Parasites Notes, Pt. 1
Parasites- A parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host organism. It gets it food from or at the expense of its host.
There are 3 main classes of parasites that can cause disease in humans: Protozoa, Helminths, and Ectoparasites.

Protozoa Parasites
Protozoa are microscopic, one celled organisms that can be free living or parasitic in nature. They are able to multiply in humans, which not only contributes to their survival but also permits serious infection to develop from just a single organism
Transmission of protozoa that live in the human gastrointestinal tract occurs through the fecal to oral route. This can be done via contaminated water/food or person to person contact.
Protozoa that live in the blood or tissue of humans are transmitted to other humans by arthropod vector, such as a mosquito or sand fly.
The protozoa that are infectious to humans can be classified into four groups based on their mode of movement.
-Sarcodina; the ameba
-Mastigophora; the flagellates
-Ciliophora; the ciliates
-Sporozoa; organisms whose adult stage is not motile

Since I love books & have been enjoying seeing the stacks, I thought I would contribute one of my own. I’m loving this new plant I bought last week, so I thought I would pull some of the vintage books I have in green.
From bottom to top: “College Zoology” by Robert W. Hegner (MacMillan, 1936); “Astronomy for Students and General Readers” by Simon Newcomb & Edward S. Holden (Henry Holt and Company, 1880); “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank (The Modern Library, Random House, 1952); and “Lowell’s Poems” by James Russell Lowell (Henry Altemus Company; undated, c. 1900) These books are interesting & special to me in a few ways. There is nothing like a vintage book. Despite the damage & wear, they still have things to teach us, stories to tell us. Both textbooks are full of beautiful diagrams (such as this one of a cell, or a photograph of Mars. Can you imagine? This 1879 photograph through a telescope was once the pinnacle of scientific technology.) I hope you enjoy. [Image description: 1) four vintage books in green cloth covers, stacked in front of a variegated houseplant and a pot of succulents 2) a book open to page 176 of “Lowell’s Poems” to a poem entitled “Impartiality” 3) the stack of books from the top, showing the cover of “Lowell’s Poems” with art nouveau decorative stamped binding, gilt, surrounding a panting of a tree in bloom 4) a reproduction showing a photograph of Mars as taken through a telescope 5) a diagram illustrating the structure of a colony & the various types of cells of class mastigophora]

Protozoa groups
There are 4 different groups of Protozoa groups. These groups are based on their mode of movement.
Sarcodina (the ameba)
They are a single celled blob of protoplasm and move with pseudopodia, slithering along by flowing their protoplasm forward into a 'foot'.
Mastigophora (the flagellates)
They move with a whip like extension called a flagella which winds spirally and beats or rotates in water to move the organism around.
Ciliophora (the ciliates)
They have hundreds of tiny cilia, often fused together in rows of tuffs called cirri, which beat in unison to propel them through the water.
Sporozoa
They depend on gliding, twisting and bending to move around, leaving behind a trail of circumsporozoite protein.

From Australian Geographic Image of the Week; April 13, 2017:
In The Shadow Of A Bell Jessica Leask
Congratulations to Jessica Leask on this week's winning AG Reader Photo for this stunning capture of a camera-shy juvenile Scribbled Leatherjacket (Aluterus scriptus) hiding behind a Red Bell Jellyfish (Crambione mastigophora) on Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.
“Blooms of red bell jellyfish often occur on the Ningaloo Reef after a few days of strong northerly winds," explains Jessica.
“If you pay close attention to the jellyfish in deeper water, often you will notice numerous juvenile fish finding refuge from the big scary open ocean. The association is generally believed to be a temporary symbiosis to protect the juvenile fish from predators and possibly provide them with a food source. It took quite some time to capture this image of a juvenile scribbled leatherjacket accompanying a red bell jellyfish, as the leatherjacket would try to avoid me by darting to the other side of the jellyfish or even up inside its bell,” she says.
You can submit your images to us directly HERE.

Reino protoctista
https://sites.google.com/site/sitevoltadoaoensinodebiologia/reinos-da-natureza/reino-protoctista
