🔪THE WOMEN IN PSYCHO 🔪
list of characters in order: Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, Vera Miles as Lila Loomis, Meg Tilly as Mary Loomis, Claudia Bryar as Emma Spool, Diana Scarwid as Maureen Coyle, Sharen Camille as Holly, Olivia Hussey as Norma Bates, Donna Mitchell as Connie Bates.
this halloween month, I want to honor the women who were part of Anthony Perkins Psycho franchise. Whether they played a big or smaller roles, each woman contributed significantly to shaping the story of Norman Bates. Women in horror have always brought the depth, emotion, and nuance to these films, they ought to be acknowledged and appreciated for their roles. Let's celebrate their contributions in one of the greatest horror movies of all time!

here it is: the 'jealousy-turned-throupledom' normareen AU that I don't have a proper name for
(normareen = norman + mary + maureen)
it's very long, so it'll be under the cut. here we go!
set during the interstice between psycho 2 and psycho 3. mary doesn't die, neither does maureen (obviously). and the "standoff" with mary in which she dresses up as his mother, kills dr. raymond, etc. doesn't happen. but emma spool killing lila and everybody else, and her visiting norman and proclaiming to be his mother, and norman killing her because he got triggered (and because he realizes she's the one who kept calling him and who murdered all of those people and tried to set both him and mary up) does.
norman and mary have figured out things between them in the meantime and entered into a relationship, by this point
maureen's arrival is the selfsame as in psycho 3: she tries to kill herself and leaves the convent, duane duke gives her a ride (and he consequently tries to r*pe her and kicks her out of the car, all that), etc.
tracy venable also arrives, having heard about the disappearance of emma, and interrogates norman about it when he's in the diner
norman is jarred when maureen is dropped off at the diner and he first sees her because, of course, she looks like and has the same initials as marion crane.
maureen checks into the motel where she also meets mary and they get along quite well • keep in mind mary isn't present when he sees maureen, norman isn't present (doesn't get back until later) when mary officially meets maureen
norman arrives to find mary and maureen conversing with one another and he is overwhelmed with guilt and terror and fright both because the former is marion's niece and because the latter looks like her. and here they are... two of the biggest reminders of the beginning of the end of norman's life... TOGETHER. TALKING
duke gets a job at the motel just like he did in the film. he hits on mary just like warren toomey did and makes her incredibly uncomfortable (which maureen, not norman, defends mary from). in tandem, maureen, traumatized by her earlier encounter with duke, is terrified about being under the same roof as him + duke having a key to her room (and for obvious reasons norman absolutely does NOT want to lodge her in cabin 1), so norman impulsively offers to lodge maureen in the mansion with him and mary. maureen takes norma's old room while norman & mary sleep together in mary's bedroom / mary's bed
norman's guilt over dating the niece of the woman he murdered compounds when he starts spending more time with maureen both with and without mary present and realizes that he's developing a crush on her, much to the jealousy of mary
maureen, in turn, observes norman and mary's relationship and is overwhelmingly envious / covetous of their chemistry that she feels that she herself can't have because she's damaged
mary, even though she side-eyes maureen for 'commandeering' norman from her, is grateful to maureen for standing up to duke for her, and mary finds maureen really pretty and feels something stirring for her that goes beyond finding another woman objectively attractive
maureen has dinner with mary and norman her first night at the house and it goes well
(nsfw) mary has to take a shower after dinner and maureen, who's settling herself into her new bedroom at the same time, discovers the peephole in the wall between the bedroom and the bathroom, and curiously looks through it and she sees mary's naked and wet body... and she can't bring herself to look away
at the same time while mary is in the shower, she mulls over the maureen thing and decides she's going to talk to maureen and clear this whole thing up
mary enters maureen's room eager to talk to her. she sits down on her (technically norma's) bed and they converse.
they talk for a while. maureen opens up to mary about her religious trauma, and her depression; mary opens up to maureen about being abused by lila throughout her childhood.
mary places her hand on maureen's thigh and it stirs something in maureen
eventually the conversation topic turns to norman. maureen tells mary about norman telling her that '[maureen] reminded him of someone' and mary admits that it's probably her aunt, marion crane—and mary can see the resemblance indeed. it's then that mary reveals norman's past to maureen and reveals how she (mary) and norman came to be, but she intentionally misrepresents it and says something that's sanitized and obfuscatory but technically the truth: "Norman's mother murdered my aunt, and Norman helped dispose of her body. My mother and I came here for the sole purpose of torturing Norman, to try and drive him insane so that he could be sent back to prison, and we blamed him for a very long time, but Norman did his time and I learned to forgive him, and I ended up falling in love with him. besides, my mother is a lot like his was."
later that night maureen (after norman and mary go to bed and she thinks they're asleep) enters the bathroom under the pretense of her ALSO needing to take a shower, and she flashes back to her religious trauma and of almost being r*ped by duke, and she tries to kill herself in the bathtub exactly like the film. norman and mary find her and save her life
mary and norman visit her in the hospital
the chemistry between all three of them changes as soon as the two of them bring maureen home
mary and norman separately watch maureen through the peephole just like maureen watched mary, and maureen watches both of them in turn. not a single one of them knows or is aware they've all been watching each other.
mary briefly thinks about the girl she kissed at a frat party in college while drunk and she offhandedly wonders what it would be like to kiss maureen
norman wonders of the possibility of being in love with both mary and maureen at the same time, and having them both
maureen's own feelings for both mary and norman deepen, especially in the wake of both of them saving her. • (nsfw) maureen hears them making love one night, it incites arousal in her and a small, fractional part of her wishes she could join them
maureen mentally wrestles with the guilt and shame and sin in lusting after both 1) a spoken-for man and 2) another woman and 3) BOTH OF THEM AT ONCE but ultimately she realizes she doesn't give a flying fuck • on separate occasions she kisses mary, and she kisses norman, and professes to each one that she wants them
(nsfw elements) the three of them then become a throuple. they live blissfully together: mary and maureen trying on each other's clothes, braiding each other's hair (with minimal success because they both have short hair) and trying to braid norman's (much to his chagrin), both girls playing with one another's hair, both girls playing pranks on norman, both of them wearing norman's or each other's clothes for comfort, both of them snuggling into norman and/or one another on the couch while watching TV/movies, both ladies making breakfast for norman in the morning, both of them changing in front of norman or making love in front of him and sexually arousing him, all three of them or any two of them showering together, norman taking them both out to dinner and teaching them both how to slow dance, etc.
furthermore:
duke and tracy team up just like they did in the film and they try to get both women away from norman by telling them about norman's past, but both women stand by norman (and each other) no matter what.
maureen is slightly unnerved by the real circumstances of 'mother'/the murders and the fact that mary technically lied to her, but she thinks about what mary said about how she forgave norman. and the fact that she (maureen), too, committed sin by trying to commit suicide, and also for indulging in lesbianism and in adultery, and that maureen would want to be forgiven, too. plus the fact that mary and norman saved her life and she's immensely grateful.
norman is concealing lila's and emma's murders from both mary and maureen and the guilt threatening to come undone bleeds into both relationships
duke is the one who kills red and patsy boyle, not 'mother,' though he dresses up as 'mother' to frame norman for it just like lila and mary did in the previous film
duke breaks into the mansion when all three of them are gone and uncovers emma's and lila's corpses in the cellar, which he uses to try and blackmail norman and also try and frame him for the murders of red and patsy. and this standoff happens in the mansion, not the motel. norman tells duke that emma killed lila but he killed emma in self defense. mary and maureen are actually listening in and hiding, and they ambush duke and help norman kill him. maureen is especially brutal with duke because of how he previously tried to rape her. maureen's rationale for killing someone is, "I'm already a killer—I killed myself" + gratitude and loyalty to mary and norman for saving her life.
(nsfw) norman, mary, and maureen all dispose of duke's corpse (and those of emma and lila) together. when they arrive back at the mansion, they all cathartically make love.
tracy and the cops arrive and inform norman, maureen, and mary about emma spool's past (which tracy discovered by doing her research just like in the film) including how she kidnapped norman as a baby and murdered his father because she was in love with him, and pretended to be his mother. so she and the police all conclude that emma is the one who killed toomey and that teenage boy and lila (who was also reported missing), and who previously pretended to be norman's mother on the phone and in the notes to drive him nuts (when it was lila and mary), and that her disappearance was her going on the run, and tracy personally apologizes to norman and bids him farewell. but she asks where Duke is and norman replies that he just up and left. and maureen pipes up and lies tells tracy that she witnessed Duke arguing with Red and with Patsy, and that duke previously tried to rape her, and says that he also tried to rape mary (he didn't)... setting duke up to take the fall for their murders should their bodies be found.
and they lived happily ever after. the end.

Norman and Maureen can be described as two Gomezes together since they both live to fawn over their partners. Either of them are Morticia, though, because neither as the self esteem to be a Morticia.

Psycho III (1986)
⭐️⭐️1/2
Psycho 2 was a strong sequel, it worked because the writing was smart enough to update the story without compromising character or the legacy of the original. Psycho 3 is the brainchild of Anthony Perkins himself and while there are defiantly interesting aspects, it isn't able to pull off the same trick.
The story follows Norman operating his motel with help from a shifty assistant named Duane. Norman keeps up the semblance of being sane and ordinary, but he still holds on to some macabre habits. Eventually, Norman becomes interested in Maureen Coyle (Diana Scarwid), a troubled tenant who's been staying on a long-term basis and reminds him of someone from his past. As Norman and Maureen begin a relationship his sanity comes into question.
Perkins is a good director and he knows the character of Norman so well at this point that you can't fault him on performance, no actor here is a weak link, but the script lets them down, interesting ideas with no real cohesive story, or interesting ideas with no pay off. You can't help but feel the film delving more into the "slasher" tropes of the time as well which doesn't bode with a higher quality slasher franchise like this. This third instalment is entertaining but an entertaining failure.

things I’m currently thinking about (with regards to psycho 2 and 3 concatenated with each other)
that for majority of psycho 2 norman wore a T-shirt and a light dress shirt signifying his freedom (especially with mary and the fact he was comfortable around her) from ‘mother,’ but in psycho 3, he double-layered himself with an additional dress shirt and an overcoat again (signifying his being metaphorically trapped in a cage once more — especially with the weight of emma spool’s murder looming over him. this is compounded by the fact that he couldn’t kiss maureen because he also felt mentally restricted), redolent of how he dressed in psycho 1 where he felt more burdened by his mother than ever
that maureen is the antithesis of mary externally — blonde and feminine compared to dark-haired and butch & grungy. but maureen had a much darker inner turmoil and she’s much more rigid and stern and austere in contrast with mary who was happy-go-lucky, bubbly, free-spirited and lighthearted

Not to come across as a bad decision maker but (in reference to my reblog of Mary being Norman's unofficial adopted lesbian daughter) I’d genuinely invest money in some art of Norman with Maureen Coyle and Mary Loomis in front of the Bates house or Bates Motel looking like they’re in a family photo
Like this or something (but a much happier vibe for our favorite horror family)

Fairvale Prologue: A Timeline
Basically a self-insert Psycho V with shades of Gravity Falls. (I'm still trying to figure out what that means.)
Read on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/21487786/chapters/51211246
In December 1959, Norman Bates became the most infamous resident of Fairvale, California. His murder of Marion Crane led to the discovery that the deaths of Norman's mother and her boyfriend the decade earlier were a double homicide instead of a murder-suicide. Norman was also connected to two other murders within the decade between his mother's death and Marion's.
Shortly afterward, during the trial, Norman was found not guilty of Marion's murder due to mental illness. Norman had developed a second personality, that of his mother, after that first murder, and had committed the subsequent murders in the second personality.
In 1960, filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock directed a biopic of Norman, Marion, and the murder, based on the writings of Robert Bloch.
In 1982, Norman Bates would be released from the mental hospital where he'd been treated for the last 22 years. This would trigger two sets of events: Lila Loomis, the sister of Marion Crane, and Lila's daughter, Mary, conspiring to convince Norman he's resumed killing with his mother's personality; and Emma Spool, a local waitress, committing murders in order to protect Norman.
Until late in this series of murders, with the exception of the murder of Mrs. Loomis by Ms. Spool, it was unclear which murders were committed by which woman.
One such murder was that of Warren Toomey, the sleazy manager of the motel Norman once owned, having reopened it two years prior to Norman's release from the hospital, as a more adult-friendly motel.
Upon discovering that Emma Spool was the sister of Norman's mother, and that she believed herself to be Norman's birth mother, Norman killed Ms. Spool, preserved her body as he'd once done with Mrs. Bates', and developed another personality of his "Real Mother."
For the rest of that summer, Norman closed the motel in order to renovate it into something more like he'd remembered from when he'd originally run it.
Early that fall, the Bates Motel was reopened.
And the reopening of the motel would be Norman's second downfall.
A nun named Maureen Coyle, who was kicked out of a nearby convent after killing her Mother Superior during a failed suicide attempt, ended up at the motel. She was closely followed by aspiring musician Duane Duke.
Around this time, Norman began killing again under his "mother" personality. The final two deaths would be Maureen, who'd become a potential love interest, and Duke, who'd come close to exposing Emma's mummy to the world.
A local reporter called Tracy Venable discovered that, while Emma Spool was Norma Bates' sister, she was never Norman's mother. She'd killed Norman's father in a fit of jealousy because she'd been upset that he'd married Norma, before trying to kidnap Norman to raise as the son she'd imagined she'd had with his father. She'd been released from a different mental hospital a matter of months before Norman.
Tracy also discovered a shrine Norman had set up for Maureen. Norman was re-arrested and sent back to another mental hospital.
Two more biopics about Norman, regarding the events of the summer and fall of 1982, were released: One in 1983, and the other in 1986.
In 1990, a made-for-TV special was released. It was written by Joseph Stefano, the man who'd penned the original biopic.
While it's true that in 1989, shortly before the TV movie was released, Norman was released from the hospital again, and had gotten married, what had happened in this final film was greatly sensationalized by Stefano in order to include plot points he'd wanted to include in the original (only to be rejected by Alfred Hitchcock because they didn't quite fit the story).
Norman's wife, Connie, wasn't actually his doctor who'd entered an unethical relationship with a patient. Connie was someone Norman had met through church after leaving the Fairvale area post-rerelease. While she had gotten pregnant after birth control failed, it was never an intentional plan from Connie to have a child that Norman didn't want to risk inheriting a genetic predisposition to mental illness. In fact, the child (who'd been implied to have been born at the end of the movie) had actually been miscarried, and the strain eventually drove Norman and Connie to divorce.
The prominent flashback moments in the 1990 movie, ones that Joseph Stefano wanted to include in the 1960 movie, weren't completely the result of mental illness-related unreliable narrator issues. They were just sensationalized interpretations of how Norman killed his mother and her boyfriend in the late 1940s and two more women in the 1950s (though Norman's mental health was a factor, it was highly overexaggerated by Stefano).
While Norman did actually burn down the Bates Motel and his childhood home behind it, he never intended to kill Connie there as well. They went their separate ways post-miscarriage and divorce.
And so, it sat there until 2018. The daughter of Norman's former sister-in-law, Connie's niece, found the motel and decided to get a few friends together to live in the home behind it and reopen the motel itself. It took over a year, nearly two years, for everything to be rebuilt...
