Does anyone have any ideas or prompts for the Medicis' fic, (master of Florence TV).
I need despair and angst as much as possible right now. I need a gut wrenching fic where one of them dies or maybe even both.
I would be welcome to write about each pair in the following :)
The pairing of Simonetta and Giuliano is just beautiful, especially their ending. Just beautiful.
Clarice and Lorenzo is by far the best couple. Clarice is literally the brain of the entire family because without her ahem ahem "you go nowhere without my love" THAT LINE punch me right in the face. THERES JUST so much angst and akjdheiwks, how I love this series.
I also love novella and Francesco, I could go on and on about them but if you have any recommendations, please let me know because I am starving 🫡.

intro post (finally)
ive debated making an intro post because first off ive been on tumblr for two years and I never got around to it and secondly I am really really horrible at talking about myself because what is to much info and what it to little info and the cycle continues but im giving it a shot because I feel like my mutuals have no idea who I am lmao
HAI my name is Charlie im 15 (18+ I dont mind if you follow me but please dont dm me thank you :]) I use jasper as an online name kind of (at this point its just reserved for my best friend ace but I dont mind if other people call me jasper since I still love the name)
my pronouns are he/him but im also perfectly comfortable with common neopronouns (it/its xey/xem) if you wanna get funky with it.
im a self diagnosed autistic and ARFID (if you dont know what that is its an eating disorder where certain factors make you avoidant and restrictive of the food you eat and it has nothing to do with physical appearance. for me its linked to my autistic sensory issues(ALSO OCD NOW?!!? WHAT THE FUCK?!!?)) I have depression and anxiety and the only reason I mention this is because I relate my mental health to my fav characters in tv shows and books and stuff so if you see me posting about them like everything is connected lol
(my a03 is ghostwithfeet if you want to see me be silly and project my weird life onto fictional characters (I am the most inconsistent updater in the world please expect nothing from me if you even ask about a project it will scare me and like I turtle I will crawl into my shell never to see the light of day again))
my interests really vary about current hyperfixations but heres the master list
current hyperfixs
stranger things specifically Byler but mostly mike wheeler (this has turned into a special interest(I DO NOT support Noah schnapp or another of the other cast members who are in support of the inhumane actions the Israel government are doing. I am pro saving innocent civilians. I know that this can be controversial to be such a big fan of this show and honestly I have a lot of complex feelings on the matter but im autistic as previously mentioned and its my special interest and It won't leave my brain even if im not directly interacting with the media so im gonna yap about it on my blog thank you.))
also just Finn wolf hard for some reason (check out his band the Aubreys its awesome. also check out a recent movie he was in called when you finished Saving the world. it means a lot to me)
donna tarts the goldfinch book
old special interests/hyperfixs
the percy Jackson universe specifically nico di Angelo
the IT universe specifically reddie and Beverly marsh but more leaning towards richie tozier (see what I mean with the Finn wolf hard thing)
dead boy detectives !!
doctor who (I haven't even finished David tenants doctor yet so please no spoilers)
Alice oseman content (never read loveless or iwbft but ive read all of her other stuff)
paper girls graphic novel
other interests
the good place tv show
Kathleen Glasgows book girl in pieces
the walking dead comics including the clementine spin off graphic novels
um yeah thats all I can think of for now
my fav musicians/bands
florence and the machine
indigo de Souza
Kevin Atwater
searows
the Aubreys
sadurn
the cranberries
soccer mommy
runo plum
nep
lala lala
the smiths
hospital bracelet
Chappell roan
AURORA
Madilyn Mei!
Elliot smith
(my music taste is all over the place and is also very seasonal and I have a bunch of underground artists I dont listen to but I am here to give good recs I promise my playlists are fire)
we've gotten to the part of the intro post where im wondering if this is way to much information so sorry if I overshared idk but hope we can be silly mutuals or friends if you want (never be scared to shoot the friendship shot I would love to yap with y'all)
also since this is taking over my other pinned post I just want to put this as an honorary spot and let everyone know that my old pinned post was a quote from radio silence and that Aled last is me and I am him and the February Friday plot line is actually me and it makes me sick how much I resonate with that book

The last one was amazing I really appreciate it! Could I ask you to do a hurt/comfort for Nightingale, Medusa rider, Serenity? Like where the master is comforting them from fear or insecurities and gets hugs/cuddles/fluff please?
YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND!
Warnings: Hurt/Comfort
Characters: Florence Nightingale (Berserker), Medusa (Rider), Hassan Of Serenity (Assassin)
Nightingale
Nightingale knew she was a… difficult person to love.
She was a Berserker after all.
A Berserker with an obsession.
An obsession with cleanliness and healthiness.
An obsession that would drive her insane if she didn’t follow.
But you still loved her despite all that and how difficult she could be.
It was something she couldn’t understand, but loved about you nonetheless.
Even still, Nightingale had bad days.
Day’s where her obsession would take hold of her.
And on those days you would take care of her, ensure that she didn’t go overboard.
And when those days ended you would hold her as she managed to regain control of herself.
It made those days far more enjoyable than they would’ve been otherwise.
Medusa Rider
Medusa was aware she was… weird about her height.
To be expected it was something that was caused by her sisters.
But you were helping her with it.
Always praising her, always telling her how beautiful she was.
It was something she could never take much of before losing her composure.
But she would be lying if it didn’t make her feel wonderful.
Still, even with your words and actions, she was always afraid that you would choose someone smaller than her “Big” self.
She knew that was just an irrational thought that never wanted to leave.
But she was still afraid of it nonetheless.
And on the days this fear got the better of her, you could easily tell.
And the two of you would spend the day together, reading, watching TV, or whatever Medusa wished to do.
All the while, you would hold her and she would hold you as you whispered sweet nothings into her ear.
Serenity
Serenity was so deathly afraid of touching you.
She knew that her Poison wouldn’t affect you but no matter what, every time you held her.
She would always ask herself “Is this the last time? Will my Poison body finally kill you?”
And each time she would be happily disappointed.
Still, it was something that was always in the back of her mind.
The other Hassan’s comforted her about it in their own way, including the Great Founder.
And most of the time she could ignore the urge to run away and sob in the corner from fear.
Most of the time.
Not all of the time.
And on the day’s she couldn’t fight that urge, you were there, offering your hand to her, ready to pull her into your embrace, ready to tell her that she had nothing to fear, and that as long as you lived, she would always have someone to hold her, no matter what happened to her.

Tattoos (Florence Pugh x fem! reader)
Hello hello!!
I hope you all are doing well :) Thank you so much for the love and support on the last ff i posted, i appreciate you all <3 Also happy pride month!! 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈❤️❤️
I hope all of you enjoy this fanfic as well <3
Plz send requests if you have any <33
Synopsis: You’re feeling down so Flo cheers you up by letting you color and her tattoos <3
TW: none :P
I was lying on my bed, sulking because my girlfriend left me to go to work even though I practically begged her to stay. I had to get up at some point though, so I sat up and got out of bed. Our dog, Billie had awoken from her peaceful slumber yet again and jumped off the bed to come to say hello. “Hi, Billie girl.” I said as I scratched the top of her head. I changed into my clothes and started my day.
The rest of the day consisted of me doing work, cleaning our room, walking Billie, and just watching TV. I was about to order takeout (because I can’t cook for shit) when Florence walked into the living room, to see her girlfriend and dog cuddled up on the couch together. “Look at you two, all nice and cozy!” she exclaimed. Billie jumped off the couch and went over to her mama. “Hi, honey!” she said cheerfully. “You stole my cuddling partner!” I frowned playfully. “I’m sorry honey, I know you wanted me to stay home today, but it’s the last week of shooting, and it’s mandatory for all of us to be there.” she explained as she removed her jacket. “I know, I know. I just miss you being home all the time. Billie and I are bored to death without you here.” I said. “I figured you were going to be a little upset with me, so that’s why I bought these.” she handed me a pack of washable markers she had purchased. “What are these for?” I asked. “I figured maybe we could watch a movie and cuddle up and you can color my tattoos, I know how much you like to color.” she smiled. I don’t know how I ended up with such a perfect girlfriend, but I did. “I would love that, Flossie.” I replied. “Alright, let me get dressed quickly, and I’ll be right back.” I waited for a little before she came back into the living room with a sleeveless shirt on so I wouldn’t ruin any of her shirts. “I’ll make you beautiful.” I giggled, opening the box. “I know you will, my darling.” she said before kissing my temple. I happily drew inside her tiny yet beautiful tattoos she had on her arms before moving to her chest were her tattoo of a happy little snail rested, the matching ones we got soon after our engagement. I had gotten one facing hers in the same spot. I drew little red hearts around the tattoo of our wedding date on her wrist for the hell of it. (We also had matching tattoos of that one :3) I didn’t let her look until I was done.
“Are you ready to see the final result?” I asked. She opened her eyes and they immediately lit up in awe as she gazed at her brightly colored arms and chest. “I love it, baby. Thank you.” she haber me a peck on the nose and I giggled in delight. “Of course.” I smiled. Billie came over to us and happily barked. “And I think Billie girl likes it too!”
Thank you so much for reading!! Plz send any requests, I’m trying to start a master list so it’s easier for you guys to find your favorite works :))

Bill Viola
Video artist who melded the material and the spiritual and applied modern technology to Renaissance subjects
In 1957, on a family holiday, Bill Viola fell in a lake. He was six years old. Sixty years later, Viola, who has died aged 73, recalled the event. “I didn’t hold on to my float when I went into the water, and I went right to the bottom,” he said. “I experienced weightlessness and a profound visual sense that I never forgot. It was like a dream and blue and light, and I thought I was in heaven as it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.” And then … “my uncle pulled me out.”
It seemed an unpromising start to an artistic career. However, in 1977 Viola began a series of five works called The Reflecting Pool. Four years out of university, this was his first multipart artwork, its constituent films occupying their maker for three years. In the title piece, a shirtless man – Viola – emerges from a wood, walks toward a pond, makes as if to jump into it and freezes in mid-air. The pool registers his entry nonetheless, its surface rippling as though disturbed; the flying man fades slowly away; and, after seven long minutes, Viola emerges, dripping, from the water and walks back into the woods. The Reflecting Pool drew on the near-drowning of his six-year-old self. It was also classic Viola, its most notable features – slowness, water, a numinous spirituality – recurring in his work of the next half century.
It was the subaqueous blue glow of the screen of a Sony Portapak video camera, donated to his high school in Flushing, New York, that first attracted Viola to the medium. He was raised in the neighbouring lower-middle-class suburb of Queens. It was not, recalled Viola, a cultured household, but his mother, Wynne (nee Lee) “had some ability and sort of taught me how to draw, so when I was three years old I could do pretty good motorboats”. A year before his near death by drowning, a kindergarten finger-painting of a tornado won public praise from his teacher. It was then, Viola said, that he decided to be an artist.
His father, a Pan Am flight attendant turned service manager, had other ideas. Fearing that an art school education would leave his son unemployable, Viola senior insisted that he study for a liberal arts degree at Syracuse, a respected university in upstate New York. “And in saying that,” Viola would admit, “he saved me.”
As luck would have it, Syracuse, in 1970, was among the first universities to promote experimentation in new media. A fellow student had set up a studio where projects could be made using a video camera. Signing up for it, Viola was instantly converted: “Something in my brain said I’d be doing this all my life,” he remembered. He spent the following summer wiring up the university’s new cable TV system, taking a job as a janitor in its technology centre so that he could spend his nights mastering the newfangled colour video system. In 1972, he made his first artwork, Tape I, a study of his own reflection in a mirror. This, too, would be trademark Viola, bewitched by video’s ability simultaneously to see and be seen, but also by his own image. The I in the work’s title was not a Roman numeral but a personal pronoun.
Tape I and works like it were enough to catch the eye of Maria Gloria Bicocchi, whose pioneering Florence studio, ART/TAPES/22, made videos for Arte Povera artists. When Viola took a job there in 1974, he found himself working alongside such giants as Mario Merz and Jannis Kounellis. By 1977, his own reputation in the small but growing world of video art led to his being invited to show his work at La Trobe University in Melbourne, his acceptance encouraged by the offer of free Pan Am flights from his father.
The invitation had come from La Trobe’s director of culture, Kira Perov. The following year, Perov moved to New York to be with Viola, and they married in 1978. They would stay in the house in Long Beach, California, that they moved into three years later, for the rest of their married lives. In 1980-81, the couple spent 18 months in Japan, Viola simultaneously working as the first artist-in-residence at Sony Corporation’s Atsugi laboratories and studying Zen Buddhism.
This melding of the sacred and technologically profane would mark Viola’s work of the next four decades. Viola listed “eastern and western spiritual traditions including Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism and Christian mysticism” as influences on his art, although it was the last of these that was the most apparent. At university, he said, he had “hated” the old masters, and proximity to the greatest of them in Florence had not changed that view. It was only with the death of his mother in 1991 that he began to feel the weight of western art history, and to acknowledge it in his own work.
Having struggled with a creative block since the late 1980s, he found that the grief of his mother’s death freed him. Summoned to her side by his father, Viola filmed first the dying woman and then her body lying in an open coffin. This footage would be used in a 54-minute work called The Passing, and then again the following year in the Nantes Triptych, its three screens concurrently showing a woman giving birth, Viola’s dying mother and, in between them, a man submerged in a tank of water.
The first of Viola and Perov’s two sons had been born in 1988. Nantes Triptych was, or appeared to be, a meditation on birth, death and rebirth through baptism. If the subject was traditional, so too was Viola’s use of the triptych form. His references to the old masters would soon become more direct still. In 1995, Viola was chosen to represent the US at the Venice Biennale. One part of the work, Buried Secrets, that he showed in the American pavilion drew openly on a painting by Jacopo da Pontormo of the visitation of the Virgin Mary to her elderly cousin, Elizabeth.
Not surprisingly in these secular times, Viola’s subject matter was not universally popular. The art world was particularly divided. When his videos were shown among the permanent collection of the National Gallery in London in an exhibition called The Passions in 2003, one outraged critic dubbed Viola “a master of overblown, big-budget, crowd-pleasing, tear-jerking hocus-pocus and religiosity”.
The pairing at the Royal Academy in 2019 of his work with drawings by Michelangelo from the Royal Collection drew the barbed comment from the Guardian critic that “Viola’s art is so much of its own time that it is already dated, dead in the water”.
Predictably, he was more popular with the public at large, a survey at a Viola retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris showing that visitors had spent an average of two-and-a-half hours at the exhibition. Churchmen, too, were won over by Viola’s work, particularly those of the Church of England. In 1996, the artist was invited to make a video piece, The Messenger, for Durham Cathedral. In 2014, the first part of a two-part commission called Martyrs and Mary was installed at St Paul’s, the second joining it two years later. The project, thanks to ecclesiastical wrangling, had been a decade in the making. “The church works kind of slow,” remarked Viola, mildly. “But then I also work kind of slow.”
That mildness, and the religiosity of his subjects, may have led critics to underestimate the rigour of his work. Like Viola’s art or not, he was a master of it. His appreciation of the promise – and the threat – of technology was profound. Viola chafed against the primitiveness of early video, seeing each development in the medium as an opportunity to be grasped. The close-up portraits of The Passions series, for example, made use of flatscreen technology almost as it was invented.
By contrast, the binary nature of the modern world bothered him. “The age of computers is a very dangerous one because they work on ‘yes or no’, ‘1 or 0’,” Viola mourned. “There’s no maybe, perhaps or both. And I think this is affecting our consciousness.” The dissemination of video as an art form had not been like the spread of oil painting by the Van Eyck brothers 500 years before, he said, video having appeared everywhere and at once. True to these beliefs, Viola saw no contradiction in treating Renaissance subjects, and a Renaissance belief system, with the latest inventions from Sony. “The two are actually very close,” he said. “I see the digital age as the joining of the material and the spiritual into a yet-to-be-determined whole.”
In 2012, Viola was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. His work after this was increasingly made with the help of Perov, a fact that lent a new poignancy to the themes of memory and loss that often ran through it.
Viola is survived by his wife and their sons, Blake and Andrei, and by his siblings, Andrea and Robert .

Hi M, how are you? Coming after the high of Shogun's yesterday's win at the Emmy's made me wonder if you have a favourite historical movie or tv show that is underrated or in the category more-people-should-watch-this? Hopefully you indulge in this type of movie. 😊
For example, for me, one such movie is "Master and Commander: The Far side of the World" :brilliant ensemble cast all across the board, good chemistry between the main leads, engaging story, very good soundtrack, fx that still hold, 99% hystorically accurate 😂 but despite this not many have heard or watched this movie.
Have a nice day!
P.S. can't believe that tomorrow the last episode of AYS will air 😭.
Hi @shimako! Sorry for answering your question late, but I postponed it because I kept trying to think of a list. And honestly, I saw the words historical drama and forgot the underrated part so this is a bit of a disaster, but I'll make it work. Let's just say this is an incomplete list of tv shows that had an impact on me at the time and ages that I had when I watched them. And you'll see that I barely remember the plot, but I sort of know how I felt.
1. Rome
Is this underrated? Hell no! But perhaps in today's age of tv, a lot of people have forgotten about that show. Only two seasons, but it was among the first batch of prestige tv in the middle of the 2000s. I liked it so much that it made go to the bookstore and buy a book about Caesar. If I went through my Egypt phase in middle school, then my Ancient Rome period came in high school.
2. The Borgias
At the time of its runtime, I think it was pretty big. Although I don't think it won many awards. I also remember it being used as an example on scholarly papers about Hollywood using Eastern and Central European studios because of cheap labor and good locations. Budapest and Prague can replace Florence, lol.
The Borgias was naughty. And it had Jeremy Irons who is a fantastic actor in my opinion. Eventually they actually leaned heavily into the siblings relationship which I thought was daring. They went there 👀. And the costumes were so beautiful!.
3. The Tudors
I remember this show through the eyes of a 13-14 year old that developed a massive crush on the actor portraying Henry the VIII. This was like the rock'n'roll version of the story. And it was sexy. A bit over the top. A stepping stone for some actors that would become a lot more famous in the years to come. I think it was on HBO so probably not underrated at the time, but mostly forgotten nowadays.
4. Versailles
I can't remember if it's French or they talk in English. But it was lots of fun. And really gay. They didn't stay away from that. That's all I remember, but give it a try.
5. Taboo
This is that show with a really brooding Tom Hardy who remains like that throughout the story. But if you're interested in 1800s London and England's imperialist plan and its effects on colonized territories, this might be it.
6. Babylon Berlin
I don't know if this fits into the list, but it is a great portrayal of 1920s Berlin. A period in which artistic freedom and experimentation was at its height, but also juxtaposed with political unrest, creating this environment that would lay the ground for the rise of the fascist party. It's a german show, an HBO production and I like that it's not glamourized. You can see it in their clothes, their hygiene habits, their visible sweat and run down outfits they wear in clubs. It feels real.
7. Black Sails
I first heard of this when I wanted to watch more Toby Stephens movies/series but I almost stayed away because it was a Michael Bay production. Black Sails is so smart. At first, it might lure in the wrong audience, even based on the first trailer. It looks like a pirate show full of action sequences and machismo. And then you actually watch it and it flips that exact narrative. It is a direct critique of imperialism. It is also such a good case for any film and gender & queer studies analysis. But more than that, what really sealed the deal for me in what is considered a grade B series with grade B actors, is the meta-textual discourse on storytelling. It's about creating those pirate legends, of creating narratives to protect themselves against the empire. And all that is unfolded through brilliant lines of dialogue. It still remains a 10/10 tv show for me and the actual underrated one.

helloo ellie !!! 3) if you were to get lyrics tattooed on you, which would they be? (or tell about what you already have!) oh i've been thinking about "you and me forevermore" from new year's day by taylor swift forever basically !! i'm pretty sure i'll get that tattooed sometime in the next 2 years, it reminds me of the close bond i have with my sister <3 bc to me the song is just about someone who stays with you no matter what and supports you and that's my sister !! my closest person <3 one line that's also been on my mind for years is "let us cling together as the years go by" from Teo Torriatte by queen! that song is basically my dad to me so i would love to get it to signify the love i have for my dad and for queen, a band i was literally raised on <3 besides, i love the sentiment of it.
12) who is a band or artist that you've never seen that you're dying to see? oh i would absolutely die to see chappell roan !!! and i want to see jenna doe so bad but she's a small american artist :((( i'm actually really lucky because i've seen around 90% of people i want to see already! i'm excluding groups who have splitted up or people who died here bc these were impossible to see.
26) Is there/what is a song that you always associate with a movie or tv show? i've answered this before here x but we all know i love to answer with multiple answers so here's some more: the system only dreams in total darkness is THEE gene and alex song from ashes to ashes to me... also blinding by florence + the machine. on the other hand, drumming song by florence + the machine is legit the song for the master from doctor who, it's so fitting i'm convinced she watched the shows !! (and she's british like the shows are so its not too unlikely !!!) OH also hot blooded for bones of course !!!!

I still remember Mr. Walz’s AP Geography class. Seventeen years later.
In Mr. Walz’s class, we tackled the topic of sovereignty with the same intensity that John Randle tackled Brett Farve. My classmates' excitement for AP Geography might seem ludicrous to an outsider, but Mr. Walz had that type of reputation. He would start classes like most teachers, and we followed his lesson plan. But as a class, we eventually learned that if someone asked the right question, Mr. Walz would just answer. And then he would keep answering. He made no secret that sometimes he was not certain, but he would get back to us. We never really kept track until someone did. And then we all started keeping track.
Eager to engage with an adult who actively engaged with us, we quickly discovered that Mr. Walz was a total badass. He was a Master Sergeant in the Army National Guard — he also happens to be the highest-ranked enlisted officer to ever serve in Congress — and he taught in China through WorldTeach. This program was started in 1986 by Harvard University students and partners with governments to provide volunteer teachers to meet local needs and promote responsible global citizenship. Just to reiterate in modern terms, Tim Walz worked for an education startup in China at the end of the Reagan era. Eventually, both Walz’s spent summers taking high schoolers from the Mankato area to visit and learn about China.
A Map of China — Call Out to Joe Rstom & Mr. Ihrig’s World History Class ;)
But in 2001, Mr. Walz answered my AP Geography class’s questions and did not waste time. We talked about where Mr. Walz saw the United States from the perspective of his world travels. This was an AP course, after all. He did his best to respond but didn’t sugarcoat. He explained that what America had done for the world over the past few centuries was remarkable and that we should be proud. But our behavior as a country was not always perfect. As the bell rang for lunch, he summarized his thoughts quickly by saying, “I can’t tell you the where or when, but I think something will happen, and America may not be ready for it.” We went off to eat lunch. Adults say the darndest things.
The actual next day, per my memories, my daily structured reading was interrupted to inform of a plane that had crashed into the Twin Towers. Those were in New York, right? I did not see the events live on TV. But I didn’t have to. It was the only thing on the news for months after. Years after. Decades after. This July, I saw the planes crash into the twin towers while visiting the Fritz Koenig retrospective at the Uffizi galleries in Florence, Italy. How can one watch the wanton destruction of so much life and not see it live?
Every. Single. Time.
But two hours later, on September 11th, in Mr. Walz’s room, we were a tension made form. We had stayed in school, but speculation ran rampant through the halls about that state as a continuance. Despite this, we were also model behavior made form — because Mr. Walz was there.
We all remembered what he had said.
But, on September 11th, Mr. Walz didn’t know what to say. His statement the day before had been a coincidence. Like the rest of us, Mr. Walz had many emotions, chief among them a curiosity about what the U.S. Government would do in response.
As with many educational institutions, the events of September 11th ripped our school apart. Among other obvious topics, in Mr. Walz’s class, we discussed the League of Nations and why it failed. We discussed the United Nations and where it was failing. Too we discussed how the nature of treaties established within the United Nations functioned so all nations could make plans. How productive could a country be if they were chronically looking to see who might invade them or take its livelihoods?
You, the reader, might be well situated to ask, “How important are treaties anyway?” I suppose my only answer would be to relate that around June 11, 1776, the Continental Congress, while preparing to secede from Britain, resolved to create three committees for three tasks: The creation of the Declaration of Independence, the creation of the Articles of Confederation, and the creation of a “Model Treaty” to guide foreign relations. These men were going to war. And Treaties were right up there. Right near the top.
But I am still so grateful for that school year. Because Mr. Walz helped me understand something that was not obvious about treaties. At least to a teenage boy who rarely left Minnesota. During our discussions, I wondered aloud how any nation would be held to account if they violated their treaties. Mr. Walz duly responded to the current state of international relations, explaining the United Nations Security Council, warts and all. But something still did not sit right with me. If this system was the world’s most tried and true solution, why were there still so many humanitarian issues tremoring the fault lines of the world?
“Mr. Walz,” I asked. “Why does any nation have to adhere to these treaties?”
“You know, Kyle,” Mr. Walz responded, “it’s almost like we wrote this lesson plan together. Because they don’t.” When your parents are teachers, you see the work that goes into a lesson plan, and this was the best compliment I ever received in high school.
As discussed much earlier, sovereignty applies to nations but also people. Understanding that no nation, and no person, is necessarily obligated to anything is a life lesson. And Mr. Walz gave life lessons to his students. Because Mr. Walz is a teacher. And not just because it looks cute on a placard or as a tagline in some political ad. Mr. Walz was one of a family of teachers at Mankato West High School that dared to look me in the eye to explain the world we both lived in.
But yes. I got to discuss the nature of treaties and politics with the man currently running for Governor in Minnesota right after September 11th. Totally. Normal. Right? Well yeah, it was. He was my AP Geography teacher then. Because Mr. Walz didn’t use 9/11 as his springboard into politics — that event came years later.
As you’ll remember, Mrs. Walz is a teacher too. She most certainly knew about that idealized American Scholar Emerson so greatly cherished in his speech when Mr. Walz and a group of Mankato West students were unceremoniously interrogated at a George W. Bush rally after one student was found to have a John Kerry sticker on his wallet.
And that is all I know about it.
