Au that Max and Norm totes hide who Spider's bio dad is. Like Max and Norm gets this mysterious abandoned baby's DNA test and it turns out he is the son of Colonel Quaritch and a pilot named Paz Socorro. Of course Norm is in complete disbelief, no way a murderer like Quaritch could produce an offspring like this cute kid???
Norm: Run the test again.
Max: I ran them three times!
Norm: No! How can that asshole make this!
(Que an adorable baby Spider cooing at Norm)
Norm knows as soon as Neytiri or any Navi, forget the humans that would hold a grudge against Quaritch, find out about Spider's parentage, this kids life is going to be hell. So both men decide to... not tell anyone who Spider's dad is. The kid looks nothing like Quaritch and takes mostly after his mother, with the big brown eyes and curly hair, except where the mother is brunette, the son is blonde. It takes Norm three hours later to find a semblance of a birth certificate in the rooms the baby was found, in a shoe box under the bed. The paper brings a smile to Norm's face.
Javier Socorro
Born:2154 Pandora
Mother: Pasquella Marie Socorro
Father: N/A
Convenient. Most likely the jackass didn't want to be linked to the only woman who broke the rules of having a child on Pandora or Socorro knew Quaritch's enemies would come after the baby.
Norm and Max decide to erase all evidence of Quaritch from Javi's, Norm's name for the baby, life. The humans that were involved with the conception or birth of Javi are no longer on Pandora, so there is nobody to reveal his parentage. So it's easy for Norm to hit delete on everything about Spider.
Max: We tell absolutely no one of Javi's bio dad, got it? Take it to the grave.
Norm:Bet.
Mo'at, spying from the spirit tree: Bet
Eywa, herself: Bet.
Next with Jake and everyone else. It's not that Max and Norm do not tell Jake of the existence of a human baby on Pandora but just 'forget'.
It's not until Jake comes with a pregnant Neytiri on an unannounced visit, Max and Norm doing work with a white bassinet between them. Both him and Norm freeze when the two Na'vi spot the bassinet and immediately Neytiri is looking at it in alarm. Jake is the one who draws closer, stepping in front of Neytiri. This prompts Norm to hurriedly give an explanation of the presence of a human baby on Pandora, who his parents are (Paz Socorro and an aviation tech Norm knows is dead), and why they can't send the baby to earth. The kid won't survive the journey. Most likely, the kid will die in cryo-sleep. Jake asks more questions about the baby while Neytiri is staring at the baby for so long it puts Max on edge. Finally, the two Na'vi leave and the two scientists believe they are home free.
Until the next day, Jake and Neytiri are back with Jake wanting to hold Javi! Jokes that it's good practice for when the baby comes, even though Baby Spider can fit in the palm of Jake's hand, Neytiri herself just comments how small the child is. The two stay for four hours and both scientists are sweating buckets.
It gets better (or worst depending who you ask) when Neytiri becomes smitten with baby Spider!
Then suddenly Mo'at appears at Hell's Gate like.
Tumblr media
Which almost gives Norm another aneurysm until Mo'at's like "chill bro, now give it here."
So in conclusion before I go on a long plot, Spider is given a better lease on life thanks to Norm and Max hiding Quaritch's identity from everyone. Yes, Spider would get slack for being a human but at least it isn't a 'sins of the father' type of hatred but just the mistrust of humans. Max and Norm at first are gonna raise Spider but then Jake and Neytiri fall in love with Spider and want to adopt him.

HIS FORTRESS
Jake x Neytiri x Na’vi!Reader
Summary: When finding out the expansion of his family Jake became ecstatic, his favourite girls were bearing his children. But Neytiri found his excitement annoying, pregnant woman right? Warnings: Pregnancy, Mentions of hunting/dead animals Word count: 2.3k
Tumblr media
Happiness is simple.
Jake followed the same routine every day since the war, it was always wake up, give his mates kisses on the cheeks then getting ready to start the day as clan leader. He always started with learning from Mo’at about being Olo’eyktan and the spirit of Eywa, even though he has been Omaticaya for a few months there is still much to learn. Then he goes hunting with the other warriors in the forest, after catching prey it was eat then spend time with his girls.
While it wasn’t unheard of for a tri-relationship in Na’vi culture, it was extremely rare. Mo’at says they must be blessed by their great mother to continue with the ritual, and bless them Eywa did.
Neytiri was the first one to find and welcome him to the clan, she taught him the ways of the people and bonded with him under the tree of voices. Jake thought that one mate was it, they are bonded for life and needed no other. But along came ___, she was the same age as Neytiri at the time and a good friend to her.
They both went to Grace Augustine’s school when they were children, they played together and was raised together as friends. But Neytiri always stated she felt something different when around her, something she always felt around Jake. Never with Tsu’tey and never with any other men or women in the clan.
___ was sweet, she was a skilled hunter and a warrior, already passing her Uniltaron when she was of age to. Jake saw why Neytiri liked her, and decided to get to know her himself. As time did pass by over the weeks he fell more and more in love, with both woman. Neytiri, Jake and ___ bonded under the tree of souls. A union that could not be forgotten.
“Ma Jake?” a tired voice broke out from the hammock, “what are you doing up so early?” ___ sat up and rubbed her eyes, yawning and glancing at how the sun just started revealing itself over the planet they orbited.
“I was just thinking, yawnetu” he reached over and grabbed the back of her head, pulling her flush to his chest and kissing her hair. “Besides, our wife wants us up to hunt. Remember? she has been craving a lot of strange things lately…” he glanced to where Neytiri usually slept beside her and found the space already empty, assuming the woman was down in the forest already.
“You can go without me. I am too tired” ___ snuggled deeper into her mates side, breathing in his scent. Jake however, looked at her with raised brows, she never passed the opportunity to hunt with her partners. ‘Maybe she really is just tired’ he didn’t want to worry himself with anything too deep and slowly moved her arm to get out of bed. His mate scooted to where he slept and snuggled into the warm spot, tail curling around her body.
Jake chuckled and put on his cumberband, grabbing his knives and making sure they’re sharp enough he strolled out their hut, climbing down the tree branches and landing to the ground. He sniffed and looked around, saying good morning to the already awake Na’vi and humans. Walking towards a part of the forest he saw a footprint and went to track it.
Jumping above roots and ducking under others the Olo’eyktan moved around skilfully. Dreads swinging from side to side, ‘man i should have put it up’ he groaned in annoyance. Usually Neytiri had a band on her and would put it up for him and he was thinking of asking her, but he’d have to find her first.
He stopped in a clearing where the footprints disappeared and found no dented grass or snapped twigs. His trail was lost. He stomped his foot like a child, Neytiri must’ve gone up but he couldn’t track her like that. A hand slapped the back of his head and he screeched in shock. Whipping around he came face to face his his other mate.
“Like a baby” she tsked in English, having seen him throw his mini tantrum. Jake’s cheeks flushed, he was a leader, a warrior and yet sometimes he acted like a child, he was silly and his head sometimes became airy, easily forgetting customs and rules he was taught. Norm called him a himbo, whatever that meant. “Come” snapping out of his thoughts he was dragged away from their spot and towards the river that was nearby, seeing two dead yerik with an arrow lodged in each neck “I need help with bringing these back to the clan”
‘Jeez how long has she been up’ he scratched his head and tilted it to the side, staring at the hexapedes in thought. He walked up to one and his mate the other, grabbing the animal and hauling it over his shoulder. Grunting at the weight of it he watched Neytiri tie up its legs and do the same, the two slowly walking back home. Jake pouting the whole way, he didn’t even get to shoot anything…
Tumblr media
___ was up and about, the sun high in the sky and shining down on the Na’vi that resided by Hellsgate. She was helping with simple chores, deciding to take rest and not do any extraneous activities. Mo’at has let her know of joyous news and told her to take it slow today as the elder can see the exhaustion on her daughter in laws face.
Hearing yipping she turned to the sound, seeing her mates back from their hunt with two large yeriks on their backs. She dropped her basket of fruits and rushed towards them, some hunters already grabbing the animals and prepared them to skin. “‘Tiri” she hugged her mate, excited to finally have seen her this morning. Waking up without her was upsetting, she usually liked basking in the warmth of both of her mates and not just one.
“Yawntutsyìp” Neytiri responded back, wrapping her arms around her mate and kissing her unbraided hair. She would have to redo it for her. Jake watched in great love, and a little bit of jealousy. So he intervened and grabbed ___, wrapping his own arms around her. Neytiri glared at him.
“Hey now, where’s my greeting hmm?” he nuzzled his face against her hair and breathed in, the scent of Pandoran flowers hitting his nose. ___ giggled at the look Neytiri was giving him, she always found their little rivalry funny.
“My beloved, we greeted each other this morning. ‘Tiri and I have not until now” the woman in his arms gently pushed him away and went back to their wife’s arms.
The Tsakarem smirked at their husband and he only stuck his tongue out in retaliation, “nì’eveng” she rolled her eyes.
“Why have you gone out so early?” ___ interrupted and moved away to glance up at the other woman, raising her eyes and giving her a knowing look. She knew the condition Neytiri was in, it was the same as her but a few days further along. But her wife did not know that she was the same, having been a recent discovery. Jake did not know at all about either of them. Men.
“I was craving yerik and decided to catch two for us and share with the clan” to be honest she just wanted the yerik for herself, selfishly. But her wife and clan came first, even if she knew the rest of the hunting party were out now gathering more meats. ___ thanked her and held her hand, turning to their husband who was still pouting at them.
“I want some too…”
“No”
___ laughed and dragged Neytiri away before she could evoke more chaos, leaving Jake who was called by his human friends. “I have some news my love” she started when they where further away, bringing Neytiri’s hand to her belly she grinned.
The Na’vi could only blink, staring at her hand in silence. Then she grinned and giggled “I cannot believe it”
“Believe it”
“We are both..at the same time..the great mother has truly blessed us” She pulled her wife closer and put their foreheads together and breathed in, closing her eyes “oel ngati kameie”
Tumblr media
Jake could only watch from across the camp in confusion, ‘was their separation really that much of a big deal? Women’ his tail hit Norm behind him who was out of his avatar, deciding to go human for the morning. “Hey!” he complained and swatted the appendage that was still hitting him “what’s gotten you so worked up?”
“You see my mates over there? Why are they acting so lovey dovey”
Norm and Max turned to one another and deadpanned “Buddy..they’re mates. It’s normal”
“But i’m their mate and i’m not getting any attention” he pouted. Norm could only roll his eyes and slapped the aliens leg, Jake turned to look down at him in question.
“Lemme get into my avatar, then we can go have bro time. Max, link me up”
Tumblr media
Jake and Norm strolled through the foliage, after breakfast the clan separated to do some more chores like cleaning, making clothes or patrolling the area. They’re not in hometree anymore, being out in the open could be dangerous for them.
“So, any idea of why my wives are basically disowning me?” Jake started, thinking back to breakfast when the two woman where basically all over each other, whispering loving words and piling food onto one another’s leaves.
“Women are complicated, maybe something major happened for them to act this way” Norm thought back through his Pandoran knowledge, trying to remember anything about Na’vi females and their biology.
“Maybe.. I mean Neytiri said she was craving yerik and woke up at fuck knows what time in the morning to catch them. And ___ was too tired to do anything physical at all” Jake huffed and sat down on a large rock, picking a fruit that was nearby and tearing into it, throwing one at Norm who barely caught it.
The avatar then realised the fuss, the cravings, the fatigue. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out, but then again Jake has a below average IQ…
“I think you should talk to them” Norm finally concluded, he won’t tell his companion directly, it wasn’t his place to say, he bit into the fruit and watched Jake. The Olo’eyktan nodded and stood up, patting Norm on the shoulder and leading them back.
“I just hope they’re ok”
“By the sounds of it i’m sure they’re more than ok”
Tumblr media
The two woman devised a plan together, they would tell Jake then announce it to the rest of the clan tonight. They could not wait any longer.
They were sat waiting in their pod, chatting and updating their song beads, one more to signify their new journey into motherhood. Jake rounded the corner and barged in, his feet slapping onto the ground heavily. “So you two gonna tell me what’s going on?” ‘smooth Jake smooth’ he mentally scolded himself, coming across as too harsh.
Neytiri just threw a piece of twine at him “mawey ma Jake”. ___ stood up abruptly and padded towards her husband ears wiggling and head spinning, she was nervous. Telling Neytiri was one thing, but telling Jake was another.
“Ma Jake..we have something to share with you” the man in question raised an eyebrow, finally he was gonna get some answers to their weird behaviour. ___ grabbed his hand and rested it upon her still flat tummy, pressing it into her a little so he could feel the tiniest bump in her skin.
Jake blinked.
He blinked again.
Then he grinned “No way” he pressed again into his mates stomach and laughed out in glee when he felt it more. ___ nodded and beckoned their other mate towards them, grabbing his other hand and holding it to his other wife’s tummy. If Jake’s grin could get any wider it had “No way” he voiced again in disbelief.
“Srane skxawng” Neytiri hit his head lightly, chuckling at his expression. He felt tears well up in his eyes, he had two kids on the way. His wives were both pregnant, at the same time. It was a miracle.
“Jake?” ___ saw the tears in his eyes and cupped his cheeks, her face contorting into worry “nga tam?”
“yawne, oe nì’ul to tam” He grabbed his girls and nuzzled them, kissing both of their heads, cheeks and lips. Crying out of happiness, he gives his thanks to their deity “irayo si Eywa”
Tumblr media
Their clan held a great feast that night, their leader was starting his own family, two children on the way was a blessing and their Tsahìk made sure to say great prayers over the fire.
Jake was in bliss, his hands never left Neytiri’s or ___’s tummies. Not even to eat, the latter having to pop food into his mouth every so often to make sure he doesn’t starve. Neytiri could only slap her tail against his back at his silliness, but she cannot deny the happiness she felt in that moment for her mates.
“Oe tsìlpey fi’u ‘evenge” the love struck man tapped Neytiri’s belly with his hand, she merely spared him a glance and waved him off, disagreeing entirely.
“It will be boy. I can feel it”
___ finished her food and rested her head against her mate, the glow of the fire making her look ethereal “yes, he will be strong warrior. Like his father” Jake just sniffed in reply, feeling more tears come up. The woman on his other side hit him on the shoulder and called him a weakling.
But he couldn’t ask for anything more, this was his family. His fortress. He wasn’t gonna let anyone else take it away from him.
Tumblr media
Norm sat on the opposite side of the fire, giving his bro a solid nod in approval. He knew it all along, never doubt the mind of a scientist.

Guys hold on, I've got another absolute banger of a Spider fic idea for all you Spider fic writers to use and then praise me for thinking of.
Consider this: Spider goes to Awa'atlu with the Sully's as their son in the first place, and he's been raised by them his whole life. But, he's got an avatar. He comes looking like hybrid like Kiri and Lo'ak. They decide, in order to best keep him safe, they won't say anything about his human half. I think most likely his human self stays with the Omaticaya, for his safety and for the logistics of sneaking a fucking lab onto the island secretly.
BUT JUST IMAGINE, imagine Spider having to pretend to be a bio child of Jake and Neytiri's and even though he's been supported and loved his entire life, the complicated emotions that would bring. He's being treated as entirely Na'vi, and even though he's getting bullied like his siblings, it's for reasons he'd much prefer to the usual comments he gets, even if most of the Omaticaya and humans love him. He also gets more attention than usual, because his avatar is a little more similar to his human body shape than to the Omaticaya. Shorter and stockier and more muscular than lean. Usually he'd get teased for it but now it helps him excel in the water. He's pulling long hours in the link, his human body is suffering and his parents, Norm, Max, and Mo'at are concerned but there isn't much to be done to keep up the ruse.
WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AT NIGHT AND SPIDER ISN'T IN HIS BODY? Lol, Jake carrying him out of the Mauri like "he's a rEALLY heavy sleeper, guys, it's crazy right?" And Lo'ak and Neteyam have been crafting that ruse for weeks now, commenting on how hard it is to wake up Spider, about how Tuk always sleeps by him because she kicks, about how he slept through the bombing of Hometree the second time aND the first time? Laying the groundwork for someone trying to wake him up when he isn't in his body lol.
But detective Ao'nung is on the fucking case, something is sus with that short (he's like two inches taller than Tuk) Na'vi. Tsireya refuses to be involved and Rotxo thinks he's crazy but is tagging along begrudgingly on his investigations.

Spider breaks his leg when he falls from Tonowari's Skimwing
I saw edits with the Sully and that audio and thought I could make a video with Spider in the context of him being adopted by Ronal and Tonowari
It was fun and stressful to make the video 😩

Avatar: the Way of Water
Lo’ak: Okay guys, who wanted the macaroni and bees?
Spider:
Norm:
Max:
Spider: …do you mean cheese?
Lo’ak, struggling to keep the bowl covered: That does make more sense, actually.

I can’t stop imagining spider becoming an absolute badass, like the amount of ideas literally keep me up at night. For example, imagine that one day, Neytiri just goes off on Spider and says the most foul things to him - stuff that was so horrendous, even people who equally hated Spider being around had to try and calm her down, because what she was saying was completely out of line. To spider, he’s heard this all from the People, the Scientists, the McCoskers - but Neytiri always strikes a cord that can’t be fixed or shrugged off easily. The only thing that snaps him from his thoughts, was what Neytiri said next while she was being pulled away from the situation.
“You will never be One of the People. Your father is a Demon, and your mother is worse for ever loving him and producing such Spawn”
There it is the breaking point. Spider has always turned the other cheek when it comes to people that insult him or insult him by comparing him to his father. He always found that retaliation and tantrums only proved his accusers assumptions correct. But nobody. Nobody insults his mother. Spider could have screamed back and shouted bloody murder at her, but at this point, he just doesn’t care. She isn’t worth trying to prove himself to. His siblings know who he is, that’s enough.
From that day on, he doesn’t go to High Camp again and doesn’t wear his loincloth. He starts wearing cargo pants and tank tops, but he keeps his armbands, knife and jewellery. He wants to come into his own identity, but he can’t shed what remains of his past life (trying to be part of the Omaticaya). Personally, I don’t think that Norm and the other Scientists wouldn’t care too much about what spider does until he crosses a line or breaks a rule that they haven’t outright told him (that kind of behaviour is traumatising, I would know 🙂). So when figures out to give himself piercings and tattoos, they are livid. They are shocked at the transformation - where painted blue stripes used to be, there were inky black stripes that passed over every limb and even on his face; where dirty brown locs used to be, golden blond hair was fashioned into a Viking braid reaching down his back (similar to a kuru).
The only person that understands and doesn’t overreact is Max. Personally, that man was a dark horse in his family before he came to Pandora, I know it in my soul (Headcanon coming soon or after this post). He takes it on himself to support Spider and nurture his clear talents. He wishes he could have raised spider as his own, but knew that he would be shunned by his colleagues for raising his son - he couldn’t be seen as a disgrace after his time as a child.
Spider had a number of talents and skills, including Engineering, Chemistry, Languages, Marksmanship and martial arts. Max helped to nurture each and everyone. Some days, he would have Spider build and repair weapons and tech. Other days, Spider would learn chemical reactions or a new language. Every evening, Max would instruct Spider in combat and would exercise and lift with him to encourage him. Over the course of a month or two, Spider was unrecognisable. He took in information like a sponge and soon Max was running out of things to teach him. Piloting Samsons and Scorpions - took a few tries, but Spider was truly a born pilot like Paz. Stealth and parkour - He was already a natural, but he was fooling Na’vi warriors more often than not after a week of practice.
Eventually, when Jake started performing raids on RDA Trains, Spider knew it was time to put this all into practice. You see, deep down, he still wanted to prove himself to the People, but not so he could be one of them. He wanted to prove himself, to show them what he forged himself into despite them. However, he knew Jake would never approve him going along - he was still a child. The thought to Spider was ludicrous; Spider never believed he was a child, because no child goes through what he did and remains a child. So he decides to go anyway and doesn’t bother with permission. Though, he does ask Max, who understandably forbids this from happening. After reasoning that he would be safer if he got support to complete this venture, Max relented after hours of back and forth.
And thus, Araña was born. Imagine Winter Soldier getup (Hydra-controlled Bucky, not White Wolf armour) where the half mask acts as his rebreather so he doesn’t risk glass from a regular mask entering his eyes. All manners of weapons are strapped to his body including an Assault Rifle, a revolver (nobody knows that it was actually Quaritch’s revolver that delivered the fatal shot to Grace), A bow and quiver, a LOT of knives and a grenade or two. He looks terrifying but despite this Max feels proud - not about his boy going to fight in a war that has devastated everything he loves, but because this kid, his son, has stepped into his role as a defender and Max is proud of how far Spider has come to reach his goals.
Queue Spider being the biggest menace to RDA society that has ever existed. There was no reason for the Na’vi Ground forces to blow up the rail line, because Spider had already hijacked the train and pulled the breaks. The look of an anonymous Sky Person swing around the train killing and disarming grown men confused everyone in the raiding party, especially the Sully’s. There was something familiar about the acrobatics of this mysterious warrior, the answer on the tips of their tongues. It was only after Spider saved Lo’ak and Neteyam from the missile strike, that everyone realised who this person was. Nobody believed it until Spider spoke and then all he’ll broke loose.
I apologise if this too long or weird, I just needed to get this out of my head. I’ll definitely be adding to this given time, regardless of whether or not people like it, and the only thing that can stop me is my undiagnosed AuDHD.
Farewell to all, Yours sincerely,
Your Favourite Evil Overlord

I demand James Cameron to release the names of every scientist/human/avatar that were chosen to stay and live in harmony among the Na'vi.
There's Norm and Max, obviously, and there's like two named humans in the graphic novel, the High Ground, who just happen to be Spider's foster parents, Nash and Mary McCosker.
Imdb credits have all these avatar and biolab scientists unnamed. When watching the film on Amazon Prime, they have the biolab woman who berates Tuk and says "Avatars only, go around!" is labeled Jocelyn in closed captions but that's the actress' real name.

Lest We Rest Upon Our Graves | C22
Tumblr media
Ri’nela knew searching through Eywa for comfort was not often done to tend to a long-standing problem, not only for comfort but to try and find more of their people and ways of the Sarentu through Eywa had been her task and duty since their escape. She had little to build upon and yet, she had to build.
Even if the foundations were sand. Shifting sand which made it all the harder to build upon. Her constant had been her friends; the remaining few of her clan and working with the resistance. They only had each other which had been a good solid start. Like stone. But it crumbled into the sand as the churning waters of truth and grief struck through.
Nor was gone, abandoning them. Teylan had run off back to Mercer which only churned their waters up and then… Cortez. Cortez who had been there from the very beginning with a sledgehammer to force them from their foundations and away from their people and pretended like she had no part in it. Abandoning them for sixteen years in cold sleep. Not checking in. Not seeing the possibilities of life that the human woman wanted to leave behind.
An unfired bowl would leak sooner or later.
What a leak it was and it left Ri’nela struggling now to keep up with the flow. It was exhausting work. Even with Teylan back, she felt she couldn’t trust him. Not fully but she wanted to one day. She had hoped today, they’d finally get headway with the leak that Cortez had left behind. That the woman would stop running away from them and face the reality of her actions.
It was like a twist of cruel fate had decided not to allow them the chance.
Alma Cortez was dead.
Just… gone into nothing. Vanished into the forest. A human that would not be saved by Eywa to speak to after death either. Not one of the people. Never was.
Ri’nela hated how much it hurt now, not the personal loss that she pushed away from feeling but the hurt that Cortez didn’t tell them that she was dying. More secrets and now, they were left bleeding from them again. She didn’t want her heart to bleed for Cortez. Not after everything, not after the secrets. Not after dying without so much of a final goodbye. She shouldn’t have to grieve for her.
Yet she felt her body try despite her mind’s refusal.
“<Ri’nela.>” The familiar voice of Minang echoed before she felt the soft touch on her shoulder. She sighed deeply, stamping down her mild frustration at the interruption but she… was glad it wasn’t Kìoetey or Teylan. Kìoetey was... far too forgiving right now on the account of Cortez’s death that it angered her. Teylan was… not there in the way she needed him to be.
She could talk more freely to a Tsahìk
Ri’nela sat back, pulling her mind back and separating her connection to the Great Mother. Minang was crouched about three feet away, her expression soft but met her gaze.
“<I apologise for interrupting>” Minang started, “<So’lek mentioned you and the Sarentu will need spiritual and emotional guidance.>”
Ri’nela’s jaw flexed but… she supposed she shouldn’t be surprised. So’lek did care about them but some things he knew not to touch. She was glad for that. “<It’s nothing too concerning. Things will pass.>” Ri’nela said, “<There is nothing that can be done.>”
Minang head tilted. “<Death is nothing to be passed by so easily. If you do not allow yourself to feel of its effects, the shadow will always follow you. Hampering your personal growth as a person and as a Tsahìk. A Tsahìk must listen to Eywa and Eywa attend to our spirits after death.>”
“<There is no spirit to go to Eywa. Cortez was a human.>” Ri’nela stated.
“<But you feel grief from her death.>” It was a statement, the way the Tsahìk spoke but it felt very decisive.
“<I shouldn’t have to. After everything…>”
“<Grief has its layers, tied to the complexities of life. Grieving her death is only one layer of the loss. I do not know the details but So’lek mentioned she had helped raise you in the Sky people cages, but also was there when you were first taken. Sixteen years, you knew a version of her. Someone you know and connected to because there was no one else. Everyone must form attachments to survive. I won’t assume if she became the mother figure for you or not, but that is sixteen years of trust and care that came to an end when the truth came to light. Grief and pain come from severed connections. I cannot imagine how betrayed you felt.>”
Ri’nela’s tailed swished along the short grass, her gaze coming to stare at a bobbing woodsprite but she felt a dull heat in her gut and a tightening in her throat. “<I can’t forgive her>”
“<You cannot forgive her for her part in the Sarentu’s loss or her not mentioning her condition before her death?>”
Ri’nela nodded. “<Kìoetey’s probably forgiven her quickly now that she’s dead. How she spoke after coming back…>”
“<Despite the appearance, I do not believe that is the case, Ri’nela but… I am not here to talk about how Kìoetey has chosen to handle her grief.>”
“<I… What if Cortez died not telling us to try and earn redemption? It’s an easier way to get it.>”
“<She looked for means to recover but her death was unexpected, Ri’nela. You know this.>” Minang spoke patiently, “<She died knowing she was unforgiven and sought nothing to gain with that news.>”
“<You can’t know that. She was scared of us, Minang.>”
Minang let out a tense breath. “<Your anger is valued… but I see right now that you’re holding onto it too close to your heart. I cannot tell you how you must move on because that is not my journey but… to be a good Tsahìk to your clan, you have to be careful of how you keep it.>”
Ri’nela swallowed uneasily. She knew she had responsibilities as a leader and… she knew Minang was right but…
“<I don’t know how to let it all go. We lost our whole clan because of her and Mercer.>”
“<That pathway of loss will take years to walk down and you cannot rush it. Grief is not forgiveness, allow yourself to understand that. Forgiveness is a different road and you all the time to walk it. Allow yourself to mourn your losses, the Sarentu, the AlmaCortez you knew and one day, the true AlmaCortez. Grieve for yourself before you grieve for her..>” Minang’s hand came and settled on her chest. “<You are strong to have endured all that you have. You can allow yourself to rest that strength. There is no weakness in that.>”
Ri’nela could feel the heat return to her eyes, her throat thick and her breath shook before she closed her eyes.
-
Kìoetey was hesitant to return to the office but… at the very least she felt the need to actually check in with the other Eastern Resistance members beyond the woman now that they had plans. Teylan said he was going to get his things together, as little as he had, in preparation to leave for the Zeswa’s clan but Kìoetey wasn’t ready to go straight off like he was. Not yet. The resistance still needed them.
Getting closer, she paused as she heard voices talking among each other in a very intense conversation.
“… look here. Those signals are rapid… she must have been in a lot of pain..”
“Briefly, not unexpectantly, but the pain responses here decreased as sporadic activity spiked once the seizure kicked in. If anything, a seizure was triggered very quickly after the rupture. There’s no signs of consciousness after the seizure wains off and the blood starts to increase the pressure inside the skull... most likely falling into a coma first.”
Kìoetey’s gut tenses as she realised they were talking about Alma. Her condition. She found herself just listening, not interrupting the scientists.
“With the build-up of blood, that could have forced the brainstem down against the skull.” The second voice continued, very matter-oh-factly. “Do you think it could have been the cause of death over internal haemorrhaging? I’m inclined to believe that, even without a body to check.”
There was a heavy sigh. “It’s possible but there’s a lot of factors, Max. Maybe Hydrocephalus following the haemorrhage? The scanner did show blood within the cerebral fluid before the rupture.”
“She had a sentinel bleed days before. Nalin confirmed that. Death occurred far too quickly for that to be too much of a factor.”
There was a soft hiss of a wince. “Ouch.” There was a pause. “She should never have left the base after that. She should have been put onto bed rest and medically observed.”
“We can’t change what’s happened, Norm. Nalin is still learning how to run the medical bay. She’d newer to the role and to the Resistance than Dr Bashir. Plus, I don’t think it was the bleed that killed her. Look, the bleed is bad and I don’t doubt the severity of the bleed but… I’m concerned about how quickly she deteriorated. She died within six minutes of the rupture. Nalin mentioned she suffered facial paralysis and slurred speech. I think that cardiac arrest followed once the damage to the brainstem was too extensive. There was no saving her.”
There was a long pause as Norm took a heavy breath.
“Think she would have survived the procedure?”
“Given her scans here… probably not. Nalin’s running blood samples she took before her death so we should have some bio-data to go off without a body. It was mentioned she was on some Na’vi herbal remedies that apparently did nothing. I’m not so sure.”
“You think it could be a factor?”
“I think it’s always good to explore all avenues. Na’vi herbs in the human body linger a lot longer since our bodies process them a lot slower. If it affected her blood, then it could have thinned it enough to spread faster.”
“Still, it’s fascinating to see the post-death activity before activity ceased. It almost looks like she was dreaming. I don’t think we’ve had scans this detailed before…”
Kìoetey felt a little uneasy, a twisting discomfort in her gut the more she heard before she decided to enter, knocking lightly at a panel to let them know before she entered the space to see the Dreamwalker of Norm and Max was seated behind the desk, the monitors live with different imagines of Alma’s brain scans in different stages, One scan showed a lot of dark mass at the lower half, she could hazard a guess what the dark represented.
“Ah, Kìoetey.” Max quickly tapped the screen, minimising the images and turning it into a simple interface. “You look unwell. Are you okay?”
Kìoetey swallowed thickly. “I’m… planning to spend some time away from the resistance with the Zeswa with Teylan. I wanted to check in first and get an idea of… what’ll happen now.”
Norm nodded. “Of course. You’ve… been through a lot in a short amount of time. I’m so sorry to hear about what happened about.. your people and Alma’s death.”
“Did Alma ever mention us to you?”
“No. She mentioned she was part of an RDA program in the West but never went into detail. I did ask a few times about it but she always avoided the topic. I see why but… doesn’t make it right.”
Kìoetey inhaled softly. “She always did like her secrets.” She knew the Eastern crew knew little if Anqa of all people knew less of TAP but.. it made her sad to think about it.
“I think… I know this sounds bad and I’m not defending her at all but if Jake knew what she had been a part of, he would have had her sent back to Earth with the rest of the Sky People. She knew that.” Norm spoke, looking apologetic as he said this. “I’m sorry.”
Kìoetey shook her head. “I get it.” She did, unfortunately. A lie to keep her on the planet she loved despite the moral and ethical debacle of the TAP program in her shadow. She knew she was in the wrong to lie about it, gloss over the details enough to not stir up more questions. It was still 16 years of lying to the resistance.
“So’lek brought back some of Alma’s things from the station. We’ve decided to put them into storage unless there’s anything there you want to keep. Also, we’ve found some messages she left recorded for you.”
Kìoetey’s eyebrow pulled in. “Messages? Did she know?”
The two looked at each other before Norm spoke.
“I warned her that her survival chances in medical weren’t good and… encouraged her to leave a last message in the event of her death in the procedure. She made six messages. One for each of you and Alex and So’lek and… for us.” Norm gestured to himself. “She knew the risks of the surgery but was willing to take it.”
Kìoetey’s eyes widened. Her heart twinging. Alma had given them a chance to say goodbye? “You?”
“Generic things in terms of the resistance, updates she didn’t write down, the reburial of her avatar, that sort of thing. It’s all here.” Max patted the monitor softly. “Do you want to watch it?”
Kìoetey nodded softly. “Can you save them for me? I will watch it later and… give the others theirs when they’re ready.”
“Sure, this thumb drive okay? Or do you want it on the tablet?”
“Thumb drive.” Kìoetey decided, recognising the drive that Nalin had used a lot in terms of Alma’s data. Her medical file had been copied off by now, so… why not keep it herself? See what the data she had saved on there fully. It wasn’t like anyone else was going to use it.
Once they were done, she let them put it into a sealable plastic bag and handed it over. The drive was tiny in her hands but it felt like it had weight. She slipped it into her side pouch with a nod.
“Thank you.” She said, “How long are you staying?”
“A week. We’ve got to refuel, and keep an eye on the RDA patrols for a few days to ensure our way back’s all good.” Norm said.
“Let me know when you’re reburying the avatar. I can… help.” She knew why they’d rebury it; a new grave meant a more respectful one. It wouldn’t undo the damage that Jason and all his morons had done but it was an easier solution with some sense of respect restored. Since she had no part in Alma’s true body and Ri’nela had dealt with the avatar’s body before; she wanted to try and be there for this version, no matter how unpleasant it would be given it was still in active decay. She could put a mask on. Problem solved.
“Are-are you sure?”
“I… yes.” Perhaps it may offer some closure, maybe not but there was only one way to find out.
“We’ll radio you if you’re away,” Max said, reaching for a pen to write a note down, a reminder. “Did you want to help find a spot to rebury her or…”
Kìoetey hesitated, a part of her wanted to nod and say yes but she was surprised by her own reluctance. “I… ask me another day.” She opted to answer with. Perhaps it was still raw news but it was a lot to ask of her. Reburying the avatar was far simpler than choosing a place to rest its bones. It carried significant weight. Perhaps she wasn’t ready to bear it just yet. She had a minimum of a week to decide.
-
Ri’nela looked more at ease when Kìoetey next saw her return back into the base as she tended to Amay’s harness with the new weight of her belongings out back. Minang wasn’t with her but she considered their Tsahìk had opted to return to the clan first to prepare for their stay. She had seen the Tsahìk’s Ikran descend.
“<How are you feeling?>” Kìoetey asked, touching Ri’nela’s arm.
Ri’nela let out a heavy breath. “<Lighter. Minang has… a lot of wisdom.>”
Kìoetey relaxed considerably. “<I’m glad to hear it. Did she tell you of her offer to us?>”
“<She’s offered to help teach me along with her Tsakarem. I can learn a lot from her. I want to learn. Use her wisdom for guidance for our own.>” Ri’nela said. “<I’m glad to hear Teylan will be joining us. I didn’t expect that.>”
“<He’s… seeing a new side to human friends he doesn’t like. He’s… still trying to process it all. Not just Alma’s death.>”
Ri’nela’s lips pursed. “<How is he?>”
“<Emotional. He needs time as well but being around the Zeswa may be what he needs. He’s aware of that so… that’s a good start for him>”
Ri’nela smiled softly. “<Indeed.>”
“I’m about to fly out to the plains myself. Did you need a lift or do you have other arrangements?”
“Anqa will drop me and Teylan off later today or tomorrow. I still have a few things I need to do.”
“I thought Teylan was leaving as soon as possible?” Kieotey remembered.
“I can talk him into leaving with me to make it easier on Anqa. You?”
“I will be yo-yo-ing back and forth from the resistance. There’s still a lot to do to help. Especially with the Dreamwalker’s pregnancy. They may need Anufi or Minang’s expertise to deliver.”
Ri’nela tisked, blinking in swift recollection. “I completely forgot about that.”
“I do wish to help with the child. Live between two bodies will not be easy to cater to a child in one.” She’d see of course if the parents would allow that but she had never seen a Dreamwalker baby (excluding the fetuses she had killed) so it was certainly going to be exciting to see a baby around. Kìoetey hoped that… maybe a clan would be more willing to accept a Dreamwalker’s child as an ally; to allow that child a future with the people regardless of its parentage.
“Perhaps not but we should keep a respectable distance. Dreamwalkers are not Na’vi.”
“They’re not Alma. Ri’nela. They know that.”
Ri’nela stared for a moment before she shook her head. “<Sorry. It’s… I’m angry still with her. Better than before but…”
“<I understand>” Kìoetey closed the distance, setting a hand on her shoulder.
“<Have you forgiven her? Cortez?>”
Kìoetey cocked her head. “<Why are you asking?>”
“<You’re acting like all her sins are forgiven and that you feel like we should throw ourselves down and weep…>” Ri’nela stated, her tail swishing as she gestured softly towards the direction of the avatar’s grave.
“<Most of my anger has passed but that doesn’t mean my passivity is forgiveness. That my attempts to care for her are forgiveness. I haven’t forgiven her, Ri’nela.>” Kìoetey sighed. “<And I’d never expect you or anyone to do that.>”
Ri’nela’s tense expression faded out softly. “<Will you ever reach that place to forgive her?>”
“<One day.>” She could feel it in her heart but not yet. “<I do wish she had survived. It… wouldn’t have been easy to be around her but… seeing her make that effort, to try and earn forgiveness… to see she genuinely wanted to change... That would have meant something.”
“<I… I cannot consider it. Not yet.>”
“Do not rush it.”
Ri’nela nodded, sucking in a deep breath but looked ready to move on to something else. “I need some food. Radio if you need anything.”
Kìoetey dropped her hand. “<I’ll let you know about the arrangements the Zeswa will provide.>”

Okay so hear me out. This randomly popped into my head and won't leave so I just HAVE to write it before I DO forget it
Mo'at was bothered. Very bothered. None of the clan knew why,Kiri didn't know and that was unusual. Kiri has a knack for knowing things that she shouldn't, wasn't told or just before it happened. Yet not even this little blessing from Eywa knew why her grandmother seemed so upset and on edge recently. Many assumed she was simply mourning Eytukan, her mate and precious Ole'ektan. the anniversary of his death was very soon,it as always hurt her severely to remember the pain of that day. She lost her home but worse her mate...felt his pain....felt his breathing slow....felt his heart stop. She had broken down halfway away from Hometree's remains with a broken and broken hearted scream that day. Mo'at knew what they were assuming her strangeness was,yet as much as it was painful time, that was not it. The problem is that Spider, the young human child left behind, had yet to come visit the clan or Kiri in almost a week now. It was a concerning thing for her as the boy was rarely away from the clan or Kiri, the others came but the boy was not ever with them. The first two days wasn't bad, perhaps he had no mask to use,but as the days turned to a week she was concerned about the young human child. She knew she likely should not have felt as protective of the boy as if he were one of her grandchildren but she could not help it. So one day she eventually decided "To Hell With It"(She learned this from Jake) and went to Hells Gate herself to check on Spider.
When she got there she ducked down pulling a mask over her mouth and started looking for Norm,or Max, whichever was there and knew where the boy was.
"Oh. Spider's not been allowed to leave cause he got sick a bit ago"Mary,a woman Mo'at thought did not deserve the human boy as her son...the woman was...a worthless mother to him, Mo'at considered this the highest possible insult which from her it truly was and she had a good reason for this thought train. Mo'at frowned and sighed "What is he sick with?" Mary shrugged and responded "We don't know actually. Probably a Na'vi disease of some sort. not the flu but something else"Mo'at blinked slowly before it officially registered. Mary jumped back shocked and a little scared when Mo'at hissed at her.
"And you did not think to ask me!" Mo'at was a normally calm and reasonable Na'vi but this put out a mother's rage, because the idiots didn't think to as TSAHIK what type of Na'vi sickness the small human might have.
"We didn't want to bother you about him but he's in the room 231 down the hall in the med bay. It's beside the area where avatars first wake up."Mary took multiple fearful steps back and Mo'at hissed at her once more before find the room spider was in. the room was small but thankfully tall enough Mo'at could crouch like she would at the clan dinner and keep her head straight up. The worst rage, only the kind that could belong to a mother, hit her with the full force ond power of Eywa. The tiny human boy who was 6-7 at least was laying on the bed with bruises from needles all over his arms, and IV in one arm where there was already a black bruise in the crease of his elbow,he was pale and very very sick (The boy had tear streaks and red eyes,he looked at her and a sad weak smile came on his face.
"Hi Tsahik" he said in a broken, dry, and pain filled version of his usual happy go lucky voice.
"Hi little one. "She responded moving beside the bed and sat with her legs bent out to the side. She smiled gently and soothing.
"Why did you come to see me?" The poor little one asked her
"I was concerned as to why my granddaughter's favorite little human had not come to see us in a while"
"Sorry I worried you, Tsahik. when you leave in a minute tell Kiri I'm sorry to"Spider said
Mo'at watched him for a moment and took his small hand in her much larger one.
"I am not leaving little one,not until you are better and healed"
Spider watched her with a look of pure happiness in his eyes and started crying as best he could
Mo'at leaned up and hugged him softly letting him bury his small face in her neck while she cradled him gently, she felt his weak little hand clinging to her shawl.
After a while like that spider fell asleep and Mo'at sat there holding his hand. She knew most of the clan was wondering where their Tsahik was and that it wouldn't be long until her daughter or Son in law came to look for her. She didn't care though. This poor child was being put through absolute hell and pain because he was sick and his own species was stupid. Mary came in with another needle and got close to spider before Mo'at snarled at her and smacked the needle out of her hand and knocked Mary half way across the room in the process
"OUT. Or I will hurt you" Mo'at snarled through her bared fangs
Mary immediately left and told the others, they all tried but received the same thing except Nash tried and said something, whatever it was, Mo'at actually threw him across the room so hard he got a concussion. Norm decided no more needles now that he and Max knew about this. Norm poked his head in and saw Mo'at Leaning on the edge of the bed near Spider's head while he weakly watched a movie,The Looney Tunes, and gently stroking his soft blonde curls.
"Hey big guy,How's everything going?"Norm asked Gently but kept on the other side of the room. Mo'at looked up ready to snarl but stopped realizing it was Norm.
After Spider talked to Norm for a while and fell asleep,Norm started talking to Mo'at. Norm said he'd bring her healing equipment to her so she could take care of Spider and watch over him if she had to leave. It went like that for a few days, but Spider was a million times better with Mo'at taking care of him than the scientists,he was moving more, laughing, his voice was back to normal. Anyway Jake decided to go look for her since the clan hadn't seen her in a few days, when he was told he went to the room and found a surprising scene.
Mo'at was sitting with her legs to the side and bent slightly laying her head on her right arm which was bent, asleep, and her left hand laying face up with Spider's smaller one holding her three fingers. He was asleep and so was she but Jake heard about Mo'at's threats and aggression to sthe scientists that weren't Norm and Max so he left them be, wondering what that was about.

Take It Easy - What If Spider Never Left Hell's Gate?
Spider always wished he would be able to leave the lab, to finally venture out into the forest he had grown up hearing about. But no, he was stuck inside a metal box with a group of scientists who never batted an eye toward him, other than when he got into trouble, of course.
He knew the rules, and he followed them. Day after day, week after week, year after year. He followed them. He watched the clock tick by from inside the labs, he peered over Norm's shoulder as the older man worked, he even began to study astrology. Max began to call him the Man Of The Stars.
Life fell into a steady rhythm after his sixteenth birthday. He'd wake up and hit the old RDA-made gym, shower, do his long list of chores, and head to work. The rhythm never, ever changed. And he was finally okay with it. He stopped looking out the window, he stopped wondering what mysteries the forest held, and he stopped thinking of the yellow-eyed girl who haunted his dreams.
That was until the rhythm got absolutely fucked up the day Jake Sully walked into the labs. The behemoth Na'Vi entered through the airlock and scared the shit out of Spider, causing him to drop all of his astrology books.
"Dang it. Can you watch where you're fuckin' going, dude? Norm's gonna kill me if I damage these." Spider bent down to pick up the books, flicking his curly hair out of his face with a huff. He flinched slightly as a heavy hand came to rest on his shoulder.
"What did you just say to me, kid?" The human boy's eyes widened as he looked up at Jake. Spider swore that if he had a tail, it would be between his legs at that very moment. "Might want to watch your mouth 'round me."
Spider opened his mouth to reply but it was cut short as he looked at his watch. "Oh for fuck- I'm late for work!" He sprinted off in the opposite direction, leaving Jake alone in the entranceway. The boy leaped over the stray carts and tables, sliding underneath some of the scientist's legs as he made his way to Room.
'Room' was the word he used for the massive gym building that housed everything he needed. There was a jungle gym, a rock-climbing wall, rows and rows of bookshelves, a telescope, and a desk.
On the farthest side of Room, was his art wall. It was covered in colourful paintings that he'd crafted over the years, most of them were of the stars he saw.
Spider set his books down on his desk before walking over to the art wall, setting his hands on his hips as if deep in thought. Over the expanse of his lifetime, he only ever drew the stars, never actually seeing them. He wasn't ever allowed outside of airlock, even on his birthdays. Sure, Norm and Max promised to take him on their supply runs, but every time they left him alone in Room. It was starting to feel like Room was his only friend.
Even though he had left the life of wonderment and curiosity behind, a small part of him still wanted to get out of Room and see the stars. Or see anything, for that matter. Anything but Room, or the labs, or airlock. He wanted to climb something other than the rock wall, he wanted to study something other than the stars in his books, he wanted to be on the other side of airlock.
He wanted to be outside.

Spider.. Spider- SPIDER! SPI-
Spider rolled over and smacked Lo'ak over the head with a scowl. His legs were still very much tangled in his sheets, so when he attempted to get out of his bed, he ended up banging his head into the wall with a grunt.
"Hey monkey boy! Dad said we could visit you today." Kiri lifted him up by the back of his neck with a grin. "You sleep in awfully late."
Spider grumbled angrily. He walked over to his chest of draws and pulled out some of Norm's old jean shorts that he had cut himself, pulling them on quickly. They reached just below his knees and were so loose he had to tie a shoestring around his waist. He then donned his tank top to replace it with yet another tank top. But oh- This one was so different! It was just one shade darker than the other! Score.
He then pulled on his shoes and military-issued boots. Nothing seemed to work to cover his teenager stink, so he ended up over-spraying his lynx deodorant. Next was his hair which had been cut into a very unruly mop of curls, which Kiri tied into a man-bun atop his head.
"C'mon bro, show us your life in this.. Shack!" Lo'ak grinned.
Spider rolled his eyes before opening his bedroom door, setting off in the direction of Room in silence. Lo'ak and Kiri were nice and all, but they didn't seem to understand the differences they had. Spider was human, while they were Na'Vi. And to be honest, he didn't really like being around them. All he wanted to do was work and chores, so he could play in Room. That was literally all he needed to do before he got sent back to earth on his eighteenth birthday. He could finally be back where he belonged.
"Uh. This is Room. I work in here most of the time, don't touch anything." Spider pulled the curtains covering his paintings down, inspecting the newest set of stars he'd painted the night before.
Kiri's jaw dropped open in awe. Her thin fingers skimmed over the paint, feeling each groove and dip of the concrete wall. "You painted these all yourself?"
Spider nodded.
"They are very good, Spider. You should keep up with it. Maybe some of the village Elders might want some?"
That drew a pretty loud snort from Spider. "I can't give them away, they're literally etched in stone." He walked forward to stand beside Kiri, his voice lowering to a pained whisper. "There's no real talent here anyway."
Spider, who always saw himself as nothing but an unwilling addition to the humans, never had someone to praise him or congratulate him when he did something good. Spider spent his entire life alone in Room, and at first he told himself that he was worth something.
'Don't worry Spider, Norm doesn't hate you. What he told Max wasn't true!'
'Don't worry Spider, Jake wasn't lying when he said your paintings were good!'
But Norm did hate him, and his paintings were crap. So there was no point convincing himself that he was worth something.
"C'mon bro! These are awesome, definitely better than Tuk's." Lo'ak snickered, slapping Spider on the back. The human boy gritted his teeth together and turned away from the Na'Vi teenagers. They didn't get it, they never could get it. They had parents, they had siblings, they had friends. He had nothing.
"Can you fuck off for once?" The words had left his mouth before he could stop them.
Lo'ak's grin dropped, and Kiri flinched away from him.
An incredible silence settled over the three, and it stretched on for way too many minutes before a voice spoke up on the other side of Room.
"Lo'ak, Kiri. Your mom says its time to go home." Norm poked his head through the double doors. Spider stomped toward the man and shoved him out of the way. He had no clear idea of where he was going, but he knew he couldn't be around them anymore.

It'll get more interesting I promise <3
