Plaintiffs involved:
Authors Guild, David Baldacci, Mary Bly, Michael Connelly, Sylvia Day, Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, Elin Hilderbrand, Christina Baker Kline, Victor LaValle, Maya Shanbhag Lang, George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, Douglas Preston, Roxana Robinson, George Saunders, Scott Turow, Rachel Vail.
Complaint PDF at Internet Archive:
This is pretty close to the complaint against Google for scanning books & using snippets of them in searches - which was found a legit use.
...omg they are submitting answers from ChatGPT in their brief.
Dudes. DUUUUUUUDES. ChatGPT is not a person. It lies. It makes stuff up. It answers what it thinks is an appropriate response to the questions/prompts it's fed. It has zero awareness of legality. It's a bot. It is not a person; it's a fancy autocomplete generator with a lot of bells, whistles, smoke, and mirrors - but without actual cognition.
Asking ChatGPT about the copyright status of its sources is like asking the radio (not a DJ, just the radio itself) what the best station is, and spinning the dial until you hear the words "The best station is..."
You'll get an answer. It won't be evaluating multiple stations; it'll be a station ID ad. And if you ask ChatGPT about copyright and its source material, you will get an answer - but that answer won't be from the legal team attached to OpenAI. It won't even be from the coders at OpenAI.
You might as well put "The Truth About Copyright" in a youtube search and insist that the top video is legal evidence.
(There are a lot of issues with LLMs and chatbots and "AI" content. Copyright is not going to be the tool that fixes them.)
Good morning everybody

Cover Reveal Abandon Station by V. G. Harrison #ScienceFiction
Abandon Station
The Dyson Bridge Series,
Book One
V. G. Harrison
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Mocha Memoirs Press
Date of Publication: 1/31/2024
Number of pages: 84
Word Count: 22,000
Cover Artist: Maya Preisler
Tagline: Some planets just aren't worth saving.
Book Description:
An explosion rocks the Bridgeway Space Station. Mechanical Engineer Meridia Vail and her crew wake to find themselves on an alternate Earth where the technology is decades behind theirs, and so are the politics.
When she realizes their space station survived the interdimensional transport to an alternate space and time, she and her crew have only one mission. Get back to the Bridgeway so they can return to their real home.
Time is running out. If the metabolic changes that come with their teleported space station don’t kill them, the politics and secret agendas will.
Returning home makes sense, but that’s assuming there’s a home to return to. When Meridia learns the Bridgeway’s decaying orbit threatens to annihilate the planet, the Earthers will be more than happy to take their chances by destroying the greatest technological marvel of all time.
With members of Meridia’s international crew scattered across the planet and being detained, she must escape her “caretakers”, if she and her people ever have a chance at saving the one thing that might be able to save everyone.

Excerpt
The door opened.
I sat up and reached for the light.
“Don’t,” a familiar voice said. “They don’t know I’m here and I want to keep it that way.”
“Who doesn’t know you’re here?” I asked as panic swept across me. “Who are you and what do you want?”
“It’s me, Meridia. It’s Julio.” The older man appeared in the light reflecting from the TV. He looked every gray-hair of his age, but there was something about his eyes that weren’t right. His entire visage seemed worn and weathered beyond his fifty-nine years. He continued toward my bed with sweat dripping from his short, gray curls. “We have to get out of here. They want to use us.”
“Use us for what?” I asked.
“Don’t you hear them talking? They want to suck the information out of our brains. They’re going to attach us to machines that will take the wormhole knowledge out of us, then use that information to build bigger weapons. They won’t rest until they’ve brought the rest of the world to their knees.”
Oh boy. I jumped out of bed and hurried toward him to grab his arms. “Calm down, Julio. These people don’t want to hurt us. They want our knowledge, so it would hurt them to hurt us.”
“No,” he said, shaking his head. His gaze pleading. “You’re wrong. I’ve seen the machines. They do it round after round after round. You had your first tests today, didn’t you?”
“Julio it was just—”
He tore away from me. “Don’t you get it? The wormhole is ours. We created it. It belongs to us. Not them.”
This wasn’t the same Julio Ferrera I knew. A fusion physicist who was already on his way to greatness even before he joined the astronaut program, he was our Chief of Scientific Research and an accomplished Air Force Major. This guy in front of me was a lunatic who needed more care than they could ever hope to give him here. Seeing my friend and colleague like this wrenched my heart. I wanted to hug the fear out of him but knew it wouldn’t make any difference. He needed more help than I could give him.
“Relax, okay?” I started toward the small desk where there was a phone. “I’m going to call someone to help you. Maybe they can give you something to help you sleep.”
Julio tackled me to the floor. “You have to listen to me, damn it! Listen! They’ve hidden away more Americans than just us, so they can experiment on them more. Some of them are still up there on the Bridgeway just waiting at the beck and call. Leave them frozen until they’re needed.”
I squirmed away from him enough to grab the leg of a small side table. I smashed it across his upper back and head. Dazed, his grip loosened. I wiggled my legs out from underneath him, but he charged again, grabbing the back of my nightshirt. Threads tore as he dragged me down again. This time, he clawed his way on top of me and got his hands around my throat. He squeezed hard like he wanted to snap my neck in half, yelling for me to listen to him. I punched and clawed at his arms, fighting and kicking. Anything to free myself as a burning sensation heated up my lungs.
“You’re one of them!” He shouted, his eyes crazed. “They got to you. You can’t tell them anything—I won’t let you!”
My bedroom door slammed open. Several people ran into my bedroom and wrestled him off me. I rolled onto my side and grabbed my neck, struggling to suck air into my writhing lungs.
The orderlies threw Julio on my bed where a man wearing a pair of black slacks sedated him. Dr. Tommen knelt on the floor next to me, but I waved him away. I didn’t want anyone touching me. For all I knew, they did this to him.

a while ago I said I’d make edits of Road To El Dorado where Tulio/Miguel are Maya men instead of Spaniards, but also updated to be more accurate instead of Pan-mesoamerican. Some of the changes made for accuracy include:
The main source of inspiration in clothing and time period is the postclassic period (950-1539 AD) among the Yucatec Maya peoples, with fashion and textiles mostly inspired by Chichen-Itza
Tulio and Miguel are Maya warriors, though here they wear everyday attire, and Tulio wears red face paint, simlar to the ones here though not exactly
Chel is wearing a “horned” hairstyle common within the postclassic period, as well as a iipil/Huipil: the textile design on the collor comes from textiles found within Chichen Itza
sources of research are linked under the readmore. If you are Maya and you think something looks off, or if you have any thoughts, feel free to tell me, I am more than happy for feedback, but I did my best!
Textile Designs in the Sculptured Facades of Northern Maya Architecture by Jeff Karl Kowalski and Virginia E. Miller (which is about the history of Yucatec Maya textiles, specifically as present in architectural and artistic renditions, such as bas reliefs)
On the Edge of the Sea, Mural Painting at Tunkah-Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico by Arthur G. Miller (more about murals depicting Yucatec Maya fashion)
The Dresden Codex, New Approaches to Understanding an Ancient Maya Manuscript by Gabrielle Vail and Anthony Aveni. (Research-based on manuscripts and the codex of Maya from Chichen Itza, around the 13th or 14th century, again, postclassic period)
#dreamworks#animation#road to el dorado#ugh there was another source I had that I THINK mentioned the specific style of the facepaint I used#but I've been working on this for literal months so I've lost a few things that I otherwise didn't bookmark or forgot#I downloaded a SHITTON of academic stuff for this but I can't remember if I used them all but I definitely used the above ones#I tried my best at research nevertheless#justin's edits

I've seen people making Omega Mart employees OCs so I wanted to make one too of course!
Meet Maya Olivarez, a prime example of what happens to employees who accidentally consumed store products while still on the premises. It was just supposed to be a temporary job for the summer but it has now trapped Maya between realities for god knows how long, though last she remembers it had been October in 1995. She's technically still employed by the company and getting paid so really all she can do is continue working.
As it stands existing between realities does shit to you body and mind, some not as bad as most. For starters, her eyes have mutated to now be able to see beyond the vail of reality as well as the spectrum of color and radiation that most humans can not see. This has promoted her to inspection up crew that check for defective products, like the lemon creatures (who seem to like her for some reason). Since her physical form is only semi-corporal she can now also help out with messes/spills as she can not be harmed by them.
Despite the circumstances Maya is actually pretty chill about the whole thing. She doesn't need to eat or sleep so it gives her plenty of free time to explore the dimensional riffs hidden through out the store. Plus, she doesn't have to pay off her Student Loans anymore since outside the store she is either presumed dead and/or missing.

Ship asks! absolute favorite ship >:3C, first ship and the fandom it's from, and for funsies, what's your favorite headcanon about Jasper/ Mc ;) ?
:D Thank youuuu~!
what is your absolute favorite ship?
Picking a favorite is honestly impossible - I love SO MANY SHIPS and like. All of them have something that made me go ‘oooh, shiny’ the first time, and how do you pick a BEST shiny thing?? D: (Honorable mention to Razaya, though, because CN murdered the show and I will NEVER GET RESOLUTION AND I’M STILL MAD ABOUT IT.) I actually need an OTP list where I put them into gauntlets to fight it out to find an answer to this. I may do that. Time to start listing…
what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from?
First ship is so hard. I have the retentive memory of a GOLDFISH and I have to try to remember what baby me was into. I’m gonna go with either Jareth and Sarah from Labyrinth, because bb me was definitely proto-shipping that, or Goliath and Elisa from Gargoyles. I am and have always been DEEPLY PREDICTABLE. Also, hey, I think this is from 1999 so it’s a strong contender - in spite of never actually finishing the game, I got INCREDIBLY invested in Maya/Tatsuya from Persona 2: EP (mostly because there was almost immediately a lot of heavy hinting that they had Tragic Backstory and I am a SUCKER). I’m pretty sure the first pairing I ever shared fic for was Sora/Riku from Kingdom Hearts, which might also count?
favorite headcanon about Jasper/MC
Jasper falls like, EMBARRASSINGLY fast and everyone on Vail Isle wants to give him shit for it. There’s the hand thing in W2 suggesting that he is probably not always aware when he’s being Obvious, Yvette is definitely hinting about it in W3, and Kade is 110% the type to laugh at him forever. I live for angsty unspoken pining but it’s somehow even better when everyone else in the story is like ‘this is not an operatic tragedy this is H I L A R I O U S.’

Should you travel this summer to Mexico amid safety, algae and political concerns?
CLOSE
An invasion of a thick and stinky seaweed, Sargassum, is covering the beaches of the Caribbean paradise of Mexico’s Tulum. Newslook
The travel and tourism industry is a major economic driver for the Mexican economy, with over 44 million visitors expected in 2019.
However, the current U.S. political climate toward Mexico, safety and security concerns even in tourist areas, the dismantling of the national tourism board in May and reports of massive amounts of algae washing up on some beaches may leave some travelers with doubts on whether to travel to the destination.
And whether tourists should travel to Mexico may depend on where they’re going and how they prepare.
In May, YestoMexico, a U.S. nonprofit organization that seeks to educate travelers about Mexico in order to encourage visitation, surveyed a network of U.S. travel agents and professionals in the Mexican tourism industry about the perceived impact of media reporting in the U.S. on Mexico’s reputation. Of the more than 200 people who responded, 93% said they felt that Mexico’s reputation as a tourist destination has been at least slightly impacted as a result of constant news reports on immigration and border security issues.
Political backdrop
In a deal announced Friday, Mexico agreed to increase security along its southern border with Guatemala, where many Central Americans are crossing into Mexico on their way to the U.S.
In addition, Mexico has agreed to take “decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks,” according to an overview of the agreement released by the U.S. State Department.
President Donald Trump had threatened 5% tariffs on all Mexican imports unless officials there figured out a way to crack down on the flow of Central American migrants.
“The ongoing politics surrounding what’s happening at the U.S.- Mexico border is a factor that can’t be ignored, says Tom Brussow, president of YesToMexico and Sunsational Beach Vacations, a travel agency based in Wisconsin. “While the constant news flow, which often generalizes Mexico unfairly in a negative light, surely affects how Mexico is perceived, the truth is Mexico’s most-popular tourist destinations are hundreds of miles away and are unimpacted and uninvolved in the political issues driving these headlines.”
Dissolution of the national tourism board

In May, the Mexico Tourism Board, known as the Consejo, was hit with drastic cuts.
“The decision by Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to disband the Mexico Tourism Board is unfortunate for those of us who want to promote and share the wonders of Mexico with the world,” said Zachary Rabinor, CEO of Journey Mexico, a network of travel agents and travel planners specializing in Mexico. “It is great to see AMLO’s passion for investing in the Mayan Train that will traverse the Yucatan Peninsula, but promoting Mexico as a world-class travel destination is equally important.”
Funding is being diverted from the tourism board to the Mayan Train project, which aims to create more comprehensive transit for local communities.
The individual states of Mexico are now reliant on their own funding to promote themselves to foreign tourists instead of centralized government help.
“The dissolution of the Mexico Tourism Board has affected us by not having a promotional umbrella campaign for the entire country and different segments in the country, the majority of which have always promoted the Quintana Roo destinations,” Dario Flota Ocampo, Director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Board told USA TODAY. Quintana Roo includes the hot spots of Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
“The greatest impact has been on budget. For example, participation in international trade shows and fairs now costs us five or six times more than what it cost before,” Ocampo said.
“Following the dissolution of the Mexico Tourism Board, the Jalisco State (capital is Guadalajara) has begun to work more closely with neighboring states, like Guanajuato and Mexico City in order to join resources and use them in more efficient ways to promote their destinations,” Germán Ralis, Tourism Secretary of the Jalisco State told USA TODAY.

Is Mexico safe?
The U.S. State Department currently has a “Level 2” travel advisory warning on a scale of 1 to 4, which means “exercise increased caution.” But some of Mexico’s states have Level 4 advisories, including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas. Common tourist regions like Baja California, Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Oaxaca have a Level 2 advisory.
Some tourists have recently had safety issues while traveling to Mexico. Thomas Finn, mentioned in a Twitter post that he was robbed in Mexico June 3. “A guy took $200 from me in Cancun night club, and he made a lunge towards me and before he could hit me, I hit him in the head with my water bottle and immediately sprinted away back to my hotel,” Finn told USA TODAY in an email.
Tourist areas are not immune.
The State Department issued a travel advisory in August 2018 warning American citizens headed to Mexico to use caution in several states the same week eight bodies were discovered in Cancun outside of the city’s beach hotel zone, though the warning did not refer to the Quintana Roo/Cancun area.
An investigation last year from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which is part of the USA TODAY Network, found that more than 170 travelers had become sick, seriously injured — and in some cases died — after drinking small and moderate amounts of alcohol at all-inclusive resorts throughout the country.
David Leventhal is the owner of Playa Viva resort in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa in the Guerrero state, which has a Level 4 travel advisory warning (do not travel). Leventhal believes the travel ban in his region is wrong because it is a blanket ban on the entire state. “This is like banning all travel to a state like Colorado as a result of a series of school shootings,” Leventhal told USA TODAY. “Tourists are in no more danger skiing in Aspen or Vail as a result of school shootings. Potential gang violence in the non-tourist areas does not make beach vacation tourist areas dangerous.”
Some cities and states in Mexico are creating new security measures to maintain and increase tourism. Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board told USA TODAY that Los Cabos implemented a five-point turnaround plan in 2017 to strengthen security infrastructure. As a result, Esponda claims the destination experienced over a 90% decrease in crime since 2017.
“Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and Cabo San Lucas remain safe,” says Brussow. “Perception doesn’t always match reality as often violent crimes that are reported on in the U.S. take place outside of main tourism zones. However, by tourists using common sense and taking reasonable safety precautions, they should have no hesitancy in visiting Mexico.”
Mike Nelson, owner of mexicomike.com, a site that educates people on driving and road tripping in Mexico, agrees.
“I drive all over Mexico frequently to update my highway guides for driving tourists,” Nelson told USA TODAY. “I’ve been driving Mexico for 40 years, and my opinion is that Mexico is safer for tourists today than it was five years ago. Recently, I drove about 1,025 miles round trip from Reynosa to the town of Calvillo, Aguascalientes. I was alone and not once did I feel unsafe even though most of my trip was in areas classified as Level 3 (reconsider travel).”

Some Mexico beaches overrun by algae
Another issue that has become more prominent is that Caribbean beaches in Mexico, including Cancun and Cozumel, are suffering from algae bloom. The putrid macro algae, or sargassum, is being brought from somewhere between the Atlantic Ocean and Brazil by ocean currents.
“The sargassum season is generally from May to October; however it has historically been light to unnoticeable,” said Rabinor of Journey Mexico. “In the past couple of years, Mexico along with the Caribbean has experienced especially heavy episodes of sargassum.”
Rabinor urges travelers to check with their hotels to make sure they have procedures in place to clear their beaches of the algae as needed. Some days the hotels may need to clear the beaches more than once a day, while other times it may be needed just a couple of times a week depending on the sargassum levels.
“We recommend that travelers work with reputable Mexico travel providers, who are constantly monitoring the situation so that they are more likely to stay at a property that has plans and the means to manage their beaches,” Rabinor said. Journey Mexico has a blog with updates on Mexico beach sargassum levels.
Measures to repurpose the sargassum are also underway. “Numerous projects have been proposed by government and private entities to use the sargassum in composting, fertilization for golf courses, shoe soles, construction materials, cellulose to make paper, to generate electricity in hotels and obtaining collagen for cosmetic use, among other ideas,” Ocampo said.
There are other attractions beyond the beaches, like golf and spas that make the Quintana Roo region still worth a visit, he added.

Heya, if possible, could you give us the titles of the books about Postclassic Yucatec Maya clothing, textiles and culture? It sounds really interesting and I for one would love to read them!
The main ones I’m using for research were needed for accurate visual representation, which are:
And there’s another one that was about the temple illustrations at Chichen Itza (about warriors) but I cannot for the life of me find it right now
