so i have to be a butch(/femme) gatekeeper bc otherwise i lose touch with my sense of specificity and then there are no words to describe the extremely stigmatized, taboo, unique thing that i'm doing in the world

butches are: naturally masculine women who have a lesbian sexuality defined giving, initating, and directing the experience. this is archetypally expressed by using a strap-on. butches pass as men at first glance, because they do not soften their masculinity the way that women are expected to. butches wear masculine clothes, have short haircuts, and some butch women take masculine coded nicknames. butches confront the indignity of being "ugly" "mannish" women, questioned in bathrooms and other single sex spaces. butches and femmes are defined by their relationships with each other, which makes their relational differences legible and meaningful. that is to say: there is no butch without femme and no femme without butch.

butches are not:

defined by their visual aesthetic. lots of women have short haircuts and buy a few items in the men's section. only women who have a complete, easily read masculine appearance without any attempts to soften it femininely, AND are lesbian, partner with femmes, and are proceptive sexually are butches.

defined by gender dysphoria. some butches develop gender dysphoria in a homophobic climate where masculinity/maleness and femininity/femaleness are conflated, convincing us that we won't be desired for our unique combination of female masculinity. but many other women develop gender dysphoria for other reasons, and they are not butch lesbians

doomed to medical transition or life passing as men. passing as a man IS a survival tactic that butches have employed since time immemorial, but it is a sadness and a curse. Now, there is pressure on butches to understand ourselves as not-women because of our sexuality and how we express ourselves. But our identity is defined relationally with femmes, who value us as women. So passing as a man actually prevents you from living a full butch/femme life.

so the "butch" lesbian i know who got married in a white dress and full face of makeup, heels, and acrylic nails, is not in fact "one of us" despite the fact that she has short hair and wears button ups.

and the transman i know married to a woman is also not "one of us" because he has never lived a butch lesbian social identity and believes his personality puts him on a separate level from his wife and all other women

and the tomboy lesbians i know with short or long hair who are "sporty" but would never be mistaken for men are also not butches no matter how "masc" they claim their fashion is

and butch4butch and femme4femme lesbians are not in fact butches or femmes, because butch and femme identities are orientations towards each other, not aesthetic identities. Feminine and masculine are better words to describe these couple patterns because they do not appropriate language used to locate a specific style of lesbian couple pattern to instead describe aesthetic preferences.

Heteronormativity and (Fan)Fiction

Let me talk about something, that I am thinking a lot about right now. And that is heteronormativity and how fiction interacts with it - especially romantic fiction. Mostly, because I think there are a few parts that do not get spoken about quite as much as other things.

While reading some fanfictions - and some indie published smut - I did realize one thing: A lot of femdom straight romance actually feels a lot more queer than some fiction featuring gay romances. Doubly so when it comes to m/m fiction. Triply so m/m fiction written by women.

There has been a lot of talk within the queer community about heteronormativity and how it impacts us. Because, yes, a lot of us are drawn into comphet at some point, being pressured to get into a straight relationship to be "normal".

But it is of course something else, too.

See, while I was in the hospital earlier this year, I shared a room with an older gay man. An old, gay, white man, who was married to his partner. And obviously in his eyes, the queer rights movement had already reached everything that was to reach, because he could marry his partner - and was allowed to fuck around. And he did not quite see that the experience of him a cis, white man working in a business field that is fairly high regarded and somewhat well paid, was maybe not representative for everyone else.

And that is obviously the big thing here: White homosexual couples, who are at least middle class, and at least pass as having a monogamous relationship will be a lot easier accepted. This goes doubly so, when in their relationship they at least appear to pass for the "heterosexual roles". That is: A more male partner, and a more femine one. Be it the butch and femme lesbian couple, or the bear and twink gay couple.

This does reflect in fiction, too. And it leads to a lot of gay fiction kinda mirroring this.

Look, folks. I don't think there is a big issue in general with women writing m/m slash stuff. But I do think there is some issue when those m/m slash stories get written basically as a straight story with very clear straight roles. With one man being the clear "woman", who will more likely end up as the damsel in distress, who will more likely be the caring one, the one who might in a fantasy setting take up the healer role, and if there is sex will be the bottom. And mind you, will always be the bottom, because switches often do not exist in those stories.

Ironically this is a bit less common with femslash, which does feature a lot less butch/femme ships than one would assume. While yes, those do exist, there is way more femme/femme stuff around, though butch4butch exists as well.

Though this might also be based on the fact that femslash more often than not gets written by women as well - who might just project the kind of female character they identify with into their fiction.

Ironically - and here is where we loop back to the femdom - it even loops back into straight romantic fiction. Because yes, normally femdom romance fiction is very, very rare and often only get published indie.

It shows even stronger in fanfictions, though. Because in fanfiction we will see those rare examples were a male character might be a lot softer, feminine and submissive, will actually be once more pushed into the strong male role of the kinda toxic protector.

I noticed this a lot in terms of how Hector/Lenore is written in the fandom. Sure, there are some other femdom stories with them. But most of the time, Lenore just loops back to being the damsel, while Hector steps up to be the protector. Even though that is kinda the opposite of what we see in canon.

It also is the reason why I dislike seeing Astarion with female Tavs/Durges so much. Because Astarion is very much a twink and a bottom. He wants to be the one who gets protected by someone else and such things. But in a lot of m/f stuff I see with him, he just takes up once more just the classical male love interest role. Which I find boring.

And sure. Like, everyone can write what they can. I am not saying you can't. I will not read it, but it is totally fine for people to write it.

I just want to note that it is definitely rooted in patriarchal gender roles - and heteronormativity. And I find that really, really, really icky.

There is also the fact, again, that I am really not a big fan of the whome "Top and Bottom in male gay stories are permanently assigned roles, that do not only assign a sex position, but also a sort of pseudo-genderole". And yes, there are more than enough gays (especially those who self-identify as tops), who still want to cling to that idea. Because it is more in line with the rest of society. And because in their heads, too, there is this idea that the penetrated partner in sex should be more submissive.

It still gets to me that so much fiction and fanfiction keeps this kinda stuff up. I mean, queer stuff is the place to let go of patriarchal norms and genderroles and still, people... somehow don't?

The two ships where this irks me the most right now is Trevorcard (Trevor/Alucard) and Mizrox (Mizrak/Olrox) in Castlevania. Where most people just go: Trevor and Mizrak are the tops - and Alucards and Olrox are respectively the bottom.

And, let's face it. This originates that to a western eye Alucard and Olrox read more feminine due to their long hair.

Now, wihen it comes to Alucard I find it mostly annoying. But when it comes to Olrox? Well, I cannot help but think: "It's a bit racist, right?"

Because the fact is, that reading Olrox as "more feminine" because of his long hair is just pushing western ideas onto an indigenous character. But to him, of course, that long hair is a very masculine trait. So, yeah... I just cannot help but feel that folks really project a lot of shitty stuff onto a shipping.

In the end... I really just wished that fiction - original and fanfiction alike - would go more an explore genderoles and relationship dynamics outside of heteronormativity. Because this kinda stuff it shitty, and does a lot more harm than good.

im historically not an expert on cowboys (my friend is tho) so all my ideas and inspiration come from westerns but im thinking:

danielle larusso is new in the area. her mother brought a decrepit ranch with all of their economies and they’re now trying to give it a second life. in doing so they meet mr miyagi, an old man living not far away from the ranch but quite isolated from the others in town. he takes care of cattle and he’s very polite and very kind to danielle and lucille (who have had to deal with their share of sexist assholes since danielle’s dad died). lucille makes business with him to buy some of his cattle and they decide to actually start working together. she invites him to dinner one evening and he never really leaves. he helps her and danielle fix the ranch and also starts teaching danielle how to take care of cattle and especially horses. danielle doesn’t really have her own horse yet but she wants one very badly and so miyagi offers her a beautiful palomino mare for her birthday.

one morning, danielle goes in the barn to take care of her horse and sees another horse already there. a black american quarterhorse and behind it is hidden a bruised and bleeding johnny lawrence. johnny is an outlaw. she used to be a rich girl back in town. her mother had married the mayor of the town when she was a young girl and johnny was promised to marry one of his rich (and old) friends but she fled and instead she joined a group of outlaw who commit petty crimes to survive. she and the other cobras had just done a heist when they were separated while running away and she was shot in the back. she didn’t know where to go. she saw the barn in the horizon and decided to hide there until the police lost her tracks but with the blood loss she fell asleep and didn’t manage to leave the barn before morning.

danielle brings her back home and nurses her back to health (but at the same time she wonders if she should throw her out because johnny is 1) a criminal 2) a fugitive 3) a huge bitch). a little after johnny gets back on her feet, the cobras come and meet her and tell her that they all need to split up for a while because the sheriff is after them, johnny gets really worried because she has nowhere to go apart from going back to her house but if she goes back to laura and sid she knows she’ll be married by force. danielle, who cannot keep her nose out of other people’s business, tells johnny she can stay if she starts working on the ranch. which is how johnny ends up training horses with danielle and mr miyagi.

im also imagining slow burn love story between danielle and johnny: fishing trips that end with taking a swim naked in the lake, talks in front of the fire where danielle learns to like johnny and johnny hides how much she wants to kiss danielle, dinners with lucille and mr miyagi who can see what’s going on there, the two of them racing on their horses. just, lots of domestic shit that end abruptly because kreese, another outlaw who helped johnny escape sid, comes to collect what he believes to be johnny’s debt. he wants johnny to work for him, danielle thinks his intentions are a lot darker than that but johnny tells her that he truly helped so that she just needs to pay her debt back and he’ll leave her alone. except kreese doesn’t leave her alone and mr miyagi has to step in. (you know you gotta have a duel in a western).

johnny gets hurt in the crossfire and it makes danielle realize that she’s in love with that blonde meathead. johnny scares them all by staying unconscious a lot longer than last time. the cobras come to visit and they all wait at johnny’s bedside. when she wakes up, bobby tells her that danielle has not moved ever since she’s been hurt and that she should get her head out of her ass and tell the other woman how she feels. danielle comes to see her, johnny thanks her for taking care of her again and they both manage to say i love you at the same time. happy ending, all is well, they train horses on the ranch until they’re old and grey (but still in love).

A ship I have with said character: she has her professor butch girlfriend Gil for that, but I could also imagine an alternate reality in which some of her nonromantic relationships with women (like Isabel or Celia) were somehow romantic instead.

A random headcanon: I haven't really built out her backstory but I've always kind of imagined her not having a dad for some reason and Von becoming her father figure.

A ship I have with said character: let's be honest Rodney ships himself with Allison even though he knows that even if it could happen he would never find it in himself to ask. Finding out that Allison is in an open relationship has been a devastating and impossible blow.

A BROTP I have with said character: Rodney and Isabel will never stop being the top shelf of brotps for me (yes I know they're related but). Same deal with Rodney and Hatt. However Rodney also grew up with Spinder around all the time, and they're good friends, but I really haven't explored that one enough. And like I said in a long-ago blorbo blursday post, Rodney and Gil are really mlm/wlw solidarity and they get along extremely well.

A NOTP I have with said character: Declan. I don't think it's squicky but I promise you it does not make as much sense as it might seem, not least because Declan has never considered himself not married.

A random headcanon: I don't know if I ever actually mentioned this but he has been accomplice to an actual crime, namely when Isabel broke into one of her exes' houses to take back her stuff and he stood watch. He also loves slimy foods.

- our first date was over facetime, we watched portrait of a lady on fire and chatted for like 3 hours. after that i tweeted that “i think im in love and am going to mary her”. we got married 567 days later.
