Okay can anyone help me out on this one cause I just learned something that makes complete sense, explains a lot of things, and seems to be supported by the internet but has few primary sources, so naturally I distrust it.

The thing I have learned is that consanguinity (i.e. marriages with a degree of blood relationship) was one of the only reliable ways to get a divor-I mean annulment in the High Middle Ages, so some people intentionally married within close blood degrees to provide an escape clause should the marriage fail. In one famous example, Eleanor of Aquitaine divorannuled her first husband Louis VII on the grounds that they were second cousins, only to swiftly remarry Henry II, her first cousin.

Now, there's obviously a lot of other reasons for consanguineous marriages (The House of Hapsburg: Consolidating power will ruin your jawline), but this one in particular fascinates me, because it means I can make jokes about how many wars could have been prevented by no-fault divorce. But I would like to know if this holds up historically, so please pass this around until I find someone who knows something.

For Roberts/Nite it's often getting out and moving a bit. They both love to dance, and that's often a good distraction, leaving them a relaxed sort of tired at the end of the evening. And Roberts will also whip out the Classic Hymns of 1899 Vol. 2 in a pinch.

For Jones, it's going for a walk under the closest thing to an open sky he can get in the Neath. For years he'd lived in a damp cell on the roof, and being in an open space with the Zee air in his lungs always does him some good. It wouldn't stack up to the surface equivalent, but it's what he can get, and for that reason he's contented with it.

Roberts was briefly in contact with his sisters shortly after he'd left for London, but letters were not so easy to write or to send, and he'd eventually stopped writing. He blamed it on logistics, but in reality he was ashamed. He was embarrassed by his family, how provincial they were, unwilling to make the simple changes that would maybe grant them some respect or opportunities in life, that they seemed to have no desire at all to leave their village and do something else with their lives other than become wives and then widows to miners. He'd had the thoughts for a while, but his father's death from respiratory illness and was the catalyst for him finally deciding to run. The first letters were cordial, asking him to come home. They'd certainly dissolved into pulp in the Zee during the Fall. He has no kin, no wife, and it's better that way. It's a complication, a source of shame. It distracts him from his duty.

Nite has no memory of his family, but thinking on it too hard results in an overwhelming feeling of unease and shame. He tries not to think on it too hard.

Jones had a good relationship to his family before his imprisonment. He would get into the occasional debate with his brothers over politics and his activities, but they were all good-natured. In the aftermath, he'd lost contact with most of them. He'd broken their mother's heart and utterly ruined their name, one sibling had told him. He did not find Jones' reply to this that this was doubtful, considering the commonness of their name amusing. To this day, there's only one sister who still speaks to him. They correspond as regularly as postal delivery between the surface and the Neath will allow.

as of now just over a full season plus a smattering of random eps in i'm more convinced of at least a 'pretty much any of these characters might've had casual sex that didn't develop into anything else and made their working relationship awkward for a few months' sort of situation if not an actual polycule on voyager than on ds9. in part bc of the actual character dynamics (a lot of 'well SOMETHING'S going on here') and in part bc they're stuck together for potentially the rest of their lives and can't take a day trip to bajor/week off to visit earth and any family/spouses there so.... the situation encourages that sort of decision lol

Do you have any book recommendations for secular Jews? I feel really disconnected from my culture/racial identity/other Jews, but I’m not religious beyond cherishing the practices of our tradition, if that makes sense.

hmm.. i personally think that there can be no difference drawn between the culture, ethnicity, and religion of judaism. so, i don't see how a book about jewish culture could be written without reference to religion. i haven't read or encountered such books. but as a deeply religious person i haven't sought them out, so maybe others who see this can give suggestions. however, i'll try and provide some that might be what you're looking for (also quite a few of these are available on the internet archive)! i will be posting a more extensive reading list later on, so keep an eye out for that if you'd like. books marked with an asterisk are endorsed by the rabbinical council of america.

BINDING COMPONENTS: What makes us fight for this person?

Why is that? Saturn in astrology holds much responsibility, loyalty, and tenacity when met in the synastry or composite chart. This can create a for better or worse in astrology. In the 7th house or conj, it brings a lot of obligation to the love. When these types of relationships end, it can feel like a loss of love, but also a failure to both parties involved. Saturn has a hard time with failure, after all, Saturn is known to endure right? So both parties will have a hard time letting go and not fulfilling the "responsibility" they feel to the other.

Honorable mention: Composite Sun/Venus in Taurus or Capricorn.

*Strong Venus-Pluto, Venus in the 8th in composite or synastry: Venus and Pluto together are one of the oldest love songs in astrology history. A Venus-Pluto conjunct in synastry/composite is one of the most holding aspects in my personal opinion. This person will feel like your person. Even if both parties aren't necessarily jealous or controlling in the day-to-day, letting go of this person will be nearly impossible as the bond developed is deep and stirring. Both parties will compare new partners to the intensity they felt from the prior relationship.

Sun Conj Venus/Moon, Venus in the 7th house, Venus-Asc, Venus-Juno (tight orb): What this boils down to is that it can be hard to let go of the ideal. When Sun conjuncts Venus or Moon it can feel like two puzzle pieces coming together. Sun Conjunct Venus in the composite means the two share a lot of mutual respect and interests and feel as though they're often on the same page. If these relationships run into bumps, some with this aspect have described it as though they have lost their other half.

Composite Sun in the 7th house: Quite like Venus in the 7th, the two feel as though they are stronger together than they are apart. This is known as an ideal placement for marriage which is unsurprising as the 7th house tangles a lot with partnerships.

*Moon/Venus in the 12th/8th house synastry/composite:

If you've read my other posts, you know I've mentioned how deeply this placement can be felt, mostly in the form of dreams. This is both an inner discontent and a binding aspect. The two will have an extremely hard time figuring the other person out which can cause a lot of inner discontent on where they stand, yet, paradoxically, have a hard time letting the other go. It can feel as though both parties are right on the cusp of figuring the other one out, and when the relationship ends it can feel like they never knew each other at all. Venus can fall in love with who they think the 12th person is, the illusion, without realizing it was never them to begin with, and if it was, they only fell in love with one part of the individual instead of the whole.

Honorable mention: Moon conjunct Ascendant (deeply emotional connection) and Venus conj Neptune

INNER DISCONTENT: What pulls us away from them?

Venus-Uranus aspects in the composite/synastry: Uranus by nature is known for its excitement and unpredictability. Venus will crave commitment that the Uranus person may be unable or unwilling to give. Love can be viewed as a threat, whether that is to personal freedom or other deep-seated issues in the individual's natal chart. Love can come on quick and feel fleeting in the same breath, therefore even if the couple has binding aspects, the relationship could end due to the natural instability this creates but continue to come back together for the energizing nature this aspect creates.

Honorable mention: Sun opposite/square Uranus

Moon Square/Opposition Saturn, Mars, Pluto, Uranus, Mercury in composite or synastry: The relationship could be overwhelmed by disagreements or farces. Moon square/opp Saturn puts a lot of chilliness into the relationship, where Moon yearns for deep bonding while Saturn pulls away. Moon square/opp Mars may indicate frequent bickering and fights. While Moon-Pluto can cause power struggles and the fight for control. Moon-Mercury shows a natural blockage in communication and an inability to express your emotional nature or logical nature at the right time, a war of the heart and the brain constantly.

Honorable mention: Mercury Square/Opp Mercury

Mars Square/Opposite Pluto/Saturn in composite/synastry:

Mars is a hot-blooded planet, while Pluto is dark and Saturn can be cold. The possible implications of a combination of these planets in a square/opposition can be a recipe for disaster. While Mars-Pluto can make for a very sexually energized relationship, the tendency for things to get out of hand is not only easy but likely. Mars and Pluto will both want the upper hand and will not have an easy time taking the high road just for the sake of peace. They will both fight their sides tirelessly and relentlessly. Mars and Saturn on the other hand will have issues relating to maturity and immaturity. Mars could grow tired of Saturn's righteous attitude, and Saturn may grow tired of Mars's childlike behavior.

Negatively aspected 2nd house in synastry/composite:

The 2nd house is largely one of the least mentioned houses in Astrology, along with the 6th house. The 2nd house deals a lot with material possessions and your values. When negatively aspected it can feel be felt through a strong clash of people who feel as though they are very different to the other. Opposite values and the way they handle money may be prominent in the relationship.

Honorable mention: Negatively aspected 6th house

Negatively aspected Chiron, in general in the composite/synastry: Chiron is desperately searching for healing, but when its negatively aspected in Astrology it can be a recipe for inviting more pain to the individual. Chiron is deeply wounded and sensitive, negative aspects to it shed light on their trauma.

Mars in the 12th house in the composite/synastry: Unlike Moon or Venus here who can weather the foggy storm of the 12th house a bit better, Mars can really struggle here as they try to assert themselves. The couple may have a tendency to push issues under the rug, dabble in secrets, and fear the unknown. Mars will actively engage the parts of the 12th house person they prefer to hide. The only saving grace for this is if the 12th house sign is also the rising sign as the individual will be more comfortable with the 12th house being lit up.

Disclaimer: A lot of aspects or positions can cause inner discontent or happiness with another individual, please look into the natal chart of both individuals. These may resonate with your situation, but they may not. You may be in a relationship with a lot of the "negative" aspects and it is going great and is not on and off, as always these aspects are neither the nail in the coffin nor the holy grail.

Blood magic involves the ritualistic use of blood as a potent symbol and conduit for connection. This doesn’t necessarily require blood to be removed from the body. In a few cultures, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and some indigenous practices blood is utilized from within the body as a means for healing, directing energy from the subtle body, and developing a more thorough mind-body connection.

The applications of blood magic span a spectrum of purposes, each rooted in the practitioner's intentions and the energetic resonance of blood itself. While practices vary widely across cultures and individual traditions, common themes emerge regarding the uses of blood magic. Applications such as warding, binding, divination, and energetic balancing.

I didn't initially plan to watch season 2, but after giving season 1 another try, the show grew on me. Season 2 didn't quite capture the magic of season 1, but it still had some strong moments. My favorite case was the Chinese opera one.

《雪迷宫》 The First Shot

In the late 1990s, police officer Zheng Bei and his squad go after the drugs that have overrun their northeastern city, only to find that the roots run much deeper than they thought. The highlight of this show is the charismatic characters and their deep bonds. It was slow to get going, but I was on the edge of my seat the last 1/3 of the show. Definitely one of the most memorable of 2024 for me!

After a mass shooting, the families of the victims and perpetrator cross paths as they struggle to adapt to their new realities. This show deals with extremely heavy topics and felt quite realistic in many ways, so it was a difficult watch, frankly. There was a happy ending, but thinking back, I mostly remember feeling frustration throughout.

《新生》 Regeneration

At the funeral of a man named Fei Ke, the guests realize everything they know about the deceased is a lie and attempt to unravel the truth. I heard a lot of people didn't like the last 3 episodes, but I enjoyed the entire show. It was very satisfying seeing all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Might even check out the original webnovel!

Two women, discontent with their current lives, grapple with misplaced jealousy and regrets over what could have been. Starring 许玮甯 Hsu Wei-ning and 林依晨 Lin Yi-chen, this series is quite different from what I typically watch. It's about the ordinary and mundane, but I found myself excited to sit down and watch each episode. I think everyone can find something to relate to.

《异人之下1》 I Am Nobody S1

After his late grandfather's body disappears, Zhang Chulan gets sucked into the world of yiren (outsiders) and must compete in a supernatural tournament, aided by the mysterious Feng Baobao. This show was a breath of fresh air and sooo hilarious, even if I didn't understand a lot of the lore about their powers. And season 2 just started airing!

《摩天大楼》 A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower*

Two police officers investigate the death of Zhong Meibao, a beautiful woman with a difficult past, only to find that her neighbors have secrets of their own. I'm so glad I finally watched this show after it had been on my list for so long. I felt it could have been a little tighter (maybe 13-14 episodes instead of 16), but overall it was a quality crime drama!

I'm a massive fan of the singer 薛之谦 Xue Zhiqian, and I actually first became a fan due to his sense of humor. So why did it take me so long to check out this comedy show that he's on?!? I'd never watched a show like this before, but I loved it and surprised my self with my ability to follow jokes in Chinese! Sadly I haven't had time to start season 7, which is currently airing.

After the death of his father and an argument with his mother, a boy bonds with Ah Jie, his father's boyfriend, all while a dispute over life insurance money plays out. I've actually watched film this twice, and I'm glad I did because I think I got a lot more out of it the second time! It's a sad premise, but there's ultimately a touching ending.

《鬼才之道》 Dead Talents Society

A young ghost has only a month to become a ghostly legend, or else she'll fade from existence. I didn't think this movie sounded that interesting or original at first, but I watched it on a whim and actually REALLY enjoyed it! It struck the perfect balance of hilarious and heartwarming. I strongly recommend it if you don't mind some gore.

《白日火焰》 Black Coal, Thin Ice

Former police officer Zhang Zili becomes entangled with Wu Zhizhen, a women who is linked to a series of murders that he's investigating. I watched this film after learning about its influence as part of the Dongbei renaissance. But it was honestly too grim for my liking. But if you like that kind of vibe, you might enjoy this.

Love in the Big City Part 2: Go Yeong and Umma

I was chased around, threatened, bullied and emotionally manipulated for months to write this piece, so @lurkingshan, this one's for you. *please release my family*

When I was reading the book, in Part 1, I remember being frustrated with Young as a narrator because of how standoffish he seemed with his descriptions of the people in his life (except Jaehee – Mi Ae in the show). I wanted to understand the emotional distance I felt in his words. And I got my answer in Part 2, where the relationship with his Umma was laid bare for us to see. The structure of this section was so smart, for it established the roots of his behavior in his childhood with Umma, and linked it to how it shaped the relationship he currently had with Hyung. Seeing it come to life on screen in the episodes this week was a treat to watch.

It becomes evident that Go Yeong’s relationship with his Umma is complicated as soon as we see them interact on screen. She is steadfastly religious, someone who believes that miracles can cure things that humans sometimes deem incurable, like cancer. We could easily infer from what we’ve seen of Go Yeong so far that she would not approve of his life.

Before I get into how her opinions and actions affect and influence Go Yeong, I wanna fully break down some of the objective facts we know about her:

She divorced her husband after he stepped out of their marriage and didn’t even have the courage to tell her about his infidelity

She is a single mother

She is an entrepreneur (in fact, we see her working from her bed in the hospital in multiple scenes)

She is religious and believes in the power of God

She is proud of her son

She loves her son

The last two points come with the biggest asterisks, because if she loves and feels pride for her son, how could she make him feel so alone? And now I shall try to explore this woman’s psyche to the best of my abilities, with a little bit of help from my personal experiences and therapy sessions I’ve paid money for over the years.

When we try to picture a homophobic parent, the image that our brain usually conjures up is often one-dimensional. (Note: This is NOT AN EXCUSE. I’m not trying to justify her actions. I am simply trying to understand why she did the things she did, by placing the context of the events of her life around them.) It is easier to process our emotions re: bad parents who hurt their children when we view their actions as simple. “They could’ve chosen not to do it and yet they did, so I hate them” is the conclusion that is the easiest to arrive at. That doesn’t make it untrue, but oftentimes, it is not the whole truth. Life is rarely, if ever, that simple, and our parents can truly love us while also rejecting fundamental parts of who we are, and never reconcile the two.

We see in the show the circumstances under which Yeom Eun Suk (Umma) finds out about her husband’s affair. She and little Go Yeong observe him from the sidelines, hidden, and see him smile like he had never done in all the time he had spent with them. We see Eun Suk feeling crushed by the implication that whatever love and happiness she thought she had had in her life with her husband was all potentially a farce. The fact that she chose to separate from him implies a couple of things: 1. She had strength and resourcefulness to provide for her son as a single mother in a restrictive patriarchal society like South Korea, and 2. She understood that staying in the unhappy marriage would only make her bitter and would affect her son more negatively than him growing up with a single parent.

She was brave enough to make those choices, and yet was still bound by her sense of propriety molded by society, and her faith. I’ve had a dynamic relationship with faith throughout my life, but I understood pretty quickly that questioning one’s faith is a particularly painful experience. Faith is supposed to be the solace one could turn to during trying times. When one is forced by circumstance to question their faith, it leaves them unmoored on the inside and further isolated on the outside. Eun Suk was already isolated to a certain degree by her divorce and her single motherhood. From what we learned in the book, there’s a history of cancer diagnoses in her family, so I would posit that she had been in Go Yeong’s shoes before, caring for her terminally ill parents in the past. Which is additional trauma from caregiving in her young adulthood that would’ve shaped her life. So I understand Eun Suk not questioning her faith when it was shaken.

She rebuilt her life and community by pursuing her faith—attending church, making friends who shared those values, and idolizing the Christian heteronormative lifestyle even after it failed her. She followed the rules dictated by her faith and community with utmost devotion, including building an entire business around heteronormative romance, in part because she had already transgressed by breaking up her own family and needed to prove she was not bucking that ideal or rejecting the church’s teachings with her choices. We see her take care of her appearance over and over when she is in the hospital after her first diagnosis and surgery, and it is yet another sign of her conformity and dedication to presenting a certain picture of her life. I understand why she would see her teenage son kissing a boy as a blemish on “a life deemed beautiful by God” and panic. I understand why she would think a psychiatric facility would help her son, and that it was her duty to try. (Note: once again, I am not justifying her actions, I am trying to understand them. Conversion therapy is deplorable and my heart goes out to everyone who has been subjected to it, including Go Yeong.) Eun Suk’s faith saved her by giving her purpose and community after her husband’s betrayal, but it also told her that her son, in his queerness, is fundamentally flawed. And like most people in this world, she chose not to rethink her entire life, and instead chose to believe that it is her duty to save her son from homosexuality and guide him to righteousness via the same path that saved her own life, ultimately traumatizing him. Hello, intergenerational trauma, my old friend!

@lurkingshan has already discussed the kdrama-fication of Part 2, with the increased intensity of Go Yeong’s romance with Hyung/Yeong Su. Expanding on that, I think the show’s depiction of Go Yeong’s relationship with his Umma rounded out the sharp edges of Young’s cynical tone from the book. We see her enjoy spending time with him. We see her joke around with him. We see her read her child with uncanny precision that mothers seem to have when she asked him “Why are you sulking like a child?”, when he was, in fact, sulking like a child. We see her observe and deduce that her son is probably seeing someone, and that someone is likely a man. Which then leads to her asking “Must I meet them?” when Go Yeong suggests a meeting with Yeong Su in the park. She runs from direct confrontation of her son’s sexuality, and yet diligently copies Bible verses, hoping for a miracle.

Eun Suk sees her son’s queerness as her own failure, and Go Yeong, in turn, sees his righteous anger towards his Umma, as his. She is so proud of him that she saves newspaper clippings of his achievements, but she is also ashamed that she couldn’t “save” him. She loves him within the confines of her faith. It’s not enough for Go Yeong, but it’s the best she can do; their relationship remains at an impossible impasse.

Yeong Su’s presence in this section is interesting because in addition to his primary role of serving as the broody, tortured creative who swept Go Yeong up in a whirlwind romance, he also serves as a parallel to Umma’s traits. When Yeong Su exclaims that “someone like [Go Yeong] couldn’t even imagine [his struggles]”, it rang eerily close to Umma telling her son “Don’t try too hard. Everyone must go sometimes”. The expression of disdain is the same, but in Yeong Su it reads hollow, as a pretentious assumption, while with Umma it registers as tired disappointment that Go Yeong would’ve surely felt as heavy as a boulder.

After finishing the book, I found myself going back to a particular paragraph:

...[I] was old enough to know that my mother did not exist solely to hinder my existence but was a person in her own right who had fought hard making her way through life. She just happened to be unlucky. In other words, the fact that our relationship had been so terrible was as natural as cancer or fungus or the rotation of our planet or sunspots. I knew this, but the feeling that she was the source of all my problems kept nagging at me. I kicked myself for thinking this about a dying person, someone who was only skin and bones at this point, but the thought refused to leave my mind.

It took me a long time to reach the acceptance Sang Young Park has put in words here. The fact that my trauma is an unfortunate byproduct of the life my parents had lived, and was not premeditated or fuelled by hate, was a hard and unfair pill to swallow. I want to grab Go Yeong and tell him that it is okay if he can’t ever forgive his Umma. Time will wash over his hurt and let him love her, even without the apology he deserves from his Umma. And I hope that, one day, he can learn to love the people in his life differently than the love he received from his mother.

I’m writing chapter 18, which like chapter 9 is a completely original interim chapter that covers scenes or spotlights from the summer, autumn, winter, and the beginning of spring before the marriage mart season.

Now, while writing this chapter, there was a transition in how some scenes were written… specifically regarding fantasies Benelope have.

Which leads to this IMPORTANT MESSAGE (please read to the end):

This was ALWAYS planned by @velvetcovered-brick and I. Why? Because we truly believe, as a canon rewrite, we had to progress the sexual nature of the show with Penelope’s own sexual progression. Her blossoming from a girl into a woman who is actually READY for sex. Yes, Benedict still had his own sexual experiences, but as you can see we wrote about those in vague terms since this is a Benelope story.

Now that we are getting into season 3, see chapter 18 as this transition chapter in maturity and spiciness level, along with Penelope’s readiness for emotional and sexual intimacy, along with Benedict’s readiness to commit and truly go after the woman he loves.

THAT BEING SAID, we know there are people who clicked on our story because it was in a comfortable T rating, and some people might not be comfortable with M rated sexual scenes. We DO NOT want to alienate any readers SO:
