100 Year Old Film
Dogs of War July 1, 1923
Dogs of War: A Classic Our Gang Comedy
If you are a fan of silent comedy, you might have heard of the Our Gang series, also known as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals. This series of short films, produced by Hal Roach Studios and distributed by Pathé Exchange and later Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, featured a group of poor neighborhood children and their adventures. The series was notable for showing children behaving in a natural way, and for portraying white and black children interacting as equals during the era of racial segregation.

One of the most hilarious and memorable entries in the Our Gang series is Dogs of War, released on July 1, 1923². Directed by Robert F. McGowan, who also co-wrote the story with Hal Roach, this two-reel short follows the gang as they wage a mock trench battle using old vegetables as ammunition. The battle is interrupted when Mary, one of the gang members, is called to act in a film at the nearby West Coast Studios. The rest of the gang decides to sneak into the studio and get a role in the film, but they end up causing chaos and mayhem on the set. Along the way, they encounter Harold Lloyd, one of the most popular silent film comedians of the time, who plays himself and helps them escape from the angry studio staff.
Dogs of War is a delight for comedy fans, as it showcases the talents and personalities of the young actors who made up the gang. Among them are Joe Cobb, Jackie Condon, Mickey Daniels, Jack Davis, Allen "Farina" Hoskins, Mary Kornman, and Ernest "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison. The film also has some historical significance, as it was filmed alongside Lloyd's feature film Why Worry?, using the same South American town set built for that film. Lloyd and his leading lady Jobyna Ralston make cameo appearances in Dogs of War as themselves, giving us a glimpse of their behind-the-scenes work.

Dogs of War is a classic example of the Our Gang series, which ran from 1922 to 1944, spanning the silent and sound eras of cinema. The series featured more than 40 child actors as regular members of the cast over its 22-year run. Some of them went on to have successful careers in Hollywood, such as Jackie Cooper and Robert Blake. Others faded into obscurity or met tragic ends, such as Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer and Darla Hood. The series has been re-released and syndicated under various titles over the years, such as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Comedy Classics. The series has also inspired several remakes and adaptations, such as the 1994 feature film The Little Rascals and the 2014 direct-to-video film The Little Rascals Save the Day.
If you want to enjoy some wholesome and hilarious comedy from the golden age of cinema, you should definitely check out Dogs of War and other Our Gang films. You will not regret it!
