Camp Half-Blood

The paths are set in cracked stone tiles 

(White marble, specifically, to fit the Ancient Greek theme;

Gotta coordinate with all the columns)

But also made, carved in trampled grass and exposed dirt 

And there are ‘set’ dirt footpaths too, so it’s hard to tell if there’s really any 

Line you cannot cross 

Trail you cannot follow 

Rules are lax at camp - the bar is at not dying//

Paths to the stables, canoe lake, dining pavilion, strawberry fields, Big House

Armoury, amphitheatre, climbing wall, combat arena

Some paths lead nowhere or are abruptly cut short

Some should never be walked to the end

The muddier ones have footprints: 

Light and patterned with varying depths from normal shoes

Heavy and even from armoured boots, after a

Battle training session

Or game of capture the flag

Around the border, muddy patches are more common

New arrivals are easy prey for the monsters; the earth there is often 

Damp, rusty, laced with the metallic smell of failure//

Failure also smells like pine needles

The pine tree has been standing for five years 

At the very crest of the tallest hill

Now it brushes the stars at night, branches spread wide 

Shade, peace, protection, a monument with no engraving, the memory of a sacrifice

Of a fallen friend

These are the reasons the wild grass is always flatter in streaks up the hill 

Everyone has something to visit it for

Nobody wants to tell the story to starry-eyed newbies

But they’ll hear it somehow

The tale of Thalia’s tree//

The twelve cabins stand firm and immutable as the gods they represent

Campers come and go

Possessions are brought and taken, lost and found

Building work is done, because gods know everything here breaks eventually

But the cabins, their numbers, their symbols, are constant//

In Cabin Eleven, you can’t see the floor beneath the sleeping bags 

A handsome young man jams his sword - a gift - further under his mattress 

A little too hastily to match the smile he flashes his siblings

(He doesn’t know yet, but there are lines you cannot cross)

In Cabin Six, a girl turns back and grabs her baseball cap - a gift - before leaving

The movement rustles the layers of blueprints on her desk 

She murmurs a promise to achieve great things to the sky

(She doesn’t know yet, but they’re on different paths)

In all the cabins, the pillows bear salty stains

The night echoes with screams and sobs//

The campfire

Where camp feels most like the home it’s supposed to be

Where the kids can say anything they want and be everything they are

Where the night echoes with music and laughter

Sputters and dies

Ashes stick to the stone like when a funeral shroud is burnt
