still sleep with Dean during winter break (shudder), but NOT get pregnant obviously.
Brio would get back together at the Barristers’ Bar still.
But then I’d have to pull Gross Dean in more (shudder again).
The Boland Motors sexual harassment lawsuit would still end with a settlement with Beth head-in-the-sand not ever really focusing on what exactly was going on there and the fact that Dean was openly cheating on her with his various secretaries (I still feel strongly that she shouldn’t leave Dean just b/c she finds out he cheated on her or for Rio specifically. She needs to leave independently of all that b/c Dean sucks so much as a partner and a person, dammit!).
Flush from relief at the lawsuit being done, Dean would want to “recommit” and “refocus” on their marriage and he’d lobby Beth hard by playing on all their shared history, all the things he and his family did for her and Annie over the years, and all their “happy” years together ever since high school (I’m serious, it’s literally difficult for me to type this, so I highly doubt I’d ever have been able to write it).
For Beth's part, that full court press would guilt the hell out of her b/c she would feel beholden to Dean/the Bolands (I’d need to put more in about everything they did in the early years for her, but more particularly, Annie, because that’s what would resonate with Beth). Then I’d have to put more in about how precarious her financial situation was with student loans/debts and no prospect of a paycheck until after the bar exam. PLUS more about Annie’s problems with Gregg/Gregg’s parents and custody of Sadie, which would be an additional source of angst for Beth because she would feel like she’d always have to be in a solid enough position financially/home-wise to be there for Annie if Annie needed help.
This would all culminate in a breakup at graduation (end of Chapter 9) because while she’d still be wildly in love, in obsession, in insane lust, all of it, with Rio, she’s still pragmatic, stuff emotions down, overly cautious in her personal relationships Beth Boland. On one hand, here’s Safe Solid Dean representing all this Safe Solid "Normal" Security. On the other, a lover who’s 5 years younger, actively and happily committing felonies, and most importantly, who has never even said he loves her (obviously he did, but at that point in her life, she needed to HEAR it, which is why I had her thinking in her last chapter how Rio didn't actually feel the same way b/c he had never said it to her, unlike Dean who said it 2 weeks into dating).
They’d all see each other at graduation and Rio would realize not only was the lawsuit over and the whole “reason” Beth was only supposedly staying with Dean already done, but that she hadn’t actually been living together-but-separate-lives like she’s been heavily implying to him all along. Dean’s all acting like they are a happy couple, they just got a puppy, graduation party is being held in 2 hours at their big suburban house ready for all those kids, etc.
They’d have a huge confrontation (probably surrounded as usual by their appalled classmates) where he forced her to admit all that, plus having slept with Dean for good measure (I’m serious, I’m going to puke). He would then reject her in disgust, thinking she’s never going to be able to let that safe, suburban life go and she’s not the person he thought she was. And that would end Chapter 9.
Then the last chapter would be the whole summer leading up to the bar exam, but they’d actually be in the same prep class, forced to sit next to each other (alphabetically!) to tie back to their first year. Beth would actually be working on her Dean shit all along (moving out/filing for separation), but since she’d be too stubborn to actually SAY that at first (thinking he didn’t care) and everything would be from Rio’s POV, he wouldn’t know that. It’d just be the whole Spite Fence thing all over again, with them being too stubborn, all up in their feels, etc.
It would all end at the bar exam, with him again going outside to find her on the second day after realizing she’s all anxious about multiple choice, him again deciding not to go back in to finish the test if she wasn’t going too, etc. But this time, she’d finally realize what all his actions were SHOWING her, and in turn SHE WOULD FINALLY USE HER WORDS and TELL him everything. They’d go back in to take the exam together triumphantly and be happily together for good after that. The End!
#anon I am so sorry for this novel answer to a simple question lol#but I am currently trapped in a professional conf and this literally saved my brain from dying during these presentations#you've also inspired me to recommit to reading fics and maybe even writing so THANK YOU!#seriously anon i love you

hi! i'm loving 86 years and live for the updates every week!! i'm working on some longfic but i wanted to know how you write so much and keep it that good, do you think it's better to finish a fic before you start posting it? how much do you write every day?
thank you so much!! 💞
i don't think there's one best way, but i can talk about what's worked for me! i find the (fictional) weekly deadline really motivating and i like hearing from people as the fic goes. but i can also see how that would be daunting, and if i finished a fic before i posted it it'd be nice to be able to go back and change things when i fuck up. instead of just rolling with the fuck ups. (though that's fun too!)
these weekly updates are kind of like a magic trick that i don't want to look at too closely, because i'm worried it'll stop working. but i can talk about my roughish schedule!
i don't write every day, though i think my average chapter length is somewhere around 6k-7k so that'd mean 1k words a day if you did divide it up that way.
since i post on thursday, i don't do any work on it on friday and often saturday. on sunday i try to start turning the idea i have for the chapter into something with actual shape. ie "kim sits the bar" into "1. red cloud, 2. court stuff with patty, 3. bar exam, 4. leaving bar flashback, 5. leaving bar present" if that makes sense, where i suddenly have a sense of actual scenes. (and the purpose of them. like, knowing i want to show court stuff to show that kim is finding real joy in that work again. show that she made the right choice)
i hope to get that done on sunday but sometimes it needs monday. on monday i also try to start filling the document with rough dialogue and anything i can vomit out that's not actual prose. so, parts of kim's conversation with patty, that conversation with the dude in the bar, etc.
monday also means i have my 30 minute commutes to & from work again, and i love those because i just set a voice memo going and talk out ideas. then when i pull up gdocs again i have something to write already, cause i just transcribe that. eventually i'll start just dictating full prose scenes as well using that time.
this all sounds nightmarish i know, but like... i guess it's a system designed to chunk the task down into smaller pieces. like, ok i'm just thinking up dialogue, ok i'm just talking out prose and as i type it up i'll polish it. ok i'll pull up the doc but i don't have to write right away, i have a voice memo to type up first.
tuesday/wednesday are the real writing days. i'm always hoping i don't have to write TOO much on thursday, but i often have about 1k words left to go. and then on thursday i'll read through it and have a voice reader read it to me and try to proofread as best i can. then post! rinse and repeat.
good luck with your writing!! i think ultimately it's about trying out stuff and finding what works for you, but i hope maybe there's some ideas in there? <3

Chapter Fifteen
Unsurprisingly, things were tense the next morning
Javier was up before you but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. Although considering it was a quarter past seven you wondered how much sleep the man could’ve gotten. What was surprising was that you woke alone.
Then you ate breakfast together in silence. Moved about your 400 square foot studio in silence. Worked across the dining table grading papers in silence.
Javier was never an overly talkative person but that was unlike him. It was unlike the two of you. You knew there were things from his past that troubled him. Things you couldn’t even begin to imagine. The longer you’d known him, the more time you spent together, the more you felt his sadness. But he seemed determined to hide it from you.
However, you couldn’t dwell on it. Not until you’d finished grading exams and assigned final grades and could put the fall quarter behind you. With a Monday deadline, work came first.
Eventually, Javier finished his grading. He gathered his things to go home and dress for the faculty party that evening, leaving you with just a kiss on your cheek and a promise to pick you up at six. You hummed noncommittally as you watched him leave.
Sunny whined at the closed door before looking over her shoulder at you with a silent question in her wide brown eyes. “I don’t know what’s wrong either,” you answered with a shrug. She laid down where she was, head on her paws and a rather sad expression of her face.
… . …
By some miracle, you were able to focus long enough to finish your grading with enough time to spare to get ready for a night out. At 5:58 you walked out of your building into the dark evening and found Javier waiting for you at the bottom of the stoop. It was a chilly night and you pulled your wool coat tighter around you as you closed the last bit of distance between the two of you. For the first time that day, as he held his hand out to you, he smiled. It was nothing more than a slight pull at the corner of his lips, but it was something.
You took his hand and let him lead you toward his car. When he reached into his coat pocket, presumably in search of his keys, he pulled out a half-finished pack of Nicorette. He tossed it in a nearby trash can.
“Why did you do that?” you asked without thinking.
He shrugged as he unlocked the car and opened the passenger door for you. “I don’t need it.”
You made no move to get in. “I thought you were trying to quit.”
“I… I did.”
“Really?” you asked, not bothering to hide your excitement.
“I haven’t needed it for a couple of weeks now actually.”
“Javi, that’s amazing,” you smiled as you brought him to you for a kiss by the lapels of his coat. “I’m so proud of you.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “You’re proud of me?”
“Yeah,” you said easily. He still didn’t seem to believe you. You continued tentatively, afraid you might say the wrong thing but needing to say something all the same. “Sometimes I just– I feel like I don’t actually know that much about you. Or, I should say, about your past. And I don’t need to know anything more than what you want to tell me,” you added quickly. “But I see you. I see you trying to be a better man. Everyday.” Your hands moved on their own accord to cup his freshly shaved cheeks. “I’m proud of you. Even if you think it’s silly.”
“I–” Javier opened his mouth to speak, but he couldn’t manage more than that single syllable.
Instead, he stared at you. You might’ve crossed some unspoken line, but you didn’t care. You’d meant everything that you said. His eyes shifted away as he stared at something past you for a drawn-out moment. “Come here,” he finally managed, and he pulled you into his embrace. The two of you held each other in the middle of the sidewalk, letting the few people out and about walk around you. “You’re too good for me, compañera.”
“I know,” you teased, trying to lighten the mood. His fingers dug into your sides and you laughed. “Are we going to talk about what happened last night?”
He sighed heavily. “I’d rather have one good night with you before I leave. I’m not going to see you for more than two weeks.”
Deciding not to question it, you put it out of your mind. Maybe what happened was a one off. Still, you pulled back and scowled at him. “Then stop being such a….”
“An asshole?”
“Exactly.”
He huffed a laugh and rolled his eyes but nodded his agreement. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled as he pressed a kiss to your temple.
“You gonna make it up to me?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’ve got plans for you tonight.”
A chill shot down your spine at the insinuation. “Good,” you smirked, “so do I.”
… . …
The country club was only a short drive past the university and up into the hills amongst rows of gated mansions. Slipping out of the car before the valet approached, you darted in ahead of Javier. The bubble that the two of you were living in still didn’t extend to work, not entirely. Not beyond fucking in your offices and occasionally brushing hands under the table at faculty meetings.
Inside, the already gilded ballroom was draped in silver and gold holiday decorations from ceiling to floor. Every inch sparkled and shone in the chandelier light. Your colleagues from across the school of social sciences crowed the hall, all dressed to the nines with glasses of champagne and hors-d’œuvre topped with caviar in their hands.
You politely made your rounds before you found yourself conversing with Debra by the bar as you waited for a cocktail. She was her usual gossipy self, going on and on about the latest office drama. That was when you first spotted Javier amongst the crowd.
He wore a well-fitted black suit – one that was significantly more flattering than some of his older ones and you idly wondered if it was new – with a white shirt, forgoing a tie so that his tanned chest was still exposed, even on a winter night. His dark hair was styled just enough to keep it off his face. Even from across the room, you could see the glimmer in his warm brown eyes as he chatted away with someone. You were surprised when he walked right up to Rafael Garcia, one of the younger professors from the political science department. You watched as they shook hands and he was introduced to his wife, noting the genuine smile on his face.
“We just started seeing each other a couple of weeks ago but it’s going well so far. I really like him.” Deb’s voice brought you back to the present.
“That’s nice,” you replied absentmindedly.
“What about you, doc?”
“What? Oh, no. I don’t have time for something like that.” You waved her off, but your eyes still followed Javier across the room. You tried to ignore the heat pooling in your stomach.
“That’s a shame.” Debra looked out at the crowd and sighed. “He never flirts with me. Not anymore, at least.”
“Your new boyfriend?”
“No,” she laughed and smacked your shoulder playfully. “Javier,” she answered, lowering her voice.
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes. Although you hoped it wasn’t that obvious who you’d been looking at. “You say that like it’s a bad thing. And don’t you have a boyfriend?”
“Sure, but Javier was always fun to flirt with. It certainly made work more interesting. You know,” she took a sip of her martini, “the two of you seem awfully friendly lately. I thought you hated him.”
“I do,” you answered quickly.
“Well, don’t let Dr. Campbell hear you speak ill about his favorite lecturer.” She raised her brows over her class as the department chair approached the two of you. You stifled a sigh.
… . …
Javier sipped at his drink as he listened to Sofia Garcia regal him with the story of how she met her husband. He’d hardly spoken to the man before than night, but after five minutes with his loquacious wife, he felt like he knew his whole life story.
“I played on the Mexican women’s national team for a few years after college until I injured my knee. But it was a blessing. I was offered a coaching position here a week later and by the end of my first season we were engaged.” She held up her left hand where a modest diamond sat on her ring finger. “That was nearly fifteen years ago. Now he’s the only one who plays soccer.”
“Yeah,” Rafael scoffed, “I play in an adult league with my cousin and some old college friends. That hardly counts. She’s the real athlete.” He looked fondly on his wife who beamed back at him. Even Javier had to admit they made a handsome couple. And it had nothing to do with his expensive looking suit or her champagne dress. It was something about the way they looked at each other. they were easily better conversationalists than most of the people in that room. You weren’t kidding when you said academics only knew how to talk about journal articles and research funding. “You ever play, Peña? We’re actually looking for one more.”
Javier shook his head. “I played when I was a kid but that was a long fucking time ago.”
“Don’t worry, man, it’s not that serious. We drink the whole game. All you gotta do is pay for the keg when it’s your turn.”
Javier laughed, surprised by his answer. “I could get on board with that.”
The conversation moved on, but Javier was only half aware of whatever question he was being asked. Just over Rafael’s shoulder, he caught sight of you. With a red dress with thin straps draped across your form that left everything and nothing to the imagination, you looked… alluring.
“Hey, uh, you look like you could use a refill,” Rafael commented, pointing toward the bar where you were standing.
“Yeah,” Javier nodded, “I’ll catch you later. Nice meeting you, Sofia.”
“I hope to see you around, Javier.” She smiled kindly at him, but Javier was already on the move, swiftly cutting through the crowd as he contemplated the ways that he could get you alone.
“Whiskey. Dry,” he ordered, leaning against the bar next to you.
“How are you enjoying the evening, Professor Peña?” Debra simpered.
“Much better now that I’m talking to you lovely ladies,” he answered without missing a beat.
On cue, Debra’s whole face flushed bright red.
“I’ll have you know I’m spoken for now. Your charm won’t work on me anymore.”
“That’s too bad.” His eyes slid to you. And then up and down your body. “What about you, sweetheart?” He offered you the perfect set up on a silver platter. And you took it.
“Not in your wildest dreams, Peña,” you shot back. His lips quirked as he repressed a smile.
“Don’t you two ever get tired of antagonizing each other?” Debra scoffed before traipsing off. He was hoping that would work.
The bartender placed Javier’s drink on the counter and then he turned back to you, still admiring your dress. Now that he was near you, he noticed the fabric was a soft red velvet he wanted nothing more than to get his hands on.
“You looked like you were enjoying your conversation with Rafael.”
“He does some interesting work on South American politics,” he offered distractedly, his eyes snapped back up to yours. “I probably shouldn’t ask you to dance.”
You reeled back a little, as if the question surprised you. “Probably not. That might ruin the whole facade of me hating you.” He made a sour face as he looked at his glass in his hand, swirling the amber liquid a few times. “I wouldn’t have taken you for the dancing type, Javi.”
He grinned. “I love dancing.”
“You never take me dancing.”
“Fucking shame. I’m gonna start.” You beamed at him, uncaring, just for a moment, who saw. It was a smile nothing short of dazzling. He took a step closer. “You look stunning.”
“You drove me here.”
“I thought you were stunning then too. But you were wearing a coat and I didn’t get to see this.” He ran the back of his knuckles down the fabric of your dress just over that sensitive spot on your side he liked so much. “You were right. This is definitely worth it.”
“What if I told you there’s more,” you said unaffectedly, feigning interest in your empty glass. The mischievous look in your eyes when they met his confused expression gave you away. Gently, you brought his hand to your thigh, just under the hem of your dress, and his fingers instantly hooked around the strap of the garter belt holding your sheer stockings in place.
“Holy fuck,” he whispered. “Are you trying to kill me?”
“What a way to go,” you cooed. His hand traveled up the strap to the apex of your thighs where he found little more than a thin piece of lace below the belt. “Careful,” you warned him, pushing his hand away.
Turning so that his body pinned you between him and the bar top and shielded you from the rest of your colleagues, he grasped your hand and brought it to the front of his pants “Can you feel what you do to me?” he said against the shell of your ear.
“That’s what I was hoping for.” Your smile was absolutely wicked.
“Do you have any idea how fucking hard it is not to kiss you right now?”
“Yes.” You squeezed him through his trousers. Javier might’ve looked remarkably calm, but he knew you felt his reaction. He steeled himself as he finished his drink and set the glass on the counter behind you.
“Follow me.”
… . …
Keeping a few steps behind him, you followed Javier back to the front of the club. You assumed he was leading you out to the car but apparently, he had something else in mind. He swung open the door to the coat check, since abandoned by the clerk now that all the guests had arrived and the party was in full swing. With some idea of what he had in mind, you hoped no one was inclined to leave early.
His mouth was on yours in an instant and as soon as the door was shut, you were pressed up against it.
“The coat closet at the holiday work party?” you asked in between fevered kisses. “Isn’t that a little cliché?”
“Honey,” he murmured against your neck as his lips moved lower and lower, “I know for a fact it turns you on when we fuck in public.”
His hand slipped underneath your dress again, following the same path as earlier, and he pressed his fingers against the lace covering your cunt, now soaked with your arousal. He pulled away to raise a brow at you, daring you to contradict him.
Instead, you palmed him again, finding him harder than before. “I’m not the only one,” you shot back. With your eyes locked on his, you dropped to your knees to loosen his belt and unbutton his trousers. Then you leaned forward to slowly pull the zip down – with your teeth.
“Fuck me” he gasped around a ragged exhale, his hips automatically bucking toward you. He watched you, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, before he hauled you to your feet with a hand on either arm. “Fucking dirty girl.”
“Wanna be your dirty girl, Javi,” you sighed, batting your lashes at him. You wanted him unraveled and unrestrained.
“Yeah?” he asked with a hint of excitement in his voice, and you nodded, satisfied with the response you’d gotten from him. Before you realized what he was doing, he spun you around and hiked your skirt up over your ass, letting it bunch around your waist.
“Hey, be careful. This dress is vintage.”
He just laughed against your ear. “You should’ve thought of that before you started this.” With one hand on your hip to hold you up, he kicked each of your ankles to prompt you to spread your legs before hooking a finger under the band of your thong and sliding them to the side. “Damn,” he growled when his fingers met your wet cunt. “I think you’re ready for me.”
“I was ready for you the moment I saw you tonight,” you answered truthfully.
You felt his grin as he kissed the nape of your neck. He freed his cock and ran the tip through your folds. You knew better than to tell him not to tease you. That was part of it. That was what he enjoyed. He wanted you so strung out by the time he slipped inside you that you were already a mess and he knew just how to get you there. And that was exactly where you wanted to go.
He started to press inside you, slowly stretching you around him with each inch, and you delighted in the slight burn. Usually, he spent more time preparing you, but there was no time for that. Not when you were just hoping to finish fucking each other before someone came to collect their belongings.
You were wet and ready for him, but you were unable to stop the yelp that escaped you as he pushed in a little further.
“Quiet,” he snapped. Then, softly, he asked, “are you okay?”
You nodded. “It just takes a minute sometimes. You’re so big, Javi.” You felt him twitch inside you.
“You take me so well. This cunt was made for me.” Your ego burned bright at his praise and he slid in a bit more as you relaxed around him.
He held you, gently caressing you while you adjusted in what you assumed was a merciful act of patience. When you were ready, you rolled your hips to encourage him.
“Keep – shit – keep doing that. Feels so good on my dick.” You could imagine the debauched look on his face. You reveled in it even though you couldn’t see him. He reached around you to cup your pussy, fingers rubbing against your clit and following your movements as you circled your hips. You moaned in unison.
But it wasn’t enough. Not for you. Not for Javier.
“Hold on to something.”
His warning came just a moment too late. With a gasp, you fell forward clawing at the coats in front of you and fisting an expensive looking black peacoat in hopes of staying upright as he set a brutal pace. “Oh, fuck yes!” you whined.
“Are you even trying to stay quiet?” Javier hissed.
“Yes,” you replied weakly.
“Fucking liar.” You heard the smirk.
The hand playing with your clit moved to your mouth and he slipped two fingers past your lips. It effectively muffled your noises of pleasure as he pulled you down hard on his cock with every thrust. The only sound was the wet noise of him sliding in and out of your slick cunt and the slap of your stocking-covered thighs as they bounced against his. You felt that delicious pressure deep in your belly, right between your thighs, building steadily.
Until you heard a noise just outside the door and the two of you froze.
Without pulling out of you, Javier held you to his chest. As if that would somehow help. You could feel his heart beating against your back just as your own threatened to break through your ribs. Two sets of wide eyes watched the doorknob, waiting for any sign that someone on the other side was about to turn it. You held your breath as you listened carefully to the low voices murmuring, unable to tell who they belonged to or what they were saying. It was like they were hovering just outside the door. Taunting you.
Just as you were about to suggest redressing and making a run for it, Javier started moving in and out of you as a torturously slow pace. Despite the voices nearby, a small whimper escaped you. He shushed you gently. “Quiet, baby,” he whispered.
“But–”
“You wanted this.”
“Javi–”
“You wouldn’t have worn this” –he fingered the garter belt– “if you didn’t want to end up just like this.”
He was right, of course.
“What if–”
“I’m not going to let that happen.” You had no idea what he thought he was going to do if someone did catch the two of you, but he seemed confident enough for the both of you. Coupled with the easy rock of his hips, you relaxed into his hold. The truth was, as much as you liked the freedom of your home, you missed this. This thrill that you trusted only him to give you.
As soon as the conversation faded away, he resumed his previous pace, punching the air right out of your lungs.
“Yes! Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop,” you chanted, forgetting the precarious situation you were in only moments ago. The coil in your belly tightened as you neared your crest, and you could tell by his less than precise movements that Javier just as close. And then, right as you were about to fall apart on his cock–
Javier pulled out and spun you back around in one swift movement. Before you even knew what was happening, he yanked down your panties and came all over you. Jaw dropping, you watched him work his length until every last drop was on you. White spurts of cum marked you and pooled in the black lace, already dripping down your thighs to the tops of your stockings. You placed a hand on either of his shoulders to steady yourself as your legs threatened to give out under you and stared down at the mess. Somehow, you were more turned on than before. You felt like you would actually combust from arousal. He held your panties in place for a moment, admiring his work, before letting the elastic snap against your skin and drawing your attention upward.
His breaths were jagged, stuttering and uneven. His head tilted back, and he looked down his nose at you with dark eyes that shone with something feral. Something sacrilegious. He was flushed and panting but a smirk tugged on his lips as he tucked his cock away and belted his pants. “You said you wanted to be my dirty girl.”
You swore you could feel your last brain cell short-circuiting. You were hyperaware of the errant drop sliding down your thighs, but you couldn’t look away from him. “Always,” you promised quietly.
You kissed him with everything you had. Javier took it greedily.
“You’re so good for me. Letting me cum all over you,” he said breathlessly, still kissing you. “I want you to keep it all in your panties so that while you’re out there talking to those pretentious professors you can feel my cum between your legs. Okay?” You nodded and he graciously straightened your dress, letting it fall over your messy thighs. “You first.”
“But I didn’t–”
“Only good girls get to cum,” he replied quickly, apparently knowing exactly what you were going to say.
“Javi,” you scolded breathlessly and pointlessly, “I– I am your good girl.”
“Not tonight. You can’t keep quiet. Do you want everyone we work with to know I’m fucking you in this god damn coat closet?” You shook your head. “Don’t worry, honey, this was just foreplay. I’m not done with you yet. Tonight, I’m gonna make you cum so fucking hard you’re screaming my name at the top of your lungs. I can’t do that here, but I can get you ready.”
Your head buzzed.
Some filthy part of you liked that he’d cum all over you. That he wanted to do that to you. You didn’t even need to cum because it’d felt that good. And you knew by the look in his eyes that he planned on making up for leaving you wanting, for making a mess of you. You instinctively understood that this was part of it. That even greater pleasure waited for you if you could just be patient and... and trust him. And you did trust him. You knew he would take care of you.
If this was going to be your last night together for weeks — after hardly spending a night apart the last month and a half — then this was just the start.
“Okay,” you agreed. “But you’re a fucking tease, Javier Peña.”
He laughed with genuine mirth in his eyes. “You started it.”
“I’ll finish it,” you promised.
“I’m looking forward to that.”
You hesitated, teasing your bottom lip with your teeth. “Do we really have to go back out there?”
“It would be rude to leave so early.” You knew he didn’t care about staying. He was just tormenting you, playing a fucked-up game that had your head spinning like crazy. “But don’t worry. Eventually, I’ll take you home and fill you up. Just the way you like it. Now be a good girl” he said with a swat on your ass, “and go out first.”
Feeling defiant, you turned around and planted a kiss on his neck, purposefully leaving a smudge of red lipstick on his crisp white collar.
“Are you trying to get me in trouble?”
“Maybe I do want everyone to know your mine.”
He wiped away the lipstick he smeared when he stuck his fingers in your mouth with the pad of his thumb. “You know. That’s all I care about.”
… . …
The two of you didn’t make it another hour. Fifty-two minutes to be exact. Javier knew because he kept checking his watch only to decide that time had crept to a halt. He wanted nothing more than to take you home and finish what he’d started. Every time he glanced at you across the room, he found you squirming as you tried to keep a straight face while chatting with some colleague, and he had to look away and recompose himself.
It hadn’t been his intention to leave you wet and wanting and covered in his cum. It’d just happened in the heat of the moment. Some wild idea that he’d decided to act on. But you… you’d liked it. And so did Javier.
In reality, fifty-two minutes wasn’t that long, but it was enough time to suck up to the school’s dean. If Javier was going to be put on display as his prized lecturer for the year, he’d make him listen to him in return. Even if he had to turn up the fake charm to a ten in front of a group of wealthy alumni.
“Here she is now,” Javier said, taking a hold of your elbow as you passed by, physically dragging you into the conversation. You shot him a confused look, but he just smiled at the dean.
“Ah, yes, professor,” Dean Dalton started, “It would seem you’ve made quite the impression on Agent Peña.”
Javier elected to ignore his choice of title.
“Really? I wasn’t aware.” You glanced at him out of the corner of your eye, but he could tell you were happy.
“I’ve had the privilege of reading a few chapters of her upcoming book,” Javier explained. “Trust me, you’ll want to see what she’s planning next.”
“As luck would have it, I’ve been talking to a few of our more generous donors tonight. Perhaps we should meet when classes resume to discuss how the school might be able to help your research.” The dean clinked his glass against yours and ambled off.
“What did you just do?” you asked, disbelief lacing your voice.
“I told you I would help you.”
“Oh my God… thank you,” you said softly. You stared at him for a long moment and he just held your gaze. “Will you take you home now?”
“Yes.”
Without wasting another second, you turned on your heel and headed toward the entrance. He followed eagerly. “Wait.” You stopped suddenly and his chest hit your back. You peered at him over your shoulder. “Don’t forget our tradition.”
He quirked a brow in silent question and your eyes flicked to the bar in response. It clicked. “Got it,” he said with a grin. He swiped the first bottle of champagne he could reach. Something so expensive he couldn’t even imagine the price tag. Something neither of you could ever afford on an academic salary.
… . …
Javier drove with one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting on your knee, drawing circles on your thigh over the sheer material covering your skin. Late on a chilly December night, the streets were empty, and the drive was easy. The city was unusually peaceful.
“I still can’t believe you pulled that off,” you murmured dreamily. He squeezed your knee in response.
A few minutes later, he’d stopped at a light when you quietly said his name. He turned to you and found you staring at him. You looked relaxed and happy. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you how handsome you look tonight. All dressed up for me,” you offered sweetly. “You’re absolutely breathtaking.”
“How much did you have to drink?” he deflected.
“One drink hours ago. Nice try, but I’m sober.” You laughed but your teasing tone gave way to something softer. “You really are the most beautiful man.”
In his periphery, the light changed, bathed the inside of the car in a bright green light. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from your beautiful face. Not when such an open, vulnerable sincerity graced your features.
“The light’s green,” you whispered.
“I know.”
A small smile broke out on your face.
… . …
Behind you, Javier trailed soft, lazy kisses along the slope of your neck as he slowly unzipped your dress, letting it hang loose around you. Your eyes fluttered shut as he smoothed his hands down your exposed back, thumbs gently digging into your flesh to massage your tired muscles. Every kiss, every touch, stoked the fire he’d ignited inside you hours ago.
“Let it fall,” he murmured against your skin. You slipped the straps over your shoulders and the fabric pooled at your feet. Then you reached for the clasp of your bra. “Leave it. I’ll take it off when I want to.” You bit back a devilish smile as he continued his ministrations. His lips followed his hands down your spine, and you gasped when he placed a kiss on the small of your back.
“Can’t decide how I want you first,” he mused.
“I want your mouth on me.”
He kneaded the flesh of your ass as he placed the lightest kiss on one cheek. “It is.”
“Not there.”
At your complaint, he snapped the garter belt strap so it stung against your flesh. But a firm hand on your back urged you forward until you were kneeling on the bed and he mouthed your cunt through the lace. “Here?” he asked, voice muffled.
“Yes,” you moaned, desperate for more.
“Maybe I should clean the mess I made on your pussy.” Without waiting for an answer, he pulled the fabric away and sealed his mouth over your hot, wet core, drawing an inarticulate slew of curses from you.
Hands gripping the backs of your thighs right at the tops of your stockings, he alternated between sucking on your clit, teasing the little bundle of nerves between his lips, and fucking you with his tongue. The constantly changing pressure was as intoxicating as it was frustrating — it was never enough but plenty to keep you hovering right on the cusp.
Until he finally – finally – gave you what you needed most.
Holding a steady pace as he flicked his tongue over your clit, Javier pushed you right over the edge.
Unable to breath, unable to move, unable to even think, you sobbed, cunt still pulsing around nothing, when he unceremoniously flipped you over and entered you. He slid into your dripping heat easily. And somehow, your first orgasm rolled right into the second as his cock struck something magic inside you, sparking a whole new wave of pleasure.
“You can’t stop coming, can you?” he asked, grunting as he pounded into you.
It just kept going. And going. Wave after wave relentlessly rolling through you. Unceasing in the best way imaginable. Javier knew your body so fucking well. He was the only one who knew how to do this to you. “No,” you mewled deliriously, body still shaking under him.
He thumbed away a tear rolling down your cheek. You hadn’t even realized you were crying. His hand left your face to knead a lace covered breast. “You look so fucking hot.”
“Fuck me harder, Javi.”
He pulled out all the way and your hips lifted, chasing him, but he pushed your knees to your chest and shouldered between your legs. “You’re not going to be able to walk when I’m done with you.”
“Good. I wanna feel you for days.” you said, ignoring the pang in your heart that told you that you were going to miss him.
“Fuck,” he spat. Your cunt drenched his cock as he slipped back inside, and your breath hitched as he hit deeper at the new angle.
“Right there!” you cried, arching up against him, “oh, God, right there!”
“One more. Give me one more,” Javier demanded, lacing your fingers together and pining your hands above your head, “But not until I tell you.”
You nodded eagerly, happy to give him whatever he wanted. “I get to tell you when too. Please, Javi.”
“Whatever you want baby. You fucking earned it.”
He kept slamming into you and every stroke of his cock rubbed against your inner walls perfectly. You swore you could almost feel every ridge and every vein of his thick length as he fucked you. Your third orgasm was tantalizingly within reach. You just needed his blessing, and you’d break.
“Alright, baby,” he panted as he rocked his hips against yours, grinding his pelvis against your clit, “cum all over my cock.”
Just like that, that tight coil inside you he’d been winding up all night snapped, and you came for a third time with a wanton cry. His name tumbled from your lips repeatedly as your body writhed beneath him, cunt spasming around his cock.
“I need to cum,” he ground out, voice cutting through the haze of pleasure.
“Ask me nicely,” you teased when your senses had returned to you just enough that you decided it was your turn to play with Javier. You wanted it to be just as good for him as he made it for you.
“Please.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
“Baby, please.” Javier’s broken words trembling around the edges as he begged you. His brown eyes, eclipsed by his dilated pupils and wet around the edges, stared deeply into yours and you almost gave in.
“Don’t stop.”
He made a desperate sound but kept going, snapping his hips against yours harder and harder.
“Almost there, Javi. You’re doing so good for me,” you praised, encouraging him. His jaw clenched and you kissed his neck, sucking hard on the straining muscles. His hands gripped yours so tight it hurt, and his face screwed up as he panted with each thrust. “You can cum for me, Javi. Fill me up.”
His lips crashed against yours in a desperate gratitude, and his hips stuttered as he came hard. He gasped for breath even as your mouths moved messily together. His cock twitched inside you as he painted your cunt like you’d been patiently waiting for all evening, until his body gave out and he collapsed on top of you, still locked in an embrace.
“Was that good for you?” you asked. When you didn’t get an answer, you prodded his side. He startled, eyes suddenly blinking up at you.
“What?”
“I asked if that was good for you?”
“Yeah. Yeah, that was... it’s always good with you but that was...” He trailed off and you thought he might’ve actually fallen asleep on you. “I’ve never cum so hard in my life. I think I fucking blacked out.”
“I didn’t know my pussy was that good.”
“Are you kidding me? I fucking love your pussy.” He was positively beaming at you. He cursed with a sigh as he laid his head back on your chest and you threaded your fingers through his damp locks, holding him close while you could.
… . …
You sat half in Javier’s lap in the middle of your bed, sheets strewn about from your previous activities, both completely naked but freshly showered. He moved his mouth against yours, tasting you, drinking you in until he was as lightheaded from your kisses as from the champagne. His hands roamed your body, touching you for no real reason other than to memorize your gentle curves. One hand cupped a breast and the other squeezed your hip, both moving slowly until they met to cradle your face.
He pulled away to look at you. No fancy dress, no jewelry, no make-up. Just you.
“Still stunning,” he whispered.
You smiled softly and pressed your lips to the bridge of his nose. “Still handsome,” you countered. Chills erupted across his skin, but you mistook his reaction. “Come here.” you pulled the blankets up as you settled back against the headboard. He followed, swiping the bottle of champagne off the nightstand. Without bothering with glasses, surely a disservice to something so expensive, he took a swig and handed it to you. It was bubbly and light and perfect for the evening.
“You never told me what you’re doing for the holidays.”
“Oh, nothing much,” you responded as you took the bottle from him. “Bev’s family celebrates Christmas. They always do gifts with the kids in the morning but then her mom and in-laws and whoever else in the family is around go over for a big dinner. She insists I come to keep her sane. Her mom and mother-in-law don’t exactly get along.”
“What about New Year’s?”
You took a long pull before sighing. “Well, I usually spend the night with Sunny watching old movies and drinking too much wine.” Your face pinched. “That sounds much sadder when I say it out loud.”
“You don’t mind being alone?”
“It’s been this way for years now.” You smiled, a rueful thing. “I’m used to it. I’m usually so tired after the quarter ends that I don’t mind the time alone.” You tried to brush it off, but he could hear the sadness in your voice.
“You could–” Javier stopped himself. “You could call. Anytime. I’ll give you my dad’s home number so you can reach me.”
That time your smile reached your eyes, crinkling the corners as you looked away bashfully. “That’s really sweet of you.” You reached for his hand and added, “I’ll call you at midnight in Laredo.”
“We’ll talk until midnight in Los Angeles.”
You curled up next to him before Javier could decipher your expression.
When he felt your breathing even out, surely sated from the sex and exhausted after the quarter, he pried the bottle from your grasp. He finished the last bit before setting it aside and switching off the lamp, careful not to disturb you.
Javier held you close, not unlike the way you’d held him the night before. He knew he needed to get his shit together. He didn’t want you to see that part of him. He needed to protect you from his past. But he didn’t know how to do that when he couldn’t even protect himself.
He flicked off the light and hoped for a peaceful sleep.
… . …
The first thing you noticed when you woke up the next morning was the dark bruise that you’d sucked onto Javier’s neck the night before. You ran your fingertips over it, outwardly cringing but inwardly, well, preening. This time it had been you who left those little love bites on his neck.
“Did you mark me?” he asked, his voice barely more than a quiet rumble. “Fucking felt that last night.”
“I didn’t mean to,” you answered, looking up at him as innocently as possible.
“Don’t lie to me,” he grumbled as his eyes blinked open. “You were a woman determined last night.”
“Why didn’t you stop me?”
“I liked it,” he grinned, but it faded quickly. “I forgot I was going home today. My dad’s picking me up at the airport.”
“Oh shit,” you laughed, burying your face against his chest.
“Don’t laugh. That’s not funny.”
“Maybe you should try buttoning your shirt like a normal person for once.”
In one smooth movement, he flipped you over and caged you beneath him. “You’re pushing your luck,” he tried to warn, but the grin on his face and the glint in his eyes betrayed him.
“What time is your flight?” you asked, soothing a hand across his face.
“One.” He glanced over at the clock. “It’s ten now.”
You wondered, just for a moment, if he would stay with you if you asked him to. If he would pass the holidays with you so you wouldn’t have to be alone. But that was foolish. And more than a little selfish. He had his family to go home to.
“You should probably go.”
“Yeah,” he sighed, “I should.”
He eased his hold on you but made no move to leave. Not until he’d placed a kiss on your lips and one on your forehead in a gentle goodbye.

Move On IV (Modern!Ivar/Reader)
A/N: Hello!💕 I don’t even know how I managed to finish this with the crazy week I’ve had💀 I had 3 exams, a huge paper to hand in and a presentation. But somehow, I did this too and I wanted to post it as soon as possible🥰 I’m quite happy of how this one turned out considering I hadn’t that much time to work on it. So I hope you like it!♥️ There’s not many parts left (2 or 3) but I have an idea for a “sequel” so if you guys like this one, maybe when it’s done I’ll work on that!
Now enjoy, stay safe and enjoy the holidays, even if this year isn’t the best one for celebrations😅 See you soon🥰
Warnings: mentions of alcohol, mentions of sex, angst, implied Hvitserk x Reader, don’t kill me for this lol

You actually liked to go shopping. You enjoyed walking around the shops and looking at beautiful clothes and shoes. You didn't like to try on the clothes, though, because the comparisons between the model on the photos and you were awful.
"Aren't you gonna try that on, Y/N?"
Torvi's voice startled you. She just got out of one of the fitting rooms, wearing a beautiful silver dress that made her look even better than the model. You widened your eyes.
"I... Don't think this will fit me" you glanced at the clothes they made you pick. Party clothes; tight dresses, short skirts, low cut crop tops... "I'm more of a comfy sweatpants and oversized hoodies girl" you raised an eyebrow.
Torvi chuckled, rolling her eyes and shaking her head.
"Come on, Y/N, I want to see how you look on them!"
She looked at herself on the mirror, frowning softly. You looked at the pile of clothes on the wooden table and wondered why you agreed to go shopping with Torvi, Gunhild and Lagertha when you could be at home, eating cookies and watching Disney movies with Hvitserk.
They insisted on going shopping and then go and grab lunch. As you barely had any social life anymore, you thought it'd be a great idea. Then they entered one of those expensive shops that you could only admire from afar and glare with jealousy to the people that exited the store with a couple of bags.
"Okay, I think this is the one" Torvi shrugged happily "What do you think?" She turned around and you smiled softly.
"You look beautiful"
"Thank you" her smile widened "You're the sweetest, Y/N"
"Are you girls done?" Lagertha's voice startled you, her head peeked through the door.
"Nearly" Torvi winked at her "What do you think about this dress? Y/N likes it"
"I think you look perfect on it" Lagertha smiled at her ex daughter in law. You were still amazed with the narrative of that family, but it wasn't your place to judge "What about you, Y/N? Did you try anything?"
You opened your mouth to speak, but Torvi interrupted you.
"She didn't, I keep telling her she should, but she won't listen" she raised an eyebrow and you groan, rubbing your face.
"Come on, we're not leaving until you try something on" Lagertha chuckled.
Sighing, you rubbed your face and grabbed the clothes, rolling your eyes as you entered the fitting room, making Torvi and Lagertha smirk in victory.
_________________________________________
"So... We could go out" Torvi looked excited as you stared at your lunch. You had nothing against modern, expensive restaurant but you weren't sure if it was legal that they asked that amount of money for that.
"We're already out, Torvi" Gunhild chuckled. Out of all of them, she was the one you could relate to the most, she was the most calm, the quiet, but also as fierce as Lagertha if not more.
"I know" Torvi rolled her eyes "But maybe we should go out to a nightclub, you know, I haven't been out in forever and I want to, this whole 'plan the perfect wedding' thing is stressing me out"
"You don't need to plan the perfect wedding, every wedding is perfect when you're in love" Lagertha raised her cup of champagne softly, and you chewed at your food slowly.
"I know, I know, I just... Ubbe is the one, you know?"
"We know, Torvi" Gunhild smiled widely at her "But you see... My own wedding with Björn was quite rushed, and still... Magical" she blushed softly, looking down.
You smiled, remembering her wedding. You had attended with Ivar, who wasn't too excited to go to his half-brother's wedding and was nearly obligated by his family. The two of you left very early, but not before having sex on the limousine Björn had rented.
"I know you will have the same thing with Ubbe, I can see it" Lagertha caressed Torvi's hand over the table.
"Okay stop getting emotional, I know what you're doing" she narrowed her eyes at them "Can we go out, please?"
They laughed, and even you chuckled softly.
"Y/N, I trust you, don't leave me alone" she pouted at you "Tonight?"
"I'm afraid I work tonight" you smiled apologetically "But you all can go out! I'm sure you'll have a better time without me"
"No, we need you" she sighed "Tomorrow?"
"Yeah, I suppose tomorrow is fine..."
"Perfect!" She giggled.
"I'm afraid my time on nightclubs is already over, girls" Lagertha laughed "But I wish you have a great time, enjoy your youth"
"I think I can" Gunhild nodded "But I'll leave early"
Torvi looked satisfied.
"Okay, I can call Sigurd's new girlfriend too"
"Sigurd has a girlfriend?" You raised an eyebrow. You didn't know anything, but as you barely talked to him due to his bad relationship with Ivar, it didn't surprise you.
"Yeah, I met her when we had dinner with them to tell them about the wedding... She's cute, and nice... It looks like our dear Sigurd finally settled down... Ubbe was relieved to hear about her, he was really worried that the rockstar life was too much for him"
Even Sigurd, the now semi-famous musician that girls pursued after his gigs, the soft and sweet Sigurd that had had nearly as many girls as Hvitserk, had settled down. He had an stable relationship. You, on the other hand, had a shitty job and spent your nights watching Disney movies.
You kept eating as Torvi talked about her favorite clubs, trying to decide which one was more suitable for a girls' night. But suddenly, someone entering the restaurant, and your eyes widened. Torvi stopped talking and Lagertha raised an eyebrow, turning her head to look at the door.
Of all the people you'd think you might run into on a posh restaurant, Aslaug wasn't one of them. She looked as beautiful and flawless as always, with her hair tied on an elegant bun and her subtle makeup that made her pretty eyes stand out. Ivar had his father's eye color, but the shape was much more similar to his mother's. They resembled each other, and it made your stomach turn.
She looked around the restaurant, and when her eyes found yours, she looked surprised. An strange expression crossed her face, but she flashed you a sweet smile. Aslaug seemed cold and distant to most people, but to you she was always sweet and caring, treating you like the daughter she always wanted but never got.
Her smile turned a bit stern when she looked at Lagertha and Torvi, ignoring Gunhild. Then she turned to the bar, smiling politely at the waitress.
Then the eyes turned to you. You cleared your throat nervously and avoided them. It was true that, out of Ivar's family, the only people you had a close relationship with were Hvitserk, Aslaug, Floki and Helga, and sometimes Ubbe, even if that changed when he decided to get closer to his half brother and Lagertha. Now things had changed, and you still felt a bit out of place in this new social circle Alfred had introduced to you, but your link to the "enemy" was much stronger.
"I... I'm going to say hello" you muttered.
No one said anything, and you nearly felt sick. When you arrived to the bar, Aslaug was talking to a man next to her. You hadn't even realized he walked in after her, like her favored son, she had the gift of making everyone aware of only her presence by just walking in a room.
"Hi, Aslaug"
She turned to face you, her face lightened up and her smile widened. This time it reached her eyes.
"Y/N, my sweet girl, hello" she hugged you tightly, and you sighed, hugging her back. You missed her "I was wondering if you'd say hello... How are you, my dear?"
"I'm fine" you nodded "How are you?"
"I'm good, honey, I'm so happy to see you, I was worried when you..." She licked her lips, nervously "I called you a couple of times, but you didn't pick up"
"Oh, yeah, sorry about that... I kind of neglected my phone for a few weeks"
"I understand" she nodded. If anyone in the world understood exactly how you felt, it was Aslaug "I truly do, Hvitserk has been talking to me about you, I'm glad you haven't completely cut off communications with my family, we need you"
"Of course" you giggled "Hvitserk is one of my closest friends, and that won't change"
I hope, you thought. You kind of felt very replaceable.
"I'm glad to see you" she repeated, the smile never left her lips "Remember you will always be welcome in our home, Y/N"
"Thank you, Aslaug" you nearly teared up "I think I should go back now..."
"Yeah, go and have fun, dear" she caressed your cheek softly, not even mentioning the people you were with "Goodbye"
"Bye, have a good day" you shot her another wide smile.
______________________________________________
Thora looked impressed when you arrived to the cafeteria with Torvi, Lagertha and Gunhild. She was polite to them, but it was obvious that she was surprised to see you hanging out with them.
'Wow' was the only thing she said once they left, making you promise you'd wear the dress you had bought that morning to the club the night after.
"Don't even mention it" you groaned, rubbing your face as the both of you got ready to start your shift.
"I didn't take you for someone that had brunch with these people" Thora held back a laugh, and you hit her arm playfully.
"They're really nice" you muttered "They're just trying to make me feel better"
"Yeah, they seem nice, but... Are you sure you fit in that group, Y/N?" She raised an eyebrow "Don't get offended, but I never pictured you in there"
"No, I don't" you sighed "As I'm seeing Alfred now, I suppose they see me like one of them"
"You're seeing..."
"Not like that" you glared at her "Shut up, we're just friends"
This time she didn't hold back the laugh.
"I went on a date with Hvitserk" she cleared her throat, and you looked up at her again, interested.
"And?"
"Nothing, he's just not my type" she shrugged, making you groan.
"He likes you, I know it" you winked at her.
Thora shook her head.
"Hvitserk is the kind of man that likes everyone" she laughed "It's okay, he's nice and fun, but not what I'm looking for... I have another date tonight, though, with a guy I met on Tinder"
"You're on Tinder?" You frowned as you kept drying the coffee cups.
"Yes, and you should too" she giggled when you widened your eyes at her "Come on, Y/N, you're young, hot and cute, stop thinking about a boy that didn't appreciate you, you deserve to spend your nights having orgasms, not chocolate ice-cream"
"But I like chocolate ice-cream" you muttered.
"More than orgasms?" She chuckled, and just when you were about to answer, she interrupted you "Don't answer, you're weird" she rolled her eyes.
Hvitserk surprised you at the end of your shift with a bag full of beers. He had brought his car and offered you a late night with beer, chips and reality shows. As it was probably the best plan you could have, you said yes, and opened one of the beers even before entering the car. You saw Hvitserk glance at Thora as she stayed to close the cafeteria and wait for her date, chatting with a girl she knew from university that visited her at work.
"You should work a bit for it" you said, raising an eyebrow at him as he drove to your home with a poker face.
"She's not interested" he shrugged. As Hvitserk wasn't used to having girls reject him, it had hurt his pride.
"But you can make her interested if you do things right" you chuckled "You Lothbrok boys are always waiting for girls battling their eyelashes at you"
Hvitserk laughed.
"You're right, what can I say? I'm surprised you didn't battle your eyelashes at me yet"
"I was busy with your brother, Hvitty" you giggled "Until he got tired of me"
Hvitserk's smile faded slowly, and as soon as he could, he put his hand on your thigh, turning to look at you.
"How are you, Y/N?"
"I'm fine, it's okay" you muttered, shrugging "I saw your mother today"
"Yeah she told me" he nodded, his attention back to the road "She also asked me not to say anything to Ivar" he sighed "It's because she doesn't like Freydis, she came home for dinner the other day and I could swear she would have loved to sink the knife on her neck" he held back a smile.
God, you loved Aslaug.
"Why? What happens with Freydis that no one likes her?" You asked, curious.
"You've seen them together, haven't you?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, briefly... Alfred and I left immediately, I barely talked to them"
"Ivar is infatuated with her" he sighed "He's lost his mind, Y/N, he's not even rational now, his whole world is Freydis, it's not love, it's... I'm worried about him" he frowned "He's changing, he can't see anything past her"
"Have you tried to talk to him? Maybe he needs a bit of big brother guidance"
"I can't talk to him, he's... He doesn't listen. No matter what I tell him, he doesn't trust me"
"Ivar has a hard time trusting people" you said softly "Maybe..."
"Don't defend him" he glared at you "I know what you mean, but he's known her for a few months, Y/N, and he's pushing away every single person that was important to him, he's not even going to physical therapy anymore"
You frowned a bit. Ivar hated therapy, but he always understood he needed to do it. Suddenly you felt the need of texting him.
"Stop worrying about him, Y/N" Hvitserk narrowed his eyes "It's my job to worry about him because he's my little brother, but you can forget about him now"
When you arrived home, Hvitserk went directly to the kitchen to heat up the sandwiches you had taken from the cafeteria and put the beers in the fridge as you entered your bedroom, sighing tiredly.
"I'm going to take a shower" you raised your voice, and after Hvitserk hummed, probably with his mouth full of food, you entered the bathroom, closing the door and taking off your clothes.
The warm water relaxed your body and you were able to finally stop thinking, leaving your mind completely blank.
It didn't last, though.
As soon as you left the shower, you unlocked your phone, looking for Ivar's contact. The last text messages you had exchanged were from the last days of your relationship. Ivar didn't like to text, so he usually only replied with monosyllables and then called you to hear your voice, but in those last weeks he hadn't even replied. In that moment, you had tried to convince yourself that it was normal, that he might hadn't feel like texting you, but then he had broken up with you. Scrolling down the messages, you could tell exactly the day he had realized he wasn't in love with you anymore -if he had ever been in love, which you started to doubt-. You let your throat ache and a couple of tears run down your cheek before wiping them away and writing the message you had in mind.
Hi Ivar. Are you okay?
You didn't think he'd reply. But after hearing people saying how weird Ivar was acting (even more than the usual) and how Freydis had changed him, you started to wonder if he was okay. No matter how much he hurt you, he was still someone you cared deeply about.
A knock on the bathroom door startled you.
"Y/N? Are you alive?" Hvitserk sounded a bit worried as he knocked on the door. You cleared your throat and dried the few tears on your face.
"Yes! Sorry! I'll be out in five!"
____________________________________
The beers didn't last as long as you thought. It was past midnight when Hvitserk convinced you to open the bottle of vodka you had bought months ago and already forgot why.
It resulted on a blurry night, as the both of you started feeling more and more happy, you watched stupid movies and laughed at them. You forgot about Ivar, the text and the ache in your chest. Hvitserk was the only one that could make you forget everything and laugh so much.
"Come on, that never happens" Hvitserk groaned, rubbing his eyes with his voice already a bit unsteady. The brothers had a high alcohol tolerance, but Hvitserk was always the one that got drunk first "The girl never runs back to us, we're the ones that have to chase them"
You giggled drunkenly, hitting his arm.
"Yeah, we have to make you work for it"
He rolled his eyes, drinking directly from the bottle now.
"It's always easier to go out to a pub and have sex with another girl"
You giggled again. For some reason, every single thing he said felt like the funniest thing ever.
"Yeah, we can do that too" you smirked "For example, as you don't want to work for Thora, she's now out on a date and probably having sex with another guy while you're in my apartment getting drunk and criticizing terrible movies... Who's losing now?" You raised an eyebrow, smiling in victory. Hvitserk frowned and glared at you as you laid back on the couch.
"Are you saying I should go out and find someone to have sex with?"
"No" you giggled "I'm saying you should call Thora tomorrow"
"Anyway" he scoffed again "You should be the one going out to have sex"
"Me?" You laughed "Why?"
"When was the last time you had an orgasm, Y/N?"
You closed your eyes and pressed your fingers against your temple. It was hard to think when you had that... Noise in your head.
"I can't remember" you muttered "Probably before..." You hummed. He knew what you meant.
"What?" He widened his eyes, and his jaw dropped "It's been months, Y/N, what the hell?" He groaned "You didn't even touch yourself?"
You were so drunk that you didn't even flinch at his question.
"I don't have time for that" you frowned.
"Well, now I know why you're always pouting and looking like a lost puppy"
You opened your eyes to glare at him, even if you only saw a blurry bulge on the other side of your couch.
"I don't pout" you scoffed "And I'm just not ready to get to know someone new, Hvitty"
"You don't have to know them, you just need to fuck them" he shrugged "It works, you know, it helps to move on... In fact, this is what you should do; you should go out, pick someone, take them to my flat and fuck them on Ivar's bed"
You couldn't help the burst of laugher that brought tears to your eyes. Hvitserk looked amused.
"I'm serious, that should teach that asshole a fucking lesson, he needs it"
"I miss him" you muttered when the laughter died down "I texted him"
You couldn't see it, but Hvitserk sighed and rubbed his eyes. He moved then, startling you when he laid down next to you, hugging you softly. It made you smile.
"You need to stop, Y/N" he whispered then, and the lump in the throat came back "You really need to move on, you're amazing, and there's so many people in the world that deserves you much more than my stupid brother"
"I know" you sighed "But I want him"
Hvitserk hummed. He knew the feeling. He also knew you'd get over it, with time, but now it was difficult.
"That's why you need to go out there and enjoy your youth, Y/N" he drank from the bottle again, making you laugh "Get drunk, have sex and stop living like you're fifty and getting over your second divorce"
"Sounds easy when you say it" you giggled turning around to face him.
"You just need to do it" he muttered. Your eyelids already felt heavy, and when you opened your eyes, you saw Ivar. You didn't even know why, Ivar and Hvitserk didn't really look alike, but in that moment you saw him, his deep blue eyes staring at you, his pouty lips, his cute nose... Even that nervous expression he had whenever the two of you were alone. Your heart started beating faster and faster, and you felt his arms around you. You could even smell him. Oh, gods, you missed him so much. You would give anything, your own life, just to be able to kiss him again, even if it was for the last time.
So you just leant in and kissed him.
He kissed you back, but that kiss didn't feel like Ivar's... This one was much more rushed, it was good but... It lacked Ivar's passion and intensity. It wasn't the same.
Anyway, you kept kissing him, as his hands roamed up and down your body. You might knew you were kissing Hvitserk, but decided to ignore it. Maybe he was right and you just needed someone to move on.
_______________________________________
Ivar just glared at his phone. He had been glaring at it for the past two hours, since Freydis left, saying she was meeting some friends that night. Then he checked his phone and he nearly dropped it when he saw your name on his screen. Why were you texting him now? He thought you hated him. It was easier that way.
He rubbed his face, groaning and laying back on his bed. His legs hurt so much that day... No matter how many painkillers he had taken, how much he rested. He was feeling like someone just ran over him with a truck.
Hvitserk didn't come home either. Not that it made a difference. The long nights they spent drinking cheap beer and talking about family and life were long forgotten. They weren't as close now. He was probably fucking someone he just met, or getting drunk. Did he mention he'd go to your house to see you? Maybe. Ivar had stopped listening whenever your name came up, trying to avoid that rage he felt the last time he saw you, getting all cozy and giggly with Alfred. The fucking Alfred.
You always insisted he was only a friend, but he knew better, if he hadn't left you for Freydis, you'd probably have ended up leaving him for Alfred. He was better for you anyway.
Hi Ivar. Are you okay?
Why did you care? Were you thinking about him and suddenly wanted to know if he was okay? Did anyone say anything to you?
He had to hold back a smile when he saw your profile picture. It was you in Iceland, hugging one of the huskies Floki had on his house in Skógar. Freki, the husky you had fallen in love with, was infatuated with you, too, and Ivar found very amusing how he would follow you anywhere, trying to get your attention. It reminded him of himself, actually, annoyed when you diverted your attention to something that wasn't him. Ivar had a serious talk with the dog, explaining him that he wasn't allowed to get into bed with you, let alone cuddle you in your sleep, the only living being that could do that was Ivar.
He took that picture one morning you decided to take Freki for a walk. The husky had been so excited to see you that he had knocked you down to the floor, making you laugh. The picture had you looking at the camera, hugging Freki as he tried to lick your cheek.
When he locked his phone again, the warm tingling on his chest disappeared. It made him sigh, closing his eyes. Freydis was perfect, wasn't she? She was beautiful, sweet, she loved him. She made him understand he was special, that he needed no one but her.
She was perfect. She was the one, and she loved him as much as he did, she always said it. At least a few times a day, she smiled sweetly and said that she loved him, so that meant she loved him, right? You didn't say it that much. But then again, you would have never left him alone knowing he was in pain.
Shaking his head, he unlocked his phone again and wrote a quick text.
Yeah, thanks.
Then he deleted your number. He didn't want to see that photo with Freki, smiling at him, he didn't want to think about you or about what you would have done. You weren't part of his life anymore.

hi do you accept fanfic requests? because imagine a love, rosie levihan au? the childhood friends to lovers slowburn? the angst in the middle but it gets resolved by the end?
Title: Lock and Key (1/2)
Summary:
"He thought back to the dingy small town, back to the dingy cage. Hange was just one canary who flew off. And Levi was the one left behind in the cage.
So he kept the lock in place. He held onto the key. Just in case, she did decide to come back."
Levi and Hange are childhood friends and Levi just can't bring himself to tell her how he feels.

Notes: I'm sorry anon I did not follow the whole prompt. I took some liberties with it but I hope you still enjoy <3. Quick warning, it's a little angstier (maybe?)
It all started with a party. Years later, Levi was sure, during his off days, he would go back it---to the flashes of strobe lights, the guitar riffs, the beat music, the strong taste of alcohol burning at his throat.
Not for any of those sensations though. He felt like he was dying. They were painful,o verwhelming and Levi was frozen on his seat, cocktail glass between his shaking fingertips, the unnatural heat grazing his cheeks.
He didn’t want to be there.
But he would only be a high school student once. Soon enough they would be sending applications for college and he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the party scene with the thrill of ‘illegality.’
Soon, Levi had to admit, it wasn’t just about the experience. Who cared if it was illegal or legall. It was never just about the experience. He lived his whole high school life not engaging with that type of crowd.
It was Hange who got him just breaking past that comfort bubble he set up for himself, for just that one night. And the experience came with a burning question.
When can we do it again?
Hange was submitting applications to colleges outside the country. Levi didn’t know the odds exactly, he had been too terrified to ask. Something was telling him though that Hange wouldn’t be going to college nearby. In a years time, she might not be next to him.
Hange. The Hange that had been such a constant in his life. And when he was counting down days while basking in uncertainties, he was just a little more open to very uncomfortable feelings.
Hange didn't seem so terrified."This might just be our last hurrah before entrance exams," she said, a cheeky smile on her face.
I know that. Levi said. And as he saw that intent look in her gaze, all for him he was sure. Did he look like he was enjoying? How could he be enjoying it though when the music was playing in time to his pounding head?
“Toilet,” Levi said.
“Okay, you want me to order something else?”
“Just order anything. It’s your birthday,” Levi said as he teetered just a little bit towards the bathroom stall. They had picked a corner table at least and fortunately, the walk to the bathroom didn’t feel like so much of a journey.
Levi stayed in the toilet for a while longer. There were two stalls but by some divine grace, the bathroom was empty and Levi had to act quickly if he wanted to get anything out.
He studied his features. He was bright pink under the white light. He was occasionally blurry. The bright lights that came with reflections got his head a little pounding. But he thought he was in a fairly decent position to at least try.
He had plans on how to do it. Subtly so it wouldn’t hurt. Smartly so he only elicited enough of a reaction to placate his own doubt. And smoothly, so it would end in a blink of an eye.
“Hange, there’s a post I found on Reddit…” Levi rehearsed. Well technically that part was true but he didn’t want her to think he actually rehearsed that.
“Hey Hange, with college exams coming up soon… and your plans…” Levi started. Did he seem just a little too stalkery then? Was he supposed to be thinking of her plans when she hadn’t even told him anything?”
Levi had rehearsed, but the answers came out a little too impromptu. “I have an idea…”
“An idea? That sounds interesting. Everytime we work together in groupworks you never have ideas…” Hange’s voice was slurring, she was a little too talkative and Levi was hesitating.
He cleared his throat. “An idea…” He tested it himself, just to make sure it wasn’t coming out faltered or stilted like Hange’s voice then. “A marriage pact?”
Hange’s eyes widened then. And for a second, there was a flash of sobriety in them. “A marriage pact? This sounds interesting…”
Levi was quick to amend it, scolding whatever hell ghost changed those words before he said it. “Dating pact. I meant a dating pact. We’re not gonna get married without dating of course... I saw this on Reddit but what if… When we’re twenty-eight, when you finish that PhD you’ve always wanted and we’re still single… What if we try dating? Don’t get me wrong… dating just feels weird but I think that I might be missing something here but maybe when I’m that old, that would be a good time to try it out.”
Hange hummed in thought. “That’s an idea. We’re probably still too young to be thinking about dating huh? And with college exams coming up…” The gears in her brain were moving, Levi was sure. “But, if let’s say you find someone… Or I find someone?”
If you find someone? Just imagining the phantom man had Levi catching something in his throat. He looked away as he felt the bile rise up his throat, a little shaken by that moment where his imagination went wild for just a second. But he wasn’t supposed to feel that way.
Or maybe he should be feeling that way. After all, how many drinks had he downed until that point. Hange was starting to be a little wild too. It wasn’t an all too uncharacteristic move. She had always been the loud one, the more extroverted one.
But she was always particularly studious too and just seeing Hange jumped out of her seat and navigate her way through the crowds and towards the dancefloor had Levi suspended in disbelief for a second.
But he followed suit.
The strobe lights were brighter. The music was louder and in a way, it had devolved into ringing in his ears. Those were only secondary.
The moment he caught up to Hange, he found himself holding her by the arm, navigating all the way until her hand, just for a better grip. She was an anchor to reality, an anchor to reasoning beyond the harrowing effects of the lights and sounds.
Her skin on his wasn’t an overwhelming outburst of sensations. It was warm, it was smooth. The pull as she danced to some rhythm was predictable.
He had known her for years. Hange had always embodied comfort for him.
Tipsy, overwhelmed and a little unhinged at that moment, Levi danced to her rhythm and he rode the dizzying trappings of his inebriated state.
Riding such feelings though had its own collection of surprises and soon Levi found himself on the rooftop of the bar, enjoying the feel of the concrete right below him and beneath it, the shaking from the bass of the music just on the floor below him. It was faint though and there were sounds and sensations more intimate at that moment.
Hange’s breaths and the laughs in between were shaky. Her grip on his hand was tighter, far from painless but he couldn’t complain. God forbid, it might just end.
“Levi, I thought about the dating pact. What happens if you find someone? Or I find someone?”
“Then we don’t push through with the pact. Simple as that,” Levi said.
“You’ll still be there right? Even if I find someone?”
Levi felt a wave relief rush through him and he let out a harsh breath, a product of his own tipsiness then and his own discomfort at their circumstances. “We’ve been best friends since before we could remember. What’s a few more decades?”
“We might lose touch… I dunno? Did I tell you? I applied for colleges abroad. This just isn’t the best environment for research.”
“Then I’ll visit you.”
“And if I find someone there?”
“Then I’ll be the cool uncle to your kids, if you ever have them.”
***
He didn’t have to think about it over the months. Or maybe he just chose not to think about it.
Work, responsibilities and life as a whole never gave him any breaks to think so much as the far future.
What was the point of thinking about a future when he wasn’t working on it? So Levi worked his part time job, he studied and he prepared for his own entrance exams. Even when entrance exams ended, Levi was at least able to focus on the hell weeks before graduation.
He didn’t expect at all to have to think about it again, in a coffee shop of all places after one of his own shifts. He was in the middle of organizing the tea bags at the front of the shop when the reminder presented itself.
The reminder of such musings came as a clang of wind chimes, some huffing and puffing and some rhythmically unhinged footsteps. Hange appeared out of the corner and into the empty cafe, letter in hand.
Her cheeks were flushed and Levi had to note that she was wearing too little layers.
Levi glanced at the clock. “Did you just run here from your house at nine in the evening?”
Hange nodded. “Yes, I did.” Her house wasn’t too far, a ten minute walk if they were taking a relaxing stroll. It was nine in the evening though and it didn’t look like Hange had even bothered to put on a coat. Excitement probably did those types of things to people. She waved the letter up in the air and her breaths were only getting quicker and more unpredictable.
As if she was struggling to speak. “Slow down,” Levi said.
He untied his apron, pulled it off and sat on one of the tables closest to the counter. He patted the table, just a simple gesture for her to sit. He could spare a few minutes, his shift was ending soon anyway and not many people would be entering a breakfast cafe an hour before closing.
Hange needed a few more minutes to gather herself but she at least had some courtesy to slip the letter in front of him. “Read.”
We are pleased to inform you…
Full scholarship. Research stipend.
“I passed!” Hange said. “I’m leaving this dingy town for college!”
Levi was happy. He was sure of it. Maybe he had spent just a little too much time thinking logistics that it hadn’t manifested so naturally as a smile. He had to force it. He had to widen his eyes and he had to nod his head to express any approval. But really Hange’s face then a mixture of surprise, joy, ecstasy had him excited too. It had him shaking.
But there were just some things he couldn't shake off even with the most natural movements. Hange seemed to notice. “It’s only a plane ride away.”
But to get to the plane, one would need to get through at least three local trains, then the airport express then the actual airport and just the idea of Hange standing behind the barriers of money, bureaucracy and time was overwhelming in itself. Since they were young, Hange had only ever been a few blocks away. That wasn’t something he would have wanted to tell her though. She might just think he was crazy. “You’re right… It isn’t too far.”
“Didn’t you apply too?”
“I wouldn’t be able to pay for the tuition but I tried for a scholarship. It’s a long shot but…”
“Well, I heard they consider grades, extracurriculars as well as part time jobs.”
Levi knew that. He had done the research way beforehand. But he averaged Bs and his own financial situation and the need for part time jobs meant he had little to no engagement with other extracurriculars.
Still, Levi found himself hoping. When the letter arrived, left on the counter by his mother. Levi was quick to open it, his heart was racing and maybe his fingers had faltered a bit as he ripped open the top of the envelope.
We regret to inform you…
At that moment, Levi almost regretted even applying for the scholarship. The school didn’t even consider him as a student.
“There are community colleges,” his mother had said.
Conditional Acceptance. Scholarship denied. He wasn’t the type to hide those things from Hange. And maybe Hange read the room, maybe it had her treading rough grounds, more than Levi would have liked.
Graduation loomed like a vulture ready to strike. The difference was he knew exactly when the vulture would strike. And sometimes it flew over them in moments where Levi could have sworn graduation was still a long time away.
Hange didn’t seem to notice. Or maybe she didn’t care. Hange though was something special. She prattled on about college plans, about her dormitory preparation and even about her thesis topics which were still five years away.
Then suddenly, she just stopped. Suddenly conversation topics shifted to studies, to research paper topics, to the most interesting customers Levi would run into at the tea shop.
Hange was still excited. Levi had known her long enough to figure it out. When Hange wasn’t holding anything, she was twiddling her thumbs. When she was watching her words, she tended to speak slower, she tended to stutter and she tended to pick the most professional words that most high school students wouldn’t even consider vernacular.
Levi brought it up again over team, a few months after the rejection letter, a few weeks after he noticed that subtle change in her demeanor. “Hange, how are your plans for college? You’re gonna have to leave in a month right?” Hange was leaving a few weeks after graduation, to give herself time to adjust to the new city.
Hange’s mouth dropped open. “I mean, yes… I will be leaving in a month.” She had been in the middle of mentioning words like ‘diction,’ and ‘sovereign’ when describing her writing style for her final paper and it looked like she was still trying to adjust.
Maybe Levi had introduced the topic a little too suddenly. It was too late to go back though. “So, we have a week or two after graduation right?”
“In between packing… Yes,” Hange said with a shrug. How Hange had mellowed into something hesitant, almost lifeless had been a mystery to Levi. For only that split second though. Hange cleared her throat. “How do you feel about it?”
It turned out, there had always been an elephant in the room. And it bared its fangs then, hidden right under the trunk. The air turned heavy, making it almost difficult to breathe.
He was the only one though capable of finding his own breath again. “What can I say? I didn’t pass.” Levi dropped his shoulders and let out a weak sigh, not loud enough to make himself seem pathetic. Rejection letters had already left him feeling pathetic for months.
Hange responded with a wry smile. “I’m sorry about that. I should have realized earlier. I should have been more sensitive.” She was kind. She was empathetic. She was always striving to be better. And she always had been.
At that moment, in the cafe, tapping her fingers on the porcelain cup, Levi saw it. She was a kettle, a pot ready to burst, only covered by a stubbornly heavy lid.
A lid she had put just for him. That was the moment Levi realized, he might just be pulling her back.
***
There was another elephant in the room. An elephant that followed with heavy steps that shook the whole room.
At least to Levi it seemed that way.
Uncertainty was a very heavy thing. When he could barely see what would be at the end of the tunnel---the end being the day Hange lugs a lifetime worth of belongings and takes a train to the airport--- Levi felt the pressure of his whole life in front of him crammed into the next two weeks.
A day after graduating, when the countdown just became a little too clearer, Hange wasn’t next to him and he had to make do. A day-long trip to the capital to get some student visa shit sorted out.
She wouldn’t have called it ‘student visa shit,’ she had said something nicer definitely, something that embodied her life long dreams of a living outside of their ‘dingy old town.’ That ‘student visa thing’ had Levi uncertain, twiddling his thumbs like she did many times before, the student visa thing had him feeling like ‘shit.’
So he called it ‘shit,’ and he enjoyed the bitter venom in his mouth, the sweet release and the comfortable exhale that followed.
“Sounds hectic,” Farlan said. He hadn’t been looking at Levi’s way the entire time, too busy aiming for a headshot at the screen.
It was hectic. But it wasn’t shit to Levi for that reason.
“I guess that’s one good thing about getting into community college.”
“Yeah, it does sound hectic.” Levi had been secretive about applying. He let the subtle fact that he had applied to similar colleges to Hange simmer in the room, ebb at the guilt inside him. He wasn’t telling anyone about community college being a fall back. That was a secret he’d keep to his heart, only known by his mother, his uncle and Hange. Fortunately, Hange never brought it up. “That’s why I didn’t wanna bother her today.”
“She’s busy.”
“When you get into a really good college I guess...” The silence was heavy again. The elephant in the room plopped down right next to him and their conversation wasn’t making too much sense and as Levi quickly analyzed the shooting game in front of him, he understood why Farlan wouldn’t have the headspace for some slight drama.
So Levi sat quietly, politely ignoring the tension, instead focusing on bending forward while cross legged, letting his back stretch behind him. Stretching his aching muscles, undoing knots, allowed some lightness to settle, taking the space of whatever heaviness there had been a second ago.
The game ended soon after with a taut swear from Farlan. Then a question Levi hadn’t been ready for. “Are you gonna tell her?”
Levi almost spat out his response. “Tell her what?”
Farlan put the controller down. “It’s your last chance right? Once she leaves for the city, she’ll find new people… And she’s not ugly you know. A lot of people--- men and women---will go after her. ”
She was frumpy, plain especially right after a shower. Worry and stress would line her face right after a long night. Levi had to admit though that she was far from ugly. Her notably bright personality, her intelligence that ‘came once every decade’ according to the many conversations he had heard among teachers were painful reminders, the impending goodbye was just turning out to be more and more terrifying.
“I know that.” Levi couldn’t bring himself to say anymore, not about his feelings, not about the marriage pact. Articulating what he was thinking would only serve to make it more real.
“How you feel about her leaving?”
“Well, of course I’m sad about it, she’s my best friend.”
“Yeah, but don’t you wanna lock it… If you know what I mean,” Farlan said slowly, as if he were talking to someone either oblivious or someone below the age of five.
Levi was neither five nor oblivious. Still, obliviousness was a convenient trait. “Lock what?”
Farlan let out a mix between a sigh and a laugh. “Never mind.” He clicked ‘start a new game.’ The loading screen flashed in front of him and Farlan used as an opening to turn back. “It’s up to you but--- I know she means a lot to you and I just think if she means that much to you… you should take the risk.”
Levi decided on it a few minutes later but he saw no convenient opportunity to tell Farlan, the latter having been engrossed in a more challenging campaign since a while ago. So any attempt to articulate his decision died there.
And he had two weeks to come up with a final plan.
***
Less than 24 hours ago, Levi was determined to tell Hange. His confidence was a littles stronger than usual. He was no writer but he had a script. He was no actor but he had allowed himself time in front of the mirror to balance his tones, to time his rests.
It was stupid. He had known Hange for years but circumstances, and maybe Levi’s own fastidious personality, had him realizing confessions were a nuanced thing. Emphasizing the wrong words could have Hange getting the wrong message.
And when he didn’t even know whether he wanted her to leave or stay, he wasn’t even sure what the right message was.
He had dedicated at least three hours to the whole preparation process when a speed bump appeared.
In the form of a shopping trip with his mother and the young daughter of the family friend. Isabel was only a few years younger, but her innocence, her blind optimism at the state of the world and the fate of relationships was closer to that of a five year old.
Having spent the past few hours dealing with his own skeletons, Levi was a little envious, particularly when she had walked ahead “ooh”-ing and “aah”ing at everyday things. The streets have always been cobblestoned. Although the trinkets at the front of the shops, although the food sold at the streetcars varied by season, the big picture always seemed the same to Levi.
If he walked until the end of the main street, he would find the town church. If he walked along the alleys, he would find a few pubs that opened too late in the day and too early in the evening. And if he kept walking until the end of the alleys, he would find greens. And lots and lots of mountains.
It is a dingy little town. Those were Hange’s words. But it’s our dingy little town. He hadn’t been to the center of town in so long and when all he could think about was Hange, he was noticing the smallest things. Everything Hange hated about the town.
“Levi, let’s check out the pet shop!”
Kuchel had been busy looking at the spices displayed at the front of one of the shops and Isabel was starting to get a little restless.
“I’ll take her,” Levi said.
Kuchel nodded, still occupied with spices. “Sure I’ll meet you there.”
It was a weekday, the beginning of summer yet the heat was enough to have Levi a little uncomfortable in a shirt with sleeves past his elbows. It was the crowd he had to navigate through definitely. Humans were warm creatures and the crowds trapped the warmth, the sun above only contributed its share of warmth.
Warmth and warmth mixed together became unbearably hot and under it all, Levi was uncomfortable, he was finding a distraction. And he was still thinking of Hange.
“Look, it’s a canary.” Isabel was supposed to have been a distraction. When Levi looked back to stare at it, he felt it, Hange was still a nagging thought in the back of his mind. And inadvertently, he was projecting her into anything remotely Hange.
“Can we buy it, Levi?”
His mind wasn’t in the conversation. He was focused just a little too much on the yellow bird, clamoring the sides of the cage, only grasping by the thinner metal bars. “You wanna buy the canary?” Levi asked.
“I read in a book. Canaries are high energy birds and they can’t be kept inside the cage. They said it’s not healthy."
"Not healthy?"
"I wanna set it free.”
Isabel was tugging at him but Levi was frozen in place. He had pulled out from the crowds and he was in a better position definitely. One discomfort had been replaced with another though.
The crowds came and left, soon replaced by thoughts of Hange once again. That had Levi stiffening up.
“Levi, let’s check the store!”
The poor poor canary.
“I wanna buy the canary!”
Kuchel wouldn’t allow it. Isabel’s parents wouldn’t allow it. Did they even have the money for it? They barely even made ends meet.
Levi was certain never before had he even given caged animals more than one glance but the canary had taken up more space in his mind, more than he was willing to have given from the start.
He stared longer. He stared deeper into those eyes. Then he figured it out, there was one bright eyed, high energy bird much closer to him. Before the thoughts could form into something else, Levi attempted to look away, surveying his surroundings instead.
The bright sweltering sun only served to magnify the black, rotting among the corners in the alleys and the houses. If he focused on the outdated grills and the peeling paint, he noticed it.. Hange was right, the small town was dingy.
When he looked beyond it, squinting just a little bit, he saw more. Just past the buildings and the alleys though were trees, greens, there were mountains. The next town was a good long train ride away. The next city was a much longer train ride away. The raw sensation of rejection letter on hand only served to build the bars for him.
The small town was a dingy cage. And two weeks later, he saw it in her. The bright yellow. The talons that clambered up, foraging for some opening in the cage.
And he saw it clearly completely at the gate to immigration, just a few minutes after check in.
Hange wasn’t crying. Hange didn’t curl her lips down into a grimace. In fact, everything was the other way around. It was as if she wasn’t leaving him and he wasn’t leaving her.
Levi spoke up. “Send a message before you take off.”
“Will do,” Hange replied.
“And when you arrive there,” Levi added.
“You know I will,” Hange said calmly. A big smile played at her lips. “You’ll visit right?”
“I’ll save up for it.” Levi had done the calculations. One year of saving, one year of cutting down on any luxuries and he could afford the plane ticket at least.
The train ticket. Then the plane ticket. The whole journey there. The weight of the effort seemed surreal and it would only become a reality when he lets her go, through the immigration doors.
Only passengers beyond this point. Levi stared at the sign for a little longer. Once Hange crossed that, the next time he would see her would be after he paid the ridiculous ticket prices, put in the long painstaking hours on the plane
“Hey, I’ll make sure to call, maybe every day, maybe once a week. Depending on how busy we both get,” Hange said gently.
Levi wondered what face he was making to receive such comforts. Hange’s voice wasn’t gentle by nature. She had only summoned it herself through careful thought, through some sustained effort for sure.
And he became more aware of the prickle at the back of his eyes and the inclination to just stand there for as long as he could. Maybe in another world that would have been enough to freeze time.
Then, suddenly he felt guilty for even hoping for some power over time. Hange had been calm, maybe wistful but she was also excited. “I might miss my flight if we stay here any longer.” Her tone was lighter than a while ago. She could have been making a joke.
Levi at least tried to adopt the same demeanor. HIs mind though had been elsewhere. Maybe he had managed a smile, a nod.
Hange turned her back slowly. With one wave of her hand, she went between the gates. She was still waving, past on the other side of the glass. She wasn’t looking at him anymore though.
Acceptance dawned on him more quickly than he expected. Maybe because Hange wasn’t just Hange anymore. Seeing her had been some catalyst to a quick recall.
To the canary long ago, stuck in the cage. The canary who had climbed to the top, in pursuit of some way out of that dingy metal cage.
Before Hange turned the corner towards the gates, she had looked at him one more time. Levi ran towards the glass wall, phone in hand. He held it in front of him and mouthed one word. “Text.”
Hange put one hand on the glass and nodded. She said something else, something he couldn’t tell. But it had fogged the glass just in front of them.
Dingy metal cage. Glass barriers. Two different materials but they did the same thing. They separated people. They kept some in. They kept others out.
Then Levi thought back to the cage, back to the canary and he thought back to the lock that blended too well to the cage. The canary would never have learned to open it alone.
Hange's own education. Her own wit had gotten her out of the cage.
And who was he to stop her? Hange had found the key. She had unlocked it herself.
“I love you. I wish you’d stay.” Would he have been able to call her back in with just one a few words? He said it as a whisper, enough to fog his side of the glass and the haze blended with hers.
By the time he said it the second time, then the third time, enough to cover Hange’s own fog, she had turned back already. She turned the corner, then towards the gate number.
Gate 23. Levi had been fixated enough to memorize the flight number and the gate number.
He stared for a few seconds longer, watching as the fog on the other side disappeared into nothing, leaving scratches and almost invisible specks of dust. For a second longer, he wondered if that had been anything Hange left behind.
He watched his own fog waste into nothing. He thought back to the dingy small town, then back to the dingy cage. Hange was just one canary who flew off.
And Levi was the one left behind in the cage. So he kept the lock in place. He held onto the key. Just in case, she decided to come back.

Okay ngl I usually don’t post hc’s or updates or ideas about my fics bc I usually wanna keep them “as a surprise” for when I do publish it (if I ever even do lol) or I’ve had this mindset that just talking about writing prevents me or takes time from actually writing. Or that even if I do talk about my feelings/ideas about smth, that no one will really care. Which is why I kinda save it for dm’s with friends/when the topic actually comes up. And even then, I don’t wanna overwhelm them with all my thoughts/ideas so I kind of hold back on some things
But recently I came across this Twitter thread that reminded me that it is perfectly fine to blabber on about the things I like if I want to. And even if no one cares, it’s MY freaking blog. I write for fun and for free and for ME. So I should stop trying to hide behind self deprecation as “humility” or keep my ideas bottled up just to save them as “surprises” when I actually just wanna talk about them!!!!!
I’m gonna start tagging these as #fic trivia so if you don’t care to see my babbling, or you prefer just my surprise fic emails outta nowhere, then feel free to hide that tag from your dash. But I am gonna try to start being more open about what I wanna talk about when I wanna talk about it, regardless of the feedback/interaction (or lack thereof) that I get
So without further ado, some hc’s from my tattoo artist!bakugou fic:
Among his friends, Bakugou has tatted:
Jirou (first practice canvas)
Kirishima (upper arms and chest, maybe legs)
Uraraka (upper arms)
Kaminari (random scattered pieces for whenever he’s feeling spontaneous and can handle the pain)
Sero (one sleeve, chest, legs)
Deku (he’s a good boy but he wanted one by his friend so he got one on his hip just to support kacchan/hide it from his mom)
Ashido (random pieces all over, not only by Bakugou bc she has more tattoo artist friends who practice on her, so she’s pretty filled up)
Inasa (whole sleeves and chest pieces)
Camie (one thing on her back maybe)
Tokoyami (random pieces on his upper arms)
Sato (whole sleeves)
Shoji (whole sleeves and random stuff all over)
Tetsutetsu (whole sleeves and chest pieces)
Among clients, Bakugou has tattooed:
Nejire (obviously) — a singer in this au
Shindou (chest and upper arms)
Nakagame (one thing in her arm)
Gang orca (whole sleeves)
Death arms (chest pieces, one thing on legs)
Kendou (one on her arm, one on her side)

Vlad King (one upper arm/chest piece)
Burnin’ (tat on her back)
Before starting Dynamight Studios, he was an apprentice for Best Jeanist for several years. His mentor was a lot more artsy than he was, but Bakugou respects legends in their own right. Plus it gave him a chance to experiment with things to find out that he does, in fact, only like to do what he wants to do 😪
But Jeanist gave him a ton of experience and brought him along to plenty of conventions, domestic and international, so his time as an apprentice is irreplaceable. They still talk and Bakugou visits every once in a while.

Reader has tattooed:
Yaomomo
Nejire
Mount lady
Intelli Saiko & friends (from provisional license exam arc)
Kodai & Komori (came in together)
Probably way more people in her base area
Reader apprenticed with Hawks, which honestly gave her a bit of a headache. He’s a super talented tattoo artist but his work style is kind of overwhelming. She learned a lot from him, that’s for sure, but the way he would just make her crank out dozens of sketches a day was not sustainable for her. It did force her to think out of the box a lot though, which is what eventually birthed her new personal style
She now works at a relatively popular tattoo shop she started with another tattoo artist friend, but she takes jobs from a lot of people and places. Sometimes, she even gets a client referred to by her old mentor, whom she visits every so often with food.

About Red Riot Bar:
It’s a pretty spacious place, with mostly low rise coffee tables and stools so that you don’t feel like you’re being obstructed when you talk to others by tall furniture. If there are tall tables, they’re off to the side/the bar itself
There are arcade games set up one side of the bar, like pinball, darts, Pac-Man, etc. Opposite the pool table. and the walls are decorated with all of kirishima’s favorite art, bands, and inspirations (esp crimson riot, his favorite tv show character. He’s still waiting for the day that the actor shows up to his bar so he can put a framed photo on the walls)
It’s a chill place, where the music is good but not too loud and everyone can feel at ease. It’s on a street that’s pretty popular and busy with restaurants and other izakayas, so he’s got competition. But the ones who do come in and stick around are exactly the type of clientele he prefers for his bar
Was talking to @tonystonem about this but if you happened to stop by his bar a few times casually after work or smth, he would probably remember you since he’s pretty friendly with all his customers and likes to get to know people
And bouncing off of that, if you happen to catch his eye, then maybe he’d crank up the flirting a bit. Or get a little nosy when you bring a guy friend/acquaintance along with you one day
-
Obviously, jirou and yaomomo are in a band together, along with some other friends. (Although yaomomo still has a part time day job working for her family’s business) They play for a lot of different live music places and sometimes get booked for touring artists or events.
Their first big gig was given to them by popular radio host and producer present mic, at a music festival. They’re working with him occasionally on an EP, but they’re putting a lot of care into the project so it’s taking a bit longer than expected. But it’s gonna be so good and kirishima is definitely gonna stream it nonstop in his bar when it comes out

Kaminari knows everyone and everything in the city lmao. Everyone wonders if he actually has a job bc he’s always just out socializing and partying and having a good time. He does have a job tho! He’s like a recruiter for his company, so he has to go out and find new clients or workers all the time but that usually involves inviting them out for a casual hangout first to throw his pitches. It’s not always successful but he makes a lot of friends out of it. More than he can handle/remember sometimes lol
#fic trivia#lmao might have to go back and search for a few old posts where i answered some asks about my other fic hc's but this is a start#i feel the need to say things out loud more despite how i fear the lack of feedback#bc i gotta remember i don't write in the first place for feedback???#and if no one gives a crap either way then i might as well spit it out instead of letting it just fester in my brain and die in my notes#don't get me wrong i absolutely adore feedback but since i don't get much of it nowadays (compared to before) then i get doubtful about#how good it actually is sometimes. like /i/ think it's good but if other people don't then maybe i should re evaluate why that is#or maybe it's bc i'm writing in a style/for characters that i wasn't usually known for and those who used to read for those things are#no longer interested in reading my new stuff#which i get but still. makes me wonder if i'm really evolving sometimes or not#damn hokshi really be out here just vomiting her insecurities into the tags without a stopper huh?#but whatever. again gotta reiterate that i shouldn't be sorry for being honest or saying what i wanna say

The Future | A3! | "Once More, With Feeling!" Fanzine
"Once More, With Feeling!" is an A3! fanzine that focuses on events that occur in Act 1 of the main story of the game and which revolves around the theme of "growth".
The zine has over 40 contributors and is packed to the brim with amazing art and stories, so if you want to check it out, the free version of the zine can still be downloaded here!
This was technically published months ago for the "Once More, With Feeling!" fanzine, but I didn't have a chance to upload it to Tumblr until now! Oops!
I wanted to make sure I posted this today in commemoration of the "A Two-Faced Teacher" event coming out on the EN server, since this event was one of the inspirations for my fic! This story does take place pre-Act 2/in the Act 1 continuum, though there are nods to the "A Two-Faced Teacher" event, which you'll catch if you had read the event story.
THE FUTURE
THEME: Growth
CHARACTERS: Banri Settsu, Juza Hyodo, Taichi Nanao, Sakuya Sakuma
My fanfic masterpost: Here
AO3: Link in my Blog Menu
“Hey, Settsu—so have you thought more about your career plan?”
Banri’s eyebrow twitched as Azumi—Hanasaki High’s guidance counsellor—spoke to him through the door. He couldn’t believe this was seriously happening right now.
“You know, with your grades, it would be a shame if you didn’t go to university. The sky’s the limit for you. It’s always harder to get back into the swing of things if you take a year off,” Azumi rambled.
Banri groaned and covered his face with his hands in exasperation. This situation could not be more awkward. At his wit’s end, the brown-haired boy lifted a leg and kicked the stall door in front of him.
“Look, Teach—I’m tryin’ to take a shit!! Can we talk ‘bout this later?!”
“Language, Settsu,” Azumi chided, not missing a beat. “Anyway, you ran away the last time I tried talking to you, so what else was I supposed to do?”
“I dunno—not stalk me?! Ugh, whatever! I’ll hand it in—just freakin’ get out already!!”
“All right, all right. You’d better keep your word, though, Settsu!”
Banri flushed the toilet and exited the stall. Maybe that memory came back to him just now because it was the same stall he had used that time. Or maybe it was because of the conversation that he’d had with Yuki at the Night Walk the other day—about Yuki’s goals for the future and Banri’s lack thereof.
The future, huh?
For as long as Banri could remember, he’d never cared about the future. What was the point of imagining what was to come when he could barely bother with the present—the boring, super ultra easy present? Even when he had set goals for himself, he always accomplished them effortlessly, no matter how high the bar. Get an A+ on that exam? He aced it with a perfect score. Win that award? The gap between him and the runner-up was miles apart. Master that new skill he’d never tried before in his life? He did it with his eyes closed.
Each success left him hollow. Where was the sense of satisfaction when everything always went according to plan? So, he stopped planning. Stopped expecting. Instead, he just went with the flow and chased after every cheap thrill he could find, because there was no future he could even envision striving for.
But, things were different now—the present was anything but boring. Whether it was taking on a crazy gaming challenge with Itaru, or trying a new curry dish for dinner (how could so many types of curry even exist, anyway?), or pushing his body to the limit during Autumn Troupe practice, every day with the Mankai Company was new and exciting.
Then, there was the stage. Every time he stepped foot under the spotlight, his heart pounded. There was no better adrenaline rush than performing in front of a live audience. The spectators might not laugh at a joke, and they’d have to throw in an adlib; someone could flub a line, and they’d have to find a way to save the scene; even a slightly different intonation or body movement could push the play in a totally new direction. Banri revelled in that feeling of having all the tools in his hands while knowing that a wrench could be thrown in at any moment—sometimes literally.
Before he knew it, he had fallen in love with theatre and being a part of Mankai Company. He had every intention to keep acting and he knew that the logical next step was to study performing arts, especially since he could bring his newfound skills back to benefit the troupe. Yet, despite his feelings, he still found himself hesitating. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but he just couldn’t bring himself to commit.
Wiping his hands dry on his handkerchief, Banri made his way over to his shoe locker, grabbing his outdoor shoes and school bag before leisurely making his way home. Still mulling over his thoughts, he eventually turned onto Veludo Way and immediately spotted two familiar figures bowing to a small audience.
“Thank you! Thank you very much!” Taichi exclaimed, waving his hands enthusiastically.
“Come check out Mankai Company—we’ll have a new show on soon,” Juza added as he straightened from his bow.
“What are you two doing?” Banri asked as he walked up to them through the dispersing crowd.
“Banny!” Taichi greeted as he looked up from counting the yen in his pencil case turned tip box. “We were trying to pick up some tips because we were short a few hundred yen!”
“A few hundred yen for what?” the taller boy asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Gettin’ some egg tarts,” Juza responded, taking the yen from Taichi and jabbing his thumb over his shoulder at a small storefront with the flaky treats on display.
“Sweets? Figures.”
“They’re for Tsumugi!” Taichi piped up. “He’s been helping Juza study for his entrance exam even though he registered last minute! So the second Juza saw those egg tarts, he wanted to pick some up as a thank you gift!”
“Entrance exam?” Banri asked incredulously. He couldn’t possibly mean the university entrance exam?
“I’m applyin’ for university theatre programs,” Juza responded, meeting Banri’s gaze defiantly.
“Seriously? You’re studying to get into university? Don’t make me laugh! You sure you even have the brains for that?”
“Shut up, Settsu,” Juza growled, shooting him a glare. “I’m serious ‘bout acting. It’s what I wanna do. You might be better at acting than me right now, but I’m gonna study hard and learn lots. Then, I’m gonna leave you in my dust.” Without another word, Juza turned around and trotted over to the pastry shop.
Banri was thunderstruck. Even Juza, of all people, had set their eyes on the future. He couldn’t believe it. Wasn’t he better than Juza in every way? If a sugar-addicted gorilla could do it—why couldn’t he ? What was stopping him from confidently declaring his goals for the future? Why did he tell Yuki he was still thinking about it?
Was it because he was… scared? After all, it had been so long since he’d allowed himself to look forward, to plan for the future—so was he scared of being disappointed again? Afraid of losing that sense of excitement for something he finally felt passionate about? The realization shook him.
“We’re home!” the three boys hollered as they stepped through the dorm entrance.
“Welcome home!” Sakuya greeted, popping out of the lounge upon hearing the door open. The other boy must have just gotten home as well, as he still wore his school uniform. Seeing Sakuya’s blazer—the same as his—Banri suddenly realized that the other boy was graduating this year as well. The Spring Troupe leader was so small and innocent that Banri sometimes forgot that they were in the same grade.
“Hey, Sakuya—can I ask you somethin’?” Banri said as Juza and Taichi shuffled past them to head to their rooms.
“Sure, what is it?” Sakuya asked, cocking his head to one side.
“What are you plannin’ to do after graduation?”
“Ummm...” Sakuya’s eyes flickered away from Banri’s for a moment as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I’ll be joining the workforce.”
“Seriously? I woulda thought you’d go to university to study performing arts or somethin’.”
“Well, if I’m being honest, I thought about going to university for a theatre program—like the one that Tsumugi and Tasuku went to—but tuition would be kind of tough right now,” Sakuya replied with a sheepish smile. “My relatives have already paid to put me through a top-tier private high school, so I can’t ask them to help me out any more than they already have.”
“Ah. Right… My bad.” Banri wanted to kick himself—how could he forget that Sakuya was an orphan. He hadn’t even thought about tuition, since he knew his parents would cover it without any questions.
“Oh no, don’t feel sorry! I mean—it’s not like it’s a bad thing!” Sakuya continued. “Izumi, Tsumugi, and Tasuku already told me that they’d help me find work with other troupes on Veludo Way. So, I’ll be getting lots of hands-on experience instead. And I know that Hisoka and Misumi have found interesting part-time jobs that help with their acting as well! So, even if I won’t have formal training, I’m confident that I’ll find other ways to improve my acting!”
“Huh. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you’ve got it all figured out,” Banri murmured. He was always impressed by the other leader’s can-do attitude.
“Well, I don’t know about that! I just love acting and I never want to stop—so I’m doing what I can with what I’ve got!” Sakuya responded with a bright smile. “But, I’m sure you’ll get into whichever theatre program you want and then you can show me what you learn—we can even trade tips! Oh, actually, which university did you apply for? Veludo Arts? Or maybe Yosei?”
“Huh? How’d you know that I would be applyin’ for a theatre program?” Banri asked, astonished at the other boy’s assumption.
Sakuya’s laugh tinkled out like bells. “Well, it’s so obvious—you love acting too, after all! And you’re definitely smart enough to get into any university you want!”
For the second time that day, Banri was rendered speechless.
“Sakuya! Could you lend me a hand with this?” Omi called from the kitchen.
“Oh! Be right there!” Sakuya shouted back into the lounge. “Sorry—I’ll talk to you later, Banri!”
“Later,” Banri replied dazedly as Sakuya retreated into the other room.
As soon as the other boy disappeared, a frown crossed Banri’s face. It had been a while since he’d felt so lame. Sakuya was so passionate and devoted to theatre, but he couldn’t even pursue his ideal path. Instead, he had to find another way to reach his goal, to fight to continue chasing his dream. Even Juza, who had rocks for brains, was cracking his head open to do something he was terrible at in order to walk forward towards the future.
And here he was—with all the smarts and the privilege to do exactly what they both wanted—with his feet frozen to the ground.
What the hell am I hesitatin’ for, dammit?! Screw this overthinkin’ bullshit! I know what I want—I want to act.
With the resolve to finally rip his feet free and charge forward, Banri pulled his phone out of his pocket and opened his LIME app. Scrolling down until he found Kazunari’s contact, he began typing out a message.
“Nice coffee they have here, huh?”
Banri couldn’t believe that this old man followed him all the way to the cafe.
“Is that even coffee anymore?” Banri retorted, wrinkling his nose in disgust as he watched Azumi pour in a second container of milk into his drink. It might as well be coffee-flavoured milk at this point.
“My stomach isn’t as strong as it used to be. If I drink coffee straight, it gives me the runs,” Azumi replied with a chuckle.
“Ugh! Nasty! Keep that to yourself, old man!”
“By the way, it’s been a week since you told me you’d hand in your career plan, but I still don’t have it.”
“Look, there just isn’t anythin’ I wanna do,” the boy answered with a sigh.
“Well, even more reason for you to consider higher education, then,” Azumi stated, sipping his abomination of a drink with a contented sigh. “For someone who doesn’t know what they want, I think university will help broaden your horizons.”
“I guess.”
“How about this? For now, I’ll just put down on your career plan that you’re pursuing post-secondary education and sign you up for the standard entrance exam,” Azumi suggested. “In the meantime, think things over. Once you figure out what you really want to do, come find me.”
“Fine. But, I’m warnin’ ya, Teach—don’t get your hopes up.”
Taking a deep breath, Banri knocked on the door to the faculty office. A moment later, one of the younger teachers opened the door.
“Is Mr. Azumi here?” Banri asked, trying to keep his voice as casual as possible.
“Mr. Azumi—Settsu’s here to see you,” the young teacher called over his shoulder before stepping away from the door.
“Ehhhh?! Settsu is here to see me?!” Azumi yelled exaggeratedly from his desk in the corner.
Banri couldn’t help clicking his tongue. For a second, he considered turning around and leaving, but the piece of paper in his hand burned against his fingers.
“How can I help you, Settsu?” Azumi asked, now standing in front of Banri with an obnoxious grin on his face.
“Here.” Banri held out the piece of paper to him, purposely looking at a spot behind Azumi’s head. He didn’t want to see whatever smug smirk the teacher would make once he saw what was on the page.
“Is this what I think it is?” Azumi gasped in surprise, his eyes quickly skimming the document.
“It’s not too late, right? To change my mind?” Banri replied, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
“Hmm… the registration period might be over... but, I know a guy—I can twist his arm into letting me squeeze in your registration,” Azumi replied. “Wait... you’ve only got your first-choice university down. Do you have a back-up?”
“Tch—who do you think I am?” Banri scoffed, rolling his eyes. There was no way he wouldn't get into his top choice. After all, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do.
This was actually my first time writing Banri, so I'm hoping I was able to capture his character (and attitude!!) properly! Initially, while reading Act 1, I was very annoyed with Banri and wanted to give him a good smack. However, as the story progressed (especially in Act 2) and I watched him grow as a character, I ended up adopting him into my circle of A3! children. I can honestly say that he has one of my favourite stories of personal growth throughout the main storyline, and this fic was inspired by one of my favourite parts of his backstory: that he ended up genuinely pursuing acting despite how he started off at Mankai Company. The little hints that were dropped about how he made this decision really inspired me to come up with my own take on how he got to this decision!
Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! Feel free to leave a comment if you have any thoughts and reblogs are always appreciated!

Steve is an artist who does commercial work and draws comics. He spends his weekends teaching a drawing class for free at a local cafe. He doesn't recognize the guy who snuck into his class in a suit that looks like it costs more than his month's rent but he looks stressed and like he's running from someone. Falling in Love at the All Day Cafe by betheflame for BladeoftheNebula (MCU, 3.9k words)
One of the things about the particular block they lived on was that at the corner was, quite possibly, the world’s best bakery. It was Zagat rated and everything, so it wasn’t just Tony that felt that way. People flew in from all over the world to eat at All Day Cafe - Tony had bumped into Gwenyth Paltrow a few months ago and thought it was his best friend, Pepper, and that was awkward - and their pastries were no joke.
Run by Olympic Gold Medalist Steve Rogers, the cafe specialized in classic French pastries with American twists - like a pain au chocolat that also came encrusted in pistachios - and routinely sold out of their daily specials within two hours of opening. Peter, in particular, loved their peanut butter cookies that the baker swore was nothing special but Tony was wondering if they’d laced it with kiddie cocaine or something.

OUT OF MY HEAD AND INTO MY HEART
It’s been AGES since I last posted.... but I’m “back” (if anyone cares hehe) with a rather long fic that will be seperated in at least four parts. It’s a college AU (first time doing an AU feel free to give me some advices ;)). It’s been so long since I posted so I’m a bit nervous, so if you like it, please tell me (And the first part is really not the most captivating I’ll try and post the second part tomorrow or in the week)
And as always, sorry for my grammar and stuff (still not from an english speaking country)
I hope you enjoy:
They had been, enemies, and now they were friends. After three years Zoya still couldn’t believe that she had ended up in the same university as Genya and her boyfriend David. Well ex-boyfriend as it seemed.
Genya was crying on her shoulder and mumbling about the break-up. Zoya was nodding and patting her head not knowing what else to do. Zoya had only ever had one boyfriend, in senior year of high school and only for a few months… and it had ended terribly. So no, Zoya didn’t know how to comfort her friend.
Zoya had never thought that the two would ever break up. They had started going out in freshman year of high school, when her and Genya were at odds to say the least. But now apparently he had broke up with her, and through the tears, Zoya could not understand why.
Genya had been crying for what felt like hours. And Zoya wouldn’t have minded had it not be her one night off, the one night with no exams to cram, no work, no boy, no parties, just Zoya a glass of cheap wine and an awful tv show.
She had gotten the studio to have some alone time, to be able to go through her last year of school with an easy mind. But the semester had barely started that Zoya already needed to relinquish half of her bed for her friend. Because of course, Genya lived with David a few streets away.
Genya stopped crying for a few second to take a breath and Zoya jumped on the occasion. She took her friend’s face in her hand and made her stare into her eyes. « What happened ? What did he do. Do I need to put on a coat and beat him up? Because I will, and you know it! » After a few seconds of silence and a hiccup, Genya shook her head and kissed Zoya on the cheek. « No…but can I crash here tonight » Zoya sighed « I wouldn’t have it any other way ». And so for the rest of the night they sat on Zoya’s couch drinking cheap wine and watching some terrible telenovela all the while mocking Zoya’s love-life.
The next morning they both went to class a little tired and a little hungover. Except that Genya decided to ditch the morning class to go back to her apartment because David would be out. Genya was an art history major, and Zoya a History major. She went to class as normal. She had four hours of class that day, even with little sleep it would be manageable.
In all of her four classes she had to pick a subject for a presentation. And it was when it happened. Four times in a row, some boy picked the subject she wanted first. All four of them. Needless to say she was on edge. After her last class she decided to go to him and to ask politely if he would like to switch.
She had only seen his back during class, blond hair, black t-shirt. She’d also heard his last name a couple of times, well, four times to be exact. So she ran after him in the hallway. « Lansov? » She said. He turned around. And she stopped running. Well, that, she had’t expected. He was…handsome, very handsome, clean sharp jaw, and hazel eyes. Zoya almost forgot why she had called on him. She cleared her throat but he spoke first.
« Lantsov » he said trying to hide the fact that he was assessing her. « What? » She asked. He shook his head and repeated « Lantsov, with a T » she frowned « Yeah I know letters, whatever…So » she said « Or you could just go for Nikolai…that’s my name » he continued « yeah…figured, well, LanTTTsov, I had a question, a ….favor to ask of you. Could.. » and her phone cut her off, a text from Genya : Meet me for lunch at DS’s. Zoya sighed, she already worked there she actually had a shift tonight, and now she was also going to eat there…fantastic. « Hum… I have plans for lunch sorry, but you can ask me another time » he said, the most mischievous grin plastered on his face. And she laughed. It was nervous, because it was laughing or punching. « Oh I am SO disappointed, maybe, to make it up to me you’d be willing to switch one of your presentations with me ? » She tried. And it was his turn to laugh. « Very funny, but I’ll take the raincheck on lunch. » he said and left her standing there.
Zoya was walking towards the little restaurant/bar, and she called Genya. « Did you went to class? At all? This morning? »She asked her friend. « No… I dint’t want to see David in the hallways. But enough about that, hurry up I invited an old friend of mine to eat with us. He’s been studying abroad so he doesn’t know anyone else here » she said very quickly, and Zoya stopped « He ? » She asked « Yes…why ? » Asked Genya and Zoya sighed « Are you trying to make David jealous ? » No answer. « Just hurry up » and she ended the call. Zoya picked up the pace and half walked half ran to the restaurant.

Ok, I may regret this.
I’ve noticed a sort of ... thing on tumblr (not so much offline, at least not with the people I hang with) where stuff is either Good or Problematic, with the implication that if something is Problematic but you still engage with it, you have to justify this engagement by invoking the concept of criticism. Like, you’re engaging with it “critically” so it’s ok.
Everything is problematic. Everything. There is nothing which, if you’re watching/reading critically, you can’t find something to bitch about. (Maybe extremely short short stories, maybe.)
If you consider absence of representation an issue, and you should, then there’s definitely no exceptions, because no work covers every marginalized group and every intersection it’s possible to cover.
This is ok, because the point of critically engaging with media isn’t to redeem your problematic faves. The point is to see and understand patterns in media as a whole. Patterns of how different genders are represented and different orientations and different cultures and races and what narratives support colonialism and what narratives support the police etc. it’s not, it never has been, about splitting works into categories of good and bad.
And part of that means: if there’s a thing you like, you don’t have to treat every episode or rewatch like a final exam. You can just watch it, and if you don’t catch everything you might be “critical” about that’s ok. It’s Ok to turn off the critical awareness sometimes, if that is in fact something you’re capable of doing.
Leisure is a biological and psychological necessity. People do in fact need to be able to engage in leisure activities without doing a bunch of extra emotional labor (which is what critical engagement is) some of the time.
So, if you don’t need to “engage critically” all of the time, what should you do?
Engage critically — some of the time. So that you can see general patterns of things like... police being presented in a positive vs negative light, police breaking the law being presented in a positive or negative light, patterns in what kind of person is shown as villainous, patterns in what kind of person is put in a comic relief role, narratives that could be used to justify wars of aggression, narratives that real life rapists could find plausible deniability in, etc etc. You don’t need to do this all of the time, and you shouldn’t only do this on works that someone else has pointed out to you as problematic. (This doesn’t just apply to TV shows etc by the way. Who’s shown in ads and how? Magazine covers? Is that bra being sold as “nude” as though there’s one universal skin color? How are male politicians talked about differently than female politicians? Which tumblr posts get more reblogs and which get fewer?)
If someone else doesn’t want to watch a thing, or talk about it with you, they don’t have to and you shouldn’t pressure them to, regardless of reason. Specifically? Don’t argue if someone cites a social justice reason, and don’t argue if they don’t (because often people would rather avoid conflict by saying “eh, it’s just not my thing” than to say “I’m not watching that because of how they treat a character I identify with.”) Just live and let live.
Be alert to nonverbal body language, if that’s a thing you’re capable of: sometimes people won’t say “I don’t want to talk about this” but will go quiet and look uncomfortable.
Do some of the many, many, many other everyday things that fight issues like white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism, etc. For instance: people often choose what to watch next by word of mouth, so you can talk to people offline or online about shows, books, webcomics etc that have good rep or are by marginalized creators. In particular, when you can send cash marginalized people’s way, do so.
Problems like white supremacy and patriarchy and transphobia and imperialism/colonialism are huge problems and when you live in a society, you’re inevitably going to be contributing to them in some way, knowingly or not. Aiming for personal purity in terms of never watching the wrong thing is...not an achievable goal. There’s always a million small things you can do to push the world a bit closer to justice, cutting out a problematic show from your life or resolving to only watch it critically and never just as something that speaks to your heart or comforts you, might occasionally be worth it, but most of the time there’s definitely something better you can do with your limited attention and intention.
One thing that you do notice if you engage critically some of the time, is things tend to be a mix of good in bad. One thing helps some trans people figure themselves out and is horrifically offensive to others. One thing is viscerally painful to watch for one person, and transmits a concept that’s positively life-saving to someone else. It’s all tangled up. (And I hope I got across the idea that not all good/bad aspects of things have to line up with a clearly understood oppression issue to be important.) Sometimes it makes sense to take a stand and go “this thing is just too problematic to be in my life” even as you also see the good in it. Or to advocate that other people do the same, which should be a higher bar. (Like. You won’t see me bitching about a few Dr Seuss books going out of print.) Other times... other times it’s not worth it. And it’s not like there’s a shortage of other things that do need to be done.
#political#discourse#purity culture#representation in media#counter-oppression#commenting on without reblogging#this is in response to a post about the rocky horror picture show#show#which was a fine post except it implied that it’s only ok to watch this movie#that is culturally so important to the queer community#and especially the trans community#if you’re engaging with it critically#is it problematic#sure of course#no shit#but also...problematic isn’t the same as utterly without vitally important positive qualities#long post
