The Venatori were really struggling to keep Lucanis contained.
(A possible reason our favorite possessed Crow was suited and booted and ready to leave when we found him.)
A trail of bodies leading to him, a bunch of references to how much havoc he's wreaked, and then a big-ass barrier on the door where they've got him contained in a block of ice like the weirdos they are - baby boy was working on his own breakout long before we got there.
On arrival, we find a scattered trail of dead Venatori guards. Thanks to @wolfsong-the-bloody-beast, we know that somewhere around THIRTY FIVE dead Venatori are scattered around. He was BUSY.
Rook: Someone or something already took down the guards. Neve: Might work in our favor, but something's wrong here.
A bit later, we find this note and even more bodies.
Gee, I wonder why they didn't want to go in the possessed killer Crow's cell. Lucanis and Spite are pissed, they're not accepting visitors.
We find a response to the note, alongside the body of the previous writer (hopefully).
Bonus shot of possible Dead!Ovidius.

There's pretty good evidence to show Lucanis's last couple of days-to-weeks would have been enough to drive him to extremes in order to escape. This note was on a desk in one of the rooms - Calivan would have tortured Lucanis to new lengths in order to break him for Zara.
Adding to that, we know that either out of desperation to break Lucanis and accomplish his task, or needing to gripe to a colleague, Calivan wrote to someone named Felicia Erimond and received "just kill him already" as advice in return.
When Rook and companion finally reach the area where they've managed to contain him (inside of a spelled block of ice ffs), he's at the end of a longggg trail of bodies and behind a very serious barrier.
They need him contained.
Neve: A barrier. Whatever's in there, the Venatori really want it to stay put. Rook: Then we break through.
When we bust through the barrier and are finally facing down the final few Venatori mages between us and our Demon, look at this;
They're casting blood magic around his makeshift ice prison to keep him contained, but as Rook bursts in, they stop --- perhaps allowing Lucanis's escape a moment later.
The Ossuary mage/guard foremost is not interested in discussion when Rook offers not to fight if they'll simply hand over Lucanis. Instead, he leaps right to calling on the Archdemons themselves.
"Razikale, Dragon of Mystery. Lusacan, Dragon of Night. Hear your faithful call—"
Tiny lore drop on those fuckers. Razikale and Lusacan were said by the Chantry to have been "imprisoned underground by the Maker for usurping His worshipers.' At some point in 9:52 Dragon, Razikale was awoken and freed by Ghilan'nain, and Lusacan by Elger'nan. This led to the outbreak of the Sixth Blight. [from the wiki]
When presented with the possibility of Rook & co breaking Lucanis out, the Venatori reaches for the nuke button.
And I mean... can we blame them for being afraid of him? We've seen the bodies, Lucanis was kind enough to leave us quite a resume on the floor all over. Then we get to see him pop out of his ice prison like a demonic jack-in-the-box too and rain fury down on his captors.
Even without facial expressions, all I see in the body language of the Venatori is oh gods it's happening again...
And then they look up to see this charging at them, the last thing so many of their colleagues saw before they died similarly violent deaths. (Also, slowed-down, his ittle run seems less silly somehow, but the trade-off is that the funky physics of the sword he runs belly-first into do stand out a little more.)
and then THIS!
The face of a man who is genuinely surprised by who he's found himself face-to-face with. The first non-Venatori he's seen in 300+ days and not only are they not Crows... they're complete strangers who just waltzed into a secret underwater Venatori prison housed in a crumbling ancient elven temple and asked for him by name?
Not even our famous detective was able to work out his name on her own, so we know it's not information that's easily come by. Clearly this stranger knows who he is and where he was being held --- Lucanis has to be wondering; if that knowledge was out there, why hadn't the Crows found him? And who is this unknown person that just blithely walked in, asked for him by name and was cheeky enough to offer sparing the Venatori a fight if they'd simply hand him over?
It’s been three hundred very bad days for the Demon of Vyrantium and now he having a very confusing one. Plenty more where that came from.
---
In summary, the (updated) theory; (with credit & thanks to @wolfsong-the-bloody-beast for the excellent details they added!)
Lucanis busted out, got access to his gear and was well on his way to breaking out when he was finally cornered where we found him, contained in a block of ice.
When Rook bursts into the room, the mages maintaining the magic on him lose focus and the world's angriest Crow breaks out to complete his escape, finding himself face-to-face with unexpected help.

Hey everyone, it's been a while! I just wanted to pop in and say I'm moving soon, so I thought I'd post a few things. My materials are all packed up, so no new stuff yet, but all my jewelry, stickers, bookmarks, etc are available. After I settle into my new place, I'm thinking I'll have a bunch of new things posted and might even set up a little studio area, but I haven't seen the new apartment yet, so… Yeah, we'll get there when we get there lol.
I'll be living on my own then, so any sales will be very helpful. My prices are low and most of my products are unique. I carry jewelry and keychains I've made by hand using mostly reused materials, in all kinds of themes and aesthetics. I also carry secondhand items I've found on my thrifting adventures, and stickers and bookmarks that I've designed myself. I hope to have lots of new designs sometime after I move into my new place, too.
To find these featured items and many more, follow the description link to Royal Highness Creations on StorEnvy! 🩷 🖤

So in the fall I went from like fully a hundred percent head in the game with the church job to realizing job applications are due Now and working on them, all in the space of like. A weekend. Meaning I missed a lot of good opportunities that closed earlier in the fall and spent a while staving off panic that I missed everything and didn't have a wide enough net. Anyway given all that it's great that I keep finding more openings but also AT WHAT COST
#i have applied to a dozen jobs at this point (that sounds like none but trust me academia-wise it's A Lot Of Work)#and there's like five more i could throw in my hat for ... at what cost ...#my personal strength that is also a weakness is i can write a Wonderful cover letter so so fast but i Cannot reuse material#it takes my brain more work to look at one (1) sentence and attempt to rework it into relevant to the current piece#than it does to write a whole fresh paragraph#frankly it's a miracle i got that one article into publication shape when it was totally reworking an old paper#but technically i was mainly just adding stuff around the old paper

Mermaid Lily 🧜♀️✨
She’s going to see if Seychelles is selling some seashells by the seashore.
#hetalia#aph liechtenstein#hws liechtenstein#mermay#whitepeachrum#wpr doodles#i couldn’t get the idea of lily being a (material) girl's girl outta my head. like shes literally a reduce/reuse/recycle thrifting queen#(in my heart at least)#I like to think that she and Mish make gifts for one another with lost items:#Lily brings her treasures from the ocean in exchange for customized land items#i also REALLY loved the idea of a turtle mistaking her hair for jellyfish#and he turned out SOOOO cute#(i asked four people to help me pick a background and this seemed to be the contender. This is why I don't do backgrounds. Too many options

EARTH IS MISSING! / EVERYONE'S WORLD IS ENDING ALL THE TIME
this spring I entered the Elizabeth Soutar Bookbinding Competition held by the National Library of Scotland. The theme this year was climate change. I didn't win any of the categories (I certainly didn't think I'd win any of the Craft categories, but I thought I had a decent shot at the Creative categories) but I am very happy with how my binding came out anyway!

under the cut is the details of the binding and the process that went into it, plus a full list of the texts included.
this is a modified 3 piece bradel binding - a 3 piece bradel is usually made with leather spine with the spine attached to the textblock and the front and back covers added on after. there's another variety of a 3 piece bradel case where the spine and boards are assembled with a thin piece of paper to later be covered with a bookcloth. I wanted to use some leftover misprint cardstock I had (the same stuff I'd previously used to make paperbacks) and I wanted to print the titles directly onto the covers and spine (specifically I wanted to overprint the titles to imitate the existing misprint), and in order to fit it through my printer I had to have it in three pieces. so I assembled a bradel case as if it were to be covered with a cloth, only the cardstock I was using to assemble the case would also be the cover material.
everything I used to make this book was recycled or reused, with the exception of the greybeards which were new (I didn't have any rescued book boards from secondhand books at the time). the text paper is recycled eco-craft paper, the endbands are re-used macramé cords wrapped in green wrapping paper that came from a gift bag, and as mentioned, the cover material comes from a misprinted running sheet.
a few process photos of getting the case together:

in terms of content, I took care that not only should the binding fit the theme of climate change - by using recycled and reused materials - but the text inside should also fit the theme. there were a lot of considerations there because I could easily have just bought a copy of something like Greta Thunberg's speeches and rebound them, but I wanted the texts to be something that made sense to me. so I went and looked at the SFF magazines I read for climate fiction and essays, I looked for academic papers, and I looked on Gutenberg for older pulp fiction relating to climate change. once I had a selection of texts I pared them down to two categories, fiction and non-fiction, and decided the most fun way to bind them would be as a tête-bêche with fiction on one side and non-fiction on the other, and this then informed how the binding would physically turn out - the modified 3 piece bradel.
here is the full table of contents for each side of the book:

today's project was... eventful lmao. managed to make two patches until the stencil fell apart, which I knew would probably happen bc I didn't use the right material for a patch this size & intricacy, but hey I'm happy with the two I got out of it. :D
the green is quite uneven, but I love that it isn't! the different shades are actually pretty rad. anyway I can't wait to stitch these on my clothes c:
#I'm getting different material for bigger stencils so i can reuse my future stuff more often#you live and you learn#crafts#this design isn't my own btw!!! i found it on the world wide web and thought it was rly cool#for a next one I'm going to try to make my own design bc i think that might be cool

winter break has been kicking my ass fr... pinky swear it's actually like 90% done... I just need to like... finish it
and figure out road infrastructure because I took a history of car culture course and now know too much. there is an academic paper about 1960s canadian drive throughs on my moodboard. send help
literally every time I get one of these asks I just want to dump all the crap from my moodboard on you but like. does anyone want that. I will do it. to tide you over
#there comes a point in every wip I write where I need to decide what side of the road they drive on#this has happened before you'll never guess when (it's the car one)#if I bite the bullet and make this my stupid alternate universe: canada then I could include my bestie: highway 401 through toronto#<- obviously I don't drive lmao#I may have. a little obsession with overpasses and road tunnels. just a lil#there might be several scarborough pics already on that moodboard...#potentially also newspaper clippings from there and etobicoke... yes I did reuse my sources from that class as moodboard material#might plan to sneak in a lil film reference later. in a way#finishing ch4 is easy it's starting ch5 that'll suck#because then I have to research things that aren't highways

Day one of getting back to my bench!
The idea for this ring has been floating around in my brain for at least a month now. I'm happy to bring it into reality and now that I have I can think of a few new ideas/iterations to try. One idea is to make it again but use a clearish white film plastic instead of this brown and a little bit of something opaque and darker near where the finger slips in.
This ring is 100% fused plastic grocery bags, maybe 6 of them.
