IRON SAVIOR
Interview Piet Sielck by Daniel Hinds
(conducted May 1999)
Piet Sielck may not be a household name quite yet, but he has been involved in the metal scene since the late 70s. Joining Kai Hansen in an early version of Helloween, he dropped out of the music scene for a while, recently resurfacing with the stunning Iron Savior not long ago. Quickly following up that success with the equally impressive Unification album, Iron Savior are quickly establishing themselves as one of the world's leaders of top-notch melodic speed metal.
Taking a break from his work on the next album, Piet was kind enough to answer a few questions for me...
Could you give me a run-down on what you did between the time you worked with Kai before Helloween and when you put together Iron Savior? Since 1987 I worked as a sound engineer and producer. I worked with bands like Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Saxon, Uriah Heep, Domain, lots of not so well known acts and of course Gamma Ray.
What was the genesis of the name Iron Savior in the first place? In our teenager days we had a song with that title. I always liked the name, so 15 years later I made a new song being inspired by those old times of my life. Since it was the first song I really finished up for the IS#1 album and I wanted people to understand instantly what this band is about I choose the name Iron Savior.
What has inspired the sci-fi themes of the two Iron Savior albums? All the Star Wars movies, all the Star Trek movies and TV shows and a probably in the US unknown German sci-fi story called Perry Rhodan. It appears weekly and gives you 64 pages. The series is on since the early sixties and by now they must have reached their two thousands edition.
The story-line on both Iron Savior albums is pretty elaborate. Have you done any or thought about doing any serious fiction writing (short stories or a novel maybe?) The whole story started as a novel I wanted to write. When I was working with Blind Guardian in Denmark on their Imaginations...album I usually worked at night with quite decent spare time in the afternoons. To fill this time I started writing this IS story, but I never finished more then 50 pages…But this was or still is the basis of all what is happening on the two albums storywise.
Who are some of your favorite authors? Frank Herbert's Dune is simply the best!
The production on Unification is excellent. Could you tell me a bit about how the whole recording process went? Somehow we never had any major problems. All of the material was recorded and mixed on Pro Tools, a Mac based harddisc recording platform. I just love this system. Except for the drums and the bass guitar (which were recorded in a different studio) all the stuff was put down in my little place. We choose a different recording situation for the drums and the bass because we needed a studio with a big and nice sounding recording room. But after that no super big recording facilities are needed anymore so we moved back to my place. This is the real cool side about this computer systems. Wherever you put them up you can do state of the art recordings then load everything in your car and go some place else. But also performing the song as a band who has been on tour together made the production really tight and punchy. I gave the musicians a lot of freedom how to perform their instrument for the simple reason that it is THEIR and not my instrument. This was a great way to work.
What is the typical creative process behind an Iron Savior song? Usually everything starts with a guitar riff. This decides about the general attitude of the song. Weather it's gonna be aggressive or more melodic. After that I try to think of a good chorus, because this is the most important part of a song. After that I come up with verse and a bridge. If the song is still working and I am getting gooseskin it can stay. If not…do it again, Sam.
Do you ever come up with material that you like but doesn't quite fit the Iron Savior sound? Yes and no. Somehow if I like something I was always able to make it fit to IS. I really hate to be restricted in that matter. If I like it, it stays. It then will automatically become IS like.
I like the fact that Iron Savior's music is very melodic yet retains plenty of speed and heaviness, too. Is it important to you to have that balance? Yes, indeed. I hate to be to linear. In my music I always want to create a good balance of everything I like. Even with ten "killer songs" it would get quite boring if they were all in the same speed for my taste. I definitely try to avoid this.
Glad to see the cover of "Neon Knights" - so many people overlook the Dio-era of Sabbath and it is my favorite. What inspired you to cover that particular track? I have to admit, that I never was a big Sabbath fan. I always had problems with Ozzy's voice. But when I heard that Dio joined the band I went to the record shop and bought the album right away. When I later on at home listened to the first track, I knew instantly, that I' just bought myself a killer album. Together with "Heaven and Hell" "Neon Knights" always was my favorite track of the Sabbath/Dio era.
How did you come up with the idea for the band competition to have a track included on Unification? At first we just had the idea to work with local bands to open the show, then we thought about turning it into a band-battle and give this price of releasing one track on our next CD. The general idea behind it was, to give young and unsigned bands a chance to promote themselves in a way, which usually would not be possible for them. In our early days we would have loved a thing like this…
How did your last tour go? Very well, even though Kai couldn't come with us. We got lots of positive reactions and the people really liked our show. I was very surprised about the fact, that people accepted IS without Kai just as well as with Kai. But for our next tour in August or September Kai will be with us again since he then has finished up all his G-Ray work.
What kind of a set-list do you play live? A good mixture of the first and the second album. Atlantis Falling, Iron Savior, Brave new World, Riding on Fire, Watcher in the Sky, For the World, Coming Home, Brothers, Starborn, Eye to Eye, Mind over Matter, Deadly Sleep, Prisoner of the Void, The Battle, Unchained and some surprise tracks…
In almost every photo I've seen of Iron Savior, the band is smiling and seems to be enjoying themselves - not the usual overly serious or pissed-off metal look. Is that intentional or just coincidence? Well, that's just the way we are. Music is fun and we enjoy ourselves very much when we perform music, so it's quite natural to see us most of the time with a big grin in our faces. We do take our performance very serious but the fun factor for IS is very important. Posing and looking mean is also OK but we just prefer a natural presentation since we don't have to act.
Since you seem to be skilled at a number of instruments, I am curious which one is your favorite to play? Why? Guitar and Vocals. I always saw myself as a guitarist and vocalist. I just learned to do some keyboards because it's quite useful for the composing process. As a guitarist I am able to play a bass guitar, but a real bass player still is a different thing. He really has a different attitude in playing HIS instrument. So I am quite happy, that I not longer have to do it by myself.
How did you first hook up with Blind Guardian? When I was working on the first G-ray CD Kai told me about a studio guy who wanted to move his studio to Hamburg, my home town. So I visited him and we agreed that I will assist him with his upcoming production. The guy was Kalle Trapp and the production was BG Tales from the Twilightworld. So I recorded all of the guitars for this thing, all the keyboards and also did all the backing choirs (together with Rolf Köhler and Hacky Hackmann). During the production we really started liking each other and somehow I became the guitar/keyboard/choir man for BG.
Is the climate for metal in Germany better these days than in the past or not? Do you guys get much radio or video airplay? The climate is a lot better than it used to be three years ago, but still HM is a very specific music with a very specific market. It is quite popular but not in terms like Phil Collins or Michael Jackson. Also the radio situation in Germany is quite different from the US. Somehow ALL stations broadcast the same, boring mainstream stuff. Top 40 and that's it. They're all afraid to loose their listeners and the advertising money when the play non-mainstream stuff. That also goes for TV . There's only ONE show, that plays HM stuff. So we are still hoping that the maker of all these programs will understand, that HM has come back to the peoples mind…
What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of music? Surfing, frensh billiards, books, movies, traveling, having a private live with my family and meet friends.

“Mommy?”
“Yes, baby doll?” You questioned as you stacked the last dish into the drying rack and dried off your hands.
“How come daddy carries sissy around, but you won’t let him carry me?”
You chuckled softly as you crouched down to her height, “And how old are you?”
“Six.”
“And how old is Sofía?”
She scrunched up her nose, “Two.”
“Do you remember what I told you about daddy’s back?” You arched a brow, “You’re too big for him to pick up.”
Josie sighed heavily, letting her shoulders sag. “But why does daddy have a bad back? Can’t he get it fixed?”
You reached out and brushed her hair away from her cheek, rubbing your thumb over her skin there. “A long time ago, both of us weren’t very kind to our bodies.
“Like when you,” She dropped her voice low and whispered conspiratorially, “got shot?” Josie questioned, pointing at your leg.
“Exactly like that.” You nodded, subconsciously rubbing at the scar on your leg. The one she had seen that prompted that discussion.
“Did daddy get shot?”
“No.”
“Then why does he have a bad back?” Josie pressed, crossing her arms across her chest. “It’s not fair that he carries Sofía around.”
“Sofía is still little, sweetheart.” Your brows rose upwards as you stared at her. “Youve gotten too tall.” You still couldn’t believe she’d sprouted up so much already. She was right at your hip now.
She pouted, “But what if daddy loves Sofía more because he can carry her around?”
Oh, the things children worried about. You stood back up, glancing out the window and watching where Javier was playing with Sofía outside with Stevie.
“Come here,” You held your hand out to Josie, guiding her over to the kitchen table and sitting down beside her. “You may never tell your sister this.”
Josie’s eyes widened, “Pinky promise!” She said as she held up her hand with her pinky extended.
You laughed, hooking your finger around hers. “Now that you’ve promised, I can let you in on a little secret. I know this may be shocking news JoJo, but you are your daddy’s favorite.” You told her, petting your hand over her head of soft curls. “That’s not to say that he doesn’t love Sofía, but you are always going to be his baby. He might not be able to carry you around the house like he used to, but that doesn’t change anything.”
“Really?” She asked enthusiastically, covering her mouth and giggling.
“Yes, really.” You tapped your finger against her nose. “So even when you’re big and grown and have a family of your own… you’re going to be his baby girl.”
“I’m almost big and grown now!” She sat up a little taller then.
“Not quite.” You winked at her, sinking back in your chair. “You’re still my baby too.”
“Who do you love most, mommy?”
You pursed your lips thoughtfully, “Stevie.”
“Mommy!”
“You asked!” You laughed, shaking your head. “Honestly, I love all of you weirdos equally.” Javier was the one that would always help JoJo get away with anything and everything. And you had a feeling the same wouldn’t be said for Sofía.
Josie opened her mouth to say something, but the backdoor swept open and Stevie came bounding in with Sofía chasing after her and Javier lagging behind them.
“JoJo, I thought you were coming back out to play.” He remarked, rubbing at the back of his neck.
“Mommy and I were having a big girl talk.”
He arched a brow and looked towards you then, “Oh?”
You shrugged, “It was something like that.” You turned towards Josie then as she climbed off the chair. “Why don’t you and Sofía go play in your room until lunch?”
“Okay.” Josie grinned and wiggled her pinky at you, before taking Sofía by the hand and heading down the hallway.
“And what was that about?” Javier questioned, wincing a little as he leaned down to press a kiss to your forehead.
“Sorry, babe. I pinky promised our daughter.” You pushed the chair back and rose to your feet, holding his gaze. “Did you hurt yourself?”
“A little.” He pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek. “Stevie got a little rambunctious and got me good while I was bending down.”
You grimaced, reaching out and brushing your fingers over his cheek. “We can’t have any fun next week if you’re broken, Javi.”
“Trust me, I know.” He huffed, shaking his head. “Are things good with Josie?”
“Yeah,” You nodded. “She was just worried about where she stands in the ranking.”
“Ranking?” He arched a brow.
“I pinky promised her.” You ran a finger down the length of his nose, before tapping it against his lips. “How about a glass of water and some Tylenol?”
“Keeping secrets already. JoJo really is six going on sixteen.” Javier chuckled as he sat down in your seat, stretching out his back.
“One of us has to be the secret keeper in the family.” You gave him a look as you moved to the sink and filled up a glass for him. “And we both know that’s not you.”
Javier snorted, “I’ve kept one secret under wraps for a year.”
“Which is impressive.” You taunted.
“And in Colombia.”
You grabbed the Tylenol out of the cupboard and sat the bottle and the glass of water down in front of him. “Touché.”
Javier rolled his eyes as he popped the lid off the Tylenol and tossed two pills into his mouth, washing them down with the water. “I’m just saying, baby… I can keep a secret.”
“For the most part.” You played your fingers through his hair, trailing them back to toy with the hair at the nape of his neck. “Alright, I’ll tell you… Josie was worried that Sofía had surpassed her. She thought that because Sofia’s little and easy to carry around, that you didn’t love her as much as you used to.”
“Really?” Javier shook his head. “Look, I’m not playing favorites, but it is Josie.”
“Maybe take her out for some ice cream before we leave.” You suggested, chewing on your bottom lip. “She’s a smart cookie.”
He curled his arm around your upper thighs, pulling you towards him. “Just like her mother.”
You ran your hand over the width of his shoulders, “Flattery will get you everywhere. You should’ve seen how worried she was. The things kids stress about.”
Javier chuckled, rubbing his thumb over your leg where his hand was curled. “I might take her and Stevie to the beach tomorrow, then to the boardwalk for ice cream.”
“I bet she’d love that.” You smiled down at him. Sofía and I will hold down the fort. Maybe watch Mulan for the hundredth time.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time.” He gave your leg three short squeezes. “You looking forward to next weekend?”
“I am,” You nodded as you stepped out of his hold, “It’ll be nice to have a few days to ourselves.”
“I’m looking forward to sleeping in.” Javier remarked with a smirk as you shot him a look. “What?”
“You are getting old.” You clicked your tongue against your teeth. “I didn’t think I’d live to see the day that Javier Peña would be more inclined to sleep in than—“ You glanced down the hall to make sure you still heard plenty of sound coming from the girls. “— fuck his wife.”
“Did I say I wasn’t looking forward to that aspect of our getaway?” His brows rose upwards. “I don’t think I did.”
“It was implied.” You retorted with a grin. “I see how it is.”
Despite his back, Javier made short work of the distance between the two of you as he crowded close to you. Effectively trapping you between him and the kitchen counter. “Are you sure that is what the implication was?” He questioned, his lips close to yours. “Or perhaps I’m going to keep you up all night and we will have to sleep in.”
Your lips parted as you let out a shaky exhale, leaning into him. “That’s the alternative I’m looking forward to.” You whispered.
Javier cradled your cheek as he leaned in and kissed you.
You curled your fingers around the back of his neck and chased after his lips as he pulled back, “Bring this energy to next weekend.” You told him, your gaze flickering between his eyes and his lips.
“I plan on it.”
“Mommy?”
Shit.
Javier was quick to step away from you and busy himself with drying off the dishes that were drying in the rack.
“What’s up, babydoll?l
“Sofía is stinky.”
“Ah,” Your hands went to your hips. “I guess she was having a little too much fun.” You turned back towards Javier, giving a little head nod towards Josie, before you started towards the hall.
“Hey, princesa.”
“Yes, daddy?” Josie questioned with her sweetest voice.
“Think you have time in your busy schedule to go to the beach with me tomorrow?”
“Really?”
“Yeah!” Javier clapped his hands together. “Just you and me.”
“Can we get ice cream?”
“Of course.”
“That sounds like the best day ever!”
“I thought you’d like the sound of that.” Javier chuckled, as you stepped out of earshot and into Josie’s bedroom.
Sofía toddled towards you, grinning from ear-to-ear.
You scrunched up your nose, “You are far too happy to be that smelly, kiddo.” You scooped her up and headed for the nursery to handle the situation.
There was no doubt that both of you loved the girls equally, but you also knew you both had your favorites. Despite everything that had led up to and followed Sofía’s birth — there was something about her endearingly grumpy personality that made you love her just a little more.

Another Amazing Kickstarter (Digital Preservation of Edwin Fox, a very old merchant ship by Hennie van der Merwe and 3D Scans Team —Kickstarter) has been published on http://crowdmonsters.com/new-kickstarters/digital-preservation-of-edwin-fox-a-very-old-merchant-ship-by-hennie-van-der-merwe-and-3d-scans-team-kickstarter/
A NEW KICKSTARTER IS LAUNCHED:
Edwin Fox sailing vessel.
The Edwin Fox is a vessel of great cultural and historical value to New Zealand but she has also played a significant global logistical role. Built in Sulkea in the Ganges region of India in 1853 by shipbuilder Thomas Reeves, it has served as a troop transport, an immigrant and a cargo ship.
With a length of 48 m and beam of 9, she is the world’s oldest surviving merchant ship and the only surviving ship that transported convicts to Australia and settlers to Australia and New Zealand. She is now dry-docked at the Edwin Fox Maritime Museum at Picton in New Zealand.
Some interesting facts:
On her maiden voyage from India to the UK she carried 10 passengers and general cargo.
In 1854 she was commandeered as troop transport for the Crimean War and on her first voyage she carried 15 officers and 481 men from Calais (after being waved off by Napoleon) to Bomarsund in the Baltic Sea. (Florence Nightingale likely was a passenger on one return trip) After several voyages at the end of the war she was re-fitted to carry general cargo and passengers in 1856.
On 11 August 1858 the Fox left Gravesend with 280 prisoners and 67 Prison Guards (with their families) onboard and arrived at the Swan River in Australia on 22 November with the addition of 3 babies born to wives of the guards.
On 14 February 1860 she set sail from for Bombay from London with a general cargo which included a substantial quantity of Taylor Walker’s India Pale Ale. Several alcohol laden voyages followed earning her the nick name “Booze Barge”
The first migrants to New Zealand on the Fox embarked at the Blackwall Depot in London on 25 January 1873. 95 Passengers were bound for Otago and a similar number for Canterbury. After experiencing a severe storm she ended up in Brest on the 5 February. 23 of the passengers decided they had enough and the after repairs the Fox cleared Brest on 5 March 1873 and arrived in Lyttleton Harbour on 27 June 1873.
The advent of steam powered vessels brought an end to the era of trade by sailing ships and the Fox underwent a major refit in London to convert her to a refrigeration vessel. Her last voyage under her own power started 25 June 1885 when she left London for Otago where she arrived 17 October 1885. After serving in many ports as a refrigeration vessel she was finally towed to Picton in January 1897 where she served in this role until June 1900. During this period she broke a record by freezing 12000 carcasses (to be exported to London) in 43 days.
The Fox lashed to a steamer unloading frozen carcasses.
The completion of a freezing works just west of Picton saw the Fox being stripped of the refrigeration plant and turned into a coal hulk to store coal for the new freezing works.. She served in this role for the next 50 years and was finally de-registered on 29 October 1953.
The Edwin Fox Restoration Society was formed in May 1965. Their initial campaign to have the vessel restored ultimately failed but they were the driving force behind a local effort to have her cleaned out, re-floated and finally towed to Shakespeare Bay where she remained for 19 years and was effectively shipwrecked.
In 1980, volunteers managed to re-float and tow her into Picton Harbour where a mooring was found.
The current Edwin Fox museum was opened in 1990 facilitated by grants of $50 000 from both the NZ Government as well as the Picton Pakeke Lions. In 1993 the centre won an award for Historic/Cultural/Arts and Crafts Visitor attraction and attracts around 10 000 visitors a year.
All efforts to rebuild the vessel eventually petered out and there was concern that she would not stay afloat indefinitely. On the 18 May1999 the Edwin Fox was pushed into a custom built dry-dock with financial assistance from various sources such as The Lotteries Board,Marlborough District Council, Canterbury Community Trust, Port Marlborough and the Picton Lions.

New Zealand is rich in natural and cultural heritage and artefacts. Using 3D scanning is the only safeguard against total loss or damage through natural disasters such as earthquakes, fire and floods. The availability of 3D models is beneficial to learning institutes, researchers and the public on a global basis.
Due to financial constraints the New Zealand organisations that are responsible for the traditional preservation of these items currently do not have the resources to embark on a project of this nature to any significant extent.
In recent years a large number of precious historical buildings, monuments, artefacts and specimens have been at least partially destroyed through natural as well as human made disasters.
3D modelling is the ideal technique for safeguarding the most important attributes of collections with external visual appearance, dimensional accuracy and the ability to re-construct using either traditional or more high tech methods like 3 D printing. As an added bonus the models are stored off premises and can easily be made available to any number of interested parties.
The benefits of 3D modelling include:
§ Being able to replicate objects through 3D printing or even traditional model building.
§ Allowing high accuracy measurements to be made directly on the model.
§ Comparing objects of similar nature easily.
§ As a non-contact, non-invasive technology with extremely low risk of damage to objects.
§ Offering an exciting visual impact that can greatly enhance the learning experience of students and create more public awareness.
§ Enabling museums to give public visual access to artefacts not on display for reasons related to security, fragility, lack of space, etc.
§ Allowing the custodian or owner of the object to retain full control over access to models.
§ Allowing researchers the potential of risk-free access to material of interest on a global scale
New Zealand straddles the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates and as a result experiences frequent earthquakes. The most recent of significance struck the top of the South Island (Kaikoura on Nov 14 2016) and caused considerable damage to infrastructure. The ferry terminal in Picton (about 100m away from the Edwin Fox Museum) suffered minor damage during this quake and caused minor disruption to the Ferry services. The Edwin Fox faces a very real risk of being severely damaged in the occurrence of a major event.
The seabed lifted by about a meter in Kaikoura after the earthquake. Should this happen in Picton the Edwin Fox is likely to topple from her props and suffer extensive damage.
On 17 & 18 December 2016 the team from 3D Scans scanned the Edwin Fox as well as certain items on display in the museum.
The team used a Faro Scene Laser Scanner to capture around 48 scans as well as Nikon D3S, Nikon D800 and Nikon 7200 cameras to take just over 7700 high resolution photographs. Point cloud generation was done separately for the interior, exterior and loose parts using both scans as well as photographs in Reality Capture software. The raw data created in Reality Capture software for both interior and exterior of the vessel consists of more than 380million polygons each.
The point cloud data was converted to polygonal meshes, which has undergone preliminary clean-up and were assembled to create one data set for both interior as well as exterior of the vessel.
Polygonal meshes assembled in Zbrush software to form exterior of the vessel.
The current work involves further cleaning up, removing unwanted objects and restoring obscured portions of the polygonal meshes.
Work in progress for cleaning up the interior of the vessel. The top image shows initial cleaning up competed whilst the bottom one shows the same segment after restoration.
As the cleaning up and restoration process is finalised, the model will be textured and optimised for being uploaded and viewed online on a 3D platform from either personal computers or smartphones. The ultimate goal in the restoration process is to digitally preserve all the original timber of the vessel in a highly detailed model which will potentially be available for anyone to enjoy and explore online from any part of the wolrd.
Any funds received in excess of our project goal will be applied towards completion of the next stages which are:
A full digital reconstruction of the vessel to one of its original sailing states, a cinematic sequence and a VR experience.
All the models created as well as the raw data will eventually be the property of the Edwin Fox Society.
We have contributed about NZ$10 000 and more than 500 man hours to date and really need your support to bring this project to fruition.
