Mystery Inc. (2025) “We’ve got some work to do now”

Happy new year, y’all. Worked on this for the past few days and I’m glad that I got it done in time to ring in 2025 with a modern Scooby gang. And here, I’ve written out a few thoughts on how that might go. Those that know me and have seen my art before will see that I am repeating myself (or just ripping off another post I did wholesale), but I digress.

If and when Warner Bros. actually decides to do a more mature and darker tv adaptation, drawing from what Mystery Incorporated did before, I had the thought that the Scooby gang wouldn’t necessarily go the route of literal supernatural mysteries or investigations, or at least not the majority of the time. I never caught up with the second season of Mystery Incorporated, but I do like the idea that they eased into the more paranormal events rather than doing it up front. I think narratively in a newer adaptation, they would solve more serious crimes that had gone cold from police investigations, and that would just so happen to involve masked criminals or “paranormal” circumstances to be uncovered.

Say they solve mysteries such as murders, disappearances, kidnapping, or the like, and in essence the gang becomes a real service to their community in taking up cases that would have otherwise gone ignored and forgotten. That may sound dark, but if the 90s movies like On Zombie Island and Witch’s Ghost, or Mystery Incorporated taught us anything, is that under the right hand you can strike a balance between sincerity and intensity. The franchise itself has always had to strike a balance between fear and absurdity, and creators have gotten away with a lot more than what one would expect from something as goofy as Scooby Doo (they do often team up with Batman, after all).

The gang can still uncover other crimes, like robbery, smuggling, counterfeiting, all the usual Scooby crimes, of course, but underlining it with the consequences of those affected might give each case more depth. Conceptually, I think the driving purpose in the gang’s mission needs to emphasize a foundation of not only compassion, but also pursuing justice.

In the spirit of the Scooby gang, I guess, I’ll take with me the ideal of helping others against bad actors who use deceit and intimidation to disenfranchise and victimize others. Sticking close to my friends and figuring out what the real problem is, unmasking the real villains in our lives. Overall, if a new, more mature adaptation can teach us anything, is the importance of skepticism and never losing sight that the scariest monsters are the ones we create ourselves. That maybe we don’t always see the clear picture, and that sometimes, if not always, the explanation can be elusive, but it’s never non-existent.

being announced on november 13 2022 for episode EIGHTY SEVEN of riptide . on the same day , you wrote a post about wanting us the viewers feel comfortable , REPRESENTED , and respected . lizzie’s skin colour absolutely changes her character because she could be strong WOC rep .

now lesbian lizzie has been a very strong headcanon throughout the community for a very long time (i’m going to ignore pistolwhip’s influence for a second this is just about lizzie) due to the extreme lack of lesbian or even sapphic rep in jrwi as an entire podcast .

you yourself stated you want all to feel represented in your campaign . and yet whenever you’re asked about lizzie’s sexuality you brush it off and say “it doesn’t matter” maybe to You but it very much matters to lesbian jrwitwt who are often left grasping at crumbs and battling

intense lesbiphobia (not lesbophobia 😉🥂) from the community in general . a canonical lesbian would be big for lesbian fans !! we love and adore lizzie as a character and we would love to see really ANYTHING about her canonized but it’s always silence .

now back to pistolwhip . i can understand the resistance to making them canon as it could take away from the action of the story (im really trying to see the other side here i’m trying) however the way you constantly dismiss the ship

but still milking fans for fan service… what happened to "u guys dont want pistolwhip" when lizzie called jay sunshine. or when lizzie winked at jay and told her to "be safe"? the way you constantly insists that "you guys dont want this to happen" while simultaneously egging

fans on is tiring for all involved TLDR : canonize lizzie’s skin tone and stick to it . if she’s white , say it. the lack of canonization while being upset fans “take the character and say i’m wrong” is a weird thing to get angry about considering little about lizzie is canon

An anon asks about what Grizzly had said about a disabled character in PD, also adding in their own notes about Drey's disability. To summise their notes: it's surprising Drey is the only disabled character in Riptide; his diability is primarily a punchline for jokes; Drey is treated as being unfit to fight due to his disability, which can easily be remedied in fantasy through use of mobility aids that can also be altered to make for cool magical weapons. I myself would like to note that Chip has a prosthetic finger, which makes this choice even more strange.

To summise the response: meeting a former villain who's now a wheelchair user, the characters ask what happened; Dakota (played by Grizzly) reacted extremely poorly and said to their face they, "deserved it," and that, "you had it coming, karmas a bitch," in reference to being disabled; being disabled is not a punishment or a sin, it's just something that occurs, and this mindset is a bad one to have; Grizzly defended the decision to play the character this way when he recieved criticism about it.

Insight that I feel should be quoted in full based on my own agreement and consensus amongst other users too:

i might have missed something but i'm just so unsurprised by jrwi's (mainly grizz's) lack of response to the lizzie thing. charlie and bizly have both made apologies for things that i think were considerate and they actually changed, but i feel like grizz and condi just kind of don't learn. grizzly's conveniently timed deleting of his questions page just adds to the feeling like, to him, it's not about actually growing and more about avoiding "being cancelled" i could be wrong (i hope i'm wrong) but past actions and words are usually indicative of future actions and words. i've had this small, growing frustration with jrwi the past maybe four months which sucks because i love this show. i do. i just want them to Improve. i feel like there's a lot of talk of improving and not a lot of progress.

I have already gotten worn out so sorry I haven't included more, but if you have any other comments or relevant posts feel free to add on.

12/31/23 - Peace in the Transition

As 2023 comes to a close, I can honestly say that in its totality — it was a good year.

A stretching year. A growing pains year. A lowkey, kinda highkey TOUGH year.

But a good year nevertheless.

I’ve learned a lot about certain habits, mindsets, standards that I need to let go of, and equally the ones that I want to embody.

Yet, letting go has always been a bit difficult for me. The balance between moving forward when I wanted to stay put and trying again even when I knew what the end result would be, was…not fun, to say the least.

But I know that I am in transition — that God is doing a new thing in this next chapter of my life, and I’ve finally…finally come in agreement.

I’ve finally found peace in the transition because I’ve surrendered it to Him.

I had a conversation with one of my friends a few weeks back regarding things we wish each other would experience moving forward, and she mentioned this idea of peace. And honestly, I have been doing so much this year when it comes to my job and finishing this Master’s degree (but by the graaaaaace of God, we have officially finished our Master’s program!!!), that I felt like I was chasing my tail! There was just so much going on that I couldn’t take a minute to breathe.

That being said, one Sunday night, as I preparing to bake chicken for my dad, I reflected on my conversation with her and the different things that have come to an end, as well as the ones that are going to begin in the new year.

And in that moment of preparing to bake chicken, I reflected on how far God has brought me. And how, even in the midst of the various things that occurred this year, His hand never let me go. He kept me, He pruned me, and He has blessed me abundantly…above allll that I can ask or think, COME ON SOMEBODY!!! 😭🙌🏿 (Ephesians 3:20-21)

But seriously…it just made me stop and really…smile! And be all the more grateful. Because His favor, His grace, His mercy, is not dependent on us, but on Who He is. And what He has done for me, and continues to do for me, makes me want to do nothing more than to praise His name and tell others about what Him!

And then, even today, right? My pastor, at the end of the service, declared over us that that this will be a year of establishment. And right when he said that, it was like I felt the Holy Spirit all through me — like it was the biggest confirmation for me yet! He even talked about how some of us have been sitting on gifts that God has put in our hearts to do, and that is the truth!! We have got to do what God has instructed us to do, because all of this is really about bringing Him glory, bringing people to Christ, and seeing Heaven crowded at the end of the day, right?

All of this to say, I really believe 2024 is going to be that year of establishment. Not just for myself, but others as well, and I’m so excited about it. I’m expectant. But as these different aspects and seasons develop and eventually come to fruition, I have so much peace in the transition, and I pray you do as well.

A coffee-fuelled, two day straight game of Trivial Pursuit ~classic Genus I and the 25th anniversary editions~ and she almost had him on the sports and the music questions. He was impressed with her Whovian universe knowledge, and she was impressed by his anatomical knowledge and even complimented him insofar as he could have passed the MCATs. At no point did she so much as hint that his PHDs did not make him a 'real' doctor. Her downfall came when he had to answer Arts and Literature for his final wedge. She took one look at the question, flung the little brown plastic piece at him and amidst teasing laughter, made a very unladylike hand gesture. Spencer will have the distinction of being the only person beyond her brother ~and siblings don't count~ to have ever seen her do it. So here they are at the BAU's New Year's Eve gathering, arranged by Penelope, whom Beth as to admit she loves like no one else on his team. She has a quiet conversation with Rossi ~Call me David~ and is glad that maybe just maybe Spencer has a second surrogate father. Though honestly, she doesn't imagine that he will ever get over the loss of Jason Gideon. Tonight isn't the kind of night that you think about things like that, and so Beth does her best to sparkle like the lights and keep things light. Maybe the things she likes best about all of this is how effortlessly he seems to be himself amongst his co-workers, his family really, with only a little good-natured teasing now again. How brightly he shines amongst them. And she can't help but watch his face animate with an expression of unmistakable adoration. And maybe because they're responsible folks, the party ends just after ten in the evening. The car service picks them up, mostly because Beth doesn't want Spencer taking the metro at this time of night, and especially not on New Years. She tells the driver they'll be going to Georgetown, and she smiles shyly when he raises a brow and looks at her with those big, questioning eyes. She promises if he has a case in the morning, she'll give him a lift. By the time they reach Beth's door, Spencer is adorned with her sheer black silk wrap around his neck. Her heels ~they add exactly six inches to her height and she's still too short~ are kicked off before she uses key and turns off the alarm. "Irish all have 'may the road rise up to meet you' sort of blessings. In Hawai'i, before Cook, before our illegal occupation? We celebrated Makahiki, a time for rest of people and land, when no war could be made." She searches around in where she meant to go with this, but no, Beth has sort of lost the plot on this one. "Toast in dere somewhere," she murmurs and reaches up. Her hands frame his jaw as she stands a tip-toe and pulls him down without a lot of prompting. She means to offer him a sweet kiss, a gentle one. But instead, it's all fire and fire works, ten minutes early. One she breaks only briefly to whisper his name around the kiss before returning to his mouth, just as hungry as before.
