yeah, i did see it, i saw it in theaters yesterday! i went with my mum and we had such a good time!

as for if it's good or not... oh boy. let me start with the disclaimer that i am the judgemental bitch of the universe, i can't turn it off, i am insufferable and i know this. also, i was squinting the whole time because i need new glasses. embarrassing.

SO. there are absolutely good things about it, i would say. there are several scenes that will be sticking like fucking glue in my brain for the indefinite future. the premise is hella cute and the acting was good overall (in my extremely uneducated opinion)... both meg ryan and david duchovny are so ruthlessly endearing it makes me want to actually scream, and together they cooked up a few really magical moments.

when dd's character got tears in his eyes talking about his daughter, i wanted to throw up. never let that man cry in front of me again, i can't take it!!!!!! and any time they spent laughing together was, like, electric to me. meg ryan has such a warmth to her that hasn't faded in her time away from filmmaking, and seeing her again just filled me with good happy feelings. (also, some parts of it gave me the good old au brain itch, which is always a sign i'm invested.)

however, i will also say that the movie is rather long and does occasionally feel long. mostly because the writing isn't, like, spectacular. not bad, just not quite as glittering as i would want for a film with only two actors in it. i don't want to get into the writing too much, because then i will start going on forever, because like i said, i'm insufferable.

also. okay. this is probably such an annoying nitpick, but damn this movie reused a lot of b-roll. like, they recycled this one establishing shot (which reminded me of the shot of the arctic base in the x-files episode 'ice', by the way) what felt like fifteen times. which is a bummer, because they kind of used exterior shots like paragraph breaks. since, you know, there were no other characters to fall back on. that sometimes made the pacing feel weird. it did add to the kind of liminal, claustrophobic vibe of being stuck in an airport with your ex, though.

i read an interview with them about how they didn't have time or budget for doing loads of takes or reshoots, and i think that constraint was both a blessing and a curse. they got a lot of really good, organic moments that felt very alive that way! but there were also moments that didn't quite hit, moments that should have had more time in the editing bay or time to be worked out on set. i also seriously wish someone had punched up the writing a tiny bit more.

on the whole, i would say that it's pretty good. if you go in with hallmark movie expectations, you are sufficiently parasocially attached to the actors, or you just love romcoms, you will probably have an excellent time. if you want to see david duchovny hit a blunt and then choke, like me, you will have an especially excellent time. the characters were flawed and occasionally frustratingly out of touch (on purpose?? i don't know, i am simply too young and silly 😌), but they also had moments of depth and warmth and sincerity.

i liked it, in spite of my rabid need to critique everything on god's green earth. i will probably watch it again not on the big screen and see if i prefer it that way (i suspect i will).

also did i mention they get drunk and flirty. because they get drunk and flirty and it's soooooo damn cute.

hello! Do you remember who wrote a fic based on the parent trap but it was with two little boys named William and Sam ? It was multi chapters

You're probably thinking of The Parent Trap by @markwatneyandenesemble. Its summary: AU based on the 1998 film The Parent Trap, wherein Mulder and Scully get separated after the birth of their twin sons, for the safety of each of them. Eight years later, Mulder has landed in England, seeking treatment for Sam, his son, while Scully remains in the DC area with son, William. Unsure the threat has fully passed, but wanting to give their children a normal childhood, they unknowingly send their sons to the same summer camp, where they meet and attempt to solve the eight year old mystery of how they got separated, why they never knew about each other, and how to get their parents back together.

I had a vague memory of there being other stories being based on "The Parent Trap," so here are a few more even though they are probably not the ones you're looking for. I do not know if I have read these but am sharing them anyway because it is amusing for "The X-Files" to cross over with "The Parent Trap."

Fic Recommendations: DeadAlive

So I really like post-DeadAlive fics. Not because I’m a big resurrection story fan (Jesus / Osiris stans, no offense) but because I can’t get enough of angst, repressed feelings and baby daddy reveal drama. I am going to post a version of my very own later this week. Meanwhile, I read a lot of these, so I thought I would share some recs. Here are a few of my favorites.

Slow Returns - o666666  You just don’t know how often I reread this. I love it so, so much. This one puts the emphasis on Scully’s trauma, and it’s so angsty, and it’s so sweeeeeet. I tear up every time.

DeadAlive AU - @markwatneyandenesemble I always say I actually think this should probably be called Three Words Canon Divergence or something, but whatever it is, I love it. The premise is two specific changes to canon. When Mulder comes back from the dead: (1) he has memories only to 1996 and (2) Scully isn’t visibly pregnant yet.

Author Skuls seems to feel about about this subgenre like I do, because she seems to have written a lot of post-DeadAlive, and I’m not complaining. Here’s a little DeadAlive Skuls tasting trio:

the smaller odysseys - skuls (@ghostbustermelanieking)  An AU DeadAlive fic in which Doggett convinces Skinner to keep Mulder’s resurrection a secret from Scully for longer. This ends like awwwwwwwww.

ashes and dust - skuls (@ghostbustermelanieking)  A largely canon-compliant DeadAlive / Three Words deep dive.

inches between them - skuls (@ghostbustermelanieking)  Another Skuls fic on this subject, also exceptionally sweet.

Doctor, Copper, Sailer, Corpse - Scarlet Baldy This is a series of first person vignettes from Scully POV. Extremely angsty and a little painful, with a very self-destructive version of Mulder here, but ultimately a hopeful ending. 

Ray of Light - OnlyTheInevitable (@gaycrouton) Honest conversation, then hot pregnancy sex—a Three Words fic we can all get behind. Which I think is actually one of the suggested positions for pregnancy sex.

Words, Words, Words - Circe Invidiosa (@invidiosa ) I’m not much of a Doggett fan, but I love this fic about Doggett breaking things down for Mulder. This is subtly written and moving— a heartbreaking Mulder characterization, in my opinion. home run - kittenscully Another great “Doggett gets involved” fic. Also very moving. Apparently this is how I like my Doggett. The Laws of Coming and Going - Buckingham A gentle Mulder-centric fic focused on his good intentions and slow moves back towards connecting with Scully. Very in-character and sweet. Hour of Lead - DarlaBlack (@sigritandtheelves) This is an excellent read — but watch out for the bleak, tear-out-your-heart ending. It's only painful because it’s canon compliant, so warning: you have to remember what happens with Scully’s longed-for miracle baby in canon. Waaaaah. So much angst. Untitled - @wtfmulder I see you, you wildly touching little drabble. This is set between Three Words and Empedocles, and it’s meant to explain the seeming change in Mulder’s attitude, and why does this make me cry?

current fic: We're winding our way towards the end of Make You Feel My Love, but also there are 3 - count 'em - 3 MYFML AU's in the works. And i mean that. They are all three over 80 pages each.

next on my watchlist: I'm not watching stuff on most streaming apps because fuck those guys, but tomorrow is a new episode of Ghost Files on Youtube, and whatever the Dropout guys are doing this week.

current obsession: Nothing in particular currently. Still suffering the Midge x Lenny brainrot, but I'm not actively losing brains over anything in particular.
