Sunderland's Royal Jewel Vault (49/∞) ♛
↬ Queen Alexandra's Regal Circlet
King George, Sunderland’s longest-ruling monarch, was a man of extreme contrasts. He was a rugged countryman, who also possessed a keen eye for the arts. Throughout his life, he designed at least eight tiaras for his wife and daughters. The Regal Circlet is perhaps the most recognizable, having been worn by three queen consorts. The tiara features diamond foliage and spires intertwining with strawberry leaves punctured by sapphires. George finished the tiara’s design in 1871, just in time for Queen Alexandra’s 30th birthday. Alexandra wore the tiara multiple times until she was widowed in 1921, after which the tiara was passed to the new Queen: Matilda Mary. Maudie was never photographed in the tiara, but she did alter it a fair bit, adding an opal setting in 1924. The tiara was passed down dutifully for the next 30 years, but it only reappeared in public following the enthronement of King James II in 1957. Sunderland’s reluctant queen, Katherine, wore the tiara throughout her husband’s reign. Despite being earmarked by Queen Alexandra for current queen consorts, much like Louis III’s Diadem, Katherine defied tradition and continued to wear the tiara even after she was widowed in 1970. It was only after her death in 2018, that the tiara made its way to Queen Irene. Creation: Created by Albemarle in 1871 Provenance: 1) Queen Alexandra of Sunderland 2) Queen Matilda Mary of Sunderland 3) Queen Anne of Sunderland 4) Queen Katherine of Sunderland 5) Queen Irene of Sunderland Status: Currently worn by Queen Irene of Sunderland
