danielle couldn’t help the way her stomach twisted whenever jackie laughed, a sound so effortless and confident, as if she were born to be the center of attention. she was perfect in a way that danielle could never quite grasp—so poised, so popular, so loved by everyone around her. it wasn’t just her looks, though jackie was undeniably stunning. it was the way people gravitated toward her, the way she owned every room she entered, and the way shauna always seemed to gravitate toward her too.
there was a sting in danielle’s chest every time she watched them together. shauna and jackie. their closeness, their inside jokes, the way shauna’s eyes would light up when she talked about jackie. danielle always felt like a shadow, lingering on the outskirts of their world, never quite able to find her place. she loved her sister, but it hurt to watch her give so much of herself to jackie, to be so genuine with her in a way that danielle never felt she could be. shauna had always been her protector, her big sister who looked out for her when their parents expected so much from her. but with jackie, danielle felt like she was just... there. she didn’t have the kind of relationship with shauna that jackie did. there was a distance, something she couldn’t bridge, no matter how much she wanted to.
sometimes, danielle would retreat into herself, quietly observing from a distance as jackie and shauna shared whispered conversations and laughter. it felt like a world she didn’t belong in, like she was too much of everything in ways that didn’t fit the mold of who jackie was—soft, pretty, effortless. danielle always felt like she had to try harder, to make herself into something she wasn’t just to get noticed, but no matter what she did, it never seemed to matter the way jackie’s effortless grace did.
danielle’s jealousy wasn’t just about the attention jackie got or how everyone adored her—it was about shauna. about the way jackie seemed to have everything that danielle secretly wished for: a friendship that was deep, easy, without the strain of expectation, something effortless and real. danielle wanted that, too. she wanted to be the one shauna leaned on in that way, the one who shared those moments of unspoken understanding. but with jackie in the picture, that bond felt distant, a space danielle couldn’t fill.
she hated herself for it. for feeling this way about jackie, someone who had never done anything to her. but when you’re constantly in the shadow of someone perfect, someone so natural, it’s hard not to feel small.
and the worst part was, she couldn’t tell shauna. she couldn’t admit to her sister that she felt like the third wheel in their friendship, the one who was left behind. it wasn’t something you could just say, especially when shauna had always been the one who needed to be strong. the last thing she wanted to do was add more weight to her sister’s shoulders. so she kept it inside, the jealousy, the longing, festering quietly, as the distance between them grew larger with every passing day.
and then, when jackie died, the jealousy didn’t go away. if anything, it twisted into something darker. she had wanted so much of what jackie had—shauna’s complete attention, the admiration of everyone around her—but now, all of that was gone. it was as if the absence of jackie only made the void that much bigger. shauna was broken, distant, lost in her own guilt, and danielle was left standing in the rubble, feeling like a stranger to her own sister. the guilt that followed was suffocating. she hated herself for feeling this way about jackie, for not being able to accept that shauna’s friendship with jackie had been real, had been pure. now, with jackie gone, danielle was left to pick up the pieces of what was left, but the cracks between her and shauna seemed to grow larger every day. there was no one left to take jackie’s place—not for shauna, not for danielle. it was like something died inside danielle, too—her unspoken rivalry with jackie, her insecurities, her sense of being less than. but with it, came the realization that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t compete with someone who was no longer there. what hurt the most was that in her heart, she still wasn’t sure who shauna would choose if jackie had lived.

I'm sorry but i've never met a straight person who hangs a pride flag in their room, even if they're the most supportive ally in existence...
