Marlin Model 1894 in .44 Magnum
A nice classic as a starter for Jaune's journey into the way of the gun.
Jaune: This looks nice.
Ruby: This looks simple enough. The kick shouldn't be too bad, either.

Just found a company in CO that will convert .357mag Marlin 1894s to 10mm.
Including the gun, it'd be a $3200 project.
Ridiculous. I want one.

Freemark Abbey Winery, St. Helena (No. 1)
Freemark Abbey Winery, located between St. Helena and Calistoga in California's Napa Valley, traces its roots to 1886. Today, Freemark Abbey produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as very limited production wines, such as Viognier, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Depending on conditions, the winery sometimes makes a late harvest Riesling known as "Edelwein Gold".
The winery was first built by Josephine Marlin Tychson, one of the first women to build and operate a winery in the state. The winery was originally named Tychson Cellars and it produced Zinfandel, Riesling, and "Burgundy". Josephine Tychson sold the winery to her foreman Nils Larsen in 1894. Larson in turn leased the property to Antonio Forni and later sold it to him in 1898. Forni renamed the winery Lombarda Cellars after his birthplace; Lombarda Italy. He concentrated his efforts on making Chianti and other Italian style wines which he marketed to the numerous Italians that had moved toBarre, Vermont, the site of America's largest marble and granite quarries. Forni was forced to cease operations when Prohibition began.

Henry Big Boy All Weather .44 Magnum
Lever guns have been in my family longer than I’ve been on this earth. My father was a huge fan of lever rifles and especially Marlin lever guns. The lever guns were always utilitarian in nature. Whether used to hunt, plink or defense…the lever gun fit the need almost perfectly in each scenario. Growing up, I remember the different lever guns my father owned. He had a .22 magnum Marlin, an 1894 saddle ring Marlin in .44 magnum, a Winchester .30-30 and also a Marlin 39A Mountie. We plinked and hunted small game with the rimfire variety and hunted with the big cartridges like the .44 magnum and .30-30. After my dad passed away in 2017, I inherited the Marlin .44 Magnum and the Marlin 39A. For many years I’ve had the draw to pick up another lever action rifle. I truly wanted a foundation or a blank canvas for a modern, let’s say tactical lever gun variety. Of course Henry has their X Model which already comes well equipped, but I much prefer to make changes myself…to make it my own.
So after a couple of years of back and forth on which rifle to get, I was leaning towards a Big Boy model. Caliber I also wasn’t as sure. I knew that I preferred something other than .45 Long Colt and .30-30, so that left .44magnum and .357Magnum. Recently Brownells got a Henry All-Weather .44 Magnum Big Boy in stock. Even though the barrel is longer than I wanted at 20 inches, this would work perfectly for my intentions. I sat on it for a few days and was shocked when I saw it was still in stock. In the past I’ve noticed the all-weather models sell out relatively fast so I went ahead and purchased it. A few days later it showed up at my FFL. Henry rifles come in a basic cardboard box, nothing fancy. The All-Weather variety has a chromed finish to resist corrosion. They look absolutely gorgeous! The wood furniture they come with is black with wood grain, but a very smooth finish. Truly looks like fine furniture and well worth the cost.
Plans for this Henry All-Weather Big Boy lever gun? Tactical lever guns have been gaining quite a bit of popularity over the years and for good reason. Just ask one of my favorite lever gun experts, Pat RMG. I’ve shot a couple of his tactical lever guns last year at an event and was pretty much determined to have one of my own, but just not sure which until the Henry Big Boy All Weather in .44 magnum. My ultimate goal is to thread the barrel for suppressor use, change out the hand guard for a railed hand guard for accessories. I’m undecided on which optic to use, but I’m leaning towards the Brownells MPO 1-6 Donut optic. Really excited at learning this new lever action rifle from Henry. I even decided to go ahead and purchase the needed components to start reloading .44 magnum/.44 Special cartridges. So be on the look out…I hope to start installing the necessary tactical upgrades shortly.

What's your favorite rifle for home defense?
Honestly a rifle would ALWAYS be my absolute LEAST favorite for home defense, unless of course it comes down to barricading myself I side and having to fight off boards, then I'd honestly rather have my marlin 1894. Now, if you really want to talk home defense, let's look at firearms that are actually MUCH better at the job than a rifle.... Like a shortened mossburg 500 12 gauge, or a good solid S&W SD9 VE. Reliability and maneuverability. (And FAMILIARITY... If you aren't familiar with your firearm, then you have no business trying to use it in an emergency.

From the Back of the Safe…
My Dad who passed away back in 2017 was very fond of lever rifles. I remember as a boy growing up in the North part of Florida, not by the coast where there’s beaches and palm trees, but rather inland in a rural farming county, Suwannee county. My Dad always had a number of lever action rifles. Most of them were rimfire, either .22 long rifle or .22 magnum, but he also had one in .30-30 Winchester that he got from my uncle as well as a Marlin .44 magnum. Lever guns for the most part seemed to fit the bill for squirrel and rabbit hunting as well as hunting white tailed deer.
One of the lever action rifles my Dad owned, although purchased after I left home, was an old Marlin 39A Mountie. That particular rifle, with a cheap Tasco scope mounted up top was the dedicated squirrel rifle any time I came to visit. My parents used to have a Jack Russel Terrier and boy did she love finding which tree the squirrels were held up at. Knowing fully well that if she did this, I would take a shot at that squirrel. If successful, that squirrel would fall to the ground and she’d snatch it up and run off with it not to be seen for at least a half an hour. She sure was a smart dog.
The last time I saw my father, he gave his 1894 Marlin in .44 Magnum to my wife. She had borrowed it fairly recently to hunt pig and took a liking to it. We were talking about picking up a lever gun for her and he said to just take it home with her and keep it. Little did we know that would be the last time we saw my dad as he passed away a month after from a sudden heart attack. After he passed away, my siblings and mom thought that his Marlin 39A Mountie should stay paired up with Dad’s Marlin 1894 .44 Magnum rifle, so my wife and I also took it home with us.
Both of those rifles have been mostly sitting in the back of the safe. The Marlin .44 Magnum rifle was having some issues jamming, so I replaced the loading gate and cartridge carrier. Luckily at the time, Brownells had these parts available. That old Marlin 1894 was now smooth as butter after a trip to the range. The Marlin 39A Mountie hadn’t been shot since around the time my Dad passed. Recently around my Dad’s birthday…he would’ve been 69 years old, I took that old Marlin 39A Mountie out of the safe so it could see some sun. Shot some steel targets at about 25 yards… that little rimfire still has it even though the scope is in desperate need of replacement. I’m hoping to find a classic looking, but modern scope over at Brownells soon to replace it with. I sure missed shooting that little rifle and of course miss my Dad. Always great to handle something like that to remember him by. He sure loved his lever rifles.
