The Grave of Francis Kinloch

According to various sources in the collection "Kinloch family history and genealogy research files" in the South Carolina Historical Society archives (and according to the surprisingly helpful findagrave.com), Francis Kinloch is buried in the Rutledge plot at St. Michael's Churchyard in Charleston, SC. However, his grave is apparently unmarked. One source in the Kinloch collection notes, "He is buried in St. Michael's Churchyard beside his wife - the grave is not marked." Another source in the Kinloch collection writes, "He was buried in St. Michael’s church yard (in the Rutledge lot near the Meeting Street wall)." The wall in the back of the photos does run along Meeting Street.

In the top picture (left to right) are the grave of John Rutledge (father of Martha Rutledge Kinloch, died 1800); the grave of Martha Rutledge Kinloch (daughter of John Rutledge and second wife of Francis Kinloch, died 1816); the grave of Charles Rutledge (son of John Rutledge and brother of Martha Rutledge, died 1821); a grave with a small, unreadable headstone; and a grave with the initials T.B. and the year 1805 on the footstone. Perhaps the grave with the small headstone is Kinloch's grave? He died in 1826 and thus would have been buried after the other Rutledges in the plot, but this would place him in a spot close to his wife.

Interestingly, Francis's siblings Cleland Kinloch and Mary Esther Kinloch Huger are buried next to each other at the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg, SC. The difference in burial sites is likely a matter of where they died. Cleland died at his plantation in Stateburg. Mary Esther lived in Stateburg for a good portion of her life and presumably died there as well. Francis died in Charleston. (x)
