I have a brand new album that is now on sale. It’s called Dancing With Hobbits. It’s album of all original, hobbit - inspired dance tunes. If you saw the Lord of the Rings movies and heard the music during Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party, then that should give you some idea. It’s fun, upbeat Celtic dance tunes.
It was recorded with Sam Gillogly on fiddle. Sam is no stranger to this podcast, having their own album of Classical Celtic music. But if you’re heard a fiddle on any of my songs in the last 15 years, that was probably Sam.
The album is listed under our band name Dancing With Hobbits. I’ll share music in the coming weeks and later in the show.

- Running on the beach near Tarifa, Spain and later in Biarritz, France (picture attached with the beach way in the background)
- Climbing the Rock of Gibraltar (see picture of monkey)
- Hiking a piece of the Camino De Santiago pilgrimage trail, near Bilbao (the picture near the ocean).
- Also managed to see Iron Maiden live, a long held bucket list dream of mine to see a concert overseas. We didn't listen to the Podcast on that occasion ha ha but listened quite a bit while driving around 2400 - 2500 km from Portugal through Spain to the Basque tip of France and then Spain.
We were lucky enough in this life to visit Ireland, summer of 2021. So so so so nice, we LOVED it. BUT due to COVID...no live music!
Someday, we'll manage to get on an Invasion… Slainte,"

This question is, is it ever justified to torture an individual to save the lives of many? And if the answer is yes, how far can you go? This issue is indeed a very sensitive subject and I think it takes guts for any filmmaker to put it out there in the open like Gregor Jordan did. Add to that the clever fact that he doesn’t actually make a choice, but rather lets the audience decide on whatever they want to think and feel, and you have a pretty gutsy and controversial concept. In a nutshell, this film is about a man of American descent who has become a Muslim and has now, as an act of terrorism, planted 3 nuclear bombs in 3 major American cities which will go off in four days. Screenwriter Peter Woodward made some very tactical decisions considering the characters in the story. They are all somewhat stereotypical, but this is no bother because they’re all there for a reason. Carrie-Anne Moss, as an FBI investigator, represents the conscience, the sensitivity and the struggle to make the right decision. Samuel L. Jackson is her polar opposite; the brutal, rational, stone cold “interrogator” who does what he does because he’s the only one who can and willing to do it. The means he is willing to go to in order to get his subject to talk ...

Episode Review: ‘Wizard City’ (Distant Lands, Ep. 4)
Airdate: September 2, 2021
Story by: Adam Muto, Jack Pendarvis, Kate Tsang, Hanna K. Nyström, & Charley Feldman
Storyboarded by: Maya Petersen, Hanna K. Nyström, Anna Syvertsson, & Aleks Sennwald, & Haewon Lee
Directed by: Miki Brewster & Jeff Liu (supervising), Sandra Lee (art)
An episode focusing on Peppermint Butler’s dark side is something that the fandom has craved ever since the little guy demanded Finn and Jake’s flesh in season two’s “Death in Bloom.” While installments like season five’s “The Suitor” and season six’s “Nemesis” did much to scratch that itch, the story of the Dark One remained mostly unknown…
And after “Wizard City,” it still remains largely unknown. But that’s OK, because instead of focusing on the character’s history, this special focuses on Peps’ quest to relearn magic at a magic school. Put most simply, this special is largely a fun excuse for the show to riff on Harry Potter and The Owl House-style “magic school hijinks,” and it mostly all works.
The special follows Peps quest to go to WizArts (a definite play on CalArts, the school that Pen Ward and Adam Muto, among many others, went to) so that he can relearn magic and once again become one of the greatest dark wizards of his time. Initially, Peps tries to make friends with cool kid Spader and his posse, but once they learn that Peps is not as talented at magic as they had initially thought, they kick him to the curb. It is at this point that Cadebra, Abracadaniel’s adorkable niece who is fascinated with stage magic, enters the picture. Cadebra tries everything in her power to befriend Peps, but Peps pushes back, since she’s not “cool.” It does not matter, though, because both Peps and Cadebra are sorted into the same “house”—the “Skink House—and are forced to work together.
While Peps and his cohort begin learning more and more complex magic, a secret cult of school professors, led by the otherwise caring Dr. Caledonius, are scheming to resurrect Coconteppi, a powerful dark wizard whose putrid heart has been discovered underneath the school excreting a very powerful ichor. The school cult kidnaps Spader and gives him some of the ichor to drink; they hope that because of his talent, he will be able to house the spirit of Coconteppi. This does not go as planned, and Spader is graphically killed (albeit off screen). (In a more humorous moment, Bufo, the scam wizard from season one’s “Wizard,” also ingests some of the ichor, believing himself powerful enough to handle it, but it kills him.)
Eventually Peps and Cadebra learn what is going on. Dr. Caledonius welcomes Peps, believing that he is strong enough to handle the ichor. When Cadebra’s life is put in danger, Peps reluctantly gives the putrid fluid a swig, which infuses him with the power of Coconteppi. Coconteppi-Peps then kills all the cult members before Cadebra manages to remove the ichor from Peps body. For uncovering a heinous plot, Peps is promoted to the highest house, “Salamander,” but he decides to remain a Skink and learn magic “the hard way” with Cadebra as his friend.
As I mentioned near the start of this review, “Wizard City” spends most of its time riffing on the “magic boarding school” trope, with much of the episode feeling like a light-hearted parody of Harry Potter: The characters, after all, are “sorted” into “houses,” they learn various types of magic from skilled “professors,” and they bunk in different parts of a large castle-like campus. Of course, Harry Potter didn’t invent the idea of a boarding school, but when setting your story in a school for magic, it is very hard not to lean at least somewhat into the Hogwarts relation. And this really is a double-edged sword, for while Harry Potter references can be fun here and there, they can also make the overall story feel like a fanfic parody. This special does a good job focusing more so on the characters rather than the setting, but I won’t lie, at times it did feel as if they show was really trying to make you realize it was making a Harry Potter joke.
Of all the characters introduced in the special, the breakout star is easily Cadebra, voiced by Chloe Coleman. Radiating a sort of Mabel Pines energy, Cadebra is the beam of optimism who shines brightly in an otherwise macabre special. There is something about her plucky personality and sense of wacky individualism that charms the viewer. I appreciate how the show compared and contrasted her with her uncle, the one and only Abracadaniel: like her uncle, Cadebra is a good person who wants to help others, but unlike Abracadaniel, she has a sense of courage and fortitude that results in her taking on a Coconteppi-possessed Peps at the episode’s climax. (Say what you will, Abracadaniel stans, but our favorite custodian would never have done that!) Thanks to her bravery and dedication to Peps, Cadebra is easily the heart of the special.
The episode throws an interesting little curveball into the mix by having the ‘ghost’ of Past Peppermint Butler constantly haunt Peps in the here-and-now. Past Peppermint, it seems, was so determined to become a great wizard, he cursed himself, so that if anything were to go awry, his Past self could materialize and set him straight. It’s confusing, but I do think that mixing the “overbearing parent” trope with a curse is a clever idea; it gives the whole special some dramatic heft. The whole setup is made even funnier by the special’s conclusion: After Future Peppermint Butler is ‘defeated’ and the day is saved, Peps reveals to Cadebra that he still wants to be a great and powerful dark wizard… but he wants to earn that power through hard work and determination. (Peppermint Butler might commune with demons, but he would never sell his soul to one for power; Glob helps those who help themselves, ya know?)
One of the special’s strongest points is its background art. Adventure Time always had some beautiful set pieces, and this special goes above and beyond to give WizArts an ancient sense of grandeur and mystery. Ghostshrimp, a freelance artist who was the show’s lead background designer during seasons 1-4, return for this special as a “visual developer”—basically, he mocked up a bunch of rough designs for the locales, and then the episode’s background artists worked up the final pieces in his style. On his podcast, Ghostshrimp mentioned how hectic he found Adventure Time to be, because he was used to taking his time on pieces. As such, the decision to bring him on for just development was smart, as it allowed him to still come up with iconic background designs while also playing fast and loose with everything. Hopefully the show will continue this approach with the Fionna and Cake miniseries that is coming up. After all, Ghosthsrimp’s style is the look of Adventure Time.
Another strong point for the episode is its voice acting. For one thing, you have your regulars like Tom Kenny and Dana Snyder, and Duncan Trussell, who all give a solid performance. But to voice many of the special’s new characters, the show brought on a bevy of fun actors: Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader, for instance, is now voicing Bufo, and he does a solid job hamming up his role as the old fogey. And then there’s Toks Olagundoye, whose British accent gives Dr. Caledonius a sense of knowledge and expertise. To my delight and surprise, SungWon Cho, an internet personality and voice actor perhaps better known as ProZD, was tapped to voice Brain Wizard, and he does an excellent job. And finally, Anthony Stewart Head, a very talented actor who I know best as Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, voices Con Wizard, and is even given a fun little ditty to sing. I can safely say that the voice acting in this special is likely the best of the bunch, and it’s obvious that the actors were all having a great time playing their parts.
What drags the whole thing down, in my opinion is the excessive murder. (I joked on Twitter that during the climax of “Wizard City,” it felt like I was watching an Adventure Time-ified version of Invincible!) Infused with the power of Coconteppi, Peps goes on a brutal killing spree, boiling Potable Wizard into steam, zapping Dimension Wizard into another plane of existence, smashing Berdzerd, and—perhaps most graphically—excerebrates (had to look that word up!) Brain Wiz. On Twitter, @sometipsygnostalgic argued that while, yes, the scene is startling, it does wonders to transmute “a poor Summer Camp Island knockoff [into] Adventure Time chaos.” The more I think about it, the more I think that’s a fair point; after all, this is hardly the first dark thing that has happened in Adventure Time. But the part that I cannot really stomach is the fact that Spader was murdered for no real reason, and the special ends without anyone really expressing their horror at the situation. Sure, Spader was a schoolyard bully, but he was also a child. And killing a child—either for the drama or the lulz—feels decidedly out of place in an Adventure Time episode. It’s hard to express, but it just felt unnecessarily nihilistic and mean-spirited.
All things considered, I think this was a fun episode, but it was somewhat underwhelming for a ‘finale.’ Much of this is because it had to air after the perfection that was the back-to-back “Obsidian”/”Together Again” wombo combo. But I can’t help but feel like this special just felt a little... off. A little too meanspirited, and it leaned a bit too much on standard tropes. Still, it was a fun spin, and I know that I’ll rewatch it.
Mushroom War Evidence: As Peps rides the bus to school, he passes a bunch of abandoned houses, some of which are buried in the ground. There is an unexploded bomb above the fossilized elephant in the school. Cadebra has a dream that takes place in the ruins of a city.
Final Grade: B+

Whilst Nordic Classicism has predominantly been treated as an anomaly of 20th century architecture and thus the triumph of modernism its undeniable qualities have been (re)discovered in the last two decades. John Stewart in his book „Nordic Classicism: Scandinavian Architecture 1910-1930“, published in the present edition by Bloomsbury in 2020, takes an intimate look at Nordic Classicism through contextualization, architects’ biographies and extensive building analyses to which he also added newly drawn plan material. The author, architect himself, presents Nordic Classicism as what it is, namely a unique period that is neither a sequel to the National Romanticism nor a prequel to the Functionalism of later decades. He demonstrates the well-tempered impact of the buildings on the visitor, the spatial routes and the architectural details through e.g Asplund’s Stockholm City Library or Carl Petersen’s Faaborg Museum, a very convincing and accessible fashion that thanks to the plan material provided is easy to follow. Although the illustrations included are of only moderate quality the book is a highly recommended read that for the first time provides a comprehensive English-language account of this undoubtedly important period in Scandinavian architecture as it unites the numerous and disparate strands of research in a convincing narrative

Donna Reed wrote "I have wonderful memories of 'It's a Wonderful Life'!" on a promotional photograph of the film before she signed it for a fan, and James Stewart wrote under her note, "And I have wonderful memories of Donna Reed and 'It's a Wonderful Life'."
Two years after making "It's A Wonderful Life", Donna Reed was cast as "Ethel Stratton" for "The Stratton Story". In 1984, she recalled, "Van Johnson was cast as Stratton, but something happened and they cast Jimmy. I liked Van but I was thrilled when they announced Jimmy was going to do it. I thought we were pretty good together in 'It’s a Wonderful Life'. But Jim asked that they take me off the picture too, and they replaced me with June Allyson [Allyson and Stewart were once an item]. When I asked why, I was told that Jimmy was fighting for his professional life. I said, 'What do you think I’m fighting for?' And I was. I didn’t work for MGM again. The pictures I made got worse, except for 'From Here to Eternity' [for which she won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress], and my career never did recover. So I’m mad at Jimmy for wrecking my career... I was at Metro for eight years. When they were stumped with me, they did one of three things: They put me in a 'B', they loaned me out, or they let me sit."
Stewart admitted to biographer Michael Munn that it was his choice to replace Reed, saying: "I had to have a hit, and as much as I liked Donna Reed... And as good an actress as she is... Which she proved in 'From Here to Eternity'... The sad fact is that on 'It's a Wonderful Life' we just didn’t have any chemistry... On screen or off. We just didn’t hit it off. And I think the film suffered... It was one of the weaknesses in the film. Capra thought so too. He once said to me, 'Jim, if only we could have had someone like Margaret Sullavan or Ginger Rogers, but your wife in the picture has to be so ordinary, and you can’t cast Margaret or Ginger to play ordinary women.' I felt just so bad about Donna not being in the [Stratton] film... But I needed someone who was going to play a woman who was going to be a hundred and ten per cent supportive of her husband... And I wasn’t convinced Donna could pull that off, because we just didn’t hit it off. Things like that show up on the screen. And I feel guilty."
According to Paul Petersen, who played Reed's son on "The Donna Reed Show", James Stewart was thrown by the casting of Donna Reed. Referring to her, Stewart told him, "She turned out to be the embodiment of goodness, and got me so disconcerted that I kept putting off that kiss scene, you know, when we’re in that tight two-shot on the telephone? We put off doing that scene for weeks. I was so nervous. There was real electricity in the air. I asked Donna if she wanted to rehearse and she said, ‘Why don’t we just do it?’ and Capra, knowing what was going on, agreed. So there we were, cheek to cheek, no rehearsals, hormones out of control, and Capra says, ‘Action!’ Well, we did it in one take. One of the best things I’ve ever done."
Actor Robert Osborne, who was sitting next to Reed at the AFI's tribute to Frank Capra in 1982, revealed that when both Capra and Stewart praised her about how great she was in "It's A Wonderful Life" during their speeches, Reed eventually turned to him and said: "Isn't this interesting? At the time I was blamed for the failure of the film and now they're saying how wonderful I was in it."
After Reed's death in 1986, James Stewart was one of the few celebrities to attend to her funeral. While giving an eulogy, he said: "I’ll always remember her as a wonderful woman and as my wife in 'It’s a Wonderful Life'. I don’t know of anybody who could have played the role better. She was absolutely marvellous."

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU SCREWED UP THE PLACE CARDS?
Uh-oh! Trouble is brewing on the horizon! The catering company in charge of the food has shuffled up all the name cards, leaving Descanso employees to hastily place everyone’s cards on the wrong tables. No one’s sitting where they’re supposed to, which means — will it be an hour and a half of pure awkwardness? Or will you be able to make some new friends?

out-of-character information
As a way to encourage more interactions with other individuals, we have come up with tables of random groupings of characters! For dinner-related threads, you may only interact with these individuals.
Please start at least four threads total with others sitting at your character’s table, preferably with a player that you have not interacted with, though we encourage more if you can. A reminder that they do not have to be long, and can be simple dialogue interactions if you wish.
As a disclaimer, we worked hard to have each player’s character sit at a different table, and group characters with other ones that have not interacted much yet, but we cannot guarantee that you will be paired with a player that you have not spoken to. Please take the initiative yourself to contact players that you have not spoken to, if you can!

The First Corvettes To Race At Le Mans – The Cunningham 1960 Chevrolet Corvette
In 1960 the Americans would arrive at the world’s most famous endurance race with a bang – three specially prepared 1960 Chevrolet Corvettes rolled off the trucks at the Circuit de la Sarthe to challenge for wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time.
The truth of the matter is that the Europeans were almost entirely dominant in both pre and post-WW2 top flight motor racing. The Brits, Italians, Germans, and French knew how to make the fastest cars in the world and the Americans often weren’t taken particularly seriously in races outside their own borders.
The 1960 Le Mans would go a long way towards changing this preconception.
Briggs, Zora, and $11,730.24 Worth of Corvettes
The team behind the development of the Corvette was led by Zora Arkus-Duntov, a fascinating man who had been born to Russian parents when they lived in Belgium, then raised largely in Berlin before fleeing to joint the French Air Force and fight the Nazis when WW2 broke out.
After the fall of France Zora and his family left Europe for the the United States, where they fell in love with the country, staying there for the rest of their lives. Zora had always loved fast vehicles, he started out with motorcycle racing before moving to cars, he proved both a highly capable engineer and a world class racing driver – achieving class victories in 1954 and 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans driving for Porsche.
In 1953 Zora had started working at GM and by 1955 he was the director of high performance at Chevrolet, he led the engineering of the Corvette, turning it from a 6-cylinder light sports car into a V8-powered racer that would take on the best in the world – and win.
After the 1955 Le Mans Disaster many manufacturers had left motor racing to the privateers, Chevrolet was one of them, much to Arkus-Duntov’s chagrin – he wanted to test the mettle of the Corvette against Europe’s best.
In the late 1950s Arkus-Duntov convinced Briggs Cunningham to take three Corvettes to Le Mans as a privateer – Cunningham was born into staggering wealth but he’d always shown much more interest in racing than money management, particularly yacht and automobile racing. By the late 1950s he’d already won the America’s Cup yacht race, the most prestigious in the world, and Arkus-Duntov talked him into entering three competition-prepared Corvettes at Le Mans.
Cunningham was no newcomer to Le Mans, he’s had developed and raced his own prototype sports cars at the event, taking a class win in 1953 with the Cunningham C5-R. His team had raced modified American road cars and prototypes extensively at Le Mans since 1950, becoming fan favourites in the process.
Entering the 1960 Le Mans
The Cunningham team bought three 1960 Corvettes from Don Allen Chevrolet, each was optioned to the gills with every performance tweak available including a 290 hp fuel-injected V8, quick-ratio steering, heavy-duty sintered-metallic brake linings, heavy-duty suspension, a close-ratio four-speed transmission, a Positraction limited-slip differential, a radio delete, and a temperature-controlled radiator fan.
Before shipping the cars to Europe they fitted a series of their own upgrades including Stewart Warner gauges, a Halibrand quick release fuel cap, Halibrand knock off wheels with Firestone racing tires, Koni competition shock absorbers, Bendix fuel pumps (a primary and a back-up), an additional front additional sway bar, a 37 gallon fuel tank, brake ducting from the grille area and a cooling duct from drivers side front bumper area (directing cooling air to the driver through the foot well), two seats from a Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft, and Sebring exhausts that exit in front of the rear tires.
The Corvettes would face stiff competition in Europe, they’d be racing against the Ferrari 250 TR59, the Aston Martin DBR1, the Porsche 718, the Ferrari 250 GT SWB, the Porsche 356B Carrera, the Triumph TRS, the Maserati Tipo 61, the Jaguar E2A, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SV Spyder, and a number of others.
The race took place over the 25th and 26th of June, Ferrari needed an outright win at Le Mans to take the FIA World Sports Car Championship title, so they brought 8 of their best cars. The race was always going to be a challenge but during the third hour a storm swept across the track bringing torrential rain which caused a number of accidents, shaking up the running order.
The rain continued intermittently throughout the night but began to clear by the morning, sadly two of the three Corvettes had been falling by the wayside, one of the cars had been rolled and was out of the race and another got stuck in the sand by the truck – losing valuable time before being recovered and getting back into the race (this was the car shown here).
By the time the chequered flag fell one of the Corvettes was still running – it took a class win at Le Mans and finished 8th overall. This was a great result for the first Corvette outing at the famous event, and although they didn’t know it at the time it was just the first of many, Corvettes have been racing at Le Mans for decades since.

The 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Shown Here
The car you see here is one of the three original 1960 Le Mans Corvettes, it’s been restored back to its original 1960 livery and specifications, and it won the Preservation Award at the 2016 San Marino Motoring Classic, as well as the Corvette class at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The car is now in the care of Bruce Meyer, a well known classic car enthusiast who specialises in historically significant automobiles. If you’d like to see it in person the good news is that you can – the car is one of the main exhibits at the Petersen Automotive Museum’s new exhibit dedicated to the cars owned by Meyer.
