Out of all the characters in Bakugan I thought I'd draw a lot of, I never would have guessed I'd fall in love with Marucho of all people 🤣 On my, now 3rd, rewatch of Bakugan with my sister we talked about what we would like out of Marucho's character which made me excited to draw the weird kid 🤣 I would love it so much more if he acted as a little brother to the whole team, the secluded rich kid who turns into an annoying little gremlin who tags along. Now I have more of an appreciation for the blonde~

One of the few good things from MS was the arc of Marucho. Realising how imperfect Dan is and how dangerous is to idolize anyone
YESSSSSS EXACTLY.
I really don't think we talk enough about Marucho's growth in MS1 and how we see bits of his trial resurface amid the bleak situation with Bakugan Interspace, especially concerning Dan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've already talked here about the significance of Marucho's nickname and how Dan is most likely the reason why Marucho created it. Marucho outright told Dan that he was the reason why his family moved to Battle Town/Wardington. Marucho mentioned Dan by name during his trial when he talked about the people who helped him change. Season two featured a couple of moments where Marucho would rush to find Dan if he was in trouble and even showcased Marucho having trouble sleeping because he was worried about Dan unlike Shun.
The show repeatedly highlights how important Dan is to Marucho, how vital he was in Marucho’s transformation into a more confident person, as well as how much Marucho admires Dan as both a leader and a person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what does MS1 do? It slowly breaks down Marucho’s image of Dan.
The usually confident and transparent Dan Kuso is no more. He spends less time with his friends, sneaks around to train in secret, hides his nightmares, lashes out when questioned and puts on a brave face, pretending as if everything is alright.
As Dan and Drago keep putting the audience in danger with their uncontrollable power, the unheroic behavior of Interspace’s resident hero is brought to light, scrutinized and condemned by their fans. Even so, Marucho’s faith in Dan doesn’t waver and he actually sympathizes with what Dan must be going through, being unable to battle the way he used to when battling is such a big part of who Dan is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan leaves Interspace without a word and the repercussions of his actions fall on Marucho (and Shun) to clean up. Marucho has to worry about the chaotic state of Interspace, Shun’s reckless attempt at establishing order through dominating force, Rafe and Paige’s disdain for the Brawlers, as well as Dan’s absence. And it’s at this very moment when the Brawlers are disconnected and Marucho feels more alone than ever that his father enters the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is no coincidence. Ive already spoken about this scene here and here so all I’ll say is that it’s a brilliant way to highlight Marucho’s growth since his trial by placing him in a situation where the very group that helped Choji become Marucho is no longer present.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see how even when Marucho wishes to step back into his old persona of the obedient son, he simply cannot forget his friends or the game they created because of the impact it had on his life. This, once again, makes Marucho reevaluate his identity and reconcile the two versions of himself that are Choji Marukura, the heir to the Marukura fortune, and Marucho Marukura, the Aquos Battle Brawler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan returns to Interspace expecting a hero’s welcome, but what happens instead is that his Mechtogan goes on another rampage, (nearly killing team Anubias) the Brawlers only just learn about the existence of Mag Mel through Dan after he kept quiet about it for who knows how long, and Dan once again downplays the severity of the situation and also dismisses Marucho’s new position as team leader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The genuine confusion on Marucho’s face when Dan expects him to hand over the title of leader so easily is quite something. As if Marucho being acknowledged as the new leader on his own merit means so little to Dan, someone Marucho looks up to.
Though he may not know this, Dan’s actions put Marucho in a position where he almost gave up Bakugan for good and now he's standing there and laughing, as if this whole situation means nothing. For the very first time, we see Marucho snap at Dan and it’s clear how angry and disappointed he is with Dan’s attitude following his return. Ultimately, Dan learned nothing from being away for so long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is no doubt that Marucho admired Dan greatly because of certain heroic qualities of his and became upset when Dan no longer embodied those, but his understanding and sympathy towards Dan remained even when Dan became the furthest thing from a hero unlike Noah. He just wanted Dan to trust him the way Marucho wholeheartedly trusted Dan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marucho felt betrayed by Dan because they were supposed to be teammates, friends, family, and Dan didn’t trust his friends to be able to help him with his problems.
Marucho felt betrayed because the very person who started the Brawlers didn’t have faith in them to have his back, didn’t even give them a chance to be there for him, and then left them behind. Marucho had to work tirelessly to bring back his team, to make their fans believe in them again, to make his teammates believe in the Brawlers again. And when Dan returns, he sees none of Marucho’s hard efforts. He only thinks of himself and fights by himself, not as part of the Brawlers. Marucho expected better from Dan and he is continuously let down.
Tumblr media
MS1 is really good at showcasing the dangers of putting someone on a pedestal and how much it hurts when their actions no longer meet your expectations.
In particular, Marucho, Noah, Chris and Soon are the characters who learn this lesson the hardest and grow from it, strengthening the bonds between themselves and their teammates, as well as becoming more confident and self-assured individuals. I think it’s a shame how the general dislike of Mechtanium Surge (as well as the English dub) prevents most fans from being able to see Marucho’s continued growth and how far he’s come.

choji "marucho" marukura-hansen, 17, 5'0'', he/him, gay, mostly norwegian (father is a quarter jp)
an old fashioned name for a new money boy. quiet, understated designer brands that he has other people get for him. hopefully his mature dress style makes him look older. his sneakers are actually white, i didn't just forget to color them.
surprisingly low maintenance, save his coffee addiction. eager to experience the real world with his friends.
compsci nerd, worked on the digital interface of bakugan. on meds for anxiety, and private tutors out the wazoo.
gains class consciousness.
dead fish eyes, always seems to be staring through you. physically addicted to caffeine, his pupils seem to lock onto coffee and only that.

Marucho’s nickname & the importance of it
Marucho’s full name is Choji Marukura (or Marukura Choji.) The name Choji contains the kanji 兆 which means “trillion” and 治 which means “govern,” which fits the position Marucho has been born into as the heir of a large family-owned conglomerate. The only people to call him by his given name are his parents (though, that is not the case in the English dub.)
This is showcased in S1EP7 when Dan and Runo introduce themselves to Marucho’s parents and Dan almost calls Marucho by his nickname.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Marucho’s character page on the Japanese website for the Bakugan legacy series, you’ll find a sentence at the very end that stands out from the rest.
Tumblr media
“He seems to dislike the name “Choji.”
How come? Why doesn’t Marucho like his given name? I’d say S1EP31 addresses that question, as well as provides extra context for who inspired him to come up with his own nickname: Dan.
Though this is absent in the English dub, Marucho’s reason for moving to Wardington (or Battle Town, Tokyo) is specifically to meet Dan. Marucho’s father tells Dan as much in S1EP7 and Marucho later confirms it when they’re alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for why he dislikes his name, Marucho had to fight his past self during his trial. It was a version of himself that he couldn’t stand, because he hated remembering the days when he used to work hard to meet his parents’ expectations at the cost of his own happiness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that in mind, and seeing as how Marucho insisted on living in the same town as Dan so he could meet him, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Marucho created his own nickname as a way to distance himself from “Choji,” the obedient child who would do what his parents told him without question. It’s very likely that Dan influenced him in that regard, seeing as how Dan is the only other Brawler to have a nickname.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, this is reinforced in S4EP11. The Brawlers are fractured and distant, Dan is missing and Interspace is in a dire state of disorder and chaos. It is then that Marucho’s father returns with a proposition; that Marucho tackles the problems inside Interspace as part of the Marukura company, rather than as a Brawler.
It’s pretty clear that although Marucho’s father allowed him to play Bakugan, he would much rather have Marucho return to his side as the future head of the Marukura family company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With no one by his side and the Bakugan game no longer the way he remembered it to be, Marucho easily fell back into his old role and referred to himself as Choji instead of Marucho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Choji” is Marucho as nothing but the Marukura successor, the future head of the family who tries to suppress his wants for the sake of keeping his parents happy, while “Marucho” is the real him who loves Bakugan and loves his friends. In order to be Choji again, Marucho had to forget about the things dear to him that made him who he is. But try as he might, Marucho couldn’t forget about any of those things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His friends and Bakugan helped shape his identity and so eventually, he expressed this to his father and stood his ground. And his father ultimately acknowledged that Bakugan had been a very positive influence towards his son’s growth as a person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marucho was saved from his circumstances by the Bakugan game and the Brawlers. And so in S4, it was his turn to keep the Brawlers together and protect the Bakugan game that they created.
Not as Choji Marukura, the successor, but as Marucho Marukura, the Aquos Battle Brawler.
