That soft, otherworldly glow that lights up winter like no other season cast its spell over Dunkard Creek this morning. One of the loveliest hikes I've taken in many years.

fellow usamericans please please please please check your state's COVID wastewaster levels.
as of Aug. 28 2024, here's how the regions look:
in the USA as a whole we are at an 8.68 and trending up
in the Northeast, we're at 6.92 and trending up
in the South, we're at 10.17
in the Midwest, we're at 6.78 and trending up
in the West, we're at 12.28
But these are just averages. It's vital to check YOUR SPECIFIC STATE/TERRITORY, as well as any ones you are planning on traveling too. D.C, for example, is at 15.68.
the reason people are still talking about COVID is not just because of vibes or trauma. we have actual numerical data showing that we are far from over with this disease. wear a mask, get another booster, and bookmark the CDC's website so you can check it weekly.
#also. yes for some reason they considered delaware DC and maryland 'southern'#literally who fucking cares about the mason dixon line!!!!#ALSO PUERTO RICO WELCOME TO THE NORTHEAST I GUESS#m.

US geography
Take a US map, draw a line along the Mason-Dixon line, then identify the states in the bottom of this 'happiness' index. Notice anything?

Serious question what's up with everyone making fun of country nowadays and invoking tropes I don't think I've even seen
"it's backwards and conservative" Do you have any familiarity with Johnny Cash? An activist for Native American rights whose iconic image is the Man In Black as a symbol for the disadvantaged? The songs Folsom Prison Blues? Man In Black? And I know Tumblr loves Dolly Parton as a person, for good reason - 9 To 5, her signature workers' rights protest, isn't quite country, but most of her discography is.
"it's too religious" Fair - several musically excellent songs lean too heavily into Christian themes for me to enjoy as a Jew (though I'm sure Christian audiences love them, progressive ones too). But many of those religious songs evoke more universally applicable ideas of brotherhood, hope, and justice - and are those really things worthy of mockery?
"the emotions are shallow" I See A Darkness is one of the most authentic portrayals of depression in music I know of. Many country songs have themes of love, heartbreak, and drama/tragedy - but those are common to music across nearly all genres, even if specific songs don't land for everyone.
At the end of the day it's just a music genre, yes, but one that does have emotional significance for many people, cultural significance for many others, and as much diversity in content and performer talent as any genre of entertainment.
And it's not very fun to have cherished childhood memories and music that genuinely resonates with you mocked just about everywhere you turn aside from people who are actually fans of it.
#not liking the sound or style of course is a matter of taste#there are plenty of musical genres I have no problem with but can't get into#inspired by a post going around which was plenty funny and 'satisfying'#but the punchline was getting revenge on someone annoying by forcing them to listen to country#to be clear I have no cultural stake in this#I'm Jewish have always lived in Asia and my American family members are just barely under the Mason-Dixon line#just grew up on music like Cash and Parton and am currently obsessed with a much lesser-known folk/country singer#I'm sure for people who do see it as their cultural heritage it's often still more unpleasant to see it mocked#also I'm trying to write a folk/country album myself#and when I told my d&d crowd the first reaction any of them gave was 'country? I feel sorry for your taste'#so uh maybe don't mock things that hold emotional value for people#is a lot of the thesis here

I love when Meg tells the story about getting called a stallion for the first time because it makes me think about when I was in North Carolina for the summer at 16 and had the first boy say that to me in publix lmaoooo

One thing that I've noticed in myself that I really hate is that I no longer enjoy going on long drives. If you asked me even a year or two ago, I would have told you I loved doing long drives for whatever reason, if there was one. Now, I'm like, "If I have to drive more then 45 minutes or more one way? Kill me."
#personal#I don't say this for obvious reasons either like gas prices and whatnot.#I used to love going on drives even to just clear my mind. What happened to me?#When I got so mad at my mom one time I got in my car and drove all the way down to the Mason Dixon line which is like a 90 minute drive.#All because I was angry and I didn't realize it until I saw the 'Maryland welcomes you.' sign LMAOO#I used to have to have to commute 45 minutes each way for work when I lived with my mom and boyfriend back in like 2019 too.#And now my mom is willingly asking me to drive FOUR hours each way for a weekend in April... I'm like 'UH- Can we carpool?'

Early October on Dunkard Creek at Mason-Dixon Historical Park. Even with the first frost just around the corner, life abounds along the stream, including: sulphur shelf fungus (Laetiporus sulphureus), more commonly known as chicken-of-the-woods; fall phlox (Phlox paniculata); and the flamboyantly-beautiful New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae). The park is also at the eastern-most range of the thorny-trunked honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), whose common name derives from the sweet taste of its edible fruit pods.

awfulest thing i've learned this week: you can't reliably find cold unsweet tea north of the 49th parallel noooooo
#i thought everywhere north of the mason-dixon line was safe!#and yet.#*so* much peach tea here.#*so* much lemon tea here.#and yet not a single drop of Tea As Black As My Soul And Cold As My Heart#:(#(i am able to survive in my native Kentucky becausein keeping with its border state status#they always have both sweet and unsweet available in restaurants lol)

Nothing is more fun than watching people complain about how there aren't enough flawed female characters out there until someone actually writes one and all they do is complain about how annoying they are
#i started a new show last week and one of the protags has 3 immediate family members who are emotionally volatile addicts#and i came on here to look through some tags and everything is full of people complaining about how irritating shes being#bc shes lashing out at other people/ being immature in her relationship#please do write a repressed queer woman from below the mason dixon line but Dont You Dare Show How That Would Impact Her#Anyway TM its especially egregious with the way ive seen people online talking about this one

it's really funny seeing people say "the south is actually only these states:" and then go on to list wildly different states that basically cover the entirety of the u.s. that isn't the northeast, great lakes, or west coast.
none of these people are wrong exactly bc regions can be more than one thing, and regions often overlap. but it is funny that people fight about it.
#my concept of 'the south' has been shaped by living in florida#and to a certain extent maryland (the portion of the state that isn't below the mason dixon line tries to compensate-#-by being aggressively SouthernTM like bro you are mid atlantic just accept it)#but anyway my point is that places like texas or tennessee or even mississippi are super foreign to me#but they are still very much the south#just a wildly different flavor of it#i grew up on the shore and in swamp land#deserts and moutains and plains are not what i picture when i think of the south#but then i'll see smth in that setting and it's like oh yeah that too is the south lol#personal
