Transcript below the cut.
Marco: Thanks for doing this with me. I’ve been putting it off ‘cause my joints’ve been killing me lately.
Max: That’s fine. I like to cook.
Marco: Where did you learn?
Max: With my grandmother. I lived with her for about three years and a half when I was a kid. She made me cook with her every evening after homework.
Marco: I used to cook for my siblings. Easy things I’d throw together just to fill our bellies. Elena was the master chef of our household. She’d find me lurking and boss me around the kitchen.
Max: I’m sure you loved it.
Marco: [Laughs] I did
Marco: Canning is a tradition in our family. During the holidays, we used to give part of them to family, friends and neighbors. It’s a tradition I’ve been meaning to revive this year.
Max: It’s a lot of work, though.
Marco: That’s why they make such thoughtful gifts. There’s time and effort behind each jar. And they bring so much comfort. Do you have any family traditions you’d like to keep alive?
Max: Nah. We didn’t really have traditions in our house.
Max: We used to go to my grandma’s when I was little. She would get a real fir tree, a small one, from one of her neighbors. It smelled so good. Sometimes, I stayed with her a few days after Christmas, and we used to make broth with the turkey bones from the dinner’s leftovers and freeze it. She’d serve me some every time I got a cold. She said it’s the best medicine.
Marco: She’s right.
Marco: I don’t have turkey bones at the moment, but I had kept some chicken bones for a broth. Do you remember her recipe? Or maybe give her a call for it? We could start it next.
Max: We can’t. She’s not alive anymore. And… it’s been too long.
Marco: I’m sorry... How about we get it started how I usually do it and you chip in with what you remember?
Max nods.

soo my lovely aspen asked for moots as fictional characters and i assigned tinker bell characters to some of my moots before running out of options, so here's the "the seven husbands of evelyn hugo" edition!
(please note that this book was not necessarily a positive portrayal of some of the characters... if you've read the book and you get assigned a character you didn't like from it i'm sorry 😔😔 i read the book a long time ago and lowkey forgot who was likeable and who wasn't)
ria / @i-luvsang: evelyn hugo. she knows what she wants in life and she has a tenacity that i think you would have. she's not afraid to speak out for what she believes in, similar to your strong support for palestine.
noelle / @icyminghao: max girard, a true romantic who knows just how to capture his muse. ok how not to lie i've actually just realised i don't think i've read any of ur works before (IM DEEPLY APOLOGETIC) but i read ur "asking svt what they'd do if u became a cockroach" and i think u captured them wonderfully.
moon / @fylithia: robert jamison. he's a caring stepfather to evelyn's daughter, and i kind of think you're a great parent to billy and loki. :D (how are they btw i would love to see more pictures of them!!)
jan / @dearlyminhyung: john braverman. a strong, steady presence, he's someone who isn't afraid to set boundaries and call others out on their bullshit. i think you'd be somewhat like him.
ven / @ikrivi: connor cameron. a little argumentative, she can be quick to love and latch onto misunderstandings. i think you're like her in her youthfulness and knowing more than it seems in her innocence.
ara / @arafilez: celia st james. she's a well-loved person, very head on and straightforward in her words. she loves fully and completely and is extremely amused by all the little characteristics of those she loves.
sky / @weird-bookworm: monique grant. giving main character energy, very eager to learn, i think that's totally you. also attentive and sometimes yells at people she loves (i think)
ally / @winterchimez: rex north. a rather sensational character. a very professional person! just like u and your writing and proofreading :)
dreamy / @jisungsdaydreamer: harry cameron. he's probably the one evelyn was married to the longest. he's realistic, down to earth and caring. i think you would match his energy!

"they are just husbands. i am evelyn hugo."
a blog by chloe denise nunag of bs psy 2a.
taylor jenkins reid is an american author, well known for her works like daisy jones & the six, malibu rising, after i do, and most notably, the seven husbands of evelyn hugo.
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo is one of the most treasured pieces of literature in the book community. but what is it about, really?
Tumblr media
this is a peek into tshoeh, an unbiased and non-spoiling review to get you to read it as well.
for a short background, the seven husbands of evelyn hugo is centered on hollywood movie icon, evelyn hugo. decades have passed since her peak and golden days, and now, she is finally ready to let the public in on the truth about her rather scandalous (love) life.
scandalous, how? well, as the title indicates, hugo married seven times in her life, and this has been a hot topic among the people for years and counting.
with this, monique grant, a journalist for a prestigious magazine, is contacted for a sit-down with hugo. now, hugo has never done exclusive interviews throughout her career, especially not about her private life. so for grant, this could be the scoop that will boost her position in the company and change her career forever.
hugo tells grant about each of her marriages in detail from the first to the last, and grant listens and takes careful note of each one. however, as the book progresses, one would realize that it is not simply a coincidence that hugo personally chooses grant to write her biography.
why?
well, that's reason number one for you to pick up a copy and start diving into hugo's vibrant life.
the story in itself is captivating, but the characters you will definitely fall in love with; evelyn hugo is complex and sometimes morally gray, not often by choice as she was only ever navigating her way through the messy hollywood scene. she is the personification of the idea that is beauty and brains: beautiful, sexy, smart, sensual and ambitious. but she is also mean and calculating, having used people to get what she wanted.
and i'd talk about her seven husbands in detail, but as this review is spoiler-free, i will describe them the way hugo did; poor ernie diaz, goddamn don adler, gullible mick riva, clever rex north, brilliant, kindhearted, tortured harry cameron, disappointing max girard, and agreeable robert jamison.
then, there is also celia st. james, another one of the most famous actresses of hollywood's golden age alongside hugo. being "america's sweetheart", st. james intimidates hugo with her talent in acting, which sparks a rivalry between the two.
of course, there is monique grant. she is charismatic, driven, and like hugo, ambitious. she is a commendable black woman in journalism, consistently standing out for her works, notably for her piece on the right to die.
and that's reason number two for you to grab a copy, physical or virtual.
lastly, aside from the story and the characters, taylor jenkins reid has a way with words that will engulf you in hollywood's golden age and the present time. she stripped bare the movie industry, and she will make you question the truth about the celebrities we know and the lives they present to the public.
she will also make feel a (crazy) range of emotions. one second, you love evelyn hugo, then you hate her the next. reid will make you laugh, then cry. you will be filled with fury with the actions and words hugo leaves, then feel for her and the things she has to go through.
then, there are also the newspaper articles and letters from the past, as well as the features of the present.
more importantly, it is real and raw in a sense that it shows the reality of life and love—how it's never easy, how it's not as glamorous as presented in other forms of media; life is full of twists we never expect, and love will consume you alive.
ultimately, the book was structured and written in a manner that will leave you wondering about what comes next until you are just incapable of putting it down.
yes, that's reason number three of why you need to get into tshoeh as soon as you can.
overall, i can say that the seven husbands of evelyn hugo left me with no words. but at the same time, i have a million things to say. when i first read it, i completed it in one sitting. it was 4 in the morning when i bawled as quietly as i could as to not wake up and alarm the other people in the house.
it's that good.
so, it's your move now. (cmon, put tshoeh in your shopping cart, and check it out Right Now.)

Joe Marsala – The Chronological Classics: 1936-1942
“An excellent swing clarinetist who was flexible enough to play hot on Dixieland records, Marsala’s six sessions reflect his versatile musical tastes. Among his more celebrated sidemen on these formerly rare selections are trumpeters Marty Marsala (his brother), Pee Wee Erwin, Bill Coleman, and Max Kaminsky, trombonist George Brunies, altoist Pete Brown, violinist Ray Biondi, drummers Buddy Rich and Shelly Manne (both making their recording debuts), and several fine rhythm sections. Marsala’s wife, Adele Girard, the first great jazz harpist, is notably added on 11 of the numbers. Her hot harp playing on “Bull’s Eye” and “I Know That You Know” steals the show. Highly recommended.” – Scott Yanow/AllMusic.

Max: [Knocks]
Marco: Come in.
Max: Hi! Is everything ok? I saw Magoo outside and he doesn’t look too good.
Marco: Yeah, I’m getting ready to go to the vet with him. I was able to get an appointment at 12:00.
Max: Do you need me to do anything for you today?
Marco: No, that’s fine.
Max: Oh, ok.
Marco: What’s going on with you? You seem bummed.
Max: No, I’m fine. Why do you say that?
Marco: Nevermind.
Max: I just-
Max: [...]
Marco: [...]
Marco: We have time for a cup of coffee. You want one?
Max: [nods]
----------------
Max: I didn’t have a happy childhood and I’ve been involved in some... illegal stuff in the past. You’ve figured as much already. I’ve been getting pretty close to this girl and... I haven’t told her about any of it, really. It isn’t fair to keep evading the subject or lying to her about it at this point. And... I can’t drag her into this.
Marco: Max, are you still active?
Max: No! I closed that door when I came here. ... Except for the few things I borrowed, and gave back.
Marco: Then what would you be dragging her into?
Max: It’s complicated...
Marco: Is it?
Max: She’s just known a life much different from my own.
Marco: Are you serious about her?
Max: [...]
Marco: ‘Cause if you are, you should talk to her... let her make her own decision about what she wants to do. You’re doubting yourself because you’re assuming she’ll judge you or won’t understand what you went through. You can’t know that if you don’t give her a chance.
Max: It’s not just about us. She has a family. As a parent, what would you think if your daughter went out with someone like me?
Marco: The truth? First reaction, I wouldn’t be happy about it. But you’ve shown a lot more courage, resilience and sense of responsibility than many kids your age. Maybe there’s a way to get past those first impressions. Maybe your present actions could show your character better than the past ones.
Max: Maybe... Or maybe I should end things before they go any further.
Marco: You could... Is it the same person you’ve told me numerous times that she’s just a friend?
Max: Yeah...
Marco: Would you be able to stay away?
Max: [...]
Marco: My advice: whatever you decide to do, go all in. If you decide to end it, make it clean. If you decide to pursue it, be honest and let her in. Things left unsaid are certainly going to drive a wedge between you two. I have to leave now. Will you be okay?
Max: Yeah. I think I just needed to talk about it. Thanks for listening.
Marco: Max, I’m happy to be here for that. We can talk whenever you want.

Evelyn's life - at least the version on record as of now is enough for ten soap operas. There's the early marriage that ended in divorce when she was eighteen. Then the studio set-up courtship and tumultuous marriage to Hollywood royalty Don Adler. The rumors that she left him because he beat her. Her comeback in a French New Wave film. The quickie Vegas elopement with singer Mick Riva. Her glamorous marriage to the dapper Rex North, which ended in both of them having affairs. The beautiful love story of her life with Harry Cameron and the birth of their daughter, Connor. Their heartbreaking divorce and her very quick marriage to her old director Max Girard. Her supposed affair with the much younger Congressman Jack Easton, which ended her relationship with Girard. And finally her marriage to financer Robert Jamison, rumored to have at least been inspired by Evelyn's desire to spite former costar - and Robert's sister - Celia St. James. All of her husbands have passed away, leaving Evelyn as the only one with insight into those relationships.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) dir. Dominique Othenin-Girard. 7.3/10
I wouldn't recommend this movie to my friends. I wouldn't rewatch this movie.
I like Billy and Sam's support for Jamie. Albeit, Sam is being very aggressive with this little girl.
Bro, poor Jamie. She is not okay. This is too traumatic for such a small girl. Oh no at Jamie seeing Max's dead body. And all the others.
