Women in Art Talk @ Left Bank Leeds
This was a panel discussion chaired by Elspeth Mitchell which covered key female figures from history and how they have helped shape the environment that female arts practitioners work in today, while also giving women artists practicing today a platform to share their experiences as women in art.
The women on the panel included founder of Ladyz in Noyz Marlo De Lara (Marlo Eggplant), performance artist Gillian Dyson-Moss, pattern designer Hannah Edmunds, and painter Rachel Hinds.
Some interesting points raised included Gillian’s suggestion that the perpetual story of the artist is struggle, but the feminist strategy is to be resourceful. Rachael also suggested that the art world is an undemocratic system, there is a disparity between men and women at auction, and advised women artists to understand what they are up against.
These are a list of notes I took from the talk:
The Artists
Marlo de Lara (Marlo Eggplant)- film, performance and sound. Ladyz in Noyz creator, an international collective of female sound artists and experimental musicians. Colonial mentality, and what happens to people living in historical trauma.
Gillian Dyson- performance artist. Still Life- one of her performances. A response to an old mansion house. Collected together the unarchived archive of the building. She invited people to draw and write about the building.
Hannah Edmunds- Pattern designer. Works on commission.
Rachel Hinds- Painter. Fascinated with renaissance and the the artist genius of past. She copies elements of their work in hers today
“if I wish to define myself, I must first of all say, ”I am a woman”; on this truth must be based all further discussion” Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex
Linda Nicholin Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?
Old Mistresses by Griselda Pollock and Rozsika Parker
Leeds was the home of the first women’s photography centre, Pavillion. Founded in 1983 by graduates from the Department of Fine Art at the University of Leeds
Lubaina Himid- African artist, turner prize winner. One of the first artists involved in the Black Art movement of the 1980s. Was not represented by a gallery until recently. Do we need commercial representation?
Gillian
Womens stories- the non interesting gets lost
Perpetual story of the artist- struggling
Feminine strategy- to become resourceful
Female body is inescapable
Rachel
Disparity between men and women at auction
Undemocratic system. Always challenge the system but know what you’re up against
Revisionist History
Do plan A, ignore plan B
Marlo
There is an assumption that we aren't playing
Women in music and sound art felt silenced by bro mentality (hence Ladyz in Noyz)
Hannah
Textiles isn’t a “blokes thing”
If course titles changed, more men might get into it
?
Greetings cards are associated with emotional labour, and with women
Women are often lumped together, but we are different. Separation is normal
Making yourself into a brand- capitalist obsession
These notes I think are valuable to my research for my dissertation, titled A Legacy of Women’s Exclusion: The Dematerialisation of Feminist Art, which covered the historical exclusion of women in the art world. I think it will also be valuable to informing my practice, which often confronts this historical exclusion.

Hot Vintage TV Women's Bracket - List of the Ladies!
As promised below is a full list of all 130 women in the Hot Vintage TV Women's Tournament! Thank you to everyone who submitted their favs!
Just a brief bit of cleanup before the list. Thank you for all the submissions. If your submission didn't make it into the bracket or some of your propaganda isn't used know that I still appreciated the submission even if we weren't able to use it. Some things got cut for being outside the bounds of the tournament, some things got cut because the links were broken, etc. Anything I wasn't sure about got brought to family and friends for a second opinion. I did my best to keep as much in as possible but some things just ended up leaning too far outside of our criteria. If you notice some stuff that seems outside the criteria slip by it's because I tried to be very generous so as long as something wasn't obviously outside of our time period or rules I usually gave it a pass.
Anyway, I am working on the bracket as we speak and apologize in advance cause I don't think there's any way to make round 1 completely painless, as you'll see we have a pretty stacked line-up so I'm excited to see how things work out! Enjoy and see you all on Monday April 15th for round one of the Hot Vintage TV Women's Bracket!

Women’s Paths Research Group
Women’s Paths aims to bridge the gap between women’s issues in the community and feminist scholarship in the academy.
Focusing on local and global gender inequality, our seminar series for 2017/18 combines performances, film screenings and community-based activism with innovative academic scholarship that addresses issues affecting women today.
In light of Brexit, the election of Trump, refugee crises and rising global inequality, Women’s Paths believes it is now more important than ever for academics to remain in dialogue with communities.
Women’s Paths creates a space for these connections to spark creativity and inspire action.
This year, our seminar series is funded by the Arts, Humanities and Cultures Interdisciplinary Research Support Award and the Leeds for Life Foundation.
Our summer symposium is funded by the Leeds University School of Law, the Postcolonial Studies Association, and the British Sociological Association’s Migration, Diaspora and Transnationalism study group.
Current Directors: Amber Lascelles and Arththi Sathananthar
Co-organisers: Ope Adegbulu and Marlo De Lara
