I sent the greys/s19 ask and loved your thoughts. Thanks so much for answering. You said a lot of things I agree with, especially about Shonda’s writing and the defining love at the heart of Greys. Shonda has such a distinct, inimitable style and it’s super compelling and just fun. Her dialogue is impeccable. She’s also amazing at balancing ensembles. That plus the acting ability of the cast made magic. Just a strike of lightning with cast, writing and chemistry. It’s so evident in s9-11 when she’s writing less and the plots get stale and the dialog cliche.

Also agree with s19 not having a defining love story. I always thought Andy and Ryan should’ve been the great love story, at least for the first few seasons. And it felt like they were setting it up in the lead up to his death but obviously that was only to make it hurt more. I also didn’t mind Jack and Maya (I know, sacrilege lol) at first but s3 ruined them for me. In a way marina ended up being that big lovestory but also not really because lesbian couples, even femme white ones, don’t have the same mass appeal. But yeah no other love story really stuck. Or friendships other than Vic & Travis who deserved more than comedic relief. I really loved Maya and Andy in s1/2 and Andy herself is what drew me to the show but s3 dropped the camaraderie and fun and became a melodramatic angst fest. Which isn’t necessarily bad, but it was so over the top all the time. Remember the finale (?) episode with the robbery, stabbing and Car crash and death? It all happened back to back lol. I also agree that it being a spin-off didn’t help because people were adamantly against it because of that from the start because of all the crossovers. Still, like you I wonder how it would’ve turned out if Stacy McKee had stayed on for the full run. She seemed to have a lighter touch with writing (and she’s written some of my favourite greys episodes) whereas the seasons without her seemed like they’d never heard of subtlety lol.

Ultimately, Station 19 set itself up as the ensemble being the great love story. What they had you rooting for at the beginning was the team, the family, the fact that they all had each others' backs. But they didn't keep that as the centrepiece, and so the formula started to shatter.

And how do you keep viewers from episode 1 until your finale? You give them something to root for. A viewer needs to finish a pilot episode (or a second episode, sometimes...) with something they are looking forward to seeing happen. Some whiff of romance, budding friendship, accomplishment... Something they can predict as a possible or probable outcome.

For so many shows, it's the romance: Booth & Brennan on Bones, Sydney & Vaughn on Alias, Ross & Rachel on Friends, Luke & Lorelai on Gilmore Girls, Janine & Gregory on Abbott Elementary... every single one of those couples are hinted at in the pilot episode.

For others, it's a goal: building a park on the empty lot in Parks & Recreation, getting to the people who might be able to help create a cure in The Last of Us (season 1), creating a successful restaurant in The Bear, solving the case in Vigil (I didn't guess there was a couple to root for until after the pilot), etc, etc.

And then, beyond that, there's the found family stuff: Brassic, Futurama, Leverage (I'm basing this purely off gifs I've seen on my dash), Happy Endings, Parenthood (but they're totally all related), Private Practice (sort of?), etc... Station 19 started itself as one of these and probably would've been more successful if it'd stuck to it.

Grey's Anatomy was absolutely a strike of lightning. But it was also a factor of great cast, extremely talented writer and creator, a great crew, enough budget... it takes a lot to make a good TV show. I wish networks still recognized that and were more willing to put the time and money into making it possible. I, for one, am getting sick of the quick-and-ditch formula of streaming (and frankly, my career is, too).

Just want to share my love for Maya and Carina because I have one to talk about it, none of my friends watch S19. I just love how they went from a dream couple to a kind of toxic couple? Idk if I can say that. But they just worked through all the shit. Because there was love. So much love. This ship is so real to me…we get to see the incredibly low points and we get to see the hard work. I know it’s not always like that in the real life but I think they show a good example for everybody: love is not “enough”, you have to work very-very hard for a relationship. And at the end of their road on the show we got a mature dream couple. Kudos to the writers and to Danielle and Stefania. (#iwantamarinaspinoff)

I'm not gonna lie, I haven't watched the last season of Station 19 bc I'm weird like that and I know I'm going to be sad there's not going to be another season of one of my favorite TV couples.

But deadass though, it's good to see a couple fight and work to trust each other and be forced to both take a step back in order to stay together. You don’t really see that on TV, and I think the actresses and the writers did a good job with that.

Also, if you or anyone wants to pretty much force me to watch the last season of Station 19, let me know cause sometimes I need that pressure to finish lmao
