In tech companies, universities and artist studios, machines work through and learn the history of mankind. In this silent, but radical restructuring of entire industries, the artist becomes a template of a future that is digitally assembled from a myriad of fragments of the past.

In the experimental film Hysteresis, Seidel’s analogue drawings and digital processing merge with the queer performance of Tsuki, whose movements improvise between Ballet, Butoh and Berlin club culture. In a fusion process, her image is recorded, fed back through Seidel’s devices and then projected onto her body. An expanding digital sphere beyond labels and identifications with gender, culminating in dehabitualised neural patterns and reconceived fabrics of intimacy beyond rational understanding. In a final step, the resulting sessions are edited and dissolved by machine-learning strategies into a constant flow of pulsating images and folded spatial configurations. The resulting Muybridgean silhouettes, baroque textures and bursting structures fluctuate between the second and third dimensions, unfolding free-floating gestures that unhinge the laws of nature. Meanwhile, delicate abrasions of the pictorial frame build bridges into contradictory concatenations of reality. The soundtrack by Oval (Markus Popp) incessantly corrodes this dense web of associations, threatening to dissolve the remaining fragile points of reference.

At a time when an overriding predictability is forced upon us all, the film celebrates the disruption of pattern recognition and the artistic corruption of results induced by artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning. With Hysteresis Seidel explores new grounds in his experimental practice and collaboration. Unveiling a frenetic, delicate and flamboyant visual language, that speaks to the hysteria and hysteresis in this historical moment. The artist wants to open a discourse about these unique modes of AI creation – with implications beyond the film and other media, to that singularity, where history collapses into a single point in the present.

Art Deal

“We are going to have to get comfortable with touching one another.” Marcus Pike looked up at the overview of their assignment, peering over at where Y/N was reading her own copy of the report.

“Wait, married couples touch each other?” Y/N faked a gasp and held her hand to her chest, giving him a scandalized look.

He had rolled his eyes, even as he was grinning and looked back down at the carefully constructed report. Her playful grin gave way to her nervously chewing on the bottom of her lip. Her eyes raked over her partner.

Marcus had been assigned to the Antiquities and Art division of the Washington DC office of the FBI six months prior. He had come from Texas with a determined attitude and a broken heart.

She couldn’t help but develop a thing for Marcus. Whoever had broken his heart was a fool. The kind and considerate man she worked with was also extremely attractive. While he had started out clean shaven, lately he had sported a bit of scruff that just added to the appeal of the well cut suits he wore.

She hoped that this didn’t end up embarrassing her or blowing up in her face.

They were Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Stargis, a couple that were highly interested in the Impressionist era paintings that had recently been rumored to be available. They were currently at a gathering of some of the most prolific art smugglers in the world. It was a weekend event, thrown at a summer estate in the Hamptons. Everyone staying at his invitation.

Marcus had a hand on her lower back, the warmth traveling across her bare skin. Her dress had no back, draped over her form. His own suit was elegant and fitted to him specifically for the mission. They had to look every inch of the wealthy couple they were pretending to be.

The ring she wore on her left hand was more than their combined salaries for the year. Marcus had grinned boyishly as he had presented her with the box, claiming he had thought she would like that one. She preferred emerald cut to pear cut diamond, but she had to admit that the setting was stunning.

Thomas Mueller, their host for the evening and the black market broker for the artwork approached them, three glasses of champagne in his hand. His eyes flashed with greed as he saw her hand reach for the pro-offered flute. Marcus took the other one and turned to Thomas.

“This is quite the party.” He observed, taking a small sip of the crisp champagne.

Y/N hummed her agreement and turned to Thomas. “Yes, it certainly is. Thank you for the invitation.”

Thomas watched the pair while taking a drink from his own flute. “Yes, well your escrow deposit cleared and the background check show that you weren’t cops.” He laughed at the comment.

Y/N and Marcus laughed with him. “But one thing wasn’t clear.” Thomas said, staring at Y/N intently. “Your wedding date was only two months ago, but Anthony here said you had been married for three years.”

Marcus’ fingers curled around her back, the information had been logged into the system incorrectly. A small detail that could cost them the bust, or even their lives if Thomas decided they were a threat.

Y/N looked up adoringly at Marcus. “Technically both are true, right honey?” She cooed at him.

His brown eyes looked down at her in awe. “Yes, baby.” He leaned down and bumped her nose with his before turning back to Thomas. “Why don’t you tell him the story, you love how everything worked out.”

She nodded and breathlessly laughed, bringing Thomas’ attention to her cleavage. “Well, three years ago, Anthony and I were married in Morocco, but someone-” Y/N nudged Marcus in the ribs lightly “didn’t take the marriage certificate to the consulate.”

“Baby, I was too busy being entranced by my bride.” Marcus gave Thomas a conspiratorial grin and a wink. “Would you tear yourself away from your honeymoon to file paperwork with boring government officials?”

Y/N blushed prettily as she swatted at Marcus’ chest. “Anyway, when we were revising our wills this year, our lawyer informed us that we were in fact not married. So we legally filed our certificate two months ago.”

Marcus squeezed her a bit closer. “Really it was just an excuse to take her away for another honeymoon.”

She knew that they were supposed to act like they were completely in love, given the story they had just given. But their cover story had said they were in Morocco three years prior, so it was the first thing she could think of. Marcus had sold it with the sly grin he had shot Thomas and that wink. Now they really needed to put his nagging thoughts to rest. She turned to her partner and stretched her neck out as she pushed up on her toes slightly.

She caught his slight intake of breath as she drew closer, reading his realization of her intent in his eyes as they flickered down to her lips. She tried to ignore the shiver that ran through her as his hand left her back to cup her jaw as he lowered his head and met her halfway for their kiss.

The first touch of their lips was like an introduction. But she didn’t think that Thomas could tell that it was the first time they had ever kissed. His thumb stroked her chin before pressing down on it slightly, opening her mouth as his tongue swept inside to mingle with hers. Y/N melted into him at the feeling of him mapping out her mouth, whimpering delightedly into his mouth.

An awkward cough broke them apart. Marcus bumped her nose with his again before turning back to Thomas with an apology. “Sorry, if you were kissing her, you’d get carried away too.”

Thomas looked over at Y/N’s flushed and dazed expression. “I’m sure I would. You’re a lucky man, Anthony.” He looked over her shoulder and saw another couple enter the room. “Excuse me, enjoy the rest of the evening and the auction will start tomorrow after brunch.”

They decided to retire for the evening, not wanting to press their luck by making their host suspicious. Marcus had kept his hand on her lower back, right above the swell of her ass as they ascended the stairs that led to the suite they had been given for the weekend.

She was going to apologize once they had entered the safety of the room. They had swept it earlier for bugs, and Y/N had a small frequency jammer concealed in the bottom of her portable jewelry safe.

Her plan went right out the window as soon as Marcus closed the door. She found herself pressed up against it as he looked down at her, his breathing a bit irregular as he reached for the lock. She heard the quiet snick of the latch as it sealed them into the luxurious room for the night.

“Y/N.” He whispered, a question buried in just the sound of her name. She watched as his eyes flickered down to her lip where she was chewing on it, his pupils growing a bit wider as his own teeth raked over his lip.

When she nodded he dove in, slanthing his mouth over hers in a combination of hunger and tenderness. Y/N moaned at the feel of his tongue against her again as his arms went around her. He poured himself into the kiss for long minutes, licking to her mouth and making her press into him.

“Marcus.” She panted quietly, mindful of the fact that someone could be passing by the door.

He pulled back, his own eyes glazed over as he tugged her away from the door and to the large bed that dominated the suite. “You want to stop?” He asked, taking a deep breath to try to compose himself.

She pulled her hand out of his to reach for the thin straps at her shoulders, letting them fall down her arms and allowing the dress to pool at her waist. He swallowed hard as he pulled his jacket off and tossed it over a chair. He started unbuttoning his shirt as his eyes drank in her naked breasts.

He groaned as she pushed the thin material of her dress over her hips and let it fall to her feet, leaving her in a scrap of lace that covered her hips and her high heels. She stepped out of the pool of silk and moved towards him.

Marcus started yanking his shirt out of his trousers and ripping the rest of the button open frantically. “Gorgeous.” He praised.

She didn’t even remember how they got to the bed. As soon as she reached him, they had clung to one another. In a passionate tangle of teeth, tongues, hands and legs they sprawled out on the pillowy mattress. Instead of immediately sliding inside her, Marcus paused, bumping against her nose again to get her attention.

“Yes, Marcus, yes.” She whispered.

Shortcuts & Delusions: Peak Trump Derangement Syndrome

With Rand Paul getting passed around cable news networks and social media platforms like a prison whore because he’s been giving speeches about Trump Derangement Syndrome, I feel like riding his coattails and shooting my mouth off about it as well.

On July 19, CNN.com ran “Outrage erupts over Trump-Putin ‘conversation’ about letting Russia interrogate ex-U.S. diplomat Michael McFaul.” This is the best example I’ve seen (though there have been so many to the point of media saturation it is probably impossible to qualify one as “best”) of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

“At this week’s summit in Helsinki, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed what President Trump described as an “incredible offer” — the Kremlin would give special counsel Robert S. Mueller III access to interviews with Russians who were indicted after they allegedly hacked Democrats in 2016. In return, Russia would be allowed to question certain U.S. officials it suspects of interfering in Russian affairs.

One of those U.S. officials is a former U.S. ambassador to Moscow, Michael McFaul, a nemesis of the Kremlin because of his criticisms of Russia’s human rights record.

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to rule out the Kremlin’s request to question McFaul and other Americans. Asked during the daily press briefing whether Trump is open to the idea of having McFaul questioned by Russia, Sanders said President Trump is “going to meet with his team” to discuss the offer…

The willingness of the White House to contemplate handing over a former U.S. ambassador for interrogation by the Kremlin drew ire and astonishment from current and former U.S. officials. Such a proposition is unheard of. So is the notion that the president may think he has the legal authority to turn anyone over to a foreign power on his own…”

The rest of the article is more or less comprised of tweets by Trump’s detractors condemning the possibility of such an act by his administration.

I can guarantee that if Sanders/Trump said they would never agree to this deal, everyone would piss and moan that it’s proof Trump is trying to obstruct justice/Mueller’s investigation because it would mean he wouldn’t get to interrogate the 12 Russian hackers he indicted.

The people freaking out quoted in the story make it seem as though American agents will kick in McFaul’s door, cover his head with a blackout balaclava, shove him onto a military transport plane and send him to a black site in Siberia for Russia to waterboard him.

It doesn’t have to be like that: you can have American investigators travel to Russia to question the 12 Russian hackers Mueller indicted, under the supervision of Russian officials, and vice versa for Russian investigators to travel here to question McFaul under the supervision of American officials. But because Trump and Sanders said they were looking into the possibility of doing this, of cooperation between America and Russia to perform a mutually beneficial act, Trump haters say it’s evil incarnate. Don’t those with Trump Derangement Syndrome want Mueller to have a more thorough investigation of Russian/Trump collusion in the 2016 election?

The headline itself is proof that people who oppose the possibility of this questioning just suffer from TDS.

“Outrage erupts over Trump-Putin ‘conversation…'” Outrage over floating the idea of doing this, not even the event taking place.

Those with TDS are incapable of playing the long game; they can only lose their minds at anything and everything Trump says or does. They are compelled to go against their own best interests and goals just so that they can appear to oppose Trump.

And that’s the way it is, as far as you know.
