So, Max Steel, specifically the 2013 reboot (the original and the reboot are two very different things) is a CGI cartoon that goes over the superheroic adventures of Maxwell ‘Max’ McGrath and his alien buddy Steel.

I’m gonna try not to spoil too much in case you want to watch it as spoiler-free as possible.

So, Max has a superpower known as TURBO energy, which is super powerful and he generates the stuff. He actually generates too much of it, as, without Steel to help him regulate it, he would probably turn Copper Canyon (the city he lives in) into a smoking crater (I might be wrong, but not by much). With Steel, however, Max has some very cool (buy our toys driven) TURBO modes, which are different armors that Steel creates; there’s Strength Mode, Flight Mode, Speed Mode, and so many more.

Together, along with the organization called N-Tek, they fight various bad guys who want to take over the world.

I’m a big fan of the first two seasons, but after that, the quality started taking a nosedive. Wrath of Makino, Dawn of Morphos, and Maximum Morphos are the dying gasp for the actually good stuff in my opinion. After that comes Team Turbo, Team Turbo Fusion-Tek, Turbo Charged, and Turbo-Warriors.

You can find it on YouTube, and there’s at least one other site, but I stopped using it after it downloaded stuff on my computer without my consent (so not cool).

Two sides of my brain are duking it out over this, because I am a contrary little thing that can never stick to one favorite for very long.

HOWEVER, I can absolutely post recommendations for the long haul.

My standing favorites from the live action series over the last 30 years are very rarely Rangers proper. I have affection pointed towards their aids and comedy holders more often than not.

In MMPR it was Bulk and Skull, but I had affection in spades for Billy. In Turbo and In Space, I still prefer the duo, but T.J., Zhane, and the Psycho Rangers all hold my interest for prolonged periods due to giving off bi, gay, and monster vibes. Interestingly, Lost Galaxy provided a lot of references to the human form, given how many times Leo ripped off his shirt. I still liked Kai more, but I think that was just because Archie Kao is a better actor.

Lightspeed Rescue was a fun time to exhaust yourself with conventionally attractive people that were largely bland as paint; though Kelsey did awaken a lot of sapphics.

If you watch Time Force, do it for no other reason than to watch Eric pine for Wes from a distance while Wes throws puppy eyes at Jen the entire time--and Wes and Eric still basically end up together.

Wild Force is for the Jindrax/Toxica, Danny/Max, and laughing as hard as you can watching the writers push SO HARD for the Princess Shayla and Merrick, only for her to fuck off back into sleep and Merrick ending up with a wolf furry he was stuck inside for the better part of a century.

Ninja Storm is...a sausage fest, but I stood firm and pleased with every interaction between Marah and Kapri with literally everyone else. Also Cam is basically perfect for his role.

Dino Thunder was is...interesting. I think my favorite Ranger is temporarily evil Trent, but only because it's fun to watch him suffer. Also Devin and Cassidy and the writers TEASING ABOUT THEM for half the season.

I think we can all agree that SPD really hasn't aged well, but that's okay, because I still really like Piggy and Kat; the borderline mafia adjacent and the team mom.

Mystic Force is interesting in so many different ways, as mentioned above about Nick, but also because the adult mentors here weren't entirely worthless. Udonna was very much doing her best with what she had, Daggeron was a little off putting, but a good teacher; Koragg was fucking awesome as an antagonist--but again, my favorites are the non-rangers in Clare, Leelee, and Phineas.

I still don't like Overdrive. I put in the discs to play them and the theme song turns on and everything after that irritates me. But Spencer and Rose are nice.

Jungle Fury might have the most well balanced team, which is why I actually liked the Red Ranger Casey Rhodes. But Fran has all of my heart; especially since she's left holding the bag SO MUCH. Also Camille and Jarrod *kisses them on their dumb little heads*

RPM is not a competition, because everyone here (that isn't Colonel Truman) has a reason for being what they are and doing what they do and growing from that. And because I am a basic bitch, Dillon and Ziggy are my favorites.

Samurai had...complicated bullshit. Like, do I really have to bring this up? They gave a purely Japanese history to a pair of blond, blue eyed, white teens, the only Asian on the team was the Pink Ranger and had a running gag of being a terrible cook, the Yellow Ranger was picked on for being a girl WAY too much, the Green Ranger is the culmination of obnoxious stereotypes reaching backwards from previous Green Rangers, the Blue Ranger's only endearing quality is probably being very gay underneath the obvious trauma of growing up in one of the most controlling environments that espouses loyalty as obedience... But Antonio is fine. We LIKE Antonio. (And Spike~)

Dino Charge has Shelby and Kendall, Ivan and Koda, Tyler and Riley and Chase. This was basically a perfect season.

Ninja Steel was so boring. It had potential, but they NEVER got into the human trafficking, the slavery, the childhood trauma, or veered away from the fart jokes with Victor and Monty. But Hayley is gorgeous?

Beast Morpers had Devon Daniels 💖💖 and Betty and Ben Burke. Also the Blaze and Roxy avatars look good in leather.

Dino Fury/Cosmic Fury. Go in for the Javelia and Ollaiyon, stay for the Fizzy. Ignore canon, but relax when Ollie goes evil and Fern is assigned as first canon live action Orange.

And if you don't want any of that: READ THE COMICS!!! Read Go Go Power Rangers, read Shattered Grid, read the Annuals, read Beyond the Grid, read Necessary Evil, read Return of the Ranger Slayer, read the Eltarian War!!! Do it for the ACTUAL character development, the art, the writing, the new characters, the lore, the branching of timelines and alternative history!! Everyone is a winner at least ONCE.

K is growingly more paranoid due to the number of ranger teams she has evidence have robots in their ranks especially the beast morphers since that’s the team their closest too

Preston was “bullied” out of the magic the gathering club by the mystic rangers due to Vida trying to accuse him of being an evil wizard without blowing their cover. Vida’s exact words were “we don’t don’t want your kind around here”. The ninja steel team now thinks the magic the gathering club is homophobic towards Preston and hates them. Ironically the mystic rangers all love the blue ninja steel ranger and the ninja steel rangers really life the mystic force.

Summer after spending the entire night fighting vengix and exhausted as she walks in the door and Mack the day after he found out he’s a robot. “Summer would you still be my friend if I was a robot?” “Absolutely not” cue Mack having a break down in the janitor closet only to be found by Ben and Betty who assure him they would still be his friends even if he was a robot

Mick is the impromptu medic to most of the robotic rangers

Tyzon is not sure what normal human anatomy should look like so he just copies a lot of what he’s seen Dana do but also does know someone from aquatar when he sees one and treats their injuries accordingly and the aquatar rangers just think he’s a human whose really good with secrets

The teachers are youngish (most haven’t hit 30 yet) and I use TA as a short hand for teachers in training so they’re earlier 20s. And then most of the students besides Justin and Nate are between 14-18 with Justin and Nate both being 12.

If you were to assign the shitgoblins one or two types from pokémon, which types would you go with? Also, if they were human, would they play video games, as ironic as that would be? And which kinda games if yes?

For Turbo I’d say Fire/Steel, and for Mavis Flying/Dark. I’ve probably made whole teams for them before but I dooo not remember them lol. Maybe I’ll revisit that

And if they were human, they would game. Turbo probably more so because he needs constant competition or he will cease functioning. He’s probably a console/PC gaming kind of guy. I could see him having a computer he custom built himself and won’t shut up about (we’ve all known that guy). Runs all games on max graphics.

Mavis would be more of a handheld gamer I think because she can’t sit still long enough for console games. Probably keeps a few handhelds of various generations in her bag. Much of her game collection is cartridges she swiped from other kids’ houses growing up. Her Pokemon Blue has FELIX written on it in sharpie but she scribbled it out and wrote her own name with a lil evil smiley face.

Turbo mostly plays racing games and PvP stuff. As far as jerks on mic go he’s pretty inoffensive, just insufferably smug and a very sore loser. Mavis would like insanely hard platformers and rhythm games the best, but occasionally she’ll play PvP or an MMO, with the express purpose of making the other players as angry as possible. Just failing on purpose, foiling plans, screwing teams over, acting overly clueless on mic and muting so she can lose her shit laughing at everyone screaming at her.

Turbo and Mavis never play on the same team for PvP for these reasons.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Trailer Showcases a Kid-Friendly Alternative to Revelation

Despite it being 2021 and not, say, 1984, there’s A LOT of Masters of the Universe in the pop culture panorama at the moment. Not only are toy aisles of major stores carrying its quasi-vintage-styled items—peddled to a new generation—brandishing the classic blue logo bursting through red rocks, but the streaming arena of Netflix is doubling down on the franchise, having first unveiled animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation in July. Now, the second part of this double-header (which would have been a triple-header had recent live-action movie plans not fizzled), CG animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, has heralded its imminent arrival with a trailer.

With just a quick glance at the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe trailer, it becomes quite clear that the series is not only a different take on the franchise, but a ground-up reinvention of the classic story—albeit one that, at the same time, has curated some elements from across its past iterations. While this particular take borrows the exact title of the fabulous-secrets-showing, disco-theme-thumping 1983-1985 animated series from studio Filmation, it also brandishes a technological sci-fi aesthetic that seems reminiscent of the 2002-2004 animated revival of Masters of the Universe from Mike Young Productions. The result is an intriguing hybrid series from the animators of House of Cool (Trollhunters) and CGCG (Star Wars: The Clone Wars/Rebels/The Bad Batch) that resets the mythology in a manner that aims to be accessible to impressionable younger fans; ones who might become molded on the concept that Skeletor has a bony yellow left hand!

Standing separate from Kevin Smith’s Revelation, this particular take comes from creator Robert David, who also happens to serve as an executive producer on that series. Yet, David happens to know a bit about reinventing classic franchises for contemporary kid audiences, having headed the 2008-2009 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and also worked on an animated iteration for another Mattel Toys property in 2016’s Max Steel: Team Turbo. Indeed, the new series may be based on a nostalgic brand, but—in a stark contrast from Revelation’s rapid, arguably-excessive references to classic concepts—its sanguine tone, loud voice work and wide-eyed looks typical of modern CG-spun serials clearly delineates a separate branch of the franchise; one that makes no pretense of continuing and/or emulating any vintage iterations. This approach potentially relieves the series of the segmented fan-fueled backlash that Revelation has endured after its now-famous protagonist twist.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation – How Much He-Man Knowledge Is Required?

The notion of a bifurcated franchise is demonstrably apparent in the Masters of the Universe franchise’s bread and butter business: toys. While Revelation has just started to release premium-priced, highly-articulated 7” scale action figures aimed at the nostalgic adult collectors it covets, new series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe seems to have taken that age-old strategy further in the very design of the show’s primary characters such as He-Man and Skeletor, each of whom share an artfully disproportionate, torso heavy, skipped-leg-day look that resembles, well, actual toys. And sure enough, complementing the unveiling of the trailer, Mattel has revealed the first look at the new show’s attached toy line, which consists of figures scaled at 5.5” (the franchise’s classic scale,) that conveniently look as if they jumped straight from the screen.

Of course, that is not to say that He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is missing the franchise’s primary pillars, since the upstart Prince Adam’s struggle, as He-Man, to protect the secrets of the mystical Castle Grayskull from the evil clutches of Skeletor remains the central premise amidst the updated bells and whistles. The characters, in a very toy-line tie-in manner, even call themselves “Masters,” notably with the quote, “To know oneself is to truly become a Master of the Universe,” and Skeletor referring to his evil warriors as “Dark Masters.” Additionally, the trailer further reveals that the series will even come to the table with a vintage-minded take on a classic concept that Revelation has yet to touch—at least in its initial five episodes—that being the origin of Skeletor. Indeed, in a crucial bit of exposition, we see a sinister goateed villain call out Adam for not recognizing his “Uncle Keldor,” one who we also saw superimposed with Skeletor, implying a transformation of some kind.

While the 1983 animated series rarely delved deep into backstories, and didn’t really provide one for its fists-shaking, insult-dishing rendition of Skeletor, a 1987 mini-comic included with the Mattel action figures, titled “The Search for Keldor,” first dared such an attempt. The story centered on the mystery surrounding the missing brother of King Randor (Adam/He-Man’s father), and ends with the ambiguously implied suggestion that Keldor was actually Skeletor the whole time—thereby making him He-Man’s uncle. This idea would be expanded upon in the 2002 series, in which a flashback prologue shows that Keldor is Randor’s half-brother of the blue-skinned Gar race. When a failed rebellion to take the throne left Keldor gravely injured after acid splashed on his face, he made a dubious deal to save his life and gain more power by merging with a demon, thusly becoming Skeletor. However, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe seems to be taking a different approach by not making Keldor a Gar, potentially changing the context of the Skeletor change, and altering the timeline of the origin story to be contemporaneous with Adam’s.  

The voice cast for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe consists of Yuri Lowenthal as He-Man/Adam, David Kaye as Cringer/Battle Cat, Grey Griffin as Evelyn, Antony Del Rio as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Kimberly Brooks as Teela/Sorceress, Trevor Devall as R’Qazz/Beast Man, Judy Alice Lee as Krass/Ram Ma’am, Ben Diskin as Skeletor, Roger Craig Smith as Kronis/Trap-Jaw/General Dolos, Fred Tatasciore as King Randor/Baddrah. Creator Robert David is joined by story editor Bryan Q. Miller (Motherland: Fort Salem, Shadowhunters), heading a long line of writers.
