The fashion designer Mary Quant had perfected key aspects of 1960s British pop culture long before midnight chimed on the last day of 1959. The Chelsea girl and her try-anything attitude, her short, narrow garments casually bought from a Kings Road boutique – Quant had been working on these since the mid-50s. It took the zeitgeist until at least 1963 to catch on, let alone catch up.
Quant, who has died aged 93, opened her first Kings Road shop, Bazaar, in 1955, the year after Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel ended her postwar hiatus and reopened her Paris salon. They shared a similar ambition: to clothe young, independent women unsuited to fashion dominated by Christian Dior’s 1947 New Look and the work of the grand couturiers. Quant and Chanel designed their clothes to allow new physical and mental freedoms; Quant (unlike Chanel) was also in favour of fun, in reaction to her own teen years under postwar austerity.
Life then had been rationed, begrudged; almost the only place where the young could create their own excitement was at art college, with the Chelsea Arts Ball an annual chance for frivolity. At that ball a teenaged Quant, clad chiefly in balloons, hooked up with a fellow Goldsmiths’ College student, Alexander Plunket Greene, who swanned around long-haired in his mother’s silk pyjama top, trumpet in one hand and film script in the other.
“Life … began for me when I first saw Plunket,” she wrote in her 1966 autobiography Quant By Quant. He was short on ready cash, with an income of “four bob a day,” he recalled, “if one bought cigarettes one couldn’t go the cinema too”, but posh and sexually sophisticated. “Alexander had no use for straightforward sex at all,” Quant said, and he also was consistently unfaithful.
He came from a family said to be Evelyn Waugh’s model for the Flytes in Brideshead Revisited and was at art college crossing social classes. She, born in Blackheath, south-east London, had been persuaded by her parents, Jack and Mildred, both schoolteachers, to study art rather than fashion on leaving Blackheath high school.
After Goldsmiths’, she worked as a trainee assistant at the Mayfair milliner Erik. Quant picked up pins with a magnet and counted out the ration of one chocolate biscuit a day for the assistants, who were so poorly paid that, as Cecil Beaton exaggerated, “there were weeks when only an aspirin touched Mary’s lips and, but for the Jamaicans in nearby Claridge’s kitchens handing over their refuse bins, she would have starved”.
The creation of a hat was Quant’s practical introduction to fashion, and the sculptural moulding that quickly shapes millinery influenced her approach to clothes. She had reservations about “spending three days making one hat which would be worn for one afternoon by a grumpy, spoiled middle-class woman”, learned dress-pattern-cutting at night school, to put outfits together for herself, and briefly worked for the Butterick pattern company.
Plunket’s poverty ended on his 21st birthday when he inherited £5,000; advised by the entrepreneur Archie McNair, who became Quant’s financial brain thereafter, he took a mortgage on a property on the corner of Markham Street and Kings Road, Chelsea.
He wanted to open a nightclub in its basement, but could not get an alcohol licence, so that level became Alexander’s Restaurant, a bistro influenced by his friend Terence Conran and the recipes of Elizabeth David. Plunket told McNair that his girl was good at clothes, and Quant set up Bazaar on the ground floor.
Bazaar acted in lieu of the desired club, with wine or scotch under the counter and girls shedding their garments on the floor, attracting anti-establishment former art-school characters who had gone into photography and journalism. It was hardly a shop – the preferred word was boutique anyway – since the couple never understood business. Incoming bills were piled up and those at the top were paid – Conran said you could not open the front door for writs. They were part of the new bohemian Chelsea set and their stories became SW3 legend.
Quant bought fabric from Harrods at retail prices on a Plunket family account, and had to sell each batch of clothes before she could buy more; when she ran out of stock, she simply shut up shop and started sewing. When she asked manufacturers to make for her, few would, since her ever-skimpier, shorter shapes did not promise big enough profit margins.
Besides, Bazaar might be closed for weeks with a “gone fishing” sign placed in the window while Quant and Plunket went on holiday. They wanted a wider life, flying off in chartered planes to gamble in Le Touquet: because of the era’s currency restrictions, Quant smuggled out in her knickers the cash to buy a French home. They ran an illegal chemin-de-fer game in the Quant delivery van parked in a different Chelsea street each Thursday.
By the late 50s Quant had synthesised her Chelsea girl look from elements of left bank kooky beatnik and practical details of American sportswear, plus her preference for vulgarity over good taste. Then she began supplementing it with memories of her ideal – a girl of about eight glimpsed during a childhood dancing class, who had a Dutch doll haircut and wore a dark skinny knit, very short pleated skirt, white socks and black patent shoes that focused on the boot button of their ankle strap. Quant made similar clothes the basis of the dolly-bird look of the 60s.
In retrospect, this sexualised projection of a very young girl feels disturbing. Dolly-birds skipped, and knocked their knees, and pointed their toes in what Quant called “the wet-knicker pose”. Stocking-tops and suspenders were slowly replaced by patterned or coloured tights, and Quant developed stretchy undergarments no heavier than those tights.
Quant’s own hairdresser, Vidal Sassoon, cut geometric variants of the bob. The whole ensemble pointed in one direction. “The crotch is the most natural erogenous zone,” said Quant, directing her models in their Banlon, Bri-nylon and PVC mini shifts to prance for maximum pelvic thrust, and claiming that her husband once cut her own green-dyed pubic hair into a heart shape. Angry bowler-hatted men beat with fists and umbrellas on Bazaar’s window, Quant recalled: “It got to them in some way, what I was doing.”
Being a dolly-bird was just about affordable on teen pay. Quant went wholesale in 1961, and two years later launched mass-market fashions under the name Ginger Group – ginger, prune and grape being the previously non-fashion colours that she favoured. She also signed on as an adviser with the US retailer JC Penney: from then on she could afford to hop on big jet planes to distant destinations at whim, as she had once done buses on Kings Road; her personal transport was a black Mini car with a black leather interior.
But she was never comfortable with large-scale clothes production and soon realised that the real money lay in franchising household goods such as bedding, and, even more, in designing faces.
Mary Quant cosmetics arrived in 1966 and were more original than her clothes. Cosmetic containers had traditionally been designed as ornaments for dressing tables, with lipsticks and compacts based on 18th-century boudoir trinkets. Quant observed that professional models painted their faces like canvases with brushes and theatrical grease sticks, and as an art student she had worn the contents of her watercolour paint tubes. She commercialised these ideas, and the daisy logo that was always the doodled focal point of her dress sketches then appeared on makeup packaging – yellow tins of crayons, and simplified bottles, sold not from store counters but from “pods” that might have been moon landing capsules.
Skin cream was sold with matching vitamin pills. Bazaar closed in 1969, by which time 7 million women worldwide had Quant’s label in their wardrobe.
Quant cosmetics also dwindled away in the 70s but were revived under licence in Japan in 1984, and re-exported to the west in the 90s. Japan was Quant’s most logical market, for young women there have cultural sanction to present themselves as prepubescent – pretending to be very young is seen as liberating, which appealed to Quant, who said: “I grew up not wanting to grow up, growing up seemed so terrible, children were free and sane.”
She eventually resigned as director of the company, and lost control in 2000 of her name and her daisy, but stayed as consultant. She also began designing clothes for the New York store Henri Bendel, which realised her vintage work was being collected. Her approach was understood as being as dramatically simple as Chanel’s – “Only I had better legs than Chanel,” said Quant.
Her first retrospective exhibition, Mary Quant’s London, in 1973 at the Museum of London, had a 50s gloom room so visitors could appreciate the difference she had made, for which she was appointed OBE in 1966 – a very big deal at the time. She was made a dame in 2015, and a companion of honour this year.
When the V&A put on a lifetime retrospective show in 2019, it sourced exhibits radically by asking the public to loan Quant clothes they had kept. Many of those selected were displayed with old photographs of their owners wearing them, captioned with the outfit’s personal “story”. The exhibition drew huge crowds, with visitors talking to each other – a rare occurrence – about what it had been like to wear Quant fashion when it was new.
Although the Chelsea set regarded home as the place you went when there was nothing better to do, Quant loved her house in Grasse, Provence, and a retreat in Guildford, Surrey. There she gardened by torchlight when day faded, and installed a 60s Claes Oldenburg plastic statue commemorating dolly-bird knees.
The turbulent marriage of the Plunket Greenes, which had begun in 1957, ended with his death in 1990. Her later partner, Antony Rouse, died in 2014. Quant is survived by Orlando, the son from her marriage, and three grandchildren.

Back to purple hair! Washing hair in cold water during the winter is a whole new level of commitment... Remind me never to do this again in the winter 🤣🤣 It was also my first time going to a home salon and it was great! The process took 8 hours but I got to watch Love Hard on Netflix as well as like 20 episodes of New Girl. Also got to pet cats (even though I'm allergic). 🐱 Thank you so much @sarahfiorinihair for taking me in after my hairstylist left the country! ♥️ #purple #hairstyles #purplehair #pinkhair #pictureoftheday #photooftheday #fashion #ootd #hair #torontolife #blogger #pink #haircut #haircolor #haircolour #colour #haircare (at Markham, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYCWA3drCno/?utm_medium=tumblr

Ari Beats the Gatekeepers Part 1 or.. Ari Knew She Was Right So She Went Around Those In Her Way
Unfortunately, due to the lack of clear guidelines and training in all levels of government regarding policy on transgender name and gender changes.. transgender people need to be prepared, they need to know more than 'the supervisor,' they need to be polite, but confident and assertive, and maybe someday, the gate-keeping will stop for all of us. Well, we can dream!
Today was a difficult day filled with aggravation and disappointment.. however, today was also a wonderful day topped off with a victory over red tape and a would be gatekeeper.
If you have been following my story long enough, you may remember I legally changed my name and updated my driver's license and social security card information in May of 2016. Well, I was also in the midst of my divorce during that time. I wanted to apply for a passport since I never had one before. I filled out the paperwork over the summer and set it aside. I wanted to be able to apply with the divorce date filled in so the records were accurate. I decided, "no rush, I can wait until my divorce is final." I did not anticipate it taking 11 months for my divorce to be final. It was not contentious.. my ex and I handled ourselves in the best manner possible in my opinion. Still, due to all of the built-in delays (30 days to respond here, 30 days to respond there) and some rather inept lawyer-ing from her representation.. it took 11 months!
Guess when it was finally final? The irony.. it was Inauguration Day! That's right, I waited to send out my passport application due to that one little box not being able to show that I was legally divorced and in doing so, I am one of the transgender people now holding my breath to see if I sent it in time. In time for what, you ask? In time to be treated like a human being rather than be treated like a criminal by the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is now the white house.
Anyhow, one of my loved ones had to be admitted to the hospital on the 19th, just one day before my divorce was final.. this threw a new wrinkle in things as I took the needed time to care for my loved one. She had to be top priority. My passport application waited another two weeks for me. (My loved one is due to be released tomorrow - yay!!!)
Finally, yesterday I went into my local post office which is also an acceptance facility for passport applications. I asked the woman working the passport desk to take a new photo for me because the Walgreens employee made me look like a grandma in my first attempt at getting an acceptable picture. This woman had kind eyes and she was also very knowledgeable and patient. She went through all of the paperwork I brought... my physician's statement, my legal name change court order, my photocopy of my id.. then she paused..
"Is this the only birth certificate you have?" she asked. I said, "Yes, Why??" (as my heart began to sink)
"I'm sorry, but you need the long form and this is the short form. They will reject it immediately if your parent's names are not on the copy."
My heart sank as she told me I could get a copy the same day if I went to one of the Cook County Vital Records locations. I thanked her and decided I would just take the next day off (Friday) and take care of it. I double-checked the website when I got home and confirmed that the nice woman at the post office was correct. She had not given me bad information. I just missed that detail in my research.
I started Friday morning at the dentist getting my newly prepared crown put in place of the temporary crown I got 3 weeks ago. Once that was complete, I was off to the Vital Statistics room of the Bridgeview Illinois Court House. Of course this involves going through a TSA like security (only not as invasive). They had the lines split for men and women. I of course went through the women's line. They were nice enough and there were no issues. I found the right room, took a number and waited. I got called up to a station and told the woman that I needed a long form birth certificate. I showed her the short form one that I had (with my original birth name), my court order for my name change, and my current license. She started punching things into the computer then went to get a supervisor. Of course, I could already tell this was not going smoothly, but I hoped the supervisor knew the drill and knew that everything I brought was more than sufficient to prove who I was. NOPE! She told me that there was no way they could issue me MY birth certificate since my driver's license now stated a different name. She said that I could be anybody. I had given her a stamped and sealed COURT ORDER for the name change and she told me she could not help me.
I was so dumbfounded by the inept logic that I did not have the words to argue as she handed me a form to fill out and ship to Springfield Illinois so that I could have my birth certificate updated (a process that takes 4 to 6 weeks) BEFORE they could help me. Of course, as you can tell from the title of this post, I knew this supervisor was wrong. I decided then and there that I would visit each of the 5 other Cook County locations that day until I found a supervisor that knew the actual guidelines. Of course, because of the extended conversation about my gender and my name change with many people behind me waiting for their turn.. I had about 12 pairs of eyes looking quizzically at me when I turned around to leave. That's okay though, because I smiled at them all, knowing I was right and that this was not a true road block. I imagine I had a rather determined look on my face..
Tumblr media
It turns out, I only had to visit one more location! That's right, after another twenty minutes of driving, the helpful people at the nearby Markham, IL location sorted me out in a matter of minutes (well, after I waited in line for about 25 minutes). The clerk did ask for a supervisor, but she returned just to tell me that I should make sure to also send the right form to Springfield, IL so that my birth certificate would match my ID in the future. I promised her that I would. I paid for two copies of my birth certificate and thanked the woman.
I glided out of there, feeling like I had just won a major victory. I knew I had enough time to get to the post office and still get my passport application out that very same day. I drove straight there (an hour drive back by that point). It was the same woman who had to turn me away the day before. I said cheerfully, "Hello again! I have the correct long form birth certificate, although I had to go to two different locations to get it!" I explained what had happened to her and she basically shook her head and lamented that it was sad I had to go through all that. She carefully went through all of my documents and told me that everything looked good and that I was all set. I paid for expedited processing and my passport application is now on an airplane.
I went home, filled out the form I was given to change my birth certificate and went back to the post office to get that sent out along with another physician's letter and legal name change court order. This should not impact my passport application, because with expedited processing it should be finished by the time they get to my birth certificate change in Springfield (a slower process by all accounts). If my passport gets rejected because the birth certificate I sent has my old name and the system gets updated and shows my birth certificate has changed.. then resubmitting will be fine and less complicated because my birth certificate will show the correct gender and they will have no reason to question it or to deny it. What a tangled web.
By this point it was late in the afternoon and I was elated to have all of that done, but I also had several stress knots in my neck. I looked across the street and saw one of the salons that I frequent. I decided to get a blow out (they also give you complimentary neck and shoulder massages). The girl doing my hair did a great job and had some suggestions for a cut as well. I plan to go back on Wednesday for a cut, but went with just the blowout for today.
The point of writing all of this out is that I hope it is helpful for anyone else dealing with this. Even if you have only one county court house you can visit, perhaps going on a different day and getting a different clerk will get you different results. It is unfortunately a toss of the dice every time we as transgender people have to deal with changes to identification documents. Be in the know, do your research, know more than the supervisors, be prepared to politely but assertively stand up for what you know to be the correct process. You could also even suggest that they call another location to ask how they handle it if they are unsure.
I titled this post with "part 1," because I am fully aware, that there is a strong chance that either my passport application or birth certificate update request will be denied. As long as one of them comes back as expected, then I know the next attempt should be the last to get this all finalized. Of course, Mr. Drumpf could sign an executive order on Monday that calls all of this into question and both of my requests could be halted. If that happens I will immediately contact the lawyer who represented me for my divorce (she is also a transgender woman) and together we will take on the U.S. Government if we have to.
I will keep standing up for myself and keep going to any lengths to make sure I am not denied. You should do the same 😉
-Ari

My goal in sharing my transition is to represent transgender people in the positive light that we all deserve. Re-blogs are always okay if they are for this purpose, but if you are a fetish blog or fetish website then I want nothing to do with you and you do not have my permission to use my images.

Olympic Figure Skater Sasha Cohen’s Wedding Album!
Leave it to Olympic medalist, Sasha Cohen to take on the role of “bride” and incredible grace. She wed her love, Tom May oceanside on Cape Cod and the photos by Corinna Raznikov speak for themselves. “Tom and I both love the ocean. We wanted a non-denominational ceremony, something in nature,” Sasha said. “We were overlooking the water and got married just before sunset. It was absolutely lovely.” The Pink Polka Dot brought every detail to life and there’s more to see this way!

From The Pink Polka Dot… When Olympic silver medalist, Alexandra “Sasha” Cohen wed Thomas May, all they truly wanted was “… Something small and charming.” said Sasha Cohen. The New York-based couple chose Cape Cod because their busy schedules made the East Coast more sensible than a location near Cohen’s Southern California roots. They picked a small country club, The Wianno Club, near where May’s parents have a summer house. May’s sister also was married in Cape Cod, so she was able to give some guidance when it came to planning. The guest list totaled 140. There were five bridesmaids, including May’s two sisters, plus the maid of honor, Cohen’s sister, Natasha. Among friends from the skating world were gold medal winner, Evan Lysacek, Tiffany Stiegler Stahl (who was a bridesmaid, just as Cohen had been for her in her 2014 wedding), Jennifer Markham and Christie Baca.
Sasha’s color palette vision was steely silver, muted blues, whites and peaches. She wanted to incorporate vintage, romantic elements as well.
“Karen, our florist, did an amazing job with the arbor, candles and lanterns and rose petals along the aisle leading up to the altar. It was transformed into a vision.” The white and peach florals were absolutely beautiful and helped create a romantic feel in the ballroom. Textured cream linens, lots of candlelight and menu cards with floral accents completed the tables. Lush floral pieces lined the unique horseshoe shaped head table to create an intimate seating arrangement for the wedding party. The escort cards were tied to antique keys and displayed in beautiful boxes of moss for a vintage look. Cohen met May at a birthday party in 2014 through mutual friends in NYC. They got engaged in July 2015 in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
“We explored the beaches of the Cape during the day and then Tom proposed at sunset on a tiny private beach right before we went out to dinner,” Cohen said. They were married by a justice of the peace and said traditional vows. Natasha’s sister read a poem. Cohen’s Galia Lahav-designed dress was beaded with antique-style accents and a dramatic cutout on the back with a brass zipper. One part of the day Cohen will never forget is getting ready to walk down the aisle with her parents. “That was a moment I took for myself – I wanted to really remember how it felt before all the commotion started,” Cohen said. “Our first dance was very special, (as were) the speeches and closing the night with a line of sparklers.” The newlyweds did a traditional first dance to “Stand By Me,” a favorite of May’s.”The lyrics are inspiring and very fitting for a first dance,” Cohen said. “We both felt it was the right message. “We took dance classes before, which was a lot of fun,” she added. “It was slightly choreographed. Tom was nervous. He’s not used to performing in front of people, but it went really well. I have to say the lessons paid off.”
The newlyweds honeymooned in Sydney, Australia and Fiji.”

EXCERPT: “I cannot believe I picked chocolate mix,” said C.C., sounding astonished as they entered Tessa’s home, each of them carrying a handful of grocery bags. Tessa laughed, setting the bags on her kitchen counter. “Believe me, you’ll be surprised at all the changes your taste buds will have when you start baking.” “Really?” C.C. scoffed. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “Trust me—even wine tastes better,” Tessa replied, chuckling. She turned away from C.C., adding, “Maybe it’ll calm down your need for some action,” and very slowly, Tessa caught C.C. try to hide a smile. “Maybe it will,” C.C. admitted as boisterous laughter echoed from each of them. Shaking her head, C.C. looked at Tessa. “What have I created? I mean, I never really thought you’d go through with it when I suggested that you start baking, but now, it’s like you’ve made something of yourself, and I’m extremely proud of you.” “Thanks, Chelly! I’ve learned a lot, mainly about myself in the meantime, but it’s been quite a journey,” Tessa replied as she reached for the oven knob to preheat the oven. “Now, it’s time to get to work, and as always, let’s try not to set off the fire alarm.” This caused them to burst with more laughter before they each downed a bottle of water, then they dove into baking mode, with C.C. following Tessa’s instructions. After having each made a cake, which were in the oven, Tessa and C.C. sat down outside on Tessa’s backyard patio swing. “So, if you don’t mind me asking, what really is your relationship with Javier?” Tessa asked, diving right into it. “Because from the way you talked about him, it seemed like much more than a political candidate.” From out of the corner of her eye, she saw C.C. grin. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry—I’ve watched Scandal, so I don’t want to create drama if there isn’t any . . . but—” “We’re in love, Tessa,” C.C. whispered as she let out a breath like she’d been holding in a deep dark secret. They’re in love? Very slowly, like trying to coax a kitten, she stayed quiet, not wanting C.C. to hold anything back. As Tessa looked at C.C., she stared ahead of her. “It all started when he came into the salon, security was with him, of course. Well, come to find out, his regular hairdresser was on maternity leave, and he had an event that night. Just my luck, I was the only one between clients, so within minutes, I had a smock around him and was sprucing him up—not that he needed it by any means.” C.C. ran her hands through her hair, bashfully adding, “After I spun him around and took off his smock, he asked me to be his date and accompany him to an event that evening. Now, at first, I thought he was joking, but it wasn’t until one of his security guards handed me a phone number and instructed me to call it at seven o’clock that night with my address that I realized he was serious.” C.C. let out a small chuckle before she added, “I know, very American President, right?” Her comment about the mid-90s movie made Tessa let out a small giggle. “Anyway, since that night, he’s been sweeping me off my feet.” C.C. looked down at her unmanicured nails and began to pick at a cuticle. “There’s only one, I mean, two bad things about this whole thing.” “What are they?” Tessa asked after C.C.’s long pause. “Well, from that first night we caused quite a stir in the political world. I don’t think Javier thought about the repercussions, that having me as his date would cause such trouble for his campaign. This means that we can’t be seen together—not yet anyway. You see, he’s going through a high-profile divorce, and with the campaign, his closest adviser thinks it would do more harm than good and that being seen with a younger woman would look bad. Apparently, unless we’re engaged, it could cause a scandal or something.” She wiped the corner of her eyes and looked at Tessa. “Right now, the situation sucks, but when that day comes and we can finally be together—probably after the campaign—I’ll be shouting from the rooftops how much I love him.” A long moment passed, then Tessa quietly asked, “What’s the other thing?” “I’ve not been able to share any of this with my best friend,” C.C. replied as tears began falling from her eyes, and Tessa pulled her in for a tight hug.
