Match review: Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

I despair.

United's current form and longer-term away form has been unreliable, and with the injury list at Carrington it wasn't expected that United would win at the Emirates today. A draw would be acceptable.

The match began in shaky fashion, but United's clinical edge got a cheeky lead courtesy of Marcus Rashford (above) and a great ball from Eriksen, which itself came from an impressive interception from the Dane. This then revealed United's immediate weakness - concentration. Arsenal turned around and scored inside a minute to even things up. Given how fickle Arsenal fans can be and how quickly they lose faith, this was prime time to shut up shop til half time and ramp up the pressure.

The second half saw improvements from both sides and an even, back-and-forth game played out until the 86th minute and a moment of inspiration that saw substitute Garnacho through on goal. A tidy finish, 2-1 United, everyone's gone ballistic... and then the ref checks VAR and rules offside.

Here's the issue: it was - just - offside, so in that sense it's a fair verdict. BUT we have to ask why it was checked and why, when so close, advantage wasn't given to the attacking side? Garnacho was a big toe offside. That's not a 'clear and obvious' to deny the goal.

United were their own enemy from this point, switching off and conceding two. A centre back pairing of Maguire and Evans is a desperate measure that felt really risky (and proved so) but also things like Rashford pulling out of a 50/50 that led to the Jesus counter & goal... just lacking that bravery and soul-burning desire. It's why players like Keane and Rooney are underrated.

Ten Hag in his post-game interview with Sky Sports said he felt we played better than we have so far this season and deserved more today, but that the goal being disallowed, no penalty for a foul on Hojlund, and a goal allowed when Evans was fouled, had all combined to spoil the day. Maybe he has a point, but I feel Martinez/Lindelof/Varane don't make that mistake for Arsenal's 2nd goal. I also think the Hojlund 'foul' was soft and not a penalty.

3-1 is a sore defeat but consider the facts: Martial was useless, Rashford scored despite near-zero supply, Casemiro was sloppy, Eriksen overplayed, AWB awful first half, Dalot out of position, and a debut for Hojlund. It was always going to be tricky but the signs are there that the team are slowly getting the message. Maybe the international break is at a good time to help players reflect on form and tactics, but we need a big response and three points at home to Brighton when we're back.

Ava Max - Torn 2019

"Torn" is a song by American singer Ava Max, released on August 19, 2019, as the third single from her debut studio album, Heaven & Hell (2020). The song was written by Max, Madison Love, James Lavigne, Thomas Eriksen, Sam Martin, and the producer Cirkut. It is a dance and pop song with lyrics describing the internal struggle between wanting to stay and leave in a relationship. An accompanying superhero-themed music video was directed by Korean-American director Joseph Kahn.

In Poland, "Torn" peaked at number three on the Polish Airplay Top 100 chart and was certified double platinum in the country. The song reached number three in the Netherlands, number four in Slovakia, and number nine in Slovenia. On the Scottish Singles Chart, "Torn" bowed at number 18, while it peaked at number 87 on the UK Singles Chart. "Torn" was certified gold in Austria, Brazil, France, Italy, and Switzerland.

"Torn" received a total of 58,4% yes votes.

The Sing-Off, s.4 ep.2 — Party Anthems

Some competitors on The Sing-Off have described the filming process as their most grueling summer camp experience ever. The audience might imagine dozens of performers doing nothing but singing and dancing together all day as one long party, but that's the magic of the performing arts. It takes a lot of hard work to make having fun look so effortless.

Group opener

Most party anthems aren't very complex in terms of music or lyrics, and that's kind of the point. They're intended to be simple, fun, and repetitive so the listener doesn't have to think too hard about structure or meaning. They're meant to inspire dancing, not dissertations. But when your audience is presumably sitting and watching rather than grooving along, it's smart to graft a few different songs together to make things more interesting.
