Watching Malta Eurovision Song Contest live and updating myself on the Melodi Grand Prix result simulataneously. Sure am sad for KEiiNO but definitely enjoying the folky witchy vibes that Gåte are going to bring.

Malta, over to you, do not let me down. If Matt Blxck is not telling me to eat my bananas in Malmo in May I will flip.

Eurovision 2005 - Number 61 - Helena Paparizou - "Let's Get Wild"

One of the two song selection competitions for 2005 was called Eurovision Party - and it was something of a celebration. It included performances by other non-Greek Eurovision entrants including the Dutch and Andorran representatives for 2005, Alcazar from Sweden and last year's runner-up Željko Joksimović from Serbia and Montenegro. The latter was also doing double duty as one of the judges.

Greece and ERT seemed to be really going for it this year. After last year's third place, they wanted more. A new strategy was unertaken. They were going to select the artist and give them some songs. The public would choose which one. There were a number of contenders, but in the end they selected Helena Paparizou, former lead singer of Antique, who scored one of Greece's joint best finish in Eurovision 2001. She was specifically selected because of her Swedish background and the desire to appeal to 'northern voters'.

There were four songs, but one was disqualified at a late stage when it was discovered that one of the songwriters had made it available on German Amazon in 2004, breaking the submission cut-off. That left three songs for Helena - including Let's Get Wild

It's by Douglas Carr. Not a name that is associated with Eurovision and he's probably not hugely well known outside Sweden, but he was one of the founders of Cheiron Studios alongside Denniz Pop. He's started as a song-writer but became a producer and remains one of the big figures behind the scenes of Swedish music. On Discogs, he has only one release, but 645 writing and production credits to his name. He's only ever written two songs for Eurovision national finals - and this is one. The other was Matt Blxck's Banana from 2024!

It's a full-on girl bop with some ethnic elements and thus exactly on brief for a Eurovision entry hoping to go places in 2005. Following on from Sertab and Ruslana, anything with danceable, up-beat pop sensibilities, a strong vocal delivered confidently, preferably with some Eastern European musical accents was in with a chance. It's a polished production as you'd expect with Helena's assured performance.

However it failed to set Greece on fire. The jury place it second - just. Only two points above the song in third place. The Greek public were more fickle and did not respond. It finished a long way down the televote rankings in third place and thus Let's Get Wild didn't make the cut. That televote by the way, was huge. Over 250,000 calls were made to choose the winning song. Greece definitely had Eurovision fever.

Eurovision thoughts for today:

Norway: Yay Gåte!!! While my top choice would have been Gothminister, Gåte was my second fave and I really, really just didn't want it to be KEiiNO. I think it's hilarious that the voting change is what knocked KEiiNO out of the top spot tbh, yay Norway!

Ukraine: I did watch a lot of the unscripted Vidbir parts where they were waiting to see if they could get results. None of the entries really popped for me today, but I very much like Mélovin's song (even if his staging was sub-par). Not a fan of Jerry Heil and Alyona Alyona's song even though it's probably the favorite. I look forward to seeing who wins tomorrow.

Malta: Going into this I was rooting for Matt Blxck's Banana, but I got tired of waiting to watch it when it aired and took a nap instead. I just now watched the live performance, and YIKES. YIKES. YIKES. So I'm okay with Banana not going through to Eurovision now.

Spain: I didn't watch any of any of the selection process but I think it's funny that the winning song translates to 'slut.' How is Eurovision gonna handle that? I don't know but I look forward to finding out.

Malta are also picking their song tomorrow! I completely missed the semi finals when they happened back in November, but I’ve checked out all the finalists, and here’s what I make of them:

Denise Mercieca – Mara

Haley – Tell Me That It’s Over

Ryan Hili – Karma

Greta Tude – Topic (Bla Bla)

I’m not too impressed by this selection, most songs are sitting in the mid zone – stuff I might mildy enjoy but by the end of the song I am ready to move on. The only song here that I really like is Wild Card. I think it’s a great ballad, it’s certainly got the passion, and I like the way it keeps building throughout the song, hitting its climax right at the very end. Gail Attard is easily the best vocalist based on the live performances, she sings it really well.

I'd be very happy if Wild Card did end up being Malta's entry, but not so much that I'd be disappointed if it didn't. Honestly, I don’t really mind what they pick. Some songs could be elevated with proper staging – I could definitely see Loop doing well, Sarah Bonnici seems like a very competent performer even if the song isn’t 100% my thing – so I think there is hope for Malta at Eurovision, but nothing feels like a guaranteed qualifier.

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest Finalists Are.....

In the last four weeks, Malta gave us the 36 potential songs that they were going to give ONLY ONE of them the golden ticket to Sweden in May. However, those were 4 semi-finals. In January, we will be choosing out of 12 lucky songs which one will go to Eurovision.
