so, i guess i should probably clarify a bit about what curses i'm referencing and how i handle the creature aspect of until dawn because the two coincide so heavily.

to start, i like until dawn, as in i am a fan of until dawn, so i can love it for what it is while quietly correcting a few things. that being said, i actually like to take out a lot of what they've established to leave a more confusing narrative. a purposefully confusing narrative for both us and the characters.

something i like about horror is leaving some things unclarified, leaving the audience guessing, even leaving the characters wondering what just happened. it follows the idea that we aren't quite sure what we were dealing with ... but we had a hell of time along the way.

so, the curses: i split it into two ways — the land itself was already cursed, which i leave sort of vague, but that's what we see affecting people pre-disposed (the miners, for example) to this curse before the main cast comes into the picture.

additionally, the washington family already came "pre-cursed" of something else entirely; their greed (thus, their hunger — it's never enough). i'm more focusing on the washington family here than the overall lore, which i don't really want to start getting into and rewriting as a whole.

i leave it to imply that this could have either started with robert washington or already existed in their bloodline long before robert was even born. the culmination of the washington family coming to the mountain sort of "marked" this family for life.

even if they could escape their own generational curse, they can't escape what's been activated for them. there's a really great quote from bsi by elizabeth where she says "what i have done cannot be undone. i cannot stop what i have put into motion." <- i think that's very applicable here. the events of what has been done before them will continue to unfold long after them. this quote can literally be used for any of these characters, from robert to josh to matt to mike to any of them.

this is why, while hannah is experiencing a creature transformation (thus what we see), she is also suffering "a hunger" that pangs from her own cursed line — that hunger of greed, of envy, of needing more, and of doing anything to survive. she is a survivalist. hannah isn't just falling to something outside of her control, but also something internally imprinted on her DNA.

which is what i have also happen to josh in his creature!verse. a transfer, if you will. it makes sense that the good older brother should take the pain of his sister. they share this same curse, this same "source", thus the same possession (being possessed by their hunger, their own innate and taught need for more).

aesthetically, i like the idea of a body essentially starting to shift into a super predator — the teeth, the jointed limbs to run on all fours, more animalistic. it's the distorted corpse aspect i'm featuring, the thinning of the hair, the loss of skin pigmentation (as the user has technically died, more they do not control their own body, thus it's almost vampiric), glassy eyes (thus shifting their vision into that predator vision we see in-game), the lengthening of the nails — which is where josh is sort "caught" between the two, once again ushering him into a new era of duality (as duality is a huge character arc of his, basically his whole arc arguably). again, i'd argue this is almost bordering into vampire territory. just not twilight vampires and more ... 30 days of night vampires? almost?

i've considered if they can even go out in sunlight, we only really see them at night ever, but that would be stretching more into comparing what lore was established over what i'd like to keep or edit. i'm not here to rewrite until dawn, just to be clear. i do have some inferences that josh is sunlight-avoidant in that verse, though.

as for why or where or even when this curse began? we don't know. that's the beauty of it. we're just as clueless as the cast, which also would make it much more difficult to fight them, which goes along with relying a lot on that diary for information. it's a transference of basically "here's what works, what doesn't, here's what we know" kind of vibes. trial and error. but as for the source? again, it's a cursed land. no one from "that time" is alive to give good faith one way or the other, so i imagine it's just a lot of rumor and speculation.

they're called creatures, monsters, and sometimes my characters might even call them vampires because ... they have no idea what is even going on. they're ignorant, and that's kind of the point imo. even josh's family is shown to disregard the land to build their dream vacation home. not even their real home, a vacation home. so ... in general? this cast? is not made up of respectful people. just look at how they treat and talk to each other if you need more evidence of that.

“What’s the fuck is up chat!” Matt yelled as he started the twitch stream. I sat on Matt’s lap, his arms resting around my waist, my blanket draped over the both of us comfortably.

Nick was sprawled out on Matt’s bed while Chris sat in a chair next to us, gulping down lemonade from the bottle.

“Chat, say hi to Y/n.” Chris smiled warmly. I waved to the camera, the chat was flooded with excitement and people spamming my name. “Hi guys.”

Matt looked up at me, smiling. One of his hands moved from my waist to my thigh, rubbing it soothingly. His fingers had silver rings placed on them, his veiny hands complimenting them.

I couldn’t look away from his hands, something about his rings were so attractive. Matt’s hand moved to type something on the keyboard, the way his fingers moved made me feel a certain way, my heart was racing.

Nick was ranting about something, but I wasn’t listening. I took Matt’s hand and gently fiddled with his rings. Matt looked at me, noticing how quiet I was.

“You okay sweetheart?” Matt asked me, whispering so only I could hear. I was snapped out of my thoughts.

“Y-yeah..” I responded, my voice cracking as I continued sliding Matt’s rings on and off his fingers.

“Whatcha thinkin’ about? Hm?” Matt taunted, he knew what he was doing. He knew exactly what I was thinking about.

I felt a familiar heat between my legs, my underwear immediately dampening from his words. “I like your rings.” I whispered, the stream couldn’t hear what we were saying because of Nick’s yelling. Thank god.

“Yeah?” Matt slid his hand under the blanket, resting his hand on the waistline of my pajama shorts. My breath hitched as I felt the cold metal of his rings against my skin.

He slipped his hand into my underwear, his middle finger grazing my soaked folds, I flinched slightly.

“Shh, if we’re gonna do this you need to be quiet mkay?” Matt insisted, I nodded.

i see this a lot all over the fandom, and i have written a lot of posts regarding this in various headcanon posts, but i think answering it directly will make more sense:

why did josh prank chris, ashley, and sam so hard compared to mike, jess, emily, and matt?

first off, i'm going to just re-explain myself over re-linking any old posts, but know i've written this before so i'm just referencing myself basically.

regarding jess and mike: josh was likely going to film them in the isolated cabin and use that footage to exploit them the way he feels hannah exploited. basically? a sex tape.

matt and emily feat. mike jess: this is the hardest for me. i think there are several things to address here ... a) josh had to adapt to it being mike and jess, not mike and emily, and had likely planned to isolate mike and jess into a situation of hooking up, getting emily to see it, and somehow using matt to do that because matt likes emily. b) matt and emily could never do the chris and ashley plot. emily is way too smart. also, mike and jessica would never take it seriously enough. additionally, mike and jess as well as matt and em need to do the mines / miner plot. chris and ashley are not physically capable enough. sam might have been able to do the firehouse thing, but not likely. c) i have considered maybe he had a separate thing for matt and em to lead them back to chris and ash? maybe? but i think we would have seen more of what josh would have done to them had he not been interrupted by the plot of until dawn lmao

so, yes. josh was going to prank those four. just the plot of the game interfered with josh's plot, which is a cover plot for the real plot of until dawn.

sam: josh sees sam as guilty. this is why he pranks sam. it doesn't matter if the player doesn't get that. josh thinks sam is guilty of betraying hannah, so he betrays her. pretty simple stuff. the cut dialogue between josh's masked killer and sam was more revealing and would have been helpful. he sees sam as someone that watches the pain of others from afar. he sees her as the bystander complex in his tier of guilt.

chris and ashley: i've made so many posts about this. josh sees chris as a) not guilty, b) not self-motivated (literally gun to the head to confess to ash, all the foreshadowing, etc), c) josh is putting chris in a hero position and ash in a victim position (hannah was the victim). he uses chris also to punish ashley a bit, especially revealing the tape to chris (thus showing josh never showed that tape to chris ... but also no one else was really being super honest with chris and josh either). josh sees chris very highly, no shipping stuff included in this btw. that's just a fact. chris knows the most about josh. so ... think of this, too. chris has to be there. so does sam. not having them there would indicate so fast to the group that something was up, especially if josh has distanced himself from them as is heavily implied. the entire group became fractured fast in that year between pranks. also ... the remake does one thing right with the prologue that always bothered me: fixing the positioning of ashley and matt. how was matt ever going to film from the closet. now ... the ashley problem. she literally sees nothing, her best angle is seeing matt. so idk how guilty josh finds her, he sees her kinda close to sam. guilt by association / not caring / victimizing hannah. the difference? ashley wasn't hannah's bestie.

if anyone wants more chris and josh explanation content, in addition to sam and hannah content, i do have posts addressing this much more in detail, but this is just a pretty good summary. josh is paralleling everything as what he perceives to be a 1-for-1 to what happened with hannah. he never wanted to actually hurt them, though. an ego death is the closest he could ever encounter. everything josh did was fake.

edit: regarding mike and jess btw you know he had them being isolated planned from the start, josh tells mike to go to the cabin he “told mike about” — josh already got the idea 💡 going before mike even knew it was going to happen. again, he likely was gonna do a cheating thing for mike-em-jess using matt to help lead em to mike and jess but josh had to adapt as the relationships changed.

put that shit away, man. she's right, he knows that, and the camera is snapped shut before it's even turned off. her explaining of their differences, of hannah's feelings and beth's loyalty, seems to at least reach him in some capacity. enough for him to start following her lead instead, at least. he doesn't make much of a move, waiting to mirror her image instead. matt would have made a good twin.

I’ll talk to Hannah. I’ll apologize, and…

Beth goes to bite like a rabid animal, but then Matt rears his head back, and her nostrils flare and her mouth opens. She goes to fight back, though she’d lose that fight against Matt, and then they both realize they’re being ridiculous and assholey. His face shifts and so does Beth’s, in tandem if not in reaction.

❛ Hannah, I made sure, is in my room. She doesn’t know. Or, I hope she doesn’t, she… ❜ She’s pulling a them on Hannah! She told Hannah to get her headphones, and she’s probably still searching for them. But she definitely lied, trying to make sure Hannah’s feelings didn’t get more hurt, but totally left her in the dark anyway. Another right to fix, once she pops the heads off of her friends like Barbie dolls. 

Fury attacks her senses at every corner, but she tries to breathe through the sensitivity, even though it makes her feel white-hot and immune to logical thinking.

What will she tell Josh? She’s holding the note, but Hannah has it seared in her memory. She’ll tell Josh, and then Josh will cause a whole scene. She’s no longer holding onto Matt’s jersey, but her hand lingers aloft in the air as if she still was. 

❛ She’s… she really believed it, Matthew. I know you’re not an eighteen year old girl like me and Han, but, she… really… I know boys don’t have feelings like us, but you’d be sad, too. I think once she realizes, she’ll be really sad and feel really crappy. It’s my big sister’s house, too. We should kick you out for it. Josh might. I want to. Send you back down the mountain in the car and then let you Uber to the airport. ❜ Sense slowly returns to Beth like flowing water after breaking down a dam. She breathes a bit evenly, trying to remember how to make her lungs fill. She looks at the camera still on Matt’s person, and frowns—hard and gritting her teeth. ❛ Won’t matter what I say, if you keep that camera in your hand. Put that shit away, man. You look so guilty with that thing. Your descriptor is rapidly changing from good guy to typical jock. I know you’re better than that. I thought. ❜
