it’s been a long day, and sleep has been a weight on your mind, but you know you need him first. imagine your surprise when you swing the door open and hear nothing but the sound of the creaky hinges.

where is he?

you make your way around the place, running into matt who lazily informs you of his having traveled to another wing of the place. this ups the amp of your curiosity and you make your way to where matt sluggishly directs you.

you crack another door open, and you find who you’re looking for, turned away and not noticing your arrival. you open your mouth to greet him but your queue of words dies down as you notice the slight shake he has.

“mel?”

he snaps his head up and turns to look at you, and your eyes widen like his at the sight of him. he’s crying. really crying, the stain of his tears and his slightly reddened cheeks make it obvious.

you walk over to him, the initial shock of his dying and replaced with an embarrassment that causes him to turn away from you. “i’m fine,” he mutters bitterly, but you can tell the harshness of his words isn’t directed to you. it never is.

“what’s going on?” you ask, gently prying as you move to sit beside him and try to get a look into his averted eyes. he gives nothing away, and you slump at his lack of response with the understanding that you’ll have to guess.

“near?” you mumble, which earns you a soft shake of his head. “something about the case?” he sighs at that guess and his head droops a bit further down as his voice comes out just as bitter. “something about me.”

your eyes soften as you catch on, and the movement is tentative but your hands come up and tilt his gaze back to meet yours. you examine the gorgeous face you’re holding still, saddened by the sudden epiphany that he really doesn’t see himself the way you do.

you could try to help, though.

carefully, you tug him down a bit closer to you. your ministrations are shy and soft, but his eyes widen again as he feels your lips against his scar.

since when has anyone treated him like this? the thought dulls slowly as he feels himself coming undone by the gentleness of your actions. those familiar tears brim his eyes and for the first time in a long time, he lets a few slip in front of someone.

it’s cold out tonight. it’s quiet hours, the lights are out, and everyone’s either asleep or holed up in their rooms working on some obscure project. technically, neither of you are supposed to be up here, on the roof of the wammy house. but when you stick a bunch of hyper-intelligent orphans together in a house for ‘gifted’ kids and proceed to try and control them, you can’t really blame them for breaking the rules. 

“do you really wish the human race was extinct?” you ask, gazing out at the english countryside illuminated in the moonlight. 

“yeah,” he says back, unbothered. he doesn’t even look up from his gameboy.

“really? everyone?”

matt shrugs. “i guess. probably be for the best, y’know? no more war, no more famine, no ill will. you know, world peace.”

He’s callous and rude, spiteful in his words. Impolite and inconsiderate are two words that often spring to mind when thinking about Mello. Yet you can't recall any times he’s spat words of cruelty your way, perhaps you just don't know him well enough, but his voice sounds more quiet, somehow less abrasive when he talks to you. 

His hands never has any propensity towards such a frivolous thing like affection. Never lingers on the small of your back, never any kind of inclination to tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear. The grip on your wrists both for when he drags you out from parties he doesn't want you at and for when he fucks you hard at night in his dark bedroom, is hard and unforgiving. There is nothing close to love or affection in his touch. You always feel the lingering pressure of his gloved, leather fingertips, another bracelet to decorate your wrist. 

He likes you most when you're prettied up so that you can leave him with mascara running down your cheeks and your lip gloss smeared into a pinkish stain across your mouth, the linger traces of it transferred from your lips onto his, and down onto your neck. Sometimes he wants to see you every night of the week, and other times he hasn't even texted you in months. You never know what goes on with him. You don't know where he goes when he disappears late at night and early in the morning, or even really what he’s up to when he’s unavailable for weeks at a time. Honestly you don't even really know why you put up with his constant hot and cold. Maybe it’s something in the way he spits out his words with such vitriol that you can't help but be captivated by everything he says and does, no matter the cruelty, or maybe it’s something in the way he spits in your open mouth as his cock splits you open. 

The grip of his hand, hard on your neck and wrists, is blatantly possessive, but you're definitely not anything resembling a girlfriend of his. You know for sure you aren't that, but you have no idea whether you’re exclusive or not, or even anything at all, and you know better than to ask Mello. Maybe he has a whole armada of other awaiting girls and guys, and you're nothing more than another body, blending into a ten foot wall of contacts in his phone. Something more than just an erogenous tease in the way he can't keep his tongue away from your throat, something more than just selfish satiation in the way he drags his ungloved hands across your bare torso, touching every inch of your skin as though he owns it. Maybe if you overthink things enough, there are small kindnesses within his tight leather exterior. L will know as soon as his feelings appear. Depending on what he's doing at the time, this discovery could be anywhere between a mental footnote and an outright statement directed towards you. He's become fond of you, far beyond a passing fancy or a momentary infatuation. He'll be requesting your input on whatever he's been working on, or making sure Watari knows to bring extra sweets when you're present. If you're really lucky, he might just feed them to you.

Near is surprisingly oblivious and needs to be told, probably by one of the members of the SPK. He thinks there could be something wrong with him at first. He knows what love is, but being in love is something entirely different and unfamiliar. All he knows is that he's expanded his world, making room for you among his card towers and plastic kingdoms. Once he's put his feelings together, he becomes more hesitant to watch you walk out that door.

Mello realizes how he feels gradually, much like watching dominoes fall in slow motion. The more time he spends with you, the more obvious it becomes to him that you mean something to him. Then, the more obvious it becomes to him that you mean something to him, the more attention he pays to how the two of you behave together. The time you spend with him becomes evidence and he knows that when those beads pass through his fingers, it's you he's praying for.

Matt has a sudden epiphany, probably when he's playing a game with you. He'll be having a great time, then he looks over at you (having as much of a good time as he is). Everything hits all at once: the warmth sprouting in his chest, the tinges of anxiety creeping up his spine, the contagious grin that spreads across his face to match yours. He might think of you as his Player 2 now, but don't think he'll go easy on you because of it.

Mello:

Mello is hesitant to confess for several reasons. He has a raging inferiority complex and worries that he's not good enough for you, he also knows his life is incredibly dangerous and could get you killed very easily. On top of all of that, being in a relationship- being emotionally intimate- is weird and scary to him. He's not used to talking about his feelings. He's spent his entire life in flight or fight, survival mode, and doesn't really understand how to cope with or handle a healthy, normal situation.

He's used to fighting back, to fierce and never-ending competition because that's how he grew up. He's not used to relationships that are fair and balanced. It takes a lot of time for him to adjust.

He does eventually adjust and find ways to communicate. And once he does, the relationship becomes very intense and passionate. Mello loves hard, he wouldn't give you up for anything in the world once you're together.

Matt:

Matt tends to have a very relaxed, go with the flow attitude. This can sometimes work in his favor, and it particularly worked in his favor when it came to confessing to you. The minute he realized his feelings, he just... said it. It's not that he wasn't emotional when confessing, but he wasn't hesitant to do it like some of the other characters might be.

"Hey uh... I think I just realized something. I'm... in love with you?"

Your relationship, similarly, tends to be pretty laid back. There's not pressure to be the absolute most perfect partner.

Unfortunately this does have some drawbacks. While he does care about your relationship, he can sometimes come across as apathetic. He's definitely forgotten your birthday at least once.

Near:

Probably wouldn't confess to you. To be honest, he would most likely try to either ignore or argue against whatever feelings he's developed. If you confessed to him, he would be confused and somewhat flustered.

He would have a lot of the same concerns as the other characters over your safety when it comes to his line of work. The best case scenario is that you're someone who works with him, and he knows you can handle yourself if something dangerous does happen.

He's actually very sweet and gentle once you're actually in the relationship. He doesn't have a lot of time to spend with you, but he does his best to make up for it. If it's not a security concern, you're allowed to stay in the room while he works, he might even let you help with a puzzle or model that he's putting together. He likes having you around to bounce ideas off of.
