“What’s your favourite scary movie?” (marta/Jill) @demongemz
Tumblr media
it was unexpected to a lot of people that not only was halloween marta's favorite holiday, but that she loved horror movies, especially during this time of the year and every genre from camp to the classics and yes, even the occasional gore. if she didn't have a strong stomach, she wouldn't have become a doctor, after all. she just couldn't lie. she thought over the question for a moment before deciding with a nod. "probably nightmare on elm street. the original... not the remake. a villain that stalks you in your sleep? truly a terrifying concept." she decided. "and yours?"

Putellas Jr. Headcanons.
Couple: Mapi León x Putellas!Reader
(Reader will be called Alondra )
Au!Omegaverse. Alpha x Alpha
Word count: 2.7k
Warnings: None, just that English is not my first language, so I'm sorry if there are any mistakes.
Enjoy~
Tumblr media
PERSONAL LIFE. FRIENDSHIPS, FAMILY.
Alondra Putellas Segura (1999) is an alpha.
Her name was chosen by her father.
Younger sister of Alexia Putellas (1994) and Alba Putellas (1997).
When Alondra grew up she had problems with her scent glands because they did not develop correctly, which ended up affecting her scent. She has a sweeter scent, an aroma not characteristic of an alpha and characteristic of an omega, which is why she was often mistaken for one.
Her scent is sweet, warm, with a touch of vanilla and soft wood.
She followed in the footsteps of her older sister and became a professional soccer player.
She is good at learning languages. The longest it has taken her to learn a new language was 6-7 months.
“My mission in life is to annoy Alexia, to make her feel alive”
She has her group of friends outside the world of football. Matthew and Danielle are Omegas, Jackson and Eric are Alphas. Also Jackson and Danielle are siblings.
Alondra is a hyperactive person, she can’t stay still and some people on the staff suspect she has an attention deficit.
She shares tattoos with her sisters.
When she is nervous, she plays with her ring or the lace of her shorts.
She is a friend of Kerstin Casparij (she has a very similar personality), Jill Roord and Viv miedema. As a joke, they said that Alondra was Dutch in another life.
Even though she is no longer a Young Alpha, she is still treated like a puppy by Alexia, Irene, Kim, Marta and Jenni.
She is the queen of practical jokes in the locker room. No one is safe, not even Alexia or the coaches.
She has the most chaotic relationship with Alba. They love each other, but they can also argue over the silliest thing and the next minute be cuddling on the couch.
She likes to annoy Lucy and if it were an Olympic sport, Alondra would have already won the Gold medal.
She can fall asleep anywhere. On the bus, in the locker room, on the plane and in any uncomfortable place you can imagine.
Her playlist is absolute chaos. You can find everything from reggaeton to alternative rock and the occasional ABBA song.
She always has gum in her backpack.
She prefers WhatsApp audios to text messages because she's too lazy to write.
She's always the last to leave the locker room because she'll keep talking or bothering someone.
She's the typical one who comes in with the music at full volume without headphones, forcing everyone to listen to her chaotic playlist.
She's the only one who can annoy Alexia without serious consequences. Anyone else tries and gets the death stare.
Alba, Olga and her have a WhatsApp chat just to complain about Alexia when she goes into 'intense older sister' mode.
When she's with her mom, she automatically becomes calmer and sweeter. It's like her chaos off button.
When she was younger and Alexia was dating, she interrupted in the most annoying way possible.
At Christmas, she's always the one in charge of making the funniest (and sometimes ridiculous) gifts.
She's the one who sends memes at any time of the day without context.
When she gets obsessed with a series, she won't stop until she's watched it all in a couple of days.
She likes to play video games, but only sports or racing ones because she doesn't have the patience for history ones.
If she finds something she likes (a dessert, a song, a restaurant), she'll repeat it until she's tired.
If she's bored, she starts throwing things in the air just to see if she can catch them with her feet or head.
She wears her sweatpants really low just to piss Alexia off.
She has an obsession with rings and always wears at least one.
She sometimes paints her nails black or dark colors, but she bites them when she's nervous.
Sarcasm is her second language, and she even uses it in interviews.
She talks a mile a minute when she's excited and the only one who can stop her is Alexia with a "Alondra, breathe."
Alexia still can't get over her going out with Mapi, every time she sees them together she makes a face of "how did this happen."
When she comes home, she hangs on to Alexia as if she were still a puppy.
Every time she visits home, Alba and Alexia check her new tattoos to see if they're "suitable" after having joked that the next tattoo she would get would be something related to Real Madrid (she would never be able to get a tattoo about RM) (She hates RM with all her soul).
In her teens, when her hormones were at their peak, she suffered from not being able to impose her presence with her scent like the other Alphas. So she developed a confident and defiant body language to compensate.
Although she doesn't have a strong scent, her Alpha instincts are still there. She is extremely protective of her own, but she masks it with pranks and chaos.
With Alba, she is the typical Alpha sister who teases her younger Omega, but if someone treats her badly, she lets out a low growl that makes anyone back off
With her mother, her bark or Alpha disappears. The only person in the world who can make her sit and eat quietly without a fight.
She is clingy with the people she loves. If she is confident with someone, she will hug them by the neck or lean on you without giving you a choice.
Nothing like the typical Alpha. This makes some Omegas feel comfortable with her immediately, without noticing her dominant presence.
Many Alphas tried to mark her unconsciously because her scent awakened protective instincts in them. The habit did not last long after Alondra brushed them off with a challenging look.
Growing up as an Alpha but with a scent that did not match caused her many doubts in her adolescence. She did not feel completely Alpha or completely Omega.
The media and some fans have been speculating for years about her dynamic as an Alpha. Many believe that she is an Omega who identifies as an Alpha. Alondra does not care.
Alondra's dick size varies between 19 to 23 centimeters, while Mapi's varies between 17 to 20 centimeters.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE.
She studied and started playing at La Masia as a forward, where in 2015 she had the opportunity to move up to the first team and debut alongside her sister in the same team.
In 2016 Arsenal set their sights on her and decided to sign her, there was a conflict between Barcelona and Arsenal, since the first team did not want to lose Alondra completely and Arsenal did not want to accept her on loan. Finally, an agreement was reached and Alondra left as a new signing for Arsenal.
In 2019, Alondra was close to winning a Ballon d'Or, finishing in second place.
Number 11 in the first years at Arsenal. First season in Barcelona, she wears number 18 and after Lucy's departure, she takes over number 15.
Arsenal: 2016-2017 to 2021-2022.
Barcelona: 2022-2023 to the present.
Alondra was part of the Spanish senior team between 2018-2022, being part of the 15 movement.
Getting to know the English team in her first year playing in London and in the first international break, thanks to Leah and Chloe who introduced her at a camp. (Alondra did not want to return to Spain and preferred to stay in London as she had a silly argument with Alba and pride was stronger).
Then very close to all the other English girls.
When she gets angry in games she usually shouts rude things in Catalan, or when she wants to bother in the locker room.
Yellow card duo with Katie McCabe.
In 2022 she decided to leave Arsenal and return to Barcelona. They are the only teams she has played for. The reasons for leaving were due to internal problems she had at the club.
CHELSEA'S HATER N°1
Who gives the most content on social media (team and personal)
At Arsenal, she and Katie McCabe had an unofficial competition of who could receive the most yellow cards without being sent off.
Leah and Chloe consider her their ‘Spanish troublemaker’ and take her everywhere when she is in London.
In the national team, Jenni Hermoso was her ally in mischief.
She always wears the same cleats when she plays an important match. She is superstitious about it.
Has a friendly rivalry with Patri Guijarro at Barça. They are always competing in training.
The terror of the alphas of other teams because she never stops provoking on the pitch.
Can turn anything into a challenge, from who gets to the locker room first to who hits the crossbar the most times.
Always has energy to spare, she is the typical one who wants to keep running in training when everyone is dead.
She is the terror of the medical staff, because she hates staying still when she is injured. Since her scent is not typical of an Alpha, she sometimes confuses others about her rank. This has been a problem on the court, where some rival Alphas underestimate her…
She grew up with a certain complex about her scent, especially when she was younger and other Alphas looked at her strangely for not smelling "correctly." But over time she learned to use it to her advantage, especially in provocations.
With the Omegas on her team she has a very marked relationship: she bothers them all the time, but if someone makes them feel uncomfortable, she completely changes and becomes threatening.
She does not mark everyone with bites, but she leaves "her mark" in other ways: hugs with a lot of physical contact, rubbing her head against her teammates' or biting their wrist when celebrating a goal.
In important games, her Alpha instinct is triggered. She plays more aggressively and her team uses her as a "territory marker."
If a rival Alpha tries to intimidate an Omega on her team, she is the first to intervene. Especially if it's Patri or one of her Omega friends.
In the locker room, she lays on top of her fellow Omegas without warning. "So they smell like the pack," she says.
She doesn't like being seen as a "weak" Alpha because of her scent, so she's one of the first to jump into verbal fights with rival Alphas.
Her scent may be sweeter, but when someone irritates her, it becomes stronger. In a match against Chelsea, her scent changed so much that Leah asked her if she was okay.
Some Alphas taunted her by saying that her scent made her "less Alpha." Katie McCabe was one of the few who told her to her face that "a real Alpha doesn't need a strong scent to get noticed." From that moment on, they became inseparable.
When she arrived at Barça, Patri and Aitana also doubted her Alpha presence... until they saw her play. Now Patri calls her "the infiltrated Alpha."
In the locker room, she sits between the Omegas because she likes the warmth of her presence. At Arsenal, her place was always between Leah and Viv.
On the national team, Irene Paredes spent half of the training camp reminding the others that, despite her deceptive scent, Alondra was an Alpha.
When she is upset or in the middle of a competition, her scent changes and becomes more spicy, with a slight hint of clove. It is the only time she imposes herself as a traditional Alpha.
In the locker room, she was often asked to calm panicked Omegas because her scent calmed them more than that of the other Alphas.
She always felt that she had to prove more than any other Alpha to be recognized as such. In every match, she played as if she had something to prove.
At Arsenal, some new Alphas doubted her presence until they saw her train. One time, a new Alpha commented that Alondra “looked like an Omega with too much energy.” Kim Little replied: “Tell her that on the pitch and see if you still think the same.”
Despite her soft scent, her Alpha instinct is immediately activated when she senses danger for her pack. If an Omega on her team is attacked on the pitch, Alondra is the first to arrive with a defiant smile and her body ready to defend.
Although she is an Alpha, in the Arsenal pack she would often curl up between Leah and Viv, as if she were another Omega.
RELATIONSHIP WITH MAPI.
They started dating Mapi in 2018.
When Alexia found out she wanted to hang Maria.
Designed some of Mapi's tattoos, but she has also suggested some absurd ones just to annoy her.
Shares a tattoo with Mapi. (Looks can be deceiving)
She has a list of tattoos she wants to get but can't decide because Mapi always convinces her to wait.
She doesn't obsess over couple marks like other Alphas, but she does obsess over couple scents. Mapi always ends up smelling like her because Alondra hugs her by the neck and hides her against her chest after games.
She knows that her bite isn't as strong as other Alphas, which made her insecure at first. She thought she'd never be able to properly mark her mate. But Mapi reassured her by telling her that, if she wanted to, she'd bite her until the venom was gone.
When Mapi is in heat, Alondra doesn't leave her alone for a second. If anyone gets too close to her, even her own teammates, her inner Alpha wakes up and automatically growls.
At first, she was afraid that she wasn't "Alpha enough" for Mapi. But Mapi took it upon herself to show her that it didn't matter.
Mapi sometimes bites her just for fun, but when Alondra does it, she does it with intent.
Mapi loves to see her in her clothes, especially her old t-shirts. It's her way of "marking" her without needing a bite.
One time, Alexia found them cuddling after a game, and her Alpha got so activated that she was in a bad mood all day.
When she first met Mapi, she thought she would be one of those who wouldn't take her seriously as an alpha. But Mapi sniffed her once, smiled, and said, "You're different. I like it." From then on, Alondra knew Mapi was her person.
Mapi loves her scent. She says it's "gently addictive," especially after workouts, when sweat intensifies it.
When they sleep together, Mapi clings to her shirt or collar, as if Alondra's scent relaxes her.
Sometimes when Mapi is in heat, Alondra feels like her Alpha instinct isn't enough. But Mapi always reassures her with a look, reminding her that it's not the scent that defines her, but who she is.
When Alondra is in heat, Mapi becomes much more territorial than usual. She's not aggressive, but her body language changes completely: she stays close, with her hand on Alondra's back or an arm over her shoulder. Her scent also intensifies and becomes thicker, like a silent warning.
Although she is not the type of Alpha who seeks to mark all the time, with Alondra, it is different. She does not mind if another Alpha approaches her partner, but she always makes it clear who owns the territory. She loves that Alondra smells her after training.
First I want to give credit to @insomniakisses who gave me the idea to do this and helped me with many things

Summaries under the cut
Jill's Ponies by Ruby Ferguson
Jill unexpectedly finds herself the proud owner of Farmer Clay's piebald pony. But that's when her problems begin because ponies are expensive. Where will she find the money?
The Strictest School in the World by Howard Whitehouse
14-year-old pioneering aviatrix Emmaline Cayley is afraid of one plummeting to her doom. Fortunately, 12-year-old Robert Burns, an indestructible village boy, is not. Absurdly unafraid of bodily harm, "Rubberbones" is the ideal pilot for Emmaline's experiments with flight. But before Emmaline can perfect a flying machine with the aid of her new friend, she is sent off to St. Grimelda's School for Young Ladies -- to be cured of her decidedly unladylike ways. It is a school so strict, so severe, so forbidding that it makes the brutal misery in the tales of Charles Dickens look cheery by comparison. With a horrifying headmistress, terrifying teachers and food that is even worse than Aunt Lucy's, this medieval stronghold also houses a terrible secret and a mysterious way of keeping its prisoners, er, its students in line. All Emmaline can think of is escape. But no one has ever escaped from St. Grimelda's. And our heroine soon realizes that the only way out is to face her greatest fear.
TJ Young & the Orishas by Antoine Bandele
Fourteen-year-old TJ grew up normal in a secret community of gifted diviners in the heart of modern-day Los Angeles. His powerful sister was ordained to lead his people into a new age of prosperity, but her mysterious death in Nigeria threatens to destroy the very foundations of TJ's world.
Desperate to pick up where his sister left off and uncover the secrets behind her questionable death, TJ commits himself to unlocking the magical heritage that has always eluded him. So he enrolls in Camp Olosa-a remedial magic school for the divinely less-than-gifted in the humid swamps of New Orleans.
But little does he know, TJ is destined to cross paths with powerful spirits of old thought lost to the orishas.
Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child by Maria T. Lennon
Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child stars the hilariously cheeky reformed bully and tween hacker Charlie Cooper as she tries to ditch her middle-child reputation and make cool friends at her new school in Los Angeles. But being cool isn't as easy as it looks. Charlie has to face down the mean girls and decide between right and wrong once and for all when she learns the terrible truth behind Marta the Farta's bad attitude and loner status. And Charlie has to do it all in outfits meant for the runways!
Unicorns of the Mist by R. R. Russel
Deep in the heart of a mist-shrouded island, an impossible secret is about to be discovered.
Twig is used to feeling unwanted. Sent to live on a pony ranch for "troubled" girls on a misty, haunted island, Twig is about to discover the impossible — someone who needs her. Jolted awake from a bad dream, Twig follows the desperate whinny of a terrified horse out to the stables. There in the straw is a bleating little scrap of moonbeam. A silver-white filly with cloven hooves and a tiny, spiraling horn.
A baby unicorn.
Now Twig knows what secret is hiding in the island's mist: the last free unicorn herd. And a mysterious boy named Ben who insists that this impossible creature is now Twig's to care for. That she needs Twig's love and protection. Because there's something out there in the deep, dense shadows that's hunting for them...
Beatrice Bailey by Sandra Forrester
Beatrice Bailey is tall, skinny, and about to turn twelve years old. On that birthday she will get her official classification as a witch. But will she be named an ordinary Everyday Witch or a specially empowered Classical Witch? When the big day arrives, the Witches' Executive Committee can't decide how to classify her. At last, they agree that her Maximum Magic Level must be tested, and to pass the test she must break a spell that has been cast by the evil sorcerer, Dally Rumpe. Thus begins Beatrice's series of adventures. Breaking the spell takes Beatrice and her three best friends to several dangerous realms within the witches' sphere. Uni: Lina and Wren 2/2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wren finally has their sporty little car that they inherited from Grandma Marta again. 🎉
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wren and Lily caught up over peppermint mochas...
Tumblr media
...while Lina hung out with Trent. She's right there, dude.
Tumblr media
I finally remembered to give some of the uni kids microwaves so they can have instant ramen.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Wren decided to make soup instead.
Lina: Mrrrrgh, wha's the racket?
Tumblr media
Wren: Soup's fucked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luckily, Jill Stein the Alien Firefighter was here in an instant to save the day. Wren tried to tip her, but she was already running off to the next emergency before they could!
Wren: Mom lied, this soup isn't comforting at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lina is unfazed by the tiny kitchen fire, and Wren has decided to eat cereal for the time being.
Tumblr media
Both of them have evening classes, so they decided to head over to the campus square and see if they could make some rent money busking. This would be a fabulous shot if the instruments weren't covered in snow.
Tumblr media
No! Don't tip the dormie, tip us!!
Tumblr media
Thankfully Obi has their backs.
Lina: Hey, thanks, man!
Obi: Sure thing. Sweet sound!

Important update: Brashen, the most boring of all the dormies, has finally developed an interesting characteristic. Unfortunately, it's this.

oh my goddddd, GO AWAY.

Hey, Cammy.
Camille: S'up?

Look at Wren go, getting so many As on their final exams. Autumn must be so proud of them!

Hi! You may have answered this before, and if you have, I'm sorry for asking a question you have already asked.
Do you know the age range for Christine actresses? Like how old the oldest actress was when they played here. I know the youngest has been 18 and I know Kaley Ann Voorhees (I remember her specifically since she was the Christine when I saw it on Broadway) was one of those. (I'm excluding Emmy Rossum from this since I'm talking strictly stage show).
I'm curious because she's always been a dream role, but I think I might be reaching the age of being too old {25}. Even if I am, though, I'll be content with doing it in the privacy of my own home. Lol.
So first, I just kind of want to say that I'm really worried for the state of the industry if you and others start thinking that 25 is "too old" to play Christine. (This is what happens when you keep casting younger and younger, CamMack and co.!)
Now, as for your actual question: I think we should separate it into two related but still somewhat different categories: who are the youngest and oldest Christines ever (basically the minimum and maximum age ranges, good as little factoids of knowledge) and what is the general age range (probably more useful for someone actually looking to get the role).
To start with the first, a couple of corrections! The youngest Christines have actually been around 16-17 years old, and no, I'm not including Emmy Rossum in this: actresses like Katie Hall and Amy Nuttall were 16 when cast as understudies and 17 when they performed the role, while Kaja Mianowana, Paulina Janczak, and Marta Hadžimanov were 17 when cast as principals (though typically sharing the role with a somewhat older actress). Additionally, actresses like Olivia Safe, Sarah Bakker, Julie Goodwin, and Amy Hudson Holder, were 18 to 19 years old when cast as understudies or alternates. Kaley Ann Voorhees was actually 20 years old, not 18, when she was first cast in Phantom, making her comparatively older than some of the others on this list, though she was still the youngest actress to play Christine on Broadway.
Now as for the oldest, those would probably be Barbara Fonyo who was 50 when she ended her run, as well as Lisa Vroman, who was 47, and Jill Washington, who was 46, when they ended theirs.
However, the general age range of Christines, I'd say, is probably mid 20s to 30s, and you'll typically see that in casting calls where, if they specify an age range, will say something like "20-29" and what-not. I have said that it seems productions are casting younger, and honestly it seems like every new Christine is only in her 20s, but there have been several actresses cast in the show in their 30s even in the last decade or so: Valerie Link in Hamburg (34), Ali Ewoldt on Broadway (34), and Meghan Picerno in the World Tour and Broadway (maybe 34/35).
But ultimately, your actual age will matter less than what age you can play as (e.g. some people can play teenagers and young adults into their 30s and 40s) and, more importantly, your skills when it comes to singing, acting, and (to some extent) dancing. That should ultimately be the focus when trying to become Christine, not your age!

From the Archives: Lyle Menendez Case Ends in a Mistrial; D.A. to Retry Brothers
By Alan Abrahamson
Jan. 29, 1994 12 AM PT
The Menendez murder case ended Friday without a single verdict as a second jury was declared deadlocked, the jurors hopelessly polarized over whether Lyle and Erik Menendez were coldblooded killers or long-suffering victims of abuse within their family’s gated Beverly Hills estate.
Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Stanley M. Weisberg declared a mistrial in the Lyle Menendez case Friday afternoon, ending the six-month trial. A separate jury for younger brother Erik Menendez was declared deadlocked two weeks ago in the Aug. 20, 1989, shotgun slayings of their wealthy parents.
Prosecutors promised to try the brothers again for first-degree murder. The trial, broadcast live to a nationwide television audience, was dominated by a bold defense, which insisted that the brothers killed in fear after years of being raped and molested by their father, Jose Menendez.
That defense, it turned out, transformed jury deliberations, dividing both panels into rival camps--believers and skeptics. Jurors said their debate took on a nearly religious fervor at times.
Records unsealed Friday showed that the juries were split almost in half on most counts, with those skeptical of the brothers’ stories pushing for murder convictions, while the believers held out for lesser manslaughter convictions.
“There was basically a war,” Leslie Abramson, Erik Menendez’s lead attorney, said outside the Van Nuys courthouse. When the Erik Menendez jury deadlocked Jan. 13, Abramson declined to call it a victory win for the defense--as some legal experts did. But Jill Lansing, Lyle Menendez’s attorney, did not hesitate to proclaim Friday’s hung jury a victory.
“I don’t think that anybody at the beginning of the trial believed . . . these two young men were abused or that they could have been motivated by fear,” Lansing said. “Obviously a great number of people now understand that that was the situation.”
Both defense attorneys said they did not believe that jurors at any new trial would convict the brothers of first-degree murder, and Lansing suggested that “it would be in everyone’s interest” to reach a plea bargain.
Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti said that was out of the question. “There will be no plea bargain,” he declared at a news conference in a courthouse law library.
Garcetti said he had an “ethical, professional and moral responsibility to go forward” with a retrial, despite the $1 million-plus price.
“Be damned with how much money it’s going to cost. We’re going to seek justice in this case,” he said.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Pamela Bozanich, the lead prosecutor in the trial, dismissed suggestions that the hung juries were a loss. “I think that society is a loser in this case,” she said. “It appears now that vigilantism is not against the law, at least in some minds. And that’s a terrifying thought.”
Weisberg scheduled a Feb. 28 hearing to set a new trial date for the brothers. Lyle Menendez, 26, and Erik Menendez, 23, remain in custody without bail.”It is just very sad,” said Marta Cano, an aunt of the brothers who--like many relatives--testified in their defense. “The discouraging thing for me is I cannot imagine the state of California is going to continue spending money in a case like this, where there is no way they will ever find 12 people to agree.”
Though prosecutors have hinted that the discovery of new evidence will help them in a retrial, legal experts cautioned that the abuse defense seemingly had a strong emotional pull on many jurors.
“The question remains whether, even with changed prosecutorial strategies, the district attorney will be able to share his vision. The evidence to date . . . suggests that prospect is not very likely,” said Peter Arenella, a UCLA law professor.
The jury votes show that neither panel was close to a conviction on any count, though no juror voted for an outright acquittal of either brother.
The votes also served as a reminder of the unpredictability of juries. Although Erik Menendez was widely viewed as more sympathetic than his cooler older brother, his jury had more votes for first-degree murder--five--and proved far more contentious than the Lyle Menendez panel.Members of the Erik Menendez jury said their deliberations became almost a battle of the sexes, split largely along gender lines. All votes for first-degree murder were reportedly cast by men.
The judge asked each jury to choose from four verdicts, from first-degree murder--meaning premeditated--down to involuntary manslaughter, the legal term for an accidental killing. Some experts had speculated that jurors might compromise on second-degree murder, meaning a killing that was not premeditated. But compromise was not to be.
The Lyle Menendez jury, five men and seven women, voted this way:* In the killing of Jose Menendez: three for first-degree murder, three for second-degree murder and six for voluntary manslaughter.* In the killing of Kitty Menendez: three for first-degree murder, three for second-degree murder, five for voluntary manslaughter and one for involuntary manslaughter.* On the charge of conspiracy to commit murder: three for first-degree murder, three for second-degree murder and six for not guilty.
The Erik Menendez jury, six men and six women, voted like this:* In the killing of the father: five for first-degree murder, one for second-degree murder and six for voluntary manslaughter.* In the killing of the mother: five for first-degree mother, three for second-degree murder and four for voluntary manslaughter.* On the conspiracy count: five for first-degree murder, one for second-degree murder and six for not guilty.
Two juries were used in the trial because some evidence was admissible against only one brother.
It was a case that began as a whodunit, evolved into a lurid soap opera and finally set off debate on the cutting-edge social issue of childhood sexual abuse.
Marked by twists worthy of a theatrical melodrama, the case saw the Menendez brothers go from being portrayed as the orphaned victims of a possible mob hit to--after their arrests--spoiled brats who killed their parents out of hatred for everything but their money. Then the defense once again offered them up as victims--a claim belittled by prosecutors but which earned Lyle and Erik Menendez passionate supporters among courtroom and television onlookers.
Of those, there were many. The trial, replete with tabloid-style elements--homicide, sex, family wealth, secret tapes, a philandering psychologist and the cachet of Beverly Hills--became a staple of the cable Court TV network. Jay Leno made the brothers and their post-killing spending spree part of his monologue for weeks. “Saturday Night Live” did a skit.
Just a few weeks into the case, defense lawyer Abramson proclaimed in court: “Let the sleaze fly!”
And so it did, often in astonishing detail. The defense introduced a love poem written by a key prosecution witness, psychologist L. Jerome Oziel, to his paramour. Prosecutors prodded defense witnesses to delve into Erik Menendez’s sexual orientation. And a parade of witnesses provided a virtual trivia test of incidents to portray the Menendez household as the flip side of Ozzie and Harriet’s.
Their testimony revealed that Kitty Menendez did not clean up ferret droppings around the house and that her hair needed a “bleach job.” Jose Menendez made a niece eat caviar against her wishes.
The brothers spent 19 days on the witness stand, providing more such minutiae, but also the broad drama of the trial--with their tearful tales of sexual abuse and descriptions of the shootings.
Erik Menendez said he was molested from age 6 to 18, and that Jose Menendez stuck pins in him during sex. Lyle Menendez testified that his father molested him, too, from age 6 to 8. Crying, he said he also abused his younger brother. After they testified, thousands of people from around the country wrote the brothers at County Jail, identifying or empathizing with them, defense lawyers said.At first, the case hardly seemed like it would inspire such emotions. When Jose Menendez, 45, and Kitty Menendez, 47, were found dead, the sons were seen not as suspects but as grieving victims, even by the police.Interviewed at Beverly Hills police headquarters hours after the slayings, Lyle Menendez suggested that his father’s business dealings might have provoked the killings.
Jose Menendez was the boss at Van Nuys-based Live Entertainment, a video distribution business, and “could step on a lot of toes,” his older son said.Lyle Menendez hired bodyguards for 10 days, saying his parents “were murdered by either the cartel or the mob and he was in fear of his life,” a guard testified.
Fear, however, did not slow Lyle Menendez’s shopping. He spent $15,039 on three Rolex watches and money clips, $70,484 on a Porsche and even made a $300,000 down payment on a restaurant in Princeton, N.J.
But in March, 1990, seven months after the slayings, the spending came to a halt as the case took a 180-degree turn: The brothers were charged in the murders. For police, the key break came when a woman named Judalon Smyth alerted them that her ex-lover, psychologist Oziel, was treating the brothers--and that they had confided to him that they killed their parents.
It took more than three years to bring the brothers to trial, largely because of legal wrangling over the admissibility of notes and tapes made by Oziel.
During that time, books and movie deals were cut. The media portrayal of the brothers--now as greedy playboys--was so pervasive that when jury selection began, nearly all the potential jurors knew of the rich Menendez family. Some said they were sure the brothers were guilty.
Then, a week before trial, Abramson disclosed that the brothers would claim they acted in fear after years of abuse, portraying them as children who erupted when they could take it no more.
At the trial, the brothers came dressed in sweaters to make them look younger. Defense lawyers referred to them as “the boys.”As part of its strategy, the defense called about three dozen teachers, coaches, relatives and friends of the Menendez family, who related tale upon tale of the brothers’ childhood, portraying the household as a grim place where hugs and smiles were rare.
Amid the references to caviar and ferret droppings, Jose Menendez was depicted as domineering and authoritarian; Kitty Menendez as a cold, rage-filled enigma with a drug and alcohol problem.
When the defendants took the stand, each said the killings took place after a series of confrontations that began when Kitty Menendez ripped off her older son’s toupee on Aug. 15, 1989.
Two days later, the defense said, Lyle Menendez threatened their father that he would tell outsiders about the alleged molestation of Erik Menendez if it did not stop.
Though such testimony might have gained sympathy for the brothers, under California law it was not enough to make a case for self-defense. Under the law, child abuse--no matter how severe--does not justify murder.
But the brothers’ attorneys went a step further, contending that the years of abuse made the brothers incredibly fearful of their parents. The brothers testified that they were sure they were about to be killed on the night of Aug. 20 when their parents entered the TV room and closed the door behind them. The brothers said they thus burst inside to kill their parents first.Prosecutors gave a different version, saying that the parents were coldbloodedly blown away while watching TV, eating berries and filling out a college application for Erik Menendez.
Still, the defense made an all-out effort to bolster the notion that the brothers perceived that their lives were in danger. A string of experts in child abuse--a psychologist, a psychiatrist and professors in nursing, psychology and social work--said extensive jailhouse interviews persuaded them the brothers were telling the truth.
Prosecutors did not put on any expert witnesses, saying that would only have lent credibility to what Bozanich belittled as psychobabble.
Prosecutors reminded jurors how Lyle and Erik Menendez had lied in the past to police, the media and family about the slayings. In one dramatic moment of the trial, prosecutors also caught the brothers in an apparent lie in court.
The setup was their testimony that they went to a Santa Monica Big 5 store on Aug. 18, 1989, to buy handguns. Deputy Dist. Atty. Lester Kuriyama then disclosed that the sporting goods chain had not sold handguns since 1986.
Prosecutors also scored a victory when Weisberg ruled that jurors could hear a tape recording of a session the brothers held with Oziel several months after the slayings. The defense had fought to get the tape sealed on the grounds of patient-client confidentiality, but the judge ruled it relevant because the brothers had made their mental state a central issue.
On the tape, the brothers said they killed their mother to put her “out of her misery,” and that their father’s infidelity caused her despair. There was no mention of sexual abuse or self-defense.In the end, though, no piece of evidence was enough for a verdict. The Erik Menendez jury gave up after 19 days. The Lyle Menendez jury took 25 days--although it met for only five hours over three days this week, after enduring a long break because of the Jan. 17 earthquake, which damaged jurors’ San Fernando Valley homes and the courthouse.
Jurors insisted that the quake had little impact on deliberations that were seemingly doomed from the start.
“We regret to inform the court that we are still unable to reach a verdict on any of the three counts or lesser charges,” said the note sent Friday by the jury foreman, a 35-year-old mailman.
At that, Weisberg declared a mistrial.
As the courtroom cleared, Abramson draped an arm around Lyle Menendez. Looking over at Lansing, the other chief defense lawyer, Lyle Menendez smiled.
