Mark Watson - Die Stadt im Nichts

Als Tims Werbeagentur den Job ergattert, ist die Freude groß. Für die in Dubai ansässige Hilfsorganisation WorldWise von Jo und Christian Roper sollen sie einen Spot entwickeln, der die Menschen zum Spenden animiert. Da sein Chef ausfällt, muss Tim die Dreharbeiten vor Ort begleiten. Dubai - reiche Stadt, in der alles möglich scheint. Doch bald schon muss Tim erkennen, dass nicht nur in der Zusammensetzung des Teams, sondern auch in der Kunstwelt Dubais nur der Schein zählt. Als ein Teammitglied tot aufgefunden wird, wird die anfangs überschwängliche Freude von zunehmender Angst abgelöst. Mark Watsons kurzer Roman nutzt das Format, um sich völlig auf zwei Aspekte zu fokussieren: die Kunstwelt Dubais und die ebenso künstliche Welt der Fernseh- und Werbebranche. Zwar ist der Protagonist selbst Teil letzterer, aber als unbedeutendes, kleines Licht ohne internationale Erfahrung fungiert er als der Außenseiter, der die Dinge mit einem gewissen Abstand betrachten und hinterfragen kann.

 Besonders fasziniert ihn natürlich zunächst Dubai, wenn er auch recht schnell realisiert, welchem Schein er da erliegt:

 Ein solcher Reichtum lag fernab der Welt, in der Tim zu Hause war, und es war wahrscheinlich vulgär, sich auch nur auf die touristisch-oberflächliche Weise davon faszinieren zu lassen, wie er es gerade tat. (...) Ihm wurde bewusst, dass er in der Tat fast nichts über Dubai wusste außer ein paar Fakten, die ein attraktives Bild für Touristen ergaben. Er war in die Stadt geflogen, als würde er einen Freizeitpark besuchen. Es wurde einem leicht gemacht, keine Fragen über Dubai zu stellen – das machte zum Teil seinen Reiz aus.

 Das Disneyland für Erwachsene, in dem jeder Wunsch, der noch gar nicht gedacht wurde, bereits erfüllt ist und das nur von und für den Glitzerschein lebt. Vor allem für die ausländischen Touristen, denn für die Einheimischen oder gar das importierte Billiglohnpersonal fällt hierbei kaum was ab. Sklavenarbeit wäre vermutlich der adäquateste aller Begriffe. Die Begegnungen mit dem Hotelpersonal wirken absurd-skurril, aber man glaubt zweifelsohne, dass dies in der Realität genau auf diese Weise ablaufen könnte.

 Auch die Werbebranche funktioniert auf ähnliche Weise und es dauert, bis Tim hinter die Fassade blicken kann und erkennt, worauf er sich tatsächlich eingelassen hat. Hinter den tollen Lebensläufen mit unzähligen glamourösen Auslandsjobs stecken traurige und sehr oberflächliche Figuren, die in ihrer eigenen kleinen Welt leben und nur durch die permanente gegenseitige Bestätigung am Leben erhalten werden.

 Gegen Ende verliert das Buch leider deutlich an Reiz. Der Autor sah sich genötigt, den Mordfall noch aufzuklären, was aber irgendwie nicht vorherigen Geschichte passte, sondern wie ein eigenständiges Anhängsel wirkte, das zwar inhaltliche Fragen klärte, aber dennoch unpassend und eher wie im Eilverfahren drangeklatscht wirkte. Tatsächlich hätte für mich die Mordfrage offen bleiben können, wenn dafür ein passender Schluss gefunden worden wäre.

I was immediately drawn in with the premise of this novel - one man, deciding that he’s had enough, sends his entire phone contact list a text message... one that just so happens to be his final goodbye, before he turns his phone on airplane mode and boards a train. This book was quirky in the best kind of way. We saw into the lives of some of the people effected by the text message, and the way they banded together to support the main character, and themselves. It was touching and hilarious, and evoked all the feels. The writing style was fun and quick paced, which made it a quick and easy read!
