JOKE-OGRAPHY: Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit."  The priest in this cartoon asks his students what they think He meant.  The girl who raises her hand says her father only feels blessed when he's POURIN' spirits, which implies her father is a drinker.  The joke is that "poor in spirit" (Jesus's quote) sounds like "pouring spirits" (i.e. drinking spirits, as in alcohol), so the girl is confusing the two terms and implying that Jesus meant people who drink a lot of alcohol feel blessed.

Don't suck up your pride. Spit it out!
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:29-30

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to [genuinely] love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond [not with churlish indignation but] with the supple moves of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best— the sun to warm and the rain to nourish— to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. [God is calling you to a higher standard-- one of spiritual maturity, not immature pride!] In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re Kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.

Vigilantly protecting our hearts keeps our way sure
Today we will be looking at the core Bible principle of vigilance, and how the strength to stay on the right path begins in the vigilant commitment to keep our hearts pure. We will be reviewing some of the Proverbs of Solomon and a history of civil strife in Israel to help us understand how important it is to have hearts that are pure. The Proverbs contain a wealth of instruction and wisdom, and…

No butts.
___ JOKE-OGRAPHY: Jesus tells His disciples not to swear.  He means that they should always be honest -- that their yes should mean yes and their no should mean no without the need for fancy oaths.  Peter however, takes it to mean Jesus doesn't want them saying bad words ("swear" can mean either "take an oath" or "utter a profanity").  This might be true, but it's not what He was saying here.  Also, "butt" isn't a swear anyway, except maybe in the absolute most prudish of households.  Peter was just being way too cautious.

The Imam with craft, sets up a terrifying rhetorical trap. It begins with a rebuke to Christians for eating pork. Which the Christian responds poorly that Jesus defied OT law when he said "you have heard it said and eye for an eye", thinking that Jesus meant to invalidate OT prescriptions.
The Imam then quotes the remainder of the passage, "But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also." He then challenges the Christian to follow Jesus, and to offer to let the stadium full of Muslims to slap him. The response to this was basically, I should, but it would depend on the depth of my faith, and when pressed further, he said "I don't know".
It's a grotesque piece of sophistry, it was akin to forcing him to renounce a piece of Jesus' teaching under threat of violence.
Some different responses I thought of (some snarky):
"You first..." (meaning the Imam should be slapped first if he is asking someone else to be slapped)
Jesus said, "do to others, as you would have them do to you". I would not want to slap you, would 30,000 people here have cause to slap me? Is that because, although I have done no wrong to them, their religion justifies striking me due to my faith in Jesus?
Jesus has shown that his words are true, because he himself was beaten and killed without raising a hand against his abusers. Do you wish to prove him right again by beating me unjustly?

Daily Prayer for September 17, 2024: Psalm 99
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, you alone are holy, and there is no unrighteousness in you. You are the Creator of all things visible and invisible, and you are the infinitely wise God who brings the redemption of poor, helpless sinners to pass. You alone are infinitely gracious and merciful, not treating us as our sins deserve. You alone are great and rule over your church in splendor and majesty.…

The Promise of Light and the Power of Love: A Devotional
Matthew 5: 14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. In an election year, darkness overshadows light, as politics…
