Tired of living in a period of enabled overconsumption and the quality of everything being replaced for cheaper alternatives with only higher prices. ‪i despise how tiktok has ruined people’s minds so that they’re only able to mass consume media through 30s long videos, series with 3 seasons with 8 episodes of 30 minutes each and now albums no longer than 10 songs that can be digested in‬ one morning.
i want to enjoy things. ttpd had me gagged because with each new listen i kept noticing more new details and understanding each song better, which made listening to it so fun and hooking. short albums are fine, but i don’t think they should be the standard… of course everyone is allowed to release whatever the fuck they want but it’s unfair that artists now get criticized for putting out long albums, it’s not our fault you can’t sit through an 1h-2h long album

tumblr ate the original version of this post, but tl;dr i'd gotten to thinking about the 'don't just like, reblog!!1!' discourse that seems to have intensified lately, and i think for me the issue is basically that artists seem to want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to whether they're our peers, or actual professionals?
like—fundamentally my blog is my space to express my own taste in. period. that's what it's fundamentally primarily for. ergo i'm not going to reblog things i have mixed feelings about, because that would be misrepresenting my taste, unless i can append critique to them in order to clarify where my taste diverges. which i can do, with professional work!
but i'm pretty sure most tumblr artists would be upset to find criticism popping up in their notes. which is totally understandable! but like. if i have to discuss your work politely, rather than honestly, because you're a peer who's in the room with me—then yeah, if i don't like it enough, i won't reblog it, because if i don't have anything good to say, i shouldn't say anything. which isn't how we handle professional art! but it is how we handle our peers.
and it just seems to me like—you've got artists out here going 'i'm a struggling amateur, so you should do me a solid and toss me some free publicity! 🥺' but also 'i'm trying to make a living at this, so you should do me a solid and toss me some free publicity! 🥺' and i just feel like, which is it? because if you're my peer, then i'm only going to discuss your work publicly if i like it enough, because to do otherwise would be rude. and if you're a professional, then i don't owe it to you to subsidize your business by providing free advertising! if a business's products don't actually organically appeal to people, it should go under!
which maybe sounds harsh, but like. i have no desire to see making art restricted in any way. people should make whatever art they like, regardless of audience or quality, and derive joy from that! but like. if you want to make a living from your art, you should, actually, be making work of a quality that will speak for itself, in which case you shouldn't need to browbeat people into recommending it??

I miss when Hulu used to have a comments section under every video, there was always something interesting (in a human behavior curiosity kind of way) about scrolling down to see usually an absolutely ridiculous collection of people having a rowdy open forum discussion about something you just watched that you had a completely neutral non-reaction to 
#unfortunately - everything still trends toward homogenization#people especially tech comanies can't just have their own fucign unique thing. they have to look and act like every other service#to ''''compete''' apparently (even though like... wouldn't having unique features be instead a NOVEL draw to your specific product? wouldn't#you want to stand out???)#Like OKCupid completely over-simplfying their site into bare bones sleek nothingness and taking away all the features that made it unique#in any way (high customization - various personality ranking scales and a LOT of various visible data/information) .. because oh yeah#actually we have to be tinder and just quick emoji blurb swipe swipe#Hulu trying to be netflix and taking away anything that made it stand out in any posiive way (comments section.. other things that I forget#since I've been using it since like 2009 or something)#Youtube.... everything youtube does.... god.......#All social media sites are exactly the same now with extremely minor differences and even then still frequently implement samey#features to try and close those differences#etc. etc.#ANYWAY . i think also the hulu comments sections were facebook linked - like..one of the ways you could actually verify yourself to#leave a comment was having a facebook login (AT LEAST in like 2010.. The war in Sudan has reached its 10th month. The war has been met with a global indifference or there has been no desire to act from many world leaders.
8 million people have fled their homes and millions of Sudanese people have emergency food insecurity, with 5 million people on the brink of famine. even the neighbouring country Chad has had to declare a food insecurity emergency due to the mass amount of Sudanese people that have fled to Chad. (By no fault of their own of course)
Faced with a media blackout which is over a week at this point we need to continue to amplify the voices and plight of the Sudanese people.

The answer to both questions is the same. We know that book publishing moves at a slower timescale than AI. So the book is about the foundational knowledge needed to separate real advances from hype, rather than commentary on breaking developments. In writing every chapter, and every paragraph, we asked ourselves: will this be relevant in five years? This also means that there’s very little overlap between the newsletter and the book.
