The Last Samurai (2003) dir. Edward Zwick
“I have questions.
Questions come later.
How's your poem coming?
The end is proving difficult.
You believe a man can change his destiny?
I think a man does what he can, until his destiny is revealed.”

Masterclass! I’ve had many stimulating, fascinating, brilliant, talented, fun guests. None more so than writer, director, and producer, Marshall Herskovitz. There’s a reason this human has won more Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild, Directors Guild, Peabody, and Humanitas Awards than I can count… not to mention an Academy Award nomination. Wow, just wow! You don’t get all those awards for writing, creating, and making great television and movies without being a great storyteller, and boy is Marshall that! From his eighth-grade short story to his first attempt at filmmaking, AFI––miracle-ing his way in, meeting Ed Zwick the very first day––a partnership that would change both their lives and all of ours… Snuffy’s specifically and significantly. We talked thirtysomething from throw-away lack of interest to the cataclysmic creative shift in what was possible on series TV. From Day 1 to the present commitment to the reboot usurped by the pandemic. Marshall and Ed are still passionately committed to seeing it through to air and I don’t doubt with these two at the helm it will come to pass. Marshall talked about My So-Called Life, Claire Danes, Special Bulletin, and the NBC backlash on his Emmy-winning debut, Jack the Bear, Dangerous Beauty, The Last Samurai, and Tom Cruise––wonderful inside scoop there. Likewise, DiCaprio and Blood Diamond. We talked Marshall’s environmental activism and seemingly sensible solution and concluded with the political race and what 2024 may hold.
A rare guest I didn’t know going in, Marshall quickly felt like a dear treasured friend. The conversation was effortless, exciting, insightful, and inspiring. Loved it!Can’t wait for more… on and off the screen.

Up To Snuff (2021) | Full Movie | Music Documentary
Millions of people have been touched by his music, yet few know the journey, hardships and triumphs of American musician and composer W.G. Snuffy Walden. Friends and collaborators share personal stories, laughs and insights about this generous soul who overcame the excesses of rock and roll to find success as one of the most beloved composers in television history.
Infused with Snuffy’s music throughout, the film features luminaries from television, film and music, including Aaron Sorkin, Martin Sheen, Tom Arnold, Timothy Busfield, Fred Savage, Marshall Herskovitz, Steve Lukather, Chaka Khan, Amy Keys and Eric Burdon, and scenes from The West Wing, Wonder Years, Sports Night, and thirtysomething.

I confess that as a young girl I loved a man who would not marry me for want of a dowry. I confess I had a mother who taught me a different way of life. One I resisted at first but learned to embrace. I confess I became a courtesan. Traded yearning for power, welcomed many rather than be owed by one. I confess I embraced a whore's freedom rather than a wife's obedience.

Dangerous Beauty, Trivia
Rufus believes that Marco's dark edges were lost in the editing. ''I did enjoy the film, but when I read the script, I saw a lot more darkness than was actually there,'' he said. ''It was a grubbier, dirtier, more vicious story.''Marshall Herskovitz, the film's director, laughed when he was told of Mr. Sewell's remark -- as if to say, typical Rufus.
''The thing about Rufus,'' he said, ''is that people have been trying to get him to play leading men for a long time, but he's always wanted to play bad boys. Rufus sees himself as a character actor. What we worked on together during the shooting was opening the window on this man -- Marco, not Rufus -- to reveal a vulnerability and an openness of heart. That was finally the great achievement of the part for him. He'll always have that twinkle in his eye, that humor, that mischief.'' Not only that, but Mr. Sewell resented it when the film's title was changed from ''The Courtesan'' after 95 percent of the people in preview audiences said they didn't know what a ''courtesan'' was (about half confused it with ''cortisone'').
''What if the 'stupids' honestly don't know what a courtesan is? What's wrong with that?'' Mr. Sewell said. ''You could learn a word.'' NYT, 1998
