tfw you realize that kodama and kyouko had polar-opposite upbringings yet it caused them to have almost the exact same “dog-eat-dog world” perception of life.
#interestingly kyouko’s dad’s death was what caused her to sink into that while kodama’s dad’s death snapped him out of it#bokurano#puella magi madoka magica#masaru kodaka#kyouko sakura#kyoko sakura

Kaito is supposed to be a pretty problematic person, it's just that NIS America censored it. He uses slurs in canon. Combine that with his perception of masculinity that he's trying to "help" Shuichi with just being incel gymmaxxing and his whole thing with Maki, like... yeah, he's supposed to be the Toxic Masculinity Deconstruction that's present in every single work in the series besides the books (Mondo, Fuyuhiko and Souda, Masaru, Juzo). But given all the terrible decisions and changes NIS America made, which led to them being fired by Spike Chunsoft in 2020, it's missing.
Fun fact: Chihiro is never gendered as male after the reveal in the Japanese. All that discourse and rage? NIS America's fault, not Kodaka.

I know that absolutely everyone wants to crap on how the Warriors of Hope were handled, but to be frank, Masaru's breakdown is one of my favourite moments in the entire series, and resonates with me on a personal level. There are not words to describe how much I love it, and love Kodaka for giving me it. (even if I also hate him.)
Someone track down his English VA and give them a raise, pronto!

A mockup of an alternate version of the first one of the eight covers for Bokurano’s original DVD release, which can be found here (http://www.gonzo.co.jp/archives/bokurano/goods.html).
The general look of this piece is a homage to old surrealist art, and was also inspired by Kikuo’s music.
As for the flowers featured, they are dandelions, because while I was reading the r/anime rewatch threads for Bokurano, someone pointed out that the leaves of the flowers resembled Kodama’s pilot tattoo. The water obviously represents the initial supposed cause of Waku’s death.
Waku and Kodama’s colors were picked arbitrarily, but for some reason I had Sayaka and Kyouko from Madoka Magica in mind lmao. Their expressions represent what they felt when they died.
Waku died in happiness over defeating his opponent, and an almost calmness and hope about his troubles. Kodama died losing the one person he truly loved, and with it his sense of self, hence why he lacks a face. Waku is bleeding from his head and mouth because I thought it would add some “style” to the piece.
This was made entirely in Procreate.

How about our boy Nagisa Shingetsu? ^.^
You mean the saddest boy to ever exist? Sure, let’s talk about Nagisa!
My first impression of him was that if I was a kid, he would be the kid I would shove into a locker (I was a very mean kid lol). His design makes him look like such a square in my opinion. But past that, they make it pretty clear that he’s the overachieving serious type of the Warriors of Hope, the one who actually wants to make a difference while the other ones are kinda messing around like kids. I got the impression that he was the type of kid to be like “I’m the mature one, I swear! I’m so above playing around” which makes him very endearing to me. I think all older siblings (which I am) have a need to be the serious leader in charge.
Of course, I find it very interesting that while he does strive to be serious and goal-oriented, he (as noted by Kodaka and the writers) is probably the most “childish” of the Warriors of Hope. And I think that’s in his hopefulness and ideals. Unlike Kotoko, he allows himself to believe in Monaca and to be manipulated by her because he has a little boyish crush and because he genuinely cares about the other kids. He’s the one who most notably cares for Jataro when the others find him disgusting. I think deep down inside (and maybe this is confirmed) that he knew his hopes for a children’s paradise were never going to come into fruition but he wanted to try so badly just like a kid playing pretend.
Chapter four is so interesting because when the Monokuma kids start turning on him, he freezes up and goes completely immobile until you take care of the attackers. His trauma is on full display constantly. His fear of overstepping the lines of those around him, his need to be accepted, his constant edging around confrontation because it terrifies him… Nagisa is just a horrifically sad story of a boy whose parents saw him as a commodity and status symbol instead of a human being.
I think the thing to take away from Nagisa in retrospect is what he says to Toko and Komaru in Chapter Four about how society (and religion and other factors) expect children to just forgive their parents for being fucking terrible and to just live with abuse. That’s true. There is a thing in society (and particularly Japanese society) where you’re meant to just accept things and respect your parents and family no matter what, even if they’re destroying and abusing you everyday. As Nagisa says, none of this may have happened if the children were just allowed to fucking hate their parents! But instead, society repressed them because that’s easier and more acceptable from children. They stuck the Warriors of Hope in the troubled kids class. The police brought Masaru back to his abusive father. The entertainment industry continued to exploit Kotoko. Jataro was neglected until he began to believe he was ugly and only deserved repulsion.
Nagisa is smart. He knows what could have happened to make this all better and I think there is a small piece of him that hoped desperately that society and adults were better so he didn’t have to be this way. He’s the only one to have regrets about killing his parents despite what they’ve done to him. This is why he was probably labeled as the most childish among the Warriors of Hope. Because he really did have that optimistic idealism in his heart which added to a much more horrific and emotional breakdown for him in the end.
But in a sense, I must repeat that as much as I really feel for Nagisa, I think he needed to breakdown and get defeated like that. As I said, sometimes things really do just need to fall apart before they start to get any better. And they do. The kids come back at the end and in the anime, Nagisa starts to put some trust in Komaru and Toko to tell them about Monaca and to ask them not to hurt her. It’s a small change, but it is the first step and something incredibly significant for Nagisa to open himself up to trust again.
Also, not strictly important, I think it’s pretty funny how he came to beat up Servant with his robot after that intense scene of Komaru and Toko reaching this moment of beautiful understanding. Perfect writing imo.

since my last post about Danganronpa trauma stuff did so well, here we are again
its Kazuichi time
There are two people in the fandom: people who kin Kazuichi, and people that hate him. But both of these people, I feel, severely mischaracterize him.
The people who hate him for how he acted in game see him as nothing but a simp, and for good reason. He acted horribly to Sonia in the game and anime, and to his classmates. With those people, he's often characterized as a gross simp gamer boy, who can do no right. But these people often diminish his trauma.
However, the people who kin him see him as the exact opposite. He's a traumatized uwu soft boy who can do no wrong. They blame Sonia for how he acted in game, and act like he has no flaws. Yes, Sonia could've been more forward. That doesn't mean that she's responsible for how other people act.
Kazuichi's actions toward Sonia in the game, I believe, may be a coping mechanism for the stress of the game. His actions toward her progressively get worse as the end of the game nears, aka as more people die, and the stakes get higher. So, he pretends to like a girl so he doesn't have to come to terms with the tragedy he's experiencing.
Another hot topic in the fandom is whether he was abused or not. Most of the people who argue that he wasn't abused seem to have a few common arguments. The first is that it was an overexaggeration when he said that his dad "beat the shit out of him". If he was doing that, then he would probably have a bigger emotional reaction that putting his hands behind his head and smiling. Keep in mind, he was about thirteen at the time that this supposedly happened, so that puts spanking out of the picture. Another argument is that Kodaka doesn't see that behavior as abuse. But, in the game Ultra Despair Girls, Masaru Daimon talks about his physical abuse, which seemed to be on par with Kazuichi's.
I feel that the reason that the Kazuichi haters argue that he wasn't abused because of the stereotype that abuse victims have to be good people, pitiable people. When the victims act in dishonorable ways, then their abuse is often discredited.
Back to my point earlier, about Kazuichi coping with the stress of the killing game with his "crush" on Sonia, you might argue that because of his behaviors in the anime, a supposedly un-stressful scenario, that it is not a coping mechanism, and that he's just like that. But, what if his time at Hope's Peak was stressful? If you look through his backstory, it seems that no one has ever treated him well. His father abused him, his mother seems absent, as anyone who treated him well would probably be something he would talk about. His only friend betrayed him, and he doesn't seem to fit in with the punk crowd. If he never had anyone treat him well, the same treatment that everyone get's at Hope's Peak, wouldn't this major change stress him out?
TLDR: Kazuichi is not a good person, but he is an abuse victim. His treatment of Sonia was a coping mechanism.

What’s your opinion on all 5 of the WoH
I like all of them! Although, as for my opinions on them as individuals...
Masaru - Exactly the kind of little boy I wouldn’t want to be around either as a kid or an adult. He’s fine but I just wouldn’t have the patience. This goes for all the WoH though because they’re troubled.
Jataro - He’s cute but a headache in a different way. I guess he’d be interesting to talk to if nothing else. I’d take him over Masaru.
Nagisa - A baby Matsun!!! Who fucking dressed him?! He’s wearing such a hideous getup!!! But he’s such a good, sad bean.
Kotoko - BABY. BABY GIRL. God, if only Kodaka wasn’t a fucking weirdo about her because she’s very good. Angry and protective. I love that lots.
Monaka - ALSO BABY. BABY GIRL. Kodaka was a fucking weirdo about her too, but I’d still die for her. She’s a rotten princess and my favorite dgrp villain by leaps and bounds. I’ve gone into more detail in this post.
