Happy Masskara Festival!
I found out about this festival in an educational video on TikTok. It intrigued me. I know little about half or both of my ethnicities and cultures as a mixed child. So I went digging into Filipino holidays and festivals. I find some of them that are interesting and fun, and this is one of them.
The Masskara festival is about a rough time in the 1980s when sugar profit declined, as the provinces' main profit, during harsher famines. So the people of Bacolod made masks to bring positivity and to make income during those times. And now it's one of the happiest festivals as a reminder of what they've gone through and continued to share happiness.

“Yuhom” is a hiligaynon word for smile. Former Mayor Jose “Digoy” Montalvo Jr. also known as the “Father of the Masskara Festival” said “...because of the crisis and tragedy, the more we need a festival that will bring back the smile on people’s faces and make them dance.” #lagawsabuklod #masskara #masskarafestival #bacolodcity #bacolod #bacolodbased #bacolodcity #supportlocal #bacolodbloggers #lagawsabuklod www.lagawsabuklod.com www.facebook.com/lagawsabuklod www.tumblr.com/lagawsabuklod www.twitter.com/lagawb photos by @m.a.cubos_07 (at Bacolod City) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAkHJl4nK0d/?igshid=87893xvlmgqn

OCTOBER 19 ‘‘MASSKARA FESTIVAL’’
The term Masskara is coined from two words: mass, meaning crowd, and the Spanish word cara, for face; thus the double meaning for "mask" and "many faces". The Masskara festival was first conceived in 1980 to add color and gaiety to the Bcolod City's celebration of its Charter Day anniversary, on 19 October. The symbol of the festival - a smiling mask - was adopted by the organizers to dramatize the Negrenses happy spirit, despite periodic economic downturns in the sugar industry.
