When I tell people Ditko is my favorite artist, they think it's because of #Spiderman #doctorstrange #creeper or his other unique creations. But I'm fascinated with his ability to draw what I called, "ruggedly handsome-without the handsone". He drew ordinary better than most. I especially liked his rendition of older people. #JackedKirby - What If... The Marvel Bullpen had been transformed into the Fantastic Four! What If... was a great anthology title from Marvel where creative teams would take stabs at alternate storylines for characters in crazy fashions. Marvel didn't want to change continuity for their popular characters, so this was a great avenue for creative people to tell alternative stories. Imagine if Ben Parker had lived, Wolverine had not been Weapon X or Daredevil had not been blind... slight variations to the original stories that could really throw the whole character path for a loop! In October of 1978 we see #Issue11 of the series, which is an even wackier than usual, sees real life employees of Marvel becoming the Fantastic Four instead of the usual characters. After a mysterious package to the Marvel office explodes and leaks radiation everywhere, Editor Stan Lee becomes Mister Fantastic, Sol Brodsky became The Human Torch, secretary Flo Steinberg becomes the Invisible Woman and Jack Kirby becomes the EVER loving blue eyed THING! The story, written and drawn by Jack Kirby, was the original idea of editor Roy Thomas... and was also the first time in 8 years that Jack had drawn the FF! The story features Namor, Skrulls and all other types of Kirby Marvel goodness... including lots and lots of tech! Check out this insane splash featuring the Bullpen team in their FF glory! Happy 90th birthday Steve Ditko!!! One of the last surviving giants of American comics Ditko is a comics artist and writer best known as the artist and co-creator, with Stan Lee, of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Ditko studied under Batman artist Jerry Robinson at the Cartoonist and Illustrators School in New York City. He began his professional career in 1953, working in the studio of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, beginning as an inker and coming under the influence of artist Mort Meskin. During this time, he then began his long association with Charlton Comics, where he did work in the genres of science fiction, horror, and mystery. He also co-created the superhero Captain Atom in 1960. During the 1950s, Ditko also drew for Atlas Comics, a forerunner of Marvel Comics. He went on to contribute much significant work to Marvel. In 1966, after being the exclusive artist on The Amazing Spider-Man and the “Doctor Strange” feature in Strange Tales, Ditko left Marvel for reasons never specified. Ditko continued to work for Charlton and also DC Comics, making major contributions, including a revamp of the long-running character the Blue Beetle, and creating or co-creating the Question, the Creeper, Shade, the Changing Man, and Hawk and Dove. Ditko also began contributing to small independent publishers, where he created Mr. A, a hero reflecting the influence of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism. Since the 1960s, Ditko has declined most interviews, stating that it is his work he offers readers, not his personality.
