•┈••✦ ❤ ✦••┈•
I. Kisses/ PDA
> he doesn’t like PDA…or at least that’s what he claims
> Frenchie and Marv give him shit- and Hughie is so supportive it makes him angrier than the others giving him shit
> but tbh they’re all happy to see him happy, and he knows that somewhere under that thick skull off his
> so when you give him a kiss or hold his hand or hug him in the base he grumbles, but he never pushes you away or actually complains
> and sometimes he’ll haphazardly pull you against him without saying a word, cheeks a bit pink as he mumbles something into your hair
> usually a ‘good job’ if it fits the occasion, otherwise a comment about how his coworkers are idiots
> now undercover, it’s a different story
> everyone is a potential threat then- and even worse, everyone is potentially going to bother you
> if he even gets a whiff of someone looking you over he’s got an arm around your waist and a hand not so subtly on his holster
> if you want to get any actual surveillance done you have to shoo him away so he doesn’t scare anyone off
> and even then he’s checking in way more often than he needs to
> it’s hard to get mad at, because it’s sweet in his stubborn, assholeish way
> and if you don’t care about surveillance it’s easy to get him riled by playing into it
> and then he’ll kiss you hard right in front of whatever chucklefuck was eying you
> “hope he’s enjoying the bleedin’ view”
> he’s a big cuddler when you’re alone- another thing he’d never admit
> but he loves when you snuggle up with your head on his chest, listening to his heart and nearly dozing while he goes through files
> or when you’re exhausted on the van ride home and make sure no one is paying attention as you hold with his hand in the front seat, rubbing his probably bloodied knuckles and pressing soft kisses them
> he likes your little late night rendezvous the best, though
> you’re both bad at sleeping, so most nights in the base he’ll find you in the kitchen near midnight brewing chai
> you’ll be sitting on the counter in one of his shirts and smile brightly despite the bags under your eyes
> and then when he comes over and puts a hand on either side of you, you trap him in your legs
> the kisses are sometimes heated, sometimes chaste
> but either way you enjoy the tea, and spend the rest of the restless night together
II. Sharing a bed
> when you’re all living in hiding, space is tight under the pawnshop
> you’ve both got shitty little twin beds, and he’s always complaining about space
> but the nights are getting cold and the heater barely works, so you hatch your evil scheme
> evil scheme might get giving it too much credit. like way too much
> all you plan on is asking to snuggle and never leaving his bed
> but he’s taking forever to get whatever he’s doing done, and you’re tired
> no biggie, you’ll just crawl in and wait for him so you can ask
> the next thing you know it’s two a.m. and he’s nudging you
> “oi. who said you could be in here?”
> you whine and give him the biggest pout, eyes all hazy from sleep
> and not wearing all that much either
> he sighs but you can hear the smile in his voice “c’mon then love.”
> before you can scooch over he’s pulling you on top of him completely, making you feel tiny on his broad chest
> he tried not to seem too delighted when you’re there again the next night
III. Let’s get kinky
> listen. i swear i don’t think every character has a daddy kink. just all the ones i’m super attached to
> but he canonically referred to himself as daddy and that’s not leaving my brain anytime soon. so.
> he refers to you as so many sweet nicknames- and he likes to pair them with a healthy mix of degradation and praise
> “you’re a filthy fuckin’ whore aren’t yah sweetheart?”
> his default is rough. he’s a frustrated man, and he’s been pent up for a while now
> but you can take it. probably.
> he likes choking. and spanking, he loves when you’re a brat and he can bend you over his knee
> mostly because then he can finger fuck you right then and there when he’s done and make you a complete mess
> if you wear makeup he thinks it’s twice as nice with your lipstick smudged and mascara running down your cheeks
> and you look prettiest to him on your knees, already a bit teary and sucking on his fingers until you’ve earned the real thing
> he wants to breed you so bad it makes him look stupid. (tbh not literally, even if it is possible, but god the dirty talk is so good that it doesn’t matter)
> his favorite position is reverse cowgirl- he loves seeing you whine and slowly ease yourself onto him
> and to me- he’s an ass man lmao, he loves watching it as you bounce on his cock

Coffee & Secrets (6)
Series Masterlist
Pairing: Rookie Cop! Leon x Barista! Fem! Reader
Summary: As a cozy coffee shop owner in Raccoon City, you’re no stranger to visitors seeking comfort, quiet, and warmth. When a rookie officer named Leon finds a kindred spirit in you, it sets in motion a chain of events that forever changes the course of your lives. An alternate universe set in Resident Evil 2 Remake and inspired by the game Coffee Talk.
Content & Warnings: Canon divergence, coffee shops, romance, slow burn, strangers to lovers, idiots in love, fluff, slice of life, swearing
Author's Note: We’re nearing the end of this series! Thank you to everyone on here for your support, especially in the comments and reblogs. This will probably be my last Leon fic for a while. Sometimes it felt like I was writing into the void and it was a little disheartening, but I started to realise that I need a change of scenery and explore writing through other fandoms.

Chapter 6: Full Circle
“Am I looking at the new Chief of Police?”
You cracked a grin as Marvin graced your shop clad in his shiny new outfit and badge that made him look almost regal. Gold stripes and stars lined the cuffs and epaulets of his navy blue jacket. He removed his elegantly embroidered peaked cap, tucking it under his arm as he rubbed his buzz cut. And there he was again, the same old Marvin that you knew.
“You sure are.” He winked, reflecting your grin before a minor shadow loomed over his face. “Can’t say the circumstances I got promoted in were the most pleasant though.”
Laying your hand on his shoulder, you gave it a firm, supportive squeeze. “Everyone knows you deserve this, Marv. You’ll do great.”
“Aww, look what you’ve done! Making me cry all over my nice suit like that,” he emitted a low chuckle, his voice cracking up as he patted your hand. Wiping away a stray tear from his waterline, he cleared his throat and pulled up a chair at the counter.
“So, what can I get for the man of the hour?”
“You know me, I’m a creature of habit,” he affirmed.
You caught the drift, your hands already busying themselves as if they had a mind of their own. “Something gingery.”
The kettle whistled as steam rushed through its spout. Taking it off the stove, you poured it over a mixture of the fresh ginger and turmeric root you had diced up. You allowed it to steep for a while before adding in the jasmine tea leaves. Finally, you strained it into a tea cup garnished with the flower petals.
“Your celebratory drink—Golden Dawn.”
“I can already tell I’m gonna love it.” Marvin lifted the cup to his lips, blowing on it lightly before drinking it sip by sip.
“Nice music too,” he added, bobbing his head along to one of the tunes on the stereo. “This what you kids listen to these days?”
Over the next hour, you engaged in lighthearted chatter until it came to the never ending squabble of who would pay—or not. As always, you won, telling the older man to accept the gift and enjoy some quality time with his wife and daughters.
As Marvin prepared to leave, Ben and Claire coincidentally came through the door. All three of them stopped dead in their tracks, tensing up as they eyed each other awkwardly.
It was Ben who broke the silence, extending his hand as he said, “Congratulations, Branagh. I mean it.”
And he truly did. There was not a note of insincerity in the man’s tone.
At this, Marvin smiled, giving Ben a cordial handshake. “Thanks, Bertolucci. Guess I’ll be seeing you around, though hopefully not on my case,” he joked.
That elicited a roar of laughter from Ben. “I go where the story leads me, Chief.”
“You really are the devil in disguise,” Marvin noted wryly. “Well, I’mma head off, so have a good evening.”
“Bertolucci. Redfield,” he acknowledged, tipping his cap to the two before giving you a final wave as he exited the shop.
“Drinks on me,” Ben declared, smacking the counter table with his palm.
You raised an eyebrow. “Wouldn’t a bar have been a better choice?”
“Yeah, we’re headed there after,” he confirmed. “Just had to patronize the place that fueled all my sleepless nights first.”
“I read the article by the way,” you mentioned in passing as you got to work. “It was very well-written and fair.”
“Facts, you can’t go wrong with facts,” he clarified. “I don’t sensationalize.”
“You could’ve been scathing, but you didn’t. That’s an active choice,” you pointed out.
The article had identified several instances of corruption and gross misconduct that the previous chief had been involved in, but in a relatively neutral tone. It also ended on a more positive and optimistic note, creating hope for the future of the RPD.
“Heh, well,” he shrugged, pressing against the bridge of his spectacles as he gave you a coy smile. “Maybe I am getting soft.”
Turning to Claire, he noted, “You’re quiet today, Red. You should be celebrating, kid.”
“Mmm,” she responded with mild disinterest, though you could see her glancing at the shop’s entrance every now and then.
“I didn’t have shot glasses, so I used your favorite—espresso cups,” you teased, placing the two orders on the table. “These should make good pre-drinks.”
“What’s in it?” Ben asked skeptically, unused to anything other than his trusty coffee.
“Let’s just say a combination of lemon, olive oil and cinnamon. I added some other flavorings to make it more palatable,” you explained. “Prevents hangovers.”
Swirling the liquid, he pinched his lips together and remarked, “Guess it wouldn’t hurt. Bet it’s got one of those hippy names too?”
“Grandma’s Cure.”
“Hah! That’s a good one!” he exclaimed, taking a swig from his demitasse.
There was a short pause before he gave his verdict, “Hmm! Not bad… not bad at all.”
However, Claire still left hers untouched and her mind appeared to be elsewhere.
“Hey, you okay?” you asked out of concern.
Claire shook herself out of her thoughts, stumbling over her words, “Y-yeah, shit, I’m sorry.”
Consuming the drink as quickly as possible, she thumped the cup back onto the counter, cleaning her mouth with the back of her hand. Fortuitously, your next customer who came through the door appeared to be the one she was looking for.
“Leon?”
The young officer froze, swallowing nervously as he stared at her. “Claire.”
You and Ben exchanged looks as you tilted your head in the direction of the exit, indicating to him to give them some space. He nodded discreetly in response, understanding what you were getting at.
Immediately, he stood up with a grunt and clapped Claire on the back. “Alright, Red, I’ll make a headstart first and you can join me at Jack’s Bar when you’re ready.”
With that, he placed some cash on the table, casually saluting you before making his way out.
Claire wasted no time getting to the crux of the matter. “That anonymous tip—it was you, wasn’t it?”
Slumping down on the seat beside her, Leon conceded, “Yeah, you got me.”
“I shouldn’t have pressured you into it, I’m sorry,” she blurted out.
“No, you wanted to do the right thing,” he sympathized. “I was so caught up in an ideal that never existed, I forgot about that.”
“It was decent of you to get Bertolucci to hold off on publishing the article until Irons stepped down,” he continued. “At least it was less of a blow to the department as a whole.”
“Still, the way I treated you was uncalled for,” she argued. “You’re a good friend, Leon, I…” her voice cracked.
“Sometimes, people say things because they’re hurt,” he mentioned, giving you a knowing look.
You smiled back, acknowledging the very same advice you had given him when you first met.
“Pals?” He stuck out his palm.
“What are you, twelve?” she scoffed. Breaking into a dazzling grin, she grasped his hand as though they were sealing a pact. “Pals.”
“Care for another?” you offered, presenting the drinks you had crafted up on the side.
Claire’s eyes twinkled. “Don’t mind if we do.”
Sherry arrived soon after, instantly taking to the redhead like an older sister. Eventually, Claire went off to join Ben, promising to return for a proper goodbye before leaving to finish her semester.
“How was school?” you asked, scooping yet another dollop of whipped cream into Sherry’s drink upon her instructions. She could be quite assertive when she wanted to be.
“Good…” she hummed. “Made a friend.”
“That’s awesome!” Leon commended.
“Oh, and no one dares to touch me, ’cause I told them you’ll kick their ass,” she added.
“Wait, what?” he guffawed, but she suddenly had the urge to use the bathroom and scurried off.
“Impossible,” he huffed as you snickered.
Leaning on your elbows over the counter, you addressed him, “Not that I don’t ask you this every day, but anything new with you?”
“Well, apart from the stuff with Claire and the RPD, it turned out that the background checks on the suspicious lady in red came up clean,” he reported.
“Wow, Kevin must be pissed.”
“You don’t say. Wesker kinda just lets her through too. The whole thing just screams trouble to me,” he admitted. “Guess you win some, you lose some.”
“Anyway, speaking of Kevin, he told me to pass you this.” Chucking a folded letter on the table, his icy blue eyes watched you like a hawk as an unreadable expression formed on his face.
“Huh, looks like everyone’s doing the rounds today,” you muttered, opening the paper to read its contents.
A telephone number was written down in bold black marker, followed by a “CALL ME ;)”
Your shoulders trembled as you burst out laughing, shaking your head in disbelief. That guy had some nerve for pulling off such a stunt, unless…
“You gonna?” Leon quizzed, and you swore you could sense a hint of jealousy in his voice.
“Whaddya think?” you smirked, closing the gap as your nose nudged against his.
His eyes fluttered, and he sucked in a sharp breath. You felt his lips barely graze yours until—
“So… are you, like, boyfriend and girlfriend?”
All at once, you were back at square one, Leon having hastily distanced himself away from you as Sherry stared at the two of you inquisitively.
“Yes—no. I mean, no?” Leon stuttered, his cheeks burning crimson as he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
You let out a frustrated sigh, deciding to leave them to their devices for the moment while you counted stock in the cabinets. At some point, Sherry wanted to go home and Leon took it upon himself to drive her back.
As you said your good nights, to your surprise, Leon wrapped his arms around your waist, dragging you in for a spontaneous embrace. “We’ll talk about this soon—about us,” he whispered into your hair.
Soon could not come soon enough.

Modern meet cute with a little help from Lambert's runaway pet.
The ten seconds Lambert spent staring dumbly at the now broken leash in his hand was all the time his black labrador needed to disappear from view. The man cursed before sprinting in the same direction, muttering curses in-between yelling his pets name alongside grumbled apologies to fellow pedestrians too slow to get out of his way - this was the absolute last time he bought cheap pet supplies online!
As luck would have it, Lambert didn't have to go very far before discovering his dumbass dog had made a friend; the man he'd apparently accosted giving pets with one hand whilst the other had a firm grip on the harness in an attempt to both keep the dog in one place and dissuade the attempted jumps at the cat sat on his shoulder.
"Morhen!" Lambert yelled before whistling twice and catching the attention of all three, the dog looking happy, the cat indifferent, the man indignant.
"Sorry, did - did you just call me a moron?" They spat
"Was calling my dog." Lambert clarified, "Says it right there on his collar."
The other man blinked at him, "Oh, I was wondering about the pronunciation. And that must make you-"
"Lambert. Yeah. Also on the collar." He shrugged, as Morhen trotted up to him, leaning against his leg as if he hadn't just made his owner sprint from one end of the park to the other, "I may have affectionately called him Moron a few too many times during the puppy stage and it ended up being the only thing he'd answer to but my brother insisted it was borderline animal cruelty to actually name him that and my dad was adamant he wasn't walking around in public yelling 'Moron!' So...Morhen. And for the record they were leashed but-" he held out the leash so they could see where the clip to attach it to the harness had broken clean off.
The man gave an inelegant snort in response, "Well seeing as we got your names, I'm Aiden and this-" he tilted his torso to give Lambert a better view of the tabby in a yellow harness and leash of its own, "Is Marv. You're welcome to pet him if you like."
Now it was Lambert's turn to snort, "Oh my god, that's such an old man name for a cat!" He moved closer, holding his hand out for inspection.
"Well he is an old man." Aiden cooed, giving Marv a tickle under the chin who butted his head against Aiden's in response before sniffing curiously at Lambert's fingers, "And I didn't name him, he's a rescue. It's a running joke we picked each other because we're a matching set."
Lambert gave them both a quick once over to try and find some clue as to what Aiden meant. It was then he realised the cat now rubbing its head against his palm was missing it's right eye and Aiden in contrast, appeared to have lost the sight in his left if the cloudiness was any indication. The remaining eye of both was also green, although Aiden's was of a darker shade.
Lambert felt like he should says something witty or slightly profound in response. Instead, what left his mouth was "Thought one of the things about cats was that you didn't have to walk them?"
Aiden shrugged, "We like the park. My new building allows pets, but I don't have a balcony or anything and he's partially deaf as well as half blind. Not great odds against city traffic, but he goes slightly stir crazy if he's cooped up inside for too long."
Lambert nodded in understanding as Marv's purrs grew in volume. As much of a pain in the ass Morhen could be, the thought of anything happening to him made Lambert want to pick him up and shelter him under his jacket like he had when they were still small enough to be held in one hand. The dog in question gave a sudden bark.
"Aaaaw, were we ignoring you, gorgeous boy?" Aiden clucked as he leaned down slightly to rub Morhen's head.
"I should get him back home before the entire harness decides to fall apart." Lambert said, hastily passing the leash through the harness loop and tying it in a knot, giving a couple of tugs to check it would hold, "Hopefully you won't experience any more crazy, runaway dogs."
"I don't know. I think I like how the last one turned out." Aiden replied with a smile, "Would it be ok if I call or text you sometime?"
Lambert blinked. He wasn't inexperienced by any means but usually he was the one asking cute guys for their number, not the other way around.
"Uh, sure. Let me just-"
"I already memorised your number off Morhen's tag earlier." Aiden admitted, "Nothing creepy, just incase I ended up having to call whoever to come get their dog."
"Text me and I'll save yours."
"Will do." Aiden gave a wave as Morhen used Lambert's distraction to start pulling him down the path, eager to get moving again, "See you around, Lambert."
When Lambert's phone alerted him later that evening, he was greeted by an unknown number sending him a pic of a tabby dozing in the shade of a tree and a link to a reputable website selling various pet harnesses.

Knowing Ron’s personality, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t liked much by the men who served under him. The veterans have told me he was certainly respected and feared, and a very strong leader. But he could be a real stickler for discipline and following orders, and I think his men probably didn’t like him much because of that. I’ve mulled over what I know about Ron’s personality and put it through the grid of what’s known about his wartime experiences. He was tremendously conscientious about doing the right thing. That character trait guided his life more than courage. Ron has been described in battle as fearless, but I have a feeling that, although his actions proved fearless in the end, Ron might have been simply too conscientious to not follow orders. Like the incident of running across Foy and back—I believe his attitude was, “Well, somebody had to do it.” Ron couldn’t ask anybody else to do it, so he did it himself.
I believe the other trait that drove his wartime experiences was his acceptance that he was going to be killed. He understood he wasn’t going to make it out alive, but he was going to go down fighting. He recognized that, for whatever reason, God was watching out for him, and there was no way he was going to make it through unless God was protecting him. I wouldn’t say he was a Bible-thumper, but I’m quite sure he considered himself to be a Christian.
~ Marv Bethea (Ron's stepson)

In honor of me having so much video game music downloaded on my phone that I ran out of storage and had to buy a new phone. My favorite track from each video game OST I have!
Bastion: Brusher Patrol (Such a bizarre clash of styles, I can't help but love this one. Shout-out to the part that sounds like Darren quietly scatting in the background.) (Also special shout-out to Build That Wall, probably my favorite vocal track in any Supergiant game)
Celeste: Scattered and Lost (I am such a normie for this choice but face it this track absolutely slaps.)
Chicory: A Colorful Tale: Song of the Wielders (I love how this song has actual lyrics but I still prefer to sing along with the Simlish version that Pizza and Chicory sing.)
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood: Illusion (First of all I love how every character in this game has their own theme I go feral for that kind of thing. Kurielle is probably one of the characters who stood out to me the least but by god is her theme gorgeous. I love the vocals and how a later track includes a sneaky reprise.)
Cuphead: Dramatic Fanatic (Tap dancing :D)
There are literally thirty of these so I'm doing a read more
Death's Door: The Grey Crow (A heartbreaking boss fight scored with the appropriate amount of anguish)
Deltarune: Cyber Battle (This melody is so underrated and ya know what, so are the characters associated with it. Sweet Cap'n Cakes forever.)
Elsinore: Donne, The Boat Boy (I love this song because it's associated with Lady Guildenstern, aka the best character in gaming full stop, but it's also just a fun little sea shanty that I think they made up for this game so I love that. Also has a lyrical version.)
Evergate: Police (Okay so the level with the police drones is one of the more frustrating ones in the game but the music is hauntingly beautiful so I give it a pass)
Going Under: trust fall (Marv is easily one of the most hateable video game antagonists of all time but damn if his boss theme doesn't slap)
Hades: Last Words (The rolling and the tolling of the bells bells bells bells bells)
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie: Reverie Ascendant (Lena Raine does these medley tracks so good man)
Hollow Knight: Dung Defender (By far the catchiest song about poop on my entire phone)
Ikenfell: Rose Thorns (So the insanely long final boss fight against Oxley overshadowed Aeldra's boss fight in my memory for a long time, but when I watched another playthrough and bought the OST I realized "Oh her theme bops SO much harder than his ever could")
Inscryption: A Final Duel (A hardcore remix of The Scrybe of Magicks, aka one of the only melodic tracks on the album and therefore the one every YouTube video about Inscryption uses in the background. I prefer the epic version just a bit more because honestly that Magnificus setpiece is the best moment in the game)
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass: Fun, Sunny Day (A fun and silly track as the title suggests, elevated even more by the context in which it plays in the game. The area music alternates between this and the more somber Rainy Sunday to illustrate that Jimmy mother is bipolar [very cute and silly game])
Omori: Bready Steady Go (Like the absolute dipshit I am I actually completely missed the optional Orange Oasis when I played this game myself. Every Let's Player finds it somehow, though, and when they fight the Unbread Twins I invariably stand up and dance along to the boss music.)
One Step from Eden: Perpetual Motion (It's just a good-ass track y'all)
Ori and the Blind Forest: Conundrum (In a soundtrack of sweeping orchestral pieces, this more subdued version of theme that only plays during one small puzzle section might seem a weird choice. But I've always really liked it)
Ori and the Will of the Wisps: Kwolok's Malaise (Kwolok's leitmotif is perfect for a giant frog and the boss remix takes it to it's logical conclusion)
Paradise Killer: Go! Go! Style (This track makes me feel like I'm having a sugar rush. The whole OST does actually but this one especially)
Pyre: Path to Glory (It's just got a really unique vibe to it. I like it)
Scarlet Hollow: Avery (Chill and really beautiful. Avery themself is kind of a sleeper character at this point but I can't wait for Brandon to remix their theme when they get assimilated into a giant plant monster)
Slay the Princess: The Princess (Okay full disclosure I've only played this game once so I don't have the full context for a lot of the tracks on this OST. Maybe hearing them alongside their respective princesses will make me like them more, but for now the title theme is too iconic to beat.)
Sounds of Sympathy (the OST for the game anthology Essays on Empathy): Zen and the Art of Transhumanism (In the Essays on Empathy documentary, fingerspit talked about how she prefers writing obscenely long tracks so the loop doesn't get annoying. Unfortunately for her my favorite track on this album is only three minutes long. It's a lovely little bop.)
Spiritfarer: Mind Palace (I played Spiritfarer before any of the character updates were released, so I didn't get Daria's mind palace sequences in my game. And I mean, they look very platforming-heavy so I'm okay with that, but god this is a gorgeous piece.)
Transistor: Impossible (I think this is Royce Bracket's boss theme? I don't know when any of the tracks on this OST specifically play in game. Regardless of all that this one gets me pumped.)
Unavowed: One Man's Power (I couldn't find a video of this one, but it's gentle saxophone solo that plays when Logan Brown is introduced. I think it fits is character really well and just sounds really nice)
Undertale: Death by Glamour (Best song for best character, enough said)
Wandersong: Moonscape (God knows this game gave me a lot of great options to pick from, but I settled on this one because it's so uplifting.)
#bastion#celeste#chicory: a colorful tale#the cosmic wheel sisterhood#cuphead#death's door#deltarune#elsinore#evergate#going under#hades game#harmony: the fall of reverie#hollow knight#ikenfell#inscryption#jimmy and the pulsating mass#omori#one step from eden#ori and the blind forest#paradise killer#pyre#scarlet hollow#slay the princess#essays on empathy#spiritfarer#transistor#unavowed#undertale#wandersong

so i'm reading certain nightwing volumes from '96 - 02 for my current reading run following NML (shout out to @havendance, cannot thank you enough 🫶🏾) and while some aspects of how he's written is very compelling and interesting to chew on, for the most part it's been pretty....boring?? like i'm gonna keep reading it so i can have as much context as possible, but it feels more like a chore 😩
anyways, i read your response on that “who’d you choose to write nightwing” poll and i’d love to get your opinion on what nightwing runs/writers to read outside of those 8 volumes. i really wanna get into dick grayson’s character and personality! also, if it’s cool with you, anyone else please feel free to add to this!
-dominomasc
Hey, dominomasc. Unknowingly you've just raised one of the fundamental incongruities of how comics work.
Comics are about layers of stories providing depth to a character and about dozens of different interpretations more than they are about a single amazing run. (Some characters have That Run! But on average, most don't). Dick Grayson, a character that has existed for 84 years, has some very fun stories from all sorts of writers. His title, Nightwing, is also an excellent example of how a lot of long running titles often don't really have a stand out section that's head and shoulders above the rest.
I promise, you are never going to run out of stories to read about Dick Grayson (Comicsvine has him at 9,593 appearances as I write this). So yes, this is going to be about two things: advice on finding stories about Dick that vibe for you; and advice on understanding Dick alongside other storylines.
Taking into account what's listed above and the fact I'm moderately obsessive, I have compiled a discussion of most of the major writers who have written Nightwing runs, or who have written major titles that Dick also prominently appears in.
I am at heart a 'Dick belongs to the Bat Office' person and my expertise in most characters starts with COIE. On that basis I'm not going to dip into pre-Crisis here.
Marv Wolfman & George Pérez: New Teen Titans (1980-1993ish). I am not going to explain all the title names here; you're going to have to go get more detail from someone who treats NTT period as their special interest. Wolfman and Pérez are the architects of Nightwing as a character, separate to Robin, that Dick grew into. Read this period if you're interested in Dick as a young adult among the other Titans going through the transition into adulthood and independence, and his relationship with Kory. Basically it's a superhero young adult soap opera. It can be quite uneven in places, particularly towards the back end, and there are approximately a thousand discussions over which storylines are good and which should be fired into the sun. I am not a subject expert for this period.
Because of the state of the Titans titles in the early 1990s, the Bat office demanded Dick Grayson back under their control. Exactly when they got him back is slightly debated, but it would be fair to say Batman #500 (October 1993) marks his transition back to being a Bat character (around the start of Knightquest); by KnightsEnd and Prodigal (July 1994-January 1995) Dick is once again firmly a member of the Batman set of characters, and has remained so to date.
Prodigal, by Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Doug Moench: (Batman #512 to Robin #13). Use a reading list here as the stories are spread across multiple titles. Prodigal is 12 issues about Dick's first time being Batman, with Tim as his Robin, and his feelings about returning home to Gotham as an adult. Robin #13 in particular is possibly the most important issue of the story, as it's the foundation of a reset in Bruce and Dick's relationship with each other and how it is going to be characterised for the next decade or so.
Chuck Dixon: (Nightwing #1-70 1996, Nightwing: Alfred's Return, and a bunch of other one shots) So Dixon is probably DC's most prolific writer of all time, and is the architect of what's been treated as 'default Nightwing'. In this run, Dixon creates Bludhaven and the situation of Dick being its protector, out of a desire to be his own man apart from Bruce. He sets up an extensive Rogue's Gallery for Dick, the most famous of which is making Blockbuster one of Dick's main enemies. He has Dick working at a cop bar and then decide to enter the Bludhaven Police Department in an attempt to investigate it from the inside due to the levels of corruption. This is also the run where Dick and Babs get together as adults. Basically, everything about 'default' Dick that you probably know comes from this run. Dixon's great for character interaction, for world building, and and particularly at making various titles tie together - because he was writing at least 1/3 of DC's entire line for a while there he's the king of crossovers, giving a lot of depth to friendships because characters just pop between titles he's writing. His actual plots however vary between middling to occasional flashes of greatness. I'd consider The Hunt for Oracle (#45-46 and BOP#20-21) and the Shrike story (#55-58) to be the standout storylines in his Nightwing run; for individual issues I'd also point to #6 and #25 for his relationship with Tim, #16 for Dick building his car, and then his crossover issues in events tend to be quality.
Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty: (Robin: Year One 2000, Batgirl: Year One 2003, Nightwing: Year One - Nightwing #101-106 1996) I am separating these three out from the rest of Dixon's work as they're quite important as retcons over Dick's backstory. Robin and Batgirl are well regarded rewrites of events; Nightwing is less so, partly because it's a solid example of the Jason personality retcon, and partly I think because a lot of people reading this were still well across the two 1980s versions of Dick's transition from Robin to Nightwing. I highly recommend Robin Year One, particularly with the Shrike storyline of Nightwing, as they are interlinked.
Devin Grayson: (Nightwing #71-100 & #107-117 1996, Nightwing/Huntress 1998, Gotham Knights #1-11 & #14-32, The Titans #1-20 1999) Oh, Devin. Devin Grayson is a Dick Grayson superfan (she uses Grayson as her surname because of Dick). She is really good at character introspection - Gotham Knights #1-11 contains some amazing character work. She's also not shy about establishing her own headcanons on characters and retconning their backstories. Devin's biggest contributions to the Dick Grayson lore are in establishing him as Romani and actually writing Bruce adopting Dick. Her run on Nightwing is best understood as a whump, break-the-cutie run, where Blockbuster sets out to destroy Dick's life, and in the process gets Dick fired, breaks up Dick and Babs, burns down Haly's Circus (for the first time), blows up his entire supporting cast, chases Dick out of Bludhaven and leads to Dick going under cover in the mob essentially to punish himself (also not the only time). Dick's also sexually assaulted in Nightwing #93 but I really beg people to read this in context of the rest of the run; this should be looked at as PART of the whole flow of whump, rather than as a separate situation. Grayson also had the title taken off her before she got to the 'comfort' part of the extended hurt/comfort storyline she was writing. It reads a lot better if you think of this in a more transformative fandom, ficcish manner of story rather than as a more standard run. If her Nightwing run is too grim for you, I highly recommend Gotham Knights and her Titans run; Devin Grayson is honestly best when she's writing a constellation of characters around Dick more than when she's writing Dick himself. She adores his friends and family. Standout issues to get a sense of Devin include: Nightwing #100, a self-reflective issue on Dick's history; Nightwing #81, where Dick's in hospital and Cass goes after Slade for him; Titans #15 1999, where the Fab 5 go on a camping trip together to get back to their roots and deal with a lot of tensions in the group; and Gotham Knights #8-11, Transference, where Dick and Tim team up to rescue Bruce, who's been brainwashed by Hugo Strange.
Jay Faerber: (The Titans #21-41 1999) Honestly Faerber's run on The Titans is not that Dick Grayson focused. It's entertaining if you want to read some solid Titans dynamics, but the standout characters you read this run for are Roy and Donna. Seriously, if you're into Roy, Cheshire and Lian drama I highly recommend Faerber's work; otherwise it's not an essential run for Dick.
Judd Winick: (Outsiders #1-25, 34-49 2003, Batman & Robin #23-25 2011) Winick tends to write an angrier and darker edged Dick Grayson, and he has a bunch of really common tropes you see pop out in his writing. These are no different, and thus include an awful lot of violence and characters having sex (so much sex). He can be quite funny as a writer, but honestly his Outsiders run does not have much of that humour. The Batman & Robin story is basically Winick finding some space to tie up his Jason Todd plot before Flashpoint obliterated it, more than an actual story about Dick. If you want a good encapsulating issue to get the vibe of Winick about Dick, take a look at Outsiders #21, which has a good chunk of Dick and Roy AND Dick and Bruce in it, though it's helpful to remember that this issue is set very shortly after War Games and so Dick is in a massive guilt spiral.
Bruce Jones: (Nightwing #118-124 1999) It's One Year Later! Bruce Jones moves Dick back to New York City (as Bludhaven went boom due to Chemo in the lead up to Infinite Crisis) and theoretically sets up Dick's status quo out to Reborn. So. The story Jones is most famous for is the first 4 issues of the run, which are generally referred to by fans as the TentaTodd story. Jason Todd turns up to run around annoying Dick by ALSO dressing up as Nightwing and committing crimes. He also turns into a tentacle monster for a bit. It is certainly a story that exists, but it actually is pretty in line with Jason and Dick's relationship up to Flashpoint: Jason turns up to be a brat who wants attention, does violent things, and Dick exhaustedly kicks the shit out of him and gets him locked up while despairingly going 'why is this my life'. Because of Jason running around killing people as Nightwing, the NYPD get mad at Nightwing and start trying to hunt him down. Jones is for the completionist.
Marv Wolfman: (Nightwing #125-137 1999) Lacking any better ideas, Wolfman gets a run on Nightwing. It's not Wolfman's finest work, to put it bluntly, and it's very obvious that Marv hasn't actually read any of Dixon or Grayson's runs. Marv does set Dick up working as a gymnastics and trapeze coach, which is always a decent job for him. If I had to pick one story from Wolfman, read Nightwing #127, where Dick gets buried alive and digs his way out of the grave.
Peter J. Tomasi: (Nightwing #140-157 1999, Batman & Robin #20-22 2011) Tomasi loves Dick Grayson, and particularly loves Dick's connection to his friends and family. Let me put it this way; in the lead up to Final Crisis and Blackest Night every title got an Origins and Omens short story on the back of an issue. Most books used it to write creepy or introspective reflections on awful stuff especially deaths that have happened to the characters. Tomasi used his to have Dick take Barbara skydiving for her birthday, and echo a bunch of themes from his first issue. I think this is one of the most mature and grown up looks at Dick prior to Flashpoint; Tomasi treats Dick as a grown adult with an adult relationship with Bruce. I love Freefall. Read Freefall to see some really interesting meta on Dick's relationship to the concept of falling and to the concept of catching falling people, a theme that's frequently present in his stories.
Grant Morrison: (Batman & Robin #1-16 2011) Astonishingly given how much of Reborn was designed by Morrison, they don't actually seem to care that much about Dick as a character more than as a prop to set Damian against. Dick's extremely focused on Damian in this title but also does not actually appear to like Damian very much. If I were going to recommend one story out of it I'd probably point to Batman & Robin #7-9, because Dick gets to be a giant hypocrite in them and tries to resurrect Bruce. It goes badly, for all involved.
Scott Snyder: (Detective Comics #871-881, Gates of Gotham, and like every Bat event during n52) The Black Mirror is probably my favourite piece of Dick!Batman storytelling set during Reborn. It's just elegant in terms of how hard Snyder pushes Dick and how his reactions are very much not those that Bruce would have. This is helpfully extremely obvious in that The Black Mirror and Gates of Gotham are actually part of a trilogy, the third act of which is Court of the Owls and due to Flashpoint Snyder had to rewrite CotO quite extensively including swapping Dick out of being Batman and having Bruce as the lead. Read The Black Mirror for Dick having a minor breakdown while solving a complex case with links to James Gordon and Babs. Read Gates of Gotham for incredible Dick & Tim & Cass & Damian fourway storytelling that shows the dynamics of every pairing out of the four.
Fabian Nicieza: (Nightwing #138-139 1999, Batman #703 & #713, parts of Battle for the Cowl, Nightwing #51-56 2016) The thing about FabNic is when he's on, he's very much on, and when he's not it can be painful. I actually almost would have skipped him on this list, but he very much deserves recognition for writing the Nightwing issues of Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, which alongside the Robin issues portray exactly how far Dick will go for Tim; and for Batman #703, which is the only issue prior to Bruce's resurrection that actually puts Dick, Tim and Damian on page together as heroes. He also got saddled with writing the start of the Ric Grayson saga under the script of Scott Lobdell, which, well, is definitely at the 'not well regarded' end of his oeuvre. FabNic is again a writer that is really good at character interaction, and I tend to find whenever I'm reading events where there's heaps of writers involved and he's there, the issues I really enjoy are the ones he's had a hand in.
Tony S. Daniel: (Battle for the Cowl, Batman #692-699 & #704-707 & #710-712) Oh, Tony Daniel. Why. Daniel's stories are probably the most classic-Batman of the Dick!Batman stories. His stories revolve a lot around drama at Arkham Asylum, with Harvey and Gilda Dent, and with the Falcones. On balance I think you could probably actually trade Dick out for Bruce in half these stories and it wouldn't make a huge amount of difference. If I were going to suggest one to try, maybe go with #710-712? It's Harvey focused and it has Kitrina Falcone and doesn't actually depend on the whole Jeremiah Arkham thing.
Kyle Higgins: (Nightwing #1-12, 0, & 15-29 2011) For a reboot of Dick Grayson down to his fundamentals, and working within the requirements of the 5 year time line, I like Higgins' work on Nightwing. Sure, I could have done without him burning down Haly's circus, again, and all the Court of the Owls revelations, but some of that was clearly dictated to him, and they way he gave Dick time as a teenager with relationships with other characters at Haly's before his parents died worked quite well. If I were going to cite a favourite part of this run it's probably the last section, #18-29 when Dick moves to Chicago and tries the 'strike out as my own hero with my own city, screw you dad' thing for the first time in the new timeline. Higgins put in quite a bit of cast building work and it's a shame none of it ever got used again between Forever Evil and then Rebirth just ignoring everything during this period.
Tom King and Tim Seeley: (Nightwing #30 2011, Grayson #1-20) I'm going to treat these two together here as I can't actually easily subdivide the run between them. This is the longest period Dick goes undercover working as a spy because his life has just gone to shit. He is both spying on Spyral (for Bruce) but also his job within Spyral is as a spy and special agent. Think James Bond, except Dick also gets to be the focus of the objectification camera. Some people enjoy it as a change of pace, some people can't stand it because it's just a very weird story for Dick and Dick's generally personally unhappy when he's stuck undercover, and it definitely is a highlight in the 'did you know Tom King worked for an intelligence agency? Tom King is working out his feelings about working for an intelligence agency again' oeuvre. If you want to try an issue, I recommend Grayson #5 as probably the best character and storytelling piece in the entire run.
Tim Seeley: (Nightwing #1-34) Good stuff I can say about Seeley's run includes that he used Rebirth as a impetus to rebuild Dick's status quo. He did quite a lot of world building for a new version of Bludhaven, he got Dick back into Nightwing and back into a blue V costume for the first time in 7 years, he's interested in looking at the Grayson family and not so much in terms of the Court of the Owls stuff. He likes Dick and Damian's time as Batman & Robin. Seeley's also a fan of a lot of character beats in terms of Dick's characterisation that were pioneered by Devin Grayson - particularly in terms of Dick being easily attracted to women, being impetuous and hot headed at times, and in the Romani retcon. I don't necessarily see eye to eye with Seeley on all of his characterisation and story choices, but he does a lot of repair work on getting Dick back to being Nightwing, including things like repeating beats from the Dixon and Grayson runs so that Dick has that backstory again, and what that means for his character. I might suggest Nightwing #8 2016, because it revolves around Bruce and Dick and the concept of falling (I'm a sucker for a good falling metaphor) or #9, which is literally a discussion of the changes between n52 and Rebirth with both of the Clark Kents, and in which Clark points Dick to return to Bludhaven (in a sort of re-encapsulation of Clark originally giving Dick the inspiration for the name Nightwing, but this time pointing him to what people treat as his default 'home'). If you like the shape of Dick as Bludhaven's hero from fic, you probably will find Seeley's run has stuff to enjoy.
Sam Humphries: (Nightwing #35-41 2016) So Humphries' storyline is another good example of what a lot of the current run of Nightwing contains since 2016 - reinterpretations and new versions of old stories. In this case, it's an adaption of the Hanging Judge storyline to have taken place in Bludhaven in Bruce and Dick's past. I don't mind it as a story, but it's definitely there to remind you of old story beats.
I haven't yet read Benjamin Percy's run, or any of Ric Grayson yet (which is a combination of Scott Lobdell, Fabian Nicieza and Dan Jurgens), or Tom Taylor's run, so I don't want to give you too explicit opinions on these.
In general terms from experience on other titles and what other people have said: I really loved Benjamin Percy's Detective Comics #35-36 story in n52 and I suspect his Nightwing writing is a perfectly acceptable fill; nobody particularly likes the plot surrounding Ric Grayson, and the fact Scott Lobdell had a hand in plotting it seems to me to explain a bunch of the aspects of the scenario premise that upset a lot of people; Dan Jurgens is a DC workhorse who can turn his hand to anything; and Tom Taylor's run has been described as many as 'rewrite the arc of Devin Grayson's run but make it light and fluffy and free of consequences'. I honestly think if you haven't read much Nightwing yet, Taylor's run may be a good transition run to try to see if he's your vibe; I keep getting the impression he probably makes a good intro for new readers.
If you have any other writers you would like my impression of, please ask specifically; as I've said, Dick's been written by a LOT of people over the years.

Give me your most controversial dc opinions!!!
HA YES GLADLY I WOULD LOVE TO (added a read more because i had a lot of words oopsie)
The Titans Tower Incident was in character for Jason Todd. at worst, it's a *bit* over-dramatic and a little cringey, but if you consider his actions, his motivations, and what he *actually* does, i honestly don't think it's OOC for him. he's just kind of a dramatic asshole in that era and i stand by that comic. the issue isn't the comic itself, it's how people interpret it.
i think the DC fandom, specifically the Batfamily fandom, really likes to claim to be progressive for brownie points, but then will have the one token woman that everyone decides is acceptable to hate. like, it's one thing if you dislike Carrie Kelley, i get it. Frank Miller isn't a great writer of women and she can be a lack of a character in the original Dark Knight Returns. but if you go out of your way making constant edits and posts shitting on her, it's *weird*. especially when most of the people shitting on her haven't even consumed her source, and their reasons for disliking her can apply to any other Robin, especially Tim. but as long as you put say, Steph or Cass on a pedestal, you can talk on and on about how you want to kill Carrie for the crime of existing. it feels like acceptable misogyny. i also think this extends to writers. if you put say, Gail Simone on a pedestal, you're free to blame everything under the sun on Devin Grayson. (to be clear i think you can and should hate Devin Grayson for a lot of things, but most rumors about her are untrue and if you look at every badly written comic and go "sounds like something Devin Grayson would write" that's really weird bc everything she's done, men like Chuck Dixon, Tom King, Tom Taylor, Marv Wolfman, etc have done in tenfold.) like, misogyny = bad unless it's That One Woman We've All Agreed To Hate. it's weird and i keep noticing it. and no one seems to unpack it. (i mostly see this on TikTok, not Tumblr tbf)
i don't care if you ship BruDick or not, but it's not weird for canon content to imply or state Dick had a crush on Bruce when he was first taken in. even in canon where Dick sees Bruce as a "father figure" in the most generous sense, that bond took years to build and when Dick was freshly orphaned, he *had* the memory of loving parents and didn't want Bruce to fill that role. you don't have to ship BruDick, you don't even have to like batcest, but if you're vitriolic toward just the idea that "hey maybe a young kid on the cusp of puberty might have some weird feelings to work out about the canonically very attractive mysterious playboy who took him in before seeing him as family because that bond took years to build" is nasty and terrible and wrong to you, you don't like the Batfamily, you just like the nuclear "neat" version of it in your head
the Batfamily characters are *all* too hypercompetent. like all of them are just *too* good at what they do that in order to write them in interesting arcs together, you have to willingly make some of them OOC in order to not immediately have the Problem wrapped up. i get it, Bruce is the greatest detective, Tim is wicked smart, Jason's a heavy hitting brawler, but we've reached a point where all of these characters have so many buffs they're not *fun* anymore. especially not in a group setting where you need to justify them needing each other's help. and even worse-so when they interact outside of the Gotham, you end up making every non-Batfam character seem useless just to make the Batfamily look cool. it's exhausting. i want to see these characters lose fights, look stupid, and not be the best for once. they're all getting so good they're just kind of. boring. which is the worst sin for a character, IMO.
i think we should go like. a good year of all Justice League-related teams not having a single Bat on the roster. just as a cleanse so *someone else* can shine. i get why non-Batfam DC fans are sick of the Batfamily bc jesus. it's oversaturation of the market.
power scaling "who would win" fights are fucking boring and i don't care. that's the least interesting thing about the fandom. you're missing the point of all of these characters if you only care about who could win a brawl. also it's just a stupid debate because the answer will *always* be: whoever the author of the comic wants to win.
the Batfamily is too damn big. i love every single one of them do not get me wrong. i'd die for the little niche characters who are likely never going to be relevant again like Julia Pennyworth or Kate Spencer. but it's too fucking big at this point. it's insisted to us that these characters are family but like. half of them have barely existed on the same page together more than once. it's ridiculous and it cannot sustain itself. none of these characters are allowed proper shine because they'll just get dropped for the next new shiny character. i think Maps Mizoguchi is a cool lil lady, but i know in my soul in like. three years she will fade into comics limbo and we'll have a new shiny character to fawn over. it's a brutal cycle bc DC doesn't know how to give any of these characters follow through, just wants to wave around cool new concepts.
both Under The Red Hood and Death In The Family are mediocre adaptations and strip the most important emotional elements of Jason's story from the plot. you can't properly adapt Jason's death if you leave his mother out of it. like they're phenomenal movies as their own pieces of media, but they lack the necessary emotional weight for Jason.
on the note of adaptations: the Young Justice cartoon is i think the best case study of "how do you react to a piece of media that's amazing on it's own, but is a fucking horrible adaptation?" because like, i can't discredit it. it's a good show. but it's a bad adaptation and i think people using it as an entry point for DC can make their views of certain characters and teams *very* warped. the Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey movie falls into a similar vein for me. if that movie was it's own thing with original characters, it'd likely be a top five movie for me. but because it's *such a fucking bad adaptation* i can't help but hate it for brutalizing the characters and the general concept of the BoP. it should've been a Gotham Sirens movie, and Young Justice should've been a Teen Titans show. and sure, adaptations don't owe us accuracy, but they have negative effects on the comics when they gain popularity. so i struggle to like Young Justice bc of how badly it's affected certain characters.
also on the note of adaptations: the best adaptation of how comic media operates is the Sandman tv show. adapting comics to tv shows or movies is difficult bc comic arcs don't operate the way show/movie arcs do, but the Sandman show proves it's absolutely doable to adapt the storytelling style while still making the typical adjustments you need for an adaptation.
DC needs more Deaf representation. in most areas, DC either matches Marvel or outperforms Marvel with representation of marginalized identities, but it's fucking tragic we have no deal Deaf rep in DC whereas Marvel has quite a few to pick from. this one is personal bc i'm Deaf but it does fuck me up the only option we have is a side character from Tim Drake: Robin who doesn't appear anywhere else and isn't a great character overall. DC i'm in your walls.
on the note of representation, if i see one more person say Titans had "perfect casting" while in the same breath admitting Dick was whitewashed, you are weird and i dislike you. it's really fucking weird that whitewashing is permissable to this fandom if the actor cast/fancast is hot. Dick should've been a Roma actor. Damian should not be fancast as a white actor. it's the bare minimum.
i have so many more but i will end with this especially controversial one: Dan Mora's art is overhyped. that man has the worst same face syndrome i've ever seen and i will not lie half the time i can't tell which Robin he's drawing. his art is technically gorgeous and it's so pretty to look at, but begging for every comic series to be drawn by him is boring and terrible. the art style of a comic reflects it's genre. wanting all comic art to look like Dan Mora's art is sucking the style out of comics. i miss art styles like Todd Nauck's that clearly reflected the genre of the comic.
i lied i have one more i'm REALLY passionate about: Tim's vigilante name after Red Robin should not be bird-themed. naming him Sparrow or Cardinal is *just* as bad as naming him Red Robin longterm. they're *just* as derivative and they *sound* cool but don't hold any real unique identity for Tim outside of Robin. like it baffles me we all agree he needs to move on from Robin and then decided "let's name him Robin Lite". if he has a bird name, it should be Jackdaw so at the very least, he's not red anymore. and Jackdaw could be a fun callback to Drake, in that it uses part of Tim's real name (his middle name, Jackson) while standing out a bit. but if i really had creative control i'd give him a completely unique name. if it has to be Batfamily related, Gray Ghost. but in my head, his name should be Conspiracy. i could write a lengthy meta on why and tbh it is based in my love for the Question and wanting Tim to have a similar detective noir-esque gritty solo, but i genuinely don't think he should be Cardinal or Sparrow. those names only continue his identity issues of being trapped as either Robin or a Robin knockoff.
#necrotic fermentings#bc i'm still drunk so i just fucking rambled i'm so sorry#dc meta#batfamily meta#batcest#i have so so many more but i needed to stop myself#i will defend most of these to my death#some i'm more waffly on bc i think there's nuance to it#but some of these i'm so serious about#and genuine disclaimer none of this is serious#they're all personal opinions and like. fandom is lighthearted yk#yes i'm passionate but also if you disagree i totally get that#almost accidentally deleted this mid-post. oh my god i woulda cried.#anyway i will elaborate on literally ANY of these (esp the tim one) so pls feel free to ask if you want more thoughts. i have them trust me#oh my god this is so long i'm crying. it's 6 am. wtf is going on with me /lh#none of this is coherent i'm SO sorry

Once Upon A Time I Used To Know A Girl
Chapter 13
Carol Danvers x Reader
Masterlist | This work's masterlist | AO3
Summary: Enter Captain Marvel.
Angst, Slow Burn, Amnesia.
Word count: 924
A/N: *Valkyrie voice* You might wanna strap on-strap in!
Brace yourselves.
When You Cage An Animal, The Claws Will Start To Show
You walk out to the common room as Kamala asked you and find the girl accompanied by a tall blonde woman who's standing awkwardly next to her. "This is Carol," the girl introduces her.
"I’m Captain Marvel," the woman begins, staring at a spot on the wall behind you, "you and I were partners for a while. We lived in my spaceship together. I was in charge of the mission that caused your memory loss." Her speech comes out like bullet points, as if she had rehearsed it before arriving. You cross your arms, only half listening to what she has to say. Seeing her standing so close to Kamala makes you remember what Valkyrie said about how she might hurt the girl.
"You have some nerve showing up after this long," you growl, The Captain’s face remains unemotional.
"It was my fault and I want to apologize for it." If there is honesty in her words, she's not doing a good job at showing it.
"No, I've been searching for you for months, I’m gonna go first," you snap at her. "You are a selfish, heartless, pathetic, narcissist," you start going off, "the second you realized I wasn't useful to you anymore you walked away from me and left me to my own devices."
"Do not speak to me that way," Carol orders and takes a step forward.
You chuckle humorlessly, "You don't get to demand respect, not when you didn't take responsibility for your actions. You caused the biggest tragedy of my life and then you bailed out," your face is red with rage, "you were so cynical, demanding that everyone keep you away from me. You're just as arrogant and cowardly as the rest of them."
"Watch your tone." Her fists start lighting up.
"Don't tell me what to do!" Carol blasts a shot at you and you barely avoid it out of pure instinct.
She continues shooting blast after blast at you as you try to get close to her to make it a fair fight. You manage to reach her, not unscathed, and get some hits in when she swings a hot punch to your abdomen, sending you flying backwards and falling on your back.
This is it, you tried to put up a fight, but there is no way you can take up Captain Marvel. She walks slowly towards you, her sense of reason long abandoned, fully taken over by pain, grief, heartbreak, and guilt, she is ready to end this battle. She charges her fist and blasts you without a second thought.
Kamala jumps in front of you immediately and produces a purple wall to protect you, but it was a moment too late, behind her lay your unconscious body. She falls to her knees trying to help you, completely disregarding The Captain.
Valkyrie enters the room after hearing the noise, "Marv, get off of her!" She runs to stop Carol from further hurting you, "I never thought I'd be saying that to you about her," she mumbles under her breath.
Carol doesn't look away from you, "She started it." Her voice is stone cold.
"Right, she started it when she woke up from that mission after being ambushed and she didn't recognize you? She started it when after working with little Marv everyday for months she still couldn't remember you? She started it when in all her desperation she had to resort to asking a private eye for help because you wouldn't allow anyone else to tell her about you?" Valkyrie lectures her.
"Why can't she remember me, Val?" Carol's voice wavers.
"Beating her unconscious is not going to bring her memory back."
"Answer me!" she insists.
"You need to cool off." The King forcefully takes her out of the room.
You gradually come to your senses, Kamala helps you get back up and walks you to your room.
"She really is an Avenger, huh?" you croak.
"Did you not believe it?"
"I did, but, I mean, if the arrows guy can be an Avenger, I’m not sure what I was expecting," Kamala stiffens a laugh, "you did really good back there."
"I wasn't fast enough, I’m sorry." Kamala is still unsure what just happened.
"She's the strongest Avenger and you weren't afraid to get in her way, that takes courage," you say with sincerity.
Valkyrie and Carol take a walk outside, they go in circles around the compound.
"She was taken," Valkyrie states after their second lap, Carol glances at her with an unreadable expression, "the ambush. It was a distraction so they could take her," The King clarifies. After Carol makes no effort to respond, Val continues, "They sedated her and removed all her memories of you."
"How do you know this?" Carol asks, her jaw is stiff with residual anger.
"She's been having nightmares–flashbacks of the procedure, it took us a while, but we put the pieces together."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
The King stops walking abruptly and holds Carol by the shoulder so she does the same, "What, in one of the hundreds of calls you didn’t bother to pick up? You weren't here, you made a decision and we respected it."
"If I had known–"
"If you had known what?" Valkyrie interrupts her, "You knew everything you needed to know the moment she woke up. You chose to run away." There's hostility in her voice, one that Carol isn't used to.
"I was scared," The Captain finally admits, "I fucked up."
"You really did, and that's coming from me."
Chapter 14

Magicians Don't Need Superheros Pt41
First: Link Prev: Link Next: Link
----------
Jackie softly grunted as he woke up, eyes fluttering, and he felt something warm on his chest. He had to blink a few extra times and eventually saw that it was Marvin on top of him. The other man was asleep and hugging an arm tightly around his torso as if he didn’t want to risk him leaving.
“Oh…” Jackie whispered and smiled. “Oh.” His eyes widened, and he felt his face heat up as the memory of everything hit him. “Oh, holy shit.” He weakly laughed in disbelief.
Did that all actually happen?
Did all of it?
Does he have a boyfriend now?
Is that what they were?
“Morning, sunshine.” Chase greeted from one of the other beds, legs crossed under him and phone in hand.
“It’s morning?” Jackie asked.
“Yep.” Chase popped the p. “And, before you ask, Henrik insisted on us taking turns watching you two to make sure you don’t run off again.”
“We wouldn’t-”
“Don’t waste your energy lying.”
“Rude.”
“So you and Marvin? You two a thing now?” Chase changed the subject and chuckled when Jackie sputtered for a moment before finding his words.
“I think?”
“You think?”
“I mean, like…I think? Kind of don’t wanna put a label or something on it without checking with Marv first.”
“Considering the man is gripping you even while unconscious, might say a few things.”
“Well-I-uh-”
“And the whole telling me ‘we’re going to make out’ also gave that away.”
“Maybe.” Jackie’s voice cracked, and he cleared his throat while Chase broke out into a loud laugh.
“Huh?” Marvin mumbled as the laugh was just enough to wake him up. “What?”
“Good morning~” Chase sang.
"Is it a good morning?” Marvin grumbled, rubbing his eye with the heel of his palm. “Feels like I’ve been hit by a truck.”
“Good news, it wasn’t a truck. Bad news, Dark wants to do a whole Ego meeting about this.” Chase sounded annoyed already.
“Me and Jackie got hurt; what’s there to have a meeting about?” Marvin pushed himself up to sit on his knees.
“He wants to ‘plan out a proper execution for retrieving the newest Iplier’.” Chase used his best impersonation of Dark. It was not a good one. He just spoke in a deeper voice.
“I hate it already,” Marvin stated as Jackie grunted while sitting up, leaning back against the bed’s headboard.
“Me and Hen agreed to have us go to get him off our asses,” Chase said. “It’s not till this evening, so we’re hoping Mad can talk with Host first and help him figure out the kinks in his vision. The sooner we get this over with, the better.” He sighed and got off the bed. “Henrik’s going to want to give you two one more look over before letting you guys out and about freely. He’ll probably also scold you a good bit.”
“That’s an understatement,” Jackie said.
“I’ll go let him know you’re both up. I wish you luck.” Chase headed for the door.
“Before you go. Why didn’t you tell the others?” Marvin asked. “About me and Jackie?”
“The first reason was that there was too much chaos to deal with. Anti was being extra…himself to Dark. But the second and main reason is that it’s for you two to either announce or get caught.” Chase chuckled at the last part and opened the door. “It feels like it’d be a jinx if I told the other Septiceyes, but I will admit, I have told Henrik because, as you two will find out very soon, you tell your boyfriend everything.” He slipped out of the room and closed the door.
“Are we that?” Jackie blurted out the moment there was silence in the air.
“Are we what?” Marvin asked.
“Boyfriends? Like-uh-do I…do I get to call you my boyfriend now?” Jackie slowly sank into himself, looking like a turtle trying to get into their shell. Marvin softly smiled and leaned over toward Jackie, pressing a hand to his chest to help keep him balanced.
“I think we can try that.” He leaned in more for a kiss but stopped when the door flew open, and Henrik’s voice shouted;
“Both of you are idiots!”
x~x~x
Marvin and Jackie stepped into the Iplier Manor last, neither really wanting to go to this meeting but knowing it’d be worse if they didn’t come. Henrik said they were fine to leave, so they had no excuses.
“Marvin!” Mad squeezed through the collection of Egos and went up to them. “Mare said he took care of you, but I want to be sure.” He then, without missing a beat, slapped a hand on Marvin’s chest.
“Okay, yeah, sure, go for it.” Marvin chuckled, tilting his head as he watched Mad’s eyes basically go through the rainbow, flashing through the colors and then stopping on bright pink.
“That’s different.” Mad hummed to himself.
“What’s-” Jackie stopped his question when Mad’s other hand was now on his chest. Mad blinked, and the pink in his eyes somehow got brighter.
“Oh!” Mad lowered his hands and smiled at the two. “Congratulations.” He said before turning his head at the sound of his name. “I wasn’t doing anything bad!” Mad protested, walking over to Mare.
“Well, we can add him to the list of people who know.” Marvin sighed.
“Jackie, I am stealing you,” Henrik stated, taking hold of Jackie’s upper arm and leaving with him. Marvin watched as they went over to Edward and caught on quickly to what was happening when Henrik began gesturing to Jackie’s cast.
Looking around, Marvin noticed the others were all grouped off and talking, meaning no one was paying attention to him. And that also meant he could easily slip away and do some…exploring.
And that he did.
Mavin went through the kitchen, knowing if he was caught early, he could claim that he wanted a drink, but he went undetected as he walked through the room. It wasn’t shocking that the kitchen was larger than back at the Septiceye House. Since there were more Ipliers, there needed to be more food at hand. Marvin checked over his shoulder to be sure he was on his own and then stepped into the hallway that also connected to the kitchen. He wondered if the layout of the Manor was similar to the House but just on a larger scale. Maybe there was more than one floor for the bedrooms. Marvin stopped in front of a bright pink door.
“Oh geeze, I wonder whose bedroom this is.” He said to himself with a little chuckle and then continued.
Marvin followed the turns of the hall, passing by more bedrooms, and saw an opening at the end of the hall. It showed a set of stairs heading up and one heading down. If the layouts were matching, upstairs would have the library, and he had to admit he was curious about the size of it. As he neared that opening, something else made him stop. It sent a shiver down his spine, and it felt…wrong.
“What?” Marvin looked at the last door on the floor. “Why…” He moved closer to it.
Jackie said something about his bedroom appearing before Marvin even came to the House. Was this Night’s? Did it feel weird because no one was in it yet? But the space didn’t feel new. He swore he could taste the age of the space. It had his palms itching, his brain relating it to how one would feel in a long-abandoned home. Marvin started reaching for the doorknob. Right before he could touch it, a hand appeared, grabbed his wrist, and pulled it away.
“Don’t,” Dark warned. Marvin just glared at him before using his other hand to grab the doorknob.
And he instantly regretted it.
“Shit!” Marvin cursed as lightning-like pain surged through him, taking the air out of his lungs and would have sent him flying away if Dark hadn’t kept the hold on his wrist and caught the front of his shirt. His legs were numb, making it impossible to stay standing on his own, and as if Dark knew that was the case, he moved Marvin to prop him up against the wall, keeping a hand on his shirt to prevent him from falling forward. Marvin gasped for air, eyes watering as his body still processed the light aftershocks, blood rushing in his ears and heart skipping beats.
“One of these days, you’ll listen to me,” Dark stated.
“Dark!?” A voice shouted from the other end of the hallway.
“Before you jump to conclusions, Jackie, I am helping him.” Dark kept his hand on Marvin’s shirt and held up the other.
“What did you do?” Jackie asked as he jogged over.
“I didn’t do anything. He didn’t listen and touched something he shouldn’t have. He is fine. He just needs a moment to recover.” Dark stepped away and let Jackie take over.
“Marvin? Marv, are you okay?” Jackie asked.
“Lungs…hurt…” Marvin wheezed out as his breathing slowly evened out.
“And they will continue to hurt for at least a few minutes,” Dark said. “He will be fine.” He added again to Jackie and started to walk away.
“Dark.” Marvin coughed out before clearing his throat and trying again. “Dark…whose door…is that?”
“You don’t need to worry about it,” Dark said flatly.
“So it’s not Night’s,” Marvin confirmed.
“You do not need to worry about it.” Dark repeated, the threat clear in his voice. “Now, hurry up with the dramatics. I have a meeting to run.” He dismissed the conversation with a wave of his hand and vanished into the void that was the shadows of the hallway.
“I hate when he gets all cryptic,” Jackie muttered.
“Agreed,” Marvin said.

an underrated supergirl story i feel a lot of people would like is “convergence: adventures of superman”. i understand why it would fly under the radar, because the event as a whole wasn’t very good. but the story was. it’s two issues and in them a pre-crisis version of kara finds out she’s going to die soon. it’s written by marv wolfman, the same guy who wrote crisis where kara’s death took place. the story also has cute moments between kara and clark and that’s never something we can have too much of.

the story is basically like the happy many returns storyline in the 90s supergirl series except better. would definitely recommend.
#supergirl#kara zor el#this story might not be that underrated#but i’ve barely seen people talk about it#and it’s really good#so i’d recommend checking it out if you haven’t already

So, Felicia Hardy mentions having a girlfriend in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and this has resulted in a lot of discussion... I wanna talk about it!
One thing I find really interesting about the conversation is that so many articles discussing it credit Felicia's bisexuality to this moment from 2021, where she and Odessa Drake have an on-panel kiss followed by an off-panel one-night-stand.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a4735f6a4c79e2d3393768ae736fb197/706306da97bd9bf8-fb/s540x810/48cec18b4f26055aa1e9ce973e25fc22ac5b7b13.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/91e140c5eb42ee47b60984b26dd56506/706306da97bd9bf8-fe/s540x810/aba8a26ae60716e3bdd836eec88518a2deb99a91.jpg)
While this is pretty friggin' gay and good for them, I feel like reducing the story to "Black Cat kissed a girl in 2021 and that's why she has a girlfriend in the video game" is missing a lot of the larger context... so let's discuss some of the history of Felicia Hardy, AKA the chaotic crime bisexual Black Cat.
Felicia Hardy debuted in 1979. Tamara Blake, her "oldest friend" and female lover, first appeared in 1984, only 5 years later, debuting in the Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man Annual "Cat and Mouse."
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e818550e35a05012d191dab6fa56ec64/706306da97bd9bf8-45/s540x810/28fdd6cf5be4d4f41c0bf64955dac08437a75287.jpg)
Dropping by for a night of "harmless frolic," Tamara robs Felicia, aiming to play a game of cat-and-mouse with her friend. While their relationship is not explicitly romantic in this story, Tamara is portrayed as very close to her ex-partner-in-crime and very familiar with her relationship habits. She is surprised by the reveal that Black Cat is trying to settle down with Spider-Man - and to be skeptical about if Felicia will be able to tie herself down to one man... almost as if she knows Felicia has a pattern of behaviour when it comes to monogamy.
I don't know if this story was intentionally gay or not, but it would be used as a foundation for later queer storytelling about Felicia, so it seems worth mentioning it here!
What is pretty explicit, however, is Felicia's relationship with her partner Diana in the 2002 Spider-Girl series. They are just called partners, not lovers, but the framing and discussion of it is obvious enough that, in my opinion, if you know that gay people exist and can accept the possibility of them being gay, then you probably will read this and go "Oh, yeah, they are gay."

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/157784558985f1a3d153fa8ad08d9a37/706306da97bd9bf8-1b/s540x810/853c4da3103c960f2c6c54bf76e75ecd6e10c262.jpg)
This story does not take place in Earth-616 and is primarily focused on Mayday Parker as Spider-Girl and Felicity Hardy as Scarlet Spider, but Felicity does have two moms - and we love that for her!
Jumping ahead a bit, Tamara returned via flashback in Black Cat #10, released in 2020, and this fleshed out their backstory together. It revealed how they trained together under Black Fox as their mentor and clearly shows them using slight-of-hand to hold hands and canoodle without Fox noticing what they're up to.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/88041e5ae649198370a0700b3a24f4b6/706306da97bd9bf8-3e/s540x810/523d719941dc206a64f2ae15aab6322793c69c02.jpg)
This is just a super-cute panel to me. That's such a clever use of slight-of-hand; I love it so much...
The next year, in Black Cat Vol 2 #3, there's a vision of Black Cat surrounded by a harem of her lovers, which includes Tamara and Odessa alongside several of her more famous male affairs.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b4ae9b7e4e13b0022f041c2630e7c832/706306da97bd9bf8-d0/s540x810/1d484fd0cca1c3d10f9d708ccdfc359ba57a59ff.jpg)
Shortly thereafter, she kissed Odessa on the lips, as discussed earlier. In case the earlier evidence was not enough for you, Felicia Hardy is now formally unquestionably a girl-kisser. We even later get to see her and Drake's one-night-stand via flashback, in case there was any lingering doubts about what happened.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2e502701a8073bf19022aff3cb70a5b6/706306da97bd9bf8-b9/s540x810/e0bccda5f02f26117fa465524fdca60d2e5c1d89.jpg)
However, it also doesn't end there. It's not like Felicia just kissed a women, Marvel patted themselves on the back, and now she's been back to dating Peter Parker exclusively. There are plenty of comic characters who have had one defining "queer moment" and mum's been the word on their queerness since then... Felicia, meanwhile, is very loudly bisexual.
Immediately, she got a Pride variant cover in 2021 and has been on at least one cover every year since. My favourite is probably this one from 2022, which is both very poly and also features Peter Parker... I'm sure if you'd ask Marvel corporate they'd say he is just there as an ally, but it's still funny to me.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d1905fbf4c5feeb3755ced2f623cfc54/706306da97bd9bf8-42/s640x960/b244d5ba63e325e18f263005f3ff06a758c4307b.jpg)
In 2021, she was the character used for the grand return of Jessie Drake (Felicia really has a thing for women with last names that end with -ake, apparently). Jessie was Marvel's first explicitly transgender character, debuting all the way back in 1992. After getting off to a rocky start, Felicia blows up a building with Jessie's help and they go out for dinner.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4c591fd8d0cf6516720e6e71bec370ee/706306da97bd9bf8-a0/s540x810/4ed8f85b6af182871ffeb5eb3a0a54c6cf10cf50.jpg)
(This story was not followed up on as the book it was supposed to lead into got cancelled. Drake has not so much as cameoed since. F in the chat for Jessie Drake).
In 2022, there was an 5-issue mini-series all about Tony Stark and Felicia bonding over their mutual problem of supervillain ex-girlfriends trying to murder them. Of the two halves of the pair, Felicia gets the better deal - Tamara not only teams up with Felicia and Tony to fight Tony's ex, but they do so much flirting that Tony forgets that are not currently dating.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8dbd093af9ac62c5a4e9205b68976bed/706306da97bd9bf8-db/s540x810/e6d0fa297380513e62d848fdd11b42961a85c0f3.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ce02bf42c2193444dbb487020fcf809f/706306da97bd9bf8-c1/s540x810/9a8e23e6f75dee608f9b1ec3f23906f22a8c204d.jpg)
And, finally, in 2023, there was another Felicia story in a Pride issue wherein she hooked up with a pseudo-diety and also worked with Gambit to fuck with some transphobes in the process. Good for them!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ba0871c189a8bc4d1db0d65c43275097/706306da97bd9bf8-78/s540x810/8b85b0017b6e1b52ec467859d65c754e17b666d6.jpg)
This is not by any means a definitive list of everything gay Felicia has done - she famously flirts with MJ and Cindy a lot, for instance - but I hope it provides some larger context to Felicia's sexuality in the game.
Moreover, I hope it shows that queer storytelling isn't always about writing a single gay kiss that generates headlines. A lot of Marvel and DC queer storytelling that goes viral isn't the actual multi-issue multi-comic-run queer stuff; it's the one big kiss or something subtextual that happens to feature MCU heroes with better SEO then people like Felicia have... and I think it's the more under-the-radar stuff that's often more valuable.
