Requested by anon: fanfic request please --You faint while on the job with Maya, worrying both Carina and Maya
Words: 1476
I have a hyperfixation on Carina at the moment lmao...I need her to **** my ****** and ***** me on a daily basis
The alarm blared through Station 19, jolting everyone into action. Maya Bishop moved like a lightning bolt, the epitome of efficiency as she called out assignments. “Jack, you’re with me! Sullivan, grab the hose team! Y/N, you’re on search and rescue with Gibson. Let’s move, people!”
You nodded sharply, adrenaline already coursing through your veins. As a firefighter-paramedic, this was what you lived for. The call was for a residential fire, a potential family of four trapped inside. The stakes were high—just the way Maya liked it.
As the team piled into the engine, Maya’s sharp voice cut through the tense atmosphere. “This is a full-team effort. No cutting corners. Lives depend on us.” Her words carried the usual authority, but you caught the faintest edge of worry as her gaze flicked to you. Maya’s protective nature had only intensified since your relationship began. While she trusted your abilities, she couldn’t turn off the part of her that cared deeply.
Carina, stationed in the aid car, gave you a reassuring look before you rolled out. Her presence was a balm in the chaos. You carried the warmth of her gaze with you as the engine sped toward the inferno.
The fire roared as you arrived on scene, thick black smoke billowing out of the two-story home. It was a chaotic symphony: screaming neighbors, hissing water, and the crackle of consuming flames. Maya wasted no time, barking orders with precision.
“Y/N, Gibson, second floor!” she shouted through her mask. “Find them and get them out!”
You didn’t hesitate, following Gibson into the blaze. The heat was oppressive, your gear feeling like a furnace, but you powered through. You trusted your training, your instincts, and your team. Room by room, you searched, the smoke stinging your eyes and stealing your breath despite the mask.
“Found one!” Gibson called out, hefting a child into his arms. “I’m taking them down!”
“Go!” you replied, your voice muffled but firm. Alone now, you pushed forward, searching for the remaining family members. You found a woman and her infant huddled in a corner, their faces streaked with soot.
“I’ve got you,” you said, your voice gentle despite the urgency. You carefully scooped up the infant, helping the mother to her feet. “Stay close to me. We’re getting out of here.”
The journey back was a gauntlet. The heat was unbearable, and your vision swam as you struggled to keep your breathing steady. You emerged into the cool night air just as Gibson returned for backup.
“Great work, Y/N,” he said, taking the infant from you to hand over to paramedics. You nodded, trying to catch your breath.
Maya was at your side instantly, her sharp eyes scanning you. “You okay?” she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
“Yeah, just… hot,” you replied, waving her off. But the world tilted dangerously, and you staggered. Maya’s hands shot out to steady you.
“Hey! Stay with me, Y/N,” she said, her voice rising in alarm.
The edges of your vision blurred, and the last thing you saw was Carina rushing toward you from the aid car.
When you came to, it was to the sound of Carina’s voice, calm yet laced with worry. “Y/N, can you hear me?”
You blinked, the sterile white of the Station’s aid room coming into focus. Carina’s dark eyes were inches from yours, her hand warm against your cheek. Maya stood behind her, arms crossed but her face betraying her anxiety.
“What happened?” you croaked.
“You fainted,” Carina said, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Heat exhaustion, likely compounded by dehydration. When was the last time you ate? Or drank water?”
You tried to think but came up blank. Maya groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Damn it, Y/N. How many times have we told you to take care of yourself?”
“I’m fine,” you said, attempting to sit up. But Carina gently pushed you back down.
“You are not fine,” she countered as she forced her voice down despite her frustration. “You’re staying here until I’m sure you’re stable.”
“We’re not losing you to a preventable mistake,” Maya added, her voice softer now but no less firm. “You scared the hell out of us.”
The sincerity in her tone made your chest tighten. You knew Maya cared deeply, but this felt more personal. Her eyes bore into yours, a mixture of anger and fear swirling in their depths. Carina’s hand never left yours, her thumb brushing soothing circles over your skin.
Carina’s voice broke the moment. “You need rest and fluids. No arguments.”
You nodded reluctantly, the fight draining out of you. As Carina set up an IV, Maya pulled up a chair beside the cot. “You’re benched for the rest of the shift,” she said. “And maybe longer, depending on what Carina says.”
“Maya—”
“Don’t,” she interrupted. “You’re not invincible, Y/N. None of us are.”
Her words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. You met her gaze, seeing the vulnerability she rarely let show. It wasn’t just about the job. It was about you.
Carina squeezed your hand gently, drawing your attention back to her. “Promise us you’ll take better care of yourself.”
You swallowed hard, the weight of their concern settling over you. “I promise.”
The rest of the night was uneventful, but the memory of their worry lingered. Maya’s protective streak and Carina’s nurturing care were constants in your life, but seeing them so deeply affected by your lapse hit you hard. They loved you, and you loved them—a bond that went beyond words.
Over the next few days, their concern manifested in different ways. Maya’s sharp reminders to drink water and take breaks became routine, while Carina packed you meals with little notes tucked inside: “Stay strong.”
At first, it was overwhelming. You weren’t used to being the center of such focused care. But gradually, you came to see it for what it was: they loved you.
One evening, as you sat between them on the couch at home, Carina’s head resting on your shoulder and Maya’s hand entwined with yours, you reflected on how far you’d come together. Maya’s sharp edges had softened with you and Carina, and Carina’s nurturing spirit provided the glue that held the three of you together. You were a team in every sense, each of you bringing something vital to the relationship.
“I’ve been thinking,” Maya said, breaking the comfortable silence. “Maybe we should all take a few days off. Go somewhere. Just us.”
Carina perked up, her dark eyes lighting with excitement. “I like this idea. A vacation would be good for all of us.”
You smiled at the thought. “Where would we even go?”
“Anywhere with no fires, no emergencies, and no stress,” Maya said. Her gaze softened as she looked at you. “We’ve been through a lot. I think we deserve a break.”
Carina nodded, squeezing your hand. “We do. And you, my love, need to learn how to relax.”
You chuckled, the warmth of their love washing over you. “Alright, let’s do it. A getaway sounds perfect.”
The trip turned out to be exactly what you all needed. A small cabin by a serene lake provided the perfect escape. Maya’s competitive streak came out during kayaking races, while Carina reveled in teaching you both how to make authentic Italian meals in the cabin’s rustic kitchen.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, the three of you sat on the porch wrapped in blankets. The world felt still, the only sounds the gentle lapping of water and the occasional chirp of crickets.
Maya broke the silence, her voice soft. “I don’t say it enough, but I’m so grateful for both of you. You’ve changed my life in ways I never expected.”
Carina reached for her hand, her other arm draped around your shoulders. “We’ve all changed each other. That’s what love does.”
You leaned into them, your heart full. “I’m the luckiest person alive to have you both. Thank you for… everything.”
Maya kissed your temple, her lips lingering. “We’re in this together, always.”
As the stars emerged one by one, you knew this was what mattered most: the love you shared, the family you’d built. No fire, no challenge, could ever burn brighter than this.
By the time your next shift rolled around, you were back to full strength. But the experience had left its mark. You made a conscious effort to hydrate, eat, and rest when needed—not just for yourself, but for the people who cared about you.
Maya and Carina were quick to notice. “Good to see you listening for once,” Maya teased, though her smile was warm.
Carina simply hugged you, her relief palpable. “I love you both,” you replied, pulling them close.

So they are both worried out of their minds. Then Maya has to go out on a call and find it was R who wrecked their car trying to get home before the storm hit. (Could be severe or non-severe injuries) R goes to the hospital with Maya in the aid car and Carina joins them in the ER.

Authors note: I heard the song "What the water gave me - Florence + The Machine" while writing this story. I would advise you to listen to the song as well while reading through this story to get the feel of a real Station 19 rescue mission like in the series. Of course it's not a must! ♥
ᕚ---ᕘ
The sky over Seattle steadily darkened as pitch-black thunderclouds rolled in like a tidal wave. The wind began to howl as if playing its own somber tune, rushing restlessly through the skyscrapers of the city. Streets were quickly emptied as people rushed home for shelter. The trees bent under the force of the storm as if begging for mercy, but the storm was relentless. It thundered as if Zeus himself wanted to keep the crowds in their place while the rain fell in thick, large drops and threatened to drown Seattle. The sound of the wind, the falling of the rain and the thunder symphoned in a unique melody and conveyed a frightening atmosphere.
The telephones of the active fire brigade beeped in unison, a warning of the approaching storm that came in way too late. The tough captain of the fire department swallowed hard as she could not reach you, who worked just a few minutes away from her. But you did not answer, the connection was already disrupted, appearing to be off. "She wanted to be here fifteen minutes ago, Carina," both her and the brunette's worries grew with every minute through the phone as they imagined the worst possible scenarios without having any sign of life from you.
"Calm down, Bambina. There is probably total chaos on the streets. Fallen trees, flooding. Maybe she is just stuck in a traffic jam or an emergency came in."
The fire station was flooded with red alarm lights, while the walls shook from violent gusts of wind, preventing the young blonde from speaking further. Raindrops pelted against the roller shutter door, which opened more with every second, allowing the lightning strikes to break through their vision. -Fire engines 19 and 23. Ambulance 19 to Cedar Road Lane 6. Car struck by tree, person seriously injured and trapped.-
The firefighters rushed around, donning their suits and gear before grabbing their helmets. Like-minded, they rushed to the waiting vehicles, only Maya stopped briefly. „Please let me know if you hear anything from her. Stai attenta, bambina!" (Be careful, bambina!). She nodded, knowing that Carina could not see the gesture and hung up before hopping into the squad cars and starting the sirens. Pressing the accelerator, they raced through the whirlwind around them, trying to avoid the tree branches as much as possible.
Lightning flashed across the dangerous-looking sky, and thunder rolled at the same time like an angry demon. Maya clung to the steering wheel as she tried to keep her eyes on the wet, blurry road. They made their way through the flooded streets, branches flying through the air and trash cans tipping over and spilling across the sidewalk.
It was as if the world around her was collapsing in a chaotic dance of wind and water. "Listen guys, I know you want to help the person in the car, but first and foremost, think about your health and your life," the storm roared so loudly that it seemed like it wanted to tear the entire city apart and hardly anyone understood what the captain was saying over the radio. "This is one of the worst storms in years, a state of emergency has been declared and normally no one should be on the roads, so it is a mystery to me why anyone would be so dumb to be driving,"
Her team was clearly tense, the radios crackling in their ears, but they nodded to the captain as confirmation that they had understood the message. Maya did not want to lose any man or woman in her group to the storm. "We are approaching the scene of the accident. Be ready for anything, people. We can do this!" she said calmly and encouragingly while the fire engine´s sirens blared through the dark night.
When the team from Station 19 arrived at the scene of the accident, they were confronted with a dark and serious scene. The car is crammed in by a huge tree and is badly deformed, the hood of which is completely smashed and dented while some branches have pierced through the windshield and turned the interior of the vehicle into a field of rubble.
The fire team jumped out of the emergency vehicles and fought through the wind and rain to reach the car. But the captain remains rooted to the spot in front of the stern of the wreck, looking absentmindedly at the license plate, which was hanging askew. "Y/n.. IT IS Y/N!" she shouted unhindered amid the raging and deafening thunder and her team stopped their tasks in shock, Andy and Gibson focusing their gaze from the thick tree over to the woman in the driver's seat, who Warren was already trying to find vital signs on.
Maya lunged forward, her heart pounding with worry. Her helmet was almost blown away by the wind as she stepped closer, the flashlight shaking in her hand as she shone the light through the shattered window. Her heart seemed to skip a beat as she recognized the familiar features amid the devastation. She was confirmed that she did not have a number twist on the license plate, but that it really was you. Seriously injured and trapped in the car. “Y/n!” she cried, her voice filled with a terror she had never known before. Maya knew she had to stay calm now, that she had to be the professional captain, but her heart was screaming with fear and worry.
The other members of the fire department worked quickly and precisely. "Dean, Montgomery. Grab the hydraulic cutters! We need to get her out of here as quickly as possible. Her vital signs are at risk of plummeting!" shouted Warren. They used cutting tools to fight against the metal of the car on the passenger side and the resistance of the tree while Maya knelt next to the wreckage and held your hand, which was probably thrown out of the broken window after the impact and was now lying on the scratched paint of the outer door. "It looks bad in there! Be careful not to hurt her any further, approach carefully!"
Your eyes were dazed with pain and fear, but you were breathing, albeit weakly. Hearing her voice, you seemed to find some peace for a moment, your dull eyes glued to hers. Desperately wanting to say something, you opened your mouth from which blood began to ooze, but your crushed and injured lungs did not even let in air.
"Hold on, darling. Do not say anything, I am here. We will get you out of there, I promise." The blonde whispered, her voice firm to reassure you even as her own thoughts were caught in a chaos of worry and despair. The minutes stretched endlessly as her team struggled to bend the metal and free their captain's fiancée. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the metal gave way. Using their combined strength, Vic and Warren pulled you from the wreckage, carefully, yet as quickly as possible. As soon as they freed you, they carried you to the ambulance. Maya followed them, never taking her eyes off you. Your condition was serious, but you were still clinging to life. "Carina is coming. She is going to be at the hospital, she will be by your side the second you get there. But you have to fight now, okay? Fight for us."
The rain continued to beat down on you, the storm was still raging, but in the midst of this darkness and chaos there was a glimmer of hope- you were saved, and she would do anything now to help you fight through this storm. But it was hard to keep positive thoughts as the storm continued to sing its destructive song. She closed her eyes tightly as she rode in the ambulance and prayed, with your bloodstained hand in hers, that the next morning would bring a certain light to your health.

Trees swayed in the crisp early morning breeze of that Autumn morning. The sound of a beeping alarm roused Carina from her sleep, yawning and sighing contently as she sat up and stretched out her arm to silence the alarm.
Rubbing her eyes, she looked over, expecting Maya to be doing the same but the blonde was still out cold. One of her arms was loosely hanging off the edge of the bed as her messy bedhead sprawled on the pillows.
The OB allowed herself a small smile before gently squeezing her shoulder, “Come on sleepy girl, you’ve gotta wake up now baby.” She cooed quietly, continuing to lightly massage her shoulder until Maya made a small, sleepy noise of irritation to indicate she’d woken up.
Maya groaned softly, squeezing her eyes shut and nuzzling further into the pillow as if she could stave off morning for just a bit longer.
The brunette chuckled, giving her a playful nudge. "Alright, alright, I’m up," Maya mumbled, pushing herself up slowly. Her hair was still a wild mess, and she blinked at Carina with groggy, half-lidded eyes.
It was only as she sat up however that Maya noticed the dull throbbing of her temples, an indication of what was to come. She cursed to herself inwardly; she’d been in the clinic a few days ago and had been on the majority of Aid-Car calls, and the vast majority being for person with symptoms of the flu... She sniffled, already feeling some congestion building at the front of her sinuses. It wasn’t hard to work out that she was getting sick.
As she swung her feet over the side of the bed, Maya’s eyes glanced up to the two costumes hung neatly on the back of their bedroom door. Shit. She’d forgotten about the party tonight that Vic and Travis were hosting - her and Carina had bought matching zombie costumes to wear together.
Carina had picked them out herself and had spent hours planning how to do their makeup. Simply saying she was excited was an understatement. It was why Maya instantly knew that she couldn’t let her girlfriend find out about this. She knew what the brunette was like, she’d insist on staying home and missing out, but all Maya wanted was for her to enjoy herself tonight.
The blonde took a deep breath, trying to ignore the tickle in her throat as she stood up. She glanced at her girlfriend, who was already gathering towels and humming softly as she prepared for their morning shower. Carina’s enthusiasm was unmistakable; her energy brightened the room as she practically bounced toward the bathroom.
She was just about to follow her in with a desperate tickle ran down the bridge of her nose, she barely had enough time to bring the hem of her shirt over her nose before- “HhhhMpp’shhu!”
“Bless you!” The Italian’s warm voice called the bathroom just before the sound of running water began out, steam rolling out into the bedroom from the open, “You joining me in here?” There was a hopeful tone to her voice, one the firefighter couldn’t resist.
Within 5 minutes she was under the warm water, closing her eyes as it ran down her body. Still, she couldn’t help but shiver involuntarily as Carina ran a hand around the front of her stomach, pulling their bodies together.
“Mmh?” She moaned quietly, opening her eyes as she looked over her shoulder at the smiling brunette.
Carina smiled, grabbing the shampoo, and squirting some into her hands, “You’re cute when you’re groggy bambina.” She cooed before beginning to massage her hand through Maya’s scalp, gently washing her thick hair. She felt the younger woman lean against her as she continued, humming quietly to herself as she finished washing her hair.
They swapped positions, Maya wanting to return the favour. The blonde was lost under her touch but jumped as she felt two hands suddenly grip her hips. Carina squeaked a little as Maya abruptly hitched forward with a set of itchy sounding sneezes against her shoulder, using the woman to keep her balance.
“Ugh, excuse me baby.” Maya sniffled a little thickly afterwards, “Shampoo tickled me.” She quickly offered an explanation before clearing her throat and continuing.
“You’re okay, don’t worry,” Carina soothed, turning to press a soft kiss to the surgeon’s collar bone. She hummed at the subtle warmth coming from her skin but said nothing as the two finished up their shower and began getting ready for work.
Luckily, it was only a short shift, they’d both already arranged cover in preparation to head out tonight. Still, the idea of Maya dragging her arse round the station for 10 hours wasn’t exactly appealing, she stifled a groan as she dried herself on and pulled on her clothes, her muscles feeling tight and knotted as she moved.
The drive to work wasn’t awful. She did her best to match the blonde’s bubbly attitude, chiming in every now and then as Carina excitedly explained her plans for the day. She’d organised some sort of event for the kids on her ward and couldn’t wait to get it started. The blonde nodded along; she found it adorable how somebody could get so excited about a holiday. It wasn’t like she didn’t care; in fact, Maya did often enjoy jumping out and spreading the seasonal spooks, but it was just hard to be excited with a throbbing headache drumming at the front of her sinuses.
By the time they’d arrived, Maya had almost drifted back off as her head rested against the cool passenger window, “Have a good day bambina.” The two exchanged a small goodbye, the blonde kissing her girlfriend on the cheek before climbing out of the car and waving off her girlfriend as she drove off.
The cold air nipped at her skin and she quickly headed inside, wasting no time in heading inside that station at the hope it’d warm her up a little. Once she was in the changing rooms, the firefighter let herself relax a little, her tense shoulders slumping as she momentarily sat down on a bench.
She let out a congested sigh as she stretched up and pulled her sweater over her head as she grabs her uniform. But she tugged her sweatshirt off, she felt the telltale tickle creeping up her nose again, her breath hitching before she could even think to cover. She quickly pulled the sweatshirt up in front of her face, her shoulders hunching instinctively.
She buried her face into the fabric, muffling a series of sneezes that left her sniffling thickly, the sweatshirt doing its best to shield her from making too much noise, “Fuck…”
Maya took a deep breath as she wiped her nose on her sleeve with a grimace, feeling a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over her. She tossed her sweatshirt into her locker and finished changing into her uniform, her nose still prickling from the lingering itch.
The morning seemed to crawl by as the blonde made her way through a seemingly endless set of drills, apparently Sullivan wasn’t in the mood for a light, low effort day – not surprising. As she struggled to catch her breath, the fluorescent lights above only seemed to amplify her headache. Trying to keep a low profile was proving to be increasingly difficult as the growing ache at the back of her throat has her ducking into her elbow with rough, increasingly congested-sounding coughs, earning her side glances from the rest of the team who knew Maya usually breezed through these sorts of things.
Finally though, the klaxon blared with on oncoming call and the drills were forgotten as the team rushed to clamber into their gear and engines as they raced off to the scene.
By the end of the call, Maya felt like her entire body had been backed over by a truck. Dull aches ran over her entire body, and she’d had to change her shirt since she’d sweated through her first one despite the fact she felt utterly freezing.
“God, I just need a minute.” She muttered to herself as she grabbed a bottle of water from her locker. The room seemed to spin as she took a sip, and the urge to sneeze was once again prickling at the edges of her already raw nose.
She ducked into her elbow with a damp set of sneezes, the sound clawing at her throat. The firefighter groaned to herself, grabbing a tissue from a nearby box and giving a thick, congested blow, grimacing at the sound she’d made as she threw her soggy tissues in the trash.
“Damn, you sound horrible Bishop.” A sudden voice made her jump a little, Andy standing behind her with her arms crossed, before reaching forward to hand her another handful of tissues, “You even good to be here?” She asked, reaching up to press a hand to her forehead which she quickly ducked out of the way of.
“I’m fine.”
The thick sniffles that followed did little to plead her case. Hererra gave her pointed a look and she blew her nose once more, giving a small, defeated mumble, “It’s not that bad.”
“Shouldn’t your girlfriend be doting on you or something?” She rubbed her as she came to sit beside the blonde.
Maya looked up at her for moment before diverting her eyes, gazing to the ground, “Carina doesn’t know. She’s been so excited for this halloween thing tonight, if she knew then she wouldn’t any even about going.”
“You can’t tell her… please. Plus you know Sullivan’s got it out for me at the moment after that last scene. I can’t just go home.” She did have a point there. Her exhaustion had caused a silly error – nobody was hurt and things resolved but the Captain was not pleased.
Andy didn’t look convinced but she seemed to mull it over for a minute before he finally sighed in resignation. “Alright, fine. I won’t tell anyone,” She grumbled in defeat, her voice dropping into a more concerned tone, “Only, on the condition that you’ll take something - at the very least drink some tea. Seriously Mai, you look like you’re about to pass out.”
“Promise,” Maya nodded, managing a faint smile that quickly faltered as another prickling itch flared up in her sinuses. “H-hold on… I hh- nee-need to- Hhh’ESHHHoo! She sneezed openly down into her lap this time, too exhausted to keep her usual efforts to muffle the sound.
Herrera shook her head, muttering something about her stubbornness before standing, giving her shoulder a supportive squeeze as she headed off.
After another few hours of struggling through calls, Maya was feeling worse than ever. She couldn't tell if the constant chills were due to the station’s air conditioning or her worsening fever, and her headache now throbbed with every step. Her limbs felt weighed down by bricks, and she’d started shivering so hard that she could barely hold her pen steady. This wasn’t just a cold; the surgeon was half sure she had a raging sinus infection on top of this damn flu.
It was clear to anyone she was ill. Warren had already began nagging at her to leave for the past few hours, she’d had to stop several times to catch her breath and had ended up sitting out for the final part of the call. She was just about to head inside after they arrived back at the station when Sullivan suddenly stepped in-front of her, reaching forward to gently grab her shoulders to stop her from continuing, “Enough Bishop, wrap it up. You’re going home.”
Maya blinked up at him, her brow knitting as she tried to summon up some defence, but the argument died in her throat as she caught sight of her own reflection in a nearby glass panel. She looked just as terrible as she felt - pale skin and dark, exhausted circles under her eyes, cheeks tinged with an unhealthy crimson flush.
There really was no point arguing, the both of them knew that. She breathed in - as much as she could through her clogged sinuses. At the corners of her eye, she could see Andy giving her a sympathetic look as she came over to join them, “Go home Maya. We both know you’re too sick to be here right now. You’re gonna get yourself or somebody else hurt.”
“Fine.” She grumbled, her voice catching in her throat a little and she muffled a short cough into her elbow. She really didn’t have the strength to argue anymore, not when the room seemed to be spinning around her.
“I’ll help her with her stuff.” Andy explained to Sullivan as she wrapped her arm around the blonde’s waist nudged her towards the lockers, lending a hand as she gathered up her stuff, “You know you can’t go out like this tonight.” Andy went to pull out her phone to order her an uber, “Carina won’t mind if you cancel.”
Maya had just finished ducking into her arm was a harsh cough, “I know but she’ll be disappointed, even if she says she isn’t. She’s been looking forward to it.”
“Rather be disappointed then have her girlfriend pass out.” Gibson’s voice came from behind them, leaning against a support bean as she joined the conversation, Maya gave him a look to back off but he only smirked as he reached into his pocket to pull something out, “Candy?” He offered a handful out, not taking no for answer and putting some in her pocket.
That earnt him a smile - a small, stuffy, exhausted smile but a smile nonetheless. “You’re exhausting.” She grumbled, getting the last of her stuff from her locker.
“You’re exhausted.” Andy pointed out, as she looked down at her phone and ordered an uber.
*^*
By the time Maya made it home, she felt like a ghost of herself. She fumbled with her keys, her vision blurred from fatigue and fever, so much that she didn’t even notice Carina’s car parked in the driveway. Her head was spinning with a haze of exhaustion as she stumbled through the door, desperate to collapse into bed and pretend she wasn’t feeling this awful.
“Hh’ETSCHuu!” She couldn’t hold back the sneeze and barely managed to turn away in time, doubling over slightly as she sneezed once, then again, unable to muffle them. The firefighter groaned thickly, leaning against the wall and sliding down as a wave of dizziness ran over her - a thick, damp cough rattling from her lungs.
Just a few feet ahead of her, Carina frowned, she’d been standing in the doorway to their bedroom, having a perfect view of the whole thing. Her last surgery had been cancelled and she’d gotten home a few hours ago. “Maya Bishop,” Her voice was dripping with concern as she stepped out with her hands on her hips, “You got something you want to tell me?”
Maya froze, caught in the act, her cheeks flushed as she lifted them from her hand and looked up at her, “Carina! You’re, uh... home early.”
“Uh-huh.” Carina folded her arms, trying to hide her concern. She stepped closer, kneeling down to place a gentle hand on Maya’s forehead. “Bambina! you’re burning up.”
Maya pulled out a small piece of candy from her pocket and offered it to her, “Trick or treat?” She rasped, hoping to get away with it - she didn’t.
Carina narrowed her eyes a little, her frown crinkling as she gave her a look that said, “I’m not letting this go.” but nevertheless she unwrapped the candy and popped it into her mouth, unable to hold back a subtle smile as she enjoyed its sweet taste.
The enjoyment was lost a few moments later however when she watched Maya duck into her hands with a damp sneeze.
“God bless you! You sound awful sweet girl.” Carina murmured, extending a hand as she supported the blonde in standing back, instantly bringing her hand to support her waist when she wobbled a little, “Come on, let’s sit down for a sec, yeah?.” She guided her girlfriend over to the sofa, making her sit on the sturdy arm as she checked her over.
“So how are you really feeling?” The brunette reached forward to cup her face, her thumbs gently moving over her cheeks and sinuses instantly recognising the congestion she was holding, “Oh baby, you do not feel good at all, do you?”
The firefighter shook her head, “I just wanted to be okay for tonight…” Her voice broke as she rasped, a painful cough rising from her chest.
Carina’s heart softened, a small sympathetic sigh escaping as Maya looked up at her through glassy, feverish eyes. “No stupid party is worth you getting so sick sweetheart. You shouldn’t have even gotten out of bed today.”
Maya went to argue her chase but the deep itching at the bridge of her nose snatched her breath as she sneezed again, the action being followed by a congested sounding cough.
“Bless you, poor thing,” Carina whispered, her voice brimming with sympathy. “That’s it. Let’s get you into bed, okay?”
Maya just nodded miserably, unable to deny how much she just wanted to curl up and let the world disappear. Carina helped her up, keeping a steadying hand on her waist as they moved to the bedroom, and soon had the brunette had settled under the blankets, tucking them snugly around her. “Wait here, I’ll be right back,” The Italian promised softly.
She only took a few minutes to gather up some essentials, tissues, lozenges. The brunette also made sure to grab one of those little fever gel patches from their first aid kit as well as the thermometer they kept in there.
Soon enough, she was back by her side, rolling the thermometer across her hot, damp forehead. She sighed at the high number before peeling off one of the patches and gently laying it across before running her hands through her messy hair, “You really know how to overdo it, don’t you? Silly girl.”
Carina felt herself sigh again as she crawled up into bed and let herself sit next to Maya, smiling when the brunette leant against her. She stayed quiet for a moment, her hand still trailing through her hair. “You should have taken care of yourself first,” The OB said softly, her voice low and soothing. “I can’t stand seeing you like this.”
“You were just so excited; you love all the holidays. I just wanted you to enjoy the night.” She sighed, looking up at their costumes still hanging on the back of the door.
The brunette reached down to cup her face, tilting her chin to look her girlfriend in the eyes, “I’ve told you already, nothing is more important than you. I’d pick staying here, cuddled up over heading out to a party any day.”
Maya let out a soft, tired chuckle, the sound echoing in her chest. “Even if it’s just the two of us and a box of tissues?”
“Especially if it's just the two of us and a box of tissues.” Carina smiled back, reaching down to pull her laptop onto her lap, turning on Netflix and scrolling through to pick the brunette’s favourite spooky movie, “Happy Halloween, bambina.” She whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her hair.
“Happy Halloween.” Maya replied, her voice soft and sleepy, her hand finding Carina’s and intertwining their fingers as she finally let herself relax into her hold.

what is this feeling - maya bishop x carina deluca
a/n: happy (belated) holidays @maximilff 🫶🏻 hope you enjoy part one of this marina fic!!! it’s a classic enemies to lovers featuring one of my fave songs from the wicked movie 🙂‍↕️
“a musical?” maya bishop’s tone was deadpan, her eyebrows raised at her best friend, andy herrera. “you want me to audition for a musical?”
“i’ve heard you sing in the shower- there’s no harm in trying.” andy shrugged as she took a bite of her burrito. “plus isn’t your very pretty roommate a part of the club? you could ask her for help.”
maya rolled her eyes at that comment. she knew there was no way her roommate would ever help her, the two of them had been at each other’s throats since the first day they met. andy fully believed that the two of them were harbouring a secret crush on each other- but she knew maya would be too stubborn to ever admit that.
“or do you think you won’t make it?” andy teased, her voice sing song as she pushed the blonde’s buttons. “giving up before you even try, bishop? very unlike you.”maya knew full well what the other girl was doing, but she was never one to back down from a challenge.
“alright, when is this audition?”
much to maya’s surprise, she landed a part- the lead role, no less. much to maya’s horror, her fellow leading lady was none other than her roommate from hell.
carina deluca was fuming. she paced around the dorm room, quick and angry spanish fell from her lips- much to the amusement of callie torres and arizona robbins.
“she doesn’t even do theatre! why the hell would ms nat cast her!” carina threw her hands up in the air in frustration. “arizona would make a wonderful galinda but instead she casts maya????”
“oh this is gonna be fun to watch.” arizona whispered as carina continued on her rant. callie simply nodded, letting out a scoff of laughter at the choice of words the latina chose to use.
“oh, so fun indeed.”
in hindsight, maya could have easily rejected the role. deep down, she knew that this was a once in a lifetime chance to actually try something she always wanted to do. which is how she ended up on stage, next to her roommate that she had successfully avoided up until then.
“alright! first song you two will be doing is “what is this feeling”- vic, start the music?” ms natasha ross watched the two students in front of her closely. from the minute those two stepped onto the stage together for the test reads, she just knew they would have a wonderful chemistry. the opening notes began to play.
what is this feeling so sudden and new?
the first time the two of them had met, maya could not understand what ticked her off about the brunette. maybe it was the way she carried herself- she seemed so effortless and collected. so sure of everything.
“i’m in medicine, you?” carina asked over her shoulder as she arranged her desk neatly. maya couldn’t help but think how pretty her voice sounded.
“um, i’m just doing general ed right now. but my focus is on track.” maya paused. “i want to win the olympics one day.”
carina hummed thoughtfully, “a very big dream. i hope you accomplish it one day.”
maya’s stomach turned, why did the other girl sound like she didn’t believe her? she barely knew her, how dare she think so lowly of her? she snapped back, her tone colder than she expected. “i will. medicine isn’t easy either, isn’t it?”
carina frowned, the tone of the other girl making her uneasy. “i’m prepared for it.”
i felt the moments i laid eyes on you
the brunette straightened and turned around, surprised to see the way maya was staring at her.
“you don’t think im cut out for it?”
carina wasn’t sure why the other girl’s approval meant so much to her- she barely knew her.
“just saying, medicine isn’t easy. people drop out all the time.” maya shrugged, her tone nonchalant.
“neither is winning the olymipcs.” carina shot back. “most people don’t even qualify- what makes you think you can do it?”
my pulse is rushing
“because i’m a hard worker- i’ve trained more than you’ll ever understand.”
my head is reeling
“and i’ve worked harder than you’ll ever understand to be here today.”
yeah well, my face is flushing
with a start, the two realised they were alot closer than they were at the start of their conversation. maya cleared her throat as she turned away. she busied herself unpacking her bags, hoping that the warmth in her cheeks wasn’t obvious.
what is this feeling? fervid as a flame
the two of them busied themselves with school and extracurriculars. maya obviously joined track while carina decided to join theatre.
“kinda on the nose no? the drama queen herself in the theatre club. she threw such a fit when i came home late yesterday.” maya groaned as she recounted the story to andy and vic.
“i really don’t understand how the two of you got off on such the wrong foot. she’s so sweet.” being a part of the theatre club meant that victoria hughes had her fair share of interactions with the brunette. she never understood what is was about carina that pissed maya off so much.
“i don’t know, i just have this.. strong feeling against her.”
does it have a name? yes..
“she is SO messy.” carina slammed her tray down at the table, her face dark with anger. “she comes back LATE and makes SUCH a ruckus looking for her things. she acts like the whole world should revolve around her!”
arizona and callie shared a quiet look.
loathing.
“i hate her. honestly i can’t wait for this year to be over.” maya seethed.
unadulterated loathing
“i hate her so much. it will be my greatest joy when i finally move out at the end of the year.” carina stabbed at her food with her fork.
for your face
“there’s just something about her .. face!” maya gestured vaguely towards her one face with her fingers. “it’s infuriating!”
your voice
“and her voice. ohmygod her voice! she talks like knows everything and everyone should just listen to her.”
your clothing
“and what is up with her leaving her clothes everywhere? i’m tripping over them everyday!”
let’s just say, i loathe it all.
“you really do hate her huh?” arizona smiled sympathetically.
“i really do.” carina nodded. “and i know she feels the exact same.”

Requested by anon: Maybe reader x Carina x Maya where reader has to deal with diabetes :)
Words: 2058
The rhythmic sound of Maya’s sneakers hitting the pavement matched the steady beat of her breath as she jogged through the quiet streets of Seattle. The early morning chill brushed against her skin, waking her up fully. She loved mornings like this—a little time to herself before the world got busy. As she rounded the corner back toward home, she allowed herself a smile, already thinking about you and Carina waiting inside.
Maya quietly opened the front door to the familiar scent of coffee and the faint hum of Carina’s voice. Her Italian accent floated through the air, warm and melodic as she hummed to herself in the kitchen.
“Good morning,” Maya called softly as she stepped inside, her voice a little husky from the run.
Carina turned, her face lighting up when she saw her wife. “Buongiorno, amore,” she greeted, stepping forward to press a kiss to Maya’s cheek. “How was your run?”
“Perfect. Quiet streets, clear sky. But I’m glad to be back.” Maya leaned in to steal another kiss before glancing toward the couch, where you were curled up with a blanket and your glucose monitor. “How’s she doing?”
Carina’s gaze softened. “Still waking up, but we had a little incident earlier. Her levels dropped during the night.”
Maya’s heart clenched. She hated knowing you struggled, even with Carina’s medical expertise and her own insistence on staying informed and proactive about your diabetes management. They were always ready to support you, but that didn’t make it any easier.
You looked up as Maya approached, your sleepy smile growing when you saw her. “Morning,” you mumbled, voice a little groggy.
Maya knelt beside you, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “Hey, how are you feeling?”
“Better now,” you said honestly. “Carina already fixed me up with juice and a snack. She’s spoiling me.”
Carina appeared behind Maya, carrying a tray with coffee, more snacks, and your favorite tea. “Spoiling you is my favorite hobby, baby,” she said with a playful wink.
You laughed softly, the sound light and genuine. “I’m not going to argue with that.”
Maya settled onto the couch beside you, wrapping an arm around your shoulders as Carina took a seat on your other side. The three of you fit together perfectly, your small family a puzzle where every piece was in its rightful place.
“Do you want to take it easy today?” Maya asked, her voice gentle. “We don’t have to do anything if you’re not feeling up to it.”
You hesitated. “I think I’ll be okay. I just need to keep an eye on my levels. Besides, we had plans, right?”
Carina smiled warmly. “We did, but you are more important than any plans. We can do whatever makes you feel good.”
Touched by their care, you felt a swell of love for these two incredible women. “Maybe we could still go to the park? I like the idea of getting some fresh air.”
Maya grinned. “The park it is. But only if you let us pack a full picnic bag with everything you might need.”
You rolled your eyes playfully but nodded. “Deal.”
The park was bustling with activity when you arrived, families enjoying the sunny day and dogs chasing frisbees on the grass. Maya and Carina carried the picnic supplies, insisting you relax and save your energy. They found a cozy spot beneath a large tree, its shade providing just the right amount of coolness.
Maya spread out the blanket while Carina unpacked the food and drinks. They’d brought an assortment of snacks tailored to your dietary needs, as well as a few of their own favorite snacks. Watching them work so seamlessly together made your heart feel full.
“You two are a little over-the-top, you know that?” you teased as you settled onto the blanket.
Carina smirked. “Over-the-top in love with you? Guilty as charged.”
Maya chuckled. “It’s true. We’re not sorry about it either.”
You blushed, but your smile was radiant. “I’m the luckiest person in the world.”
“We’d argue that we’re the lucky ones,” Maya said, leaning over to kiss your temple.
The three of you spent the afternoon enjoying the simple pleasures of the park. Maya’s competitive streak emerged during a frisbee game, and Carina’s laughter was contagious as she attempted—and failed—to keep up. You joined in for a while, your spirits lifted by their energy, before settling back on the blanket to rest and watch them.
It was during moments like this, surrounded by love and laughter, that you felt truly at peace. Diabetes might be a part of your life, but it didn’t define it. With Maya and Carina by your side, you knew you could face anything.
The late afternoon sun began to dip behind the trees, painting the sky in hues of gold and pink. As the air cooled, the three of you packed up your picnic, Maya insisting on carrying the heavier bag despite your protests.
“You’ve done enough today,” Maya said firmly but with a smile. “Let me handle this.”
You relented, knowing there was no arguing with her when she was in protective mode. Carina looped her arm through yours as you walked back to the car, her presence comforting and steady.
Once home, you felt the familiar tug of fatigue creeping in. Carina noticed immediately and guided you to the couch while Maya put away the picnic gear.
“Rest here,” Carina said softly. “I’ll get you some water.”
You nodded, sinking into the plush cushions. Your glucose monitor beeped, and you glanced at the reading. It was a little higher than you’d like, but not alarmingly so. Still, you made a mental note to adjust your evening routine.
Maya returned from the kitchen and sat beside you, her hand finding yours. “You good?” she asked, her blue eyes scanning your face for any signs of discomfort.
“Yeah,” you said with a small smile. “Just tired.”
Carina returned with a glass of water and sat on your other side. “That’s understandable. It’s been a full day. Why don’t we all take it easy tonight?”
“What did you have in mind?” you asked, your curiosity piqued.
Maya smirked. “Pajamas, takeout, and a cheesy rom-com marathon?”
You laughed softly. “That sounds perfect.”
The three of you changed into your coziest pajamas, and Maya took charge of ordering food while Carina set up the living room. Pillows and blankets were piled high on the couch, and the soft glow of fairy lights added to the cozy atmosphere. You felt a wave of affection as you watched them work, their love for you evident in every little detail.
When the food arrived, the three of you dug in, laughter and conversation filling the room. Maya’s commentary on the movie’s plot holes had you in stitches, while Carina’s occasional exclamations in Italian added a delightful flair.
As the evening wore on, you found yourself sandwiched between them once again, their warmth lulling you into a sense of security. Carina’s fingers gently traced patterns on your arm, while Maya’s hand rested on your leg, her thumb brushing small circles.
“Thank you for today,” you murmured, your voice thick with emotion. “I don’t know what I’d do without you two.”
Carina cupped your cheek, her eyes glistening with affection. “You will never have to find out. We’re here, always.”
Maya squeezed your hand. “She’s right. We’re a team, and we’ve got you, no matter what.”
Tears pricked your eyes, but they were happy tears. “I love you both so much.”
“We love you, too,” they said in unison, their voices harmonizing in a way that felt like music.
As you drifted off to sleep, nestled between them, you felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Life might have its challenges, but with Maya and Carina by your side, it was also beautifully, undeniably sweet.
Morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. You woke to the comforting weight of Carina’s arm draped over you and Maya’s hand resting on your waist. The soft hum of their breathing was a soothing soundtrack to your morning.
You lay there for a moment, savoring the tranquility before carefully slipping out of bed. Your glucose monitor beeped as you checked your levels, and you were pleased to see they were stable. Smiling to yourself, you headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
By the time Maya and Carina joined you, drawn by the aroma of coffee and pancakes, you had set the table with care.
“Good morning, chef,” Maya teased, wrapping her arms around your waist from behind.
Carina kissed your cheek. “You’ve been busy. This looks wonderful.”
The three of you enjoyed breakfast together, the conversation light and filled with laughter. As you looked at Maya and Carina, you couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of contentment. They were your safe haven, your greatest support, and your endless source of joy.
Later that day, Maya suggested a short hike on a nearby trail. You hesitated at first, worried about your energy levels, but Carina reminded you that they’d both be by your side every step of the way. With their encouragement, you agreed, and the three of you set out with a small backpack filled with snacks, water, and your medical supplies.
The trail was quiet, surrounded by tall trees and the soothing sound of birdsong. Maya walked ahead, occasionally glancing back to check on you, while Carina stayed close, her hand brushing yours with every step.
“You’re doing great,” Maya called back with a grin. “Almost to the lookout point.”
You smiled, feeling a surge of determination. The path wasn’t easy, but having them there made it manageable—and even enjoyable. When you finally reached the top, the view took your breath away. The city stretched out below, the skyline framed by mountains and a shimmering lake.
“This is amazing,” you said, your voice filled with awe.
Maya wrapped an arm around your shoulders. “So are you. I’m proud of you for doing this.”
The three of you stood there for a while, taking in the beauty of the moment. It was another reminder that, together, you could conquer anything.
That evening, back at home, you curled up on the couch with Maya and Carina, feeling a sense of contentment that words couldn’t fully capture. Your journey wasn’t always easy, but it was filled with love, laughter, and moments that made it all worthwhile.

It had been a relatively quiet morning, until Maya’s alarm blared through the room, pulling a very groggy Carina from a restless sleep beside her.
The brunette hadn’t gotten much rest that night. She’d been tossing and turning for most of the evening, unable to get comfy and as she blinked awake, the distinct feeling of a headache sat behind her temples making them throb ever so slightly.
Carina swallowed against a scratchy throat and winced at the dull ache. She could already tell this wasn’t just a bad night’s sleep; she was definitely coming down with something. Her nose felt stuffy, and she could feel the beginnings of congestion settling in.
Despite how miserable she felt, the Italian plastered a smile on her face as Maya stretched and yawned beside her. “Good morning bambina,” She murmured, trying to sound chipper, though her voice came out slightly hoarser than usual.
“Morning, love,” Maya replied, her voice still thick with sleep. She turned to her girlfriend, her eyes crinkling in a smile. “Did you sleep well?”
“Yeah, just a bit restless,” Carina lied, hoping Maya wouldn’t notice the redness around her eyes or the slight puffiness of her face.
The blonde nodded sympathetically and rolled out of bed. “I’ll go start the coffee,” She replied, already heading toward the kitchen.
Carina sighed with relief as she watched her wife leave the room, allowing herself a moment to rub her aching temples. She sniffled quietly, wincing at how congested she already felt. There was no way she was going to let Maya know she was sick. She knew her wife could get over-anxious at the best of times, the last thing she needed was for her to be worried about her when she was meant to be working. Especially in Maya’s line of work, the slightest break in concentration could have disastrous consequences.
She pulled herself out of bed and stretched, hiding a grimace at the ache in her muscles before beginning to get herself changed.
In all honesty if Carina could’ve bundled up in a one of Maya’s hoodies and some sweatpants she would’ve. The last thing wanted to be wearing was her tight fitting slacks and open front shirt but she was Carina Deluca. She had to keep up appearances. Even if she was just dropping her girlfriend at work.
By the time she’d gotten herself changed, there were small droplets of swear beading along her forehead. Carina could feel them trailing down her back as well. She was definitely running a fever. God this was a nightmare.
The brunette hid a raspy cough against her shoulder before shuffling to the bathroom. Standing in front of the mirror Carina cringed at her appearance though her self-disgust didn’t last for long. A tickle creeping down the bridge of her nose caught her attention and she quickly swiped a tissue just in time to muffle two harsh sneezes into it.
“Great.” She rolled her eyes in displeasure as she swiped another few tissues to blow her nose, “Come on, get it together.”
The Italian sighed before splashing a handful of cold water onto her face before beginning apply her makeup in an attempt to mask her reddening nose and the half-dead look she’d had going on.
The brunette cleared her throat a final step before straightening her posture and headed out to the kitchen. Despite feeling crappy, she couldn’t hold back a smirk at the site of her wife in pyjama shorts, swaying her hips to the rhythm of a Chappel Roan song on the radio as she made her lunch for the day, two steaming cups of coffee already sitting on the counter.
“Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” She mused lovingly, coming behind Maya to wrap her arms around her waist, “I’m presuming one of those are for me?” She pointed towards the two cups.
“Yeah, I know you usually take it black but I know you didn’t slept great so thought you could do with something less harsh.” Maya smiled, turning to press a kiss to her wife’s cheek, “It has some of that vanilla syrup you pretend not to like too.”
Carina shook her head but couldn’t bite back the smile pulling at her lips, “Aren’t you a sweetheart?” She thanked her before taking the cup and sipping it softly, “Thank you bambina.” The hot liquid felt amazing against her sore throat.
“Of course.” Maya smiled, carefully slid out of Carina’s hold as she finished packing up her lunch before taking a sip of her own coffee, “I should go get dressed, I’m only in for a few hours today, just covering for a member of B shift with Andy but she’s not going to be impressed if I’m late.”
Carina chuckled softly, nodding as she tried to ignore the pounding in her head. "Yeah, don't want to keep Andy waiting," she agreed, giving Mai’ a gentle nudge towards the bedroom. "I'll be ready to go by the time you're dressed."
Maya disappeared into the bedroom, leaving her wife alone in the kitchen. She leaned heavily against the counter, closing her eyes briefly to stop the room swaying around her.
By the time the blonde returned, fully dressed and looking effortlessly professional, Carina had managed to pull herself together enough to look presentable. “Ready to go?” she asked, forcing a smile.
“Ready,” Maya replied, leaning in for a quick kiss before grabbing her bag. “Thanks for dropping me off today. You’re the best.”
Carina smile softened, becoming genuine, “No problem darling, let’s get you to work.”
The drive to the station was a blur. The brunette focused intently on the road, forcing herself to ignore the pounding in her head and the chills running down her spine. The last thing she wanted was for Maya to notice her lack of enthusiasm so she made sure to keep nodding along as the blonde talked happily about how she was going to finally get B shift to clean up their side of the fridge.
When they finally arrived, Carina pulled up alongside the curb and leaned over and to give Maya a lingering kiss. “See you at five?” The blonde asked as she reached down to grab her backpack.
Carina nodded, managing a weak smile, “Of course, I’ll be here. Have a great day, love.” She cleared her throat a little too sharply, bringing her hand to touch the front of her neck as she winced.
Maya gave her a quick wave before hurrying into the building. Carina watched her go, her smile fading as soon as her wife was out of sight. She let out a shuddering breath, finally letting out several sneezes she’d only just managed to hold back before sniffling miserably and resting her head against the steering wheel. This sucked.
Carina sniffled for another few minutes before taking a deep breath. She couldn’t stay here, god forbid any of the other firefighters see her. She hated people knowing when she was ill. After muffling a painful sounding cough into her elbow, she straightened herself up before pulling out of the parking lot.
Originally, she had planned to be productive today. Handle a few bits of paperwork for the station’s clinic, run some errands, maybe grab a greek salad from that place she liked a few blocks away. But now, all Carina wanted to do now was go home, to change out of these uncomfortably clothes and crawl back under a blanket. She hated this. She hardly got ill to begin with, but when she did it always seemed to hit her hard.
By the time she pulled into the driveway, the poor brunette could hardly keep her eyes open. It was some miracle that she managed to stumble to the door in one piece. Finally inside and away from prying eyes and the pressure to maintain standards, Carina let herself relax.
The first thing she did was head straight back to the bedroom, stripping off her clothes as she did so. She knew she was wasting energy but staying in her current outfit just wasn’t an option. Instead she dug around in Maya’s side of the wardrobe and pulled out one of her old t-shirts, pulling the cool fabric over her head. Accompanying the shirt, she picked out a pair of shorts and slid her legs into them, shivering slightly as chills ran over her exposed skin.
Maybe these clothes were a little too light, she thought and grabbed Maya’s thick hoodie and pulled it around her arms. That was better. She looked at herself in the mirror for a moment, debating on whether to take her make up off by a wave of dizziness had her gripping their wooden dressing table for support. Make-up could wait, she needed to lay down for a bit.
Coughing miserably into the sleeve of her borrowed sweater, Carina grabbed the fluffy throw blanket which sat neatly across their bed before stealing the box of tissues from the bathroom. Making her way out to the living room, she led down and curled up on the sofa, her knees up to her chest and she closed her eyes.
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Maya glanced at her watch for what felt like the hundredth time. It was already five fifteen, and there was still no sign of Carina. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other as she pulled out her phone. She called her but the line went straight to voicemail, not even ringing so she presumed it was out of battery…or switched off.
It wasn’t like her girlfriend to be late. She was a very punctual person… well, when it came down to her anyway. Sure Carina could sometimes get caught up in things but she’d never been late when it came to her.
The sound of footsteps behind her caught the blonde’s attention and looked over her shoulder to see Andy walking out of the building, pulling on her coat.
“Hey Mai, what you doing waiting out here, it’s bloody freezing out here.” Her friendly voice called out as she dug her hands into the pockets of her coat.
“I was just waiting for Carina,” Maya voice trailed off as she replied, “I don’t quite know where she is.”
Andy frowned a little, “That’s not like her. She’s always early to collect you.”
The blonde nodded in agreement, “I know, I’m a little worried about her now.” She fidgeted with her hands again before she felt Andy rest her hands on top of them before bringing an arm around her shoulder to ground her.
“How about I drop you back home, it’s too cold to be loitering about and I’m headed that way anyway.” She offered warmly, not taking no for an answer as she guided her friend towards her car.
“Are you sure- I’m really grateful, thank you.” Maya sighed with relief.
The drive home was filled with Andy’s rant about the nerve of B shift, they hadn’t been exactly welcoming. Meanwhile Maya could barely concentrate. Her mind was racing with scenarios, each more worrying than the last. By the time they pulled into their neighbourhood, she was practically vibrating with anxiety.
The two parked up and Andy walked her up the door. Maya searched around in her bag for a moment before realising she’d left her key on the hook inside - Carina always had a key on her usually. Instead, she gritted her teeth and knocked on the door loudly, hoping that her wife was home. Sure the car was there but she knew Carina was meant to be getting groceries today and she often liked to walk there and cut through the park.
Inside, the loud echo of the knock fulled a tired brunette out of her feverish sleep. She sat up groggily, a little confused before remembering where she was.
She tried to call out to let whoever was at the door know she was coming but her throat was too dry to produce a sound. Woozily standing up, the blanket she’d been cuddled in trailing behind her before falling to the floor in a heap as she made her way to the door.
“If she’s not in then you’re welcome to wait at mine for a little bit. She’s probably just got caught up in things.“ Andy began to think of solutions but a clatter of keys falling to the ground inside stopped her, “Oh, she is in! There we go.”
Maya shrugged, “I’m sure she just forgot where she left the keys and had to look for them.”
But nothing could have prepared either of them for what came next. After some fumbling with the lock and what she’d presumed was a muttered curse between a few coughs, the door swung open. Slowly revealing a pale Carina leaning on the frame for support.
Her hair was a mess from having been slept on, but what surprised Maya most was her outfit, in the whole team of dating Carina, she’d never known her to wear her clothes. Sure she’d occasionally steal a sweater or two but this was on another level and quiet frankly she was adorable even with the red, running nose and glassy eyes.
Over the hours she’d sweated most of her makeup off in her sleep apparently, leaving the brunette with smudged eyeliner, dark circles beneath her eyes and her forehead sheened with a sweaty glow. Carina coughed again, the sound deeper and more painful this time.
It took Carina a moment to realise what had happened. Shit! She had been meant to pick Maya up! Damn it!
Her eyes widened with the realisation, she tried to speak but her words cracked and caught in her throat, coming out as a quiet, sore rasp, “Mai’! I’m so sorry-“
“Carina? Oh my god, sweetheart! Look at you!”Maya cut off her ramblings as she worriedly eyed over her wife’s sickly appearance, “My poor baby, you sound awful, shh, don’t start apologising, you have nothing to be sorry for.”
“I forgot-“ Carina tried again but Maya was quick to interrupt again.
“No, no, none of that,” She murmured reassuringly, mumbling a pitiful blessing when her girlfriend turned away to sneeze unexpectedly loudly into a crumpled tissue, “Come here love,” Maya held her hand up to Carina’s forehead, hovering in front of it for a moment before the brunette subtly nodded her approval.
She pressed her cool hand against her forehead, it was obvious from the heat radiating from her that was she running a temperature, “Sweetie, you’re burning up. Let’s get you back inside.” The blonde gently ushered her to go and sit back down before turning to Andy - she’d taken a few steps back from the door to give them some privacy.
“Thank you so much for dropping me off.” She smiled gratefully.
Andy nodded, reaching over to squeeze her shoulder reassuringly, “It’s not a problem at all, you go take care of your girl.”
“I will do, thank you again.” Maya waved, watching her manager begin to walk away before closing the door behind herself.
Making her way to the living room, she picked up the blanket which had still been strewn on the floor and pulled it around Carina’s shoulders as she came to her side, “You’re not feeling very well.” She stated, less of an accusation and more of a sympathetic statement.
Carina simply nodded, sniffling as she reached for a tissue to muffle another damp sneeze into before uttering a croaky, “Excuse me.”
Maya felt her heart melt a little at the sight of her wife so miserable and ill, “Bless you darling.” She cupped her flushed cheeks gently, “Have you been like this all day?”
Carina nodded weakly, her eyes heavy with fatigue. "I didn't want to worry you," She whispered, her voice barely audible, “Or be a burden.”
"Shh, love, you know could never, ever be a bother to me,” Maya murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to Carina’s forehead. She could feel the feverish heat against her lips, “Have you taken any medicine or anything?” She looked around at the stray tissues which lay about around the sofa.
Carina shook her head, “I fell asleep before I took any.” She mumbled, looking up in a feverish confusion as she watched Maya wander away before returning a few moments later with some cotton pads and micellar water.
“May I?” Maya crouched down to be at her level before gently beginning to wipe away the remnants of her makeup. She also carefully untangled her hair the best she could, gently doing it up into a more manageable bun with one of her scrunchie bobbles, “That must feel a little better, hm?”
“You’re amazing.” Carina croaked, a small smile appearing on her face as Maya continued to dote over her. She hadn’t ever experienced anything like this nothing, she’d never felt so loved, so cared for. Feverish tears threatened to well up in her eyes but she sniffled and fought them back.
The blondes’ eyebrows crinkled a little at Maya’s slightly teary eyes, “You okay baby?”
“Never better.” Carina sniffled again, giving her a tired but clearly appreciative look.
“Good, let’s get you to bed and then we’ll find you some medicine.” Maya returned the smile and wrapped an arm around her wife’s waist to support her as she stood, “We’ll have you feeling better in no time.”
