There's something so surreal about this — the vaguely sulfurous stench clinging to Mary's skin, Lilith's scaled, winged body limp across her lap, the distant, tinny sound of Beatrice's voice over the phone cradled between Mary's cheek and shoulder. "We're on our way — how bad is it?"

Mary reaches out, gingerly brushing her fingers against the slowly closing but still glowing ember-like wounds on Lilith's abdomen, hissing when her fingers burn as sure as touching hot coals.

"Mary?" Beatrice's voice in her ear again, more urgent, but Mary can hardly pay any attention to it at all because Lilith is groaning in her lap — a sound so pitiful and weak and beautiful Mary has to swallow hard not to cry.

And then Lilith is blinking woozily up at her, a wobbly, punch-drunk smile curving her cracked lips, something small and honest that makes Mary want to collapse into her, to feel the heat of her skin and that's the moment it happens. Heart pounding, mouth going dry, Mary feels the penny drop — a jolt of sudden, brutal clarity cracking through her whole body like a thunderclap.

"It's pretty goddamn bad," Mary says absently, shifting Lilith in her lap, pulling her tighter, thinking dazedly now just what in the hell am I supposed to do about this?
