Between 2001 and 2005, 11 women were buried by an unknown person in an arroyo bank on Albuquerque’s West Mesa, in an underdeveloped area within the cities limits. Satellite images taken between 2003 and 2005 show tire marks and patches of disturbed soil in the area where the women were found. In 2006, development had disturbed the area and, soon after, the site was buried and platted for residential development. Due to the 2008 Housing Bubble collapse,  development on the west side had been stopped before housing could be built. After neighbors complained about flooding at the platted site (due to the burial of the natural arroyo), the developer built a retaining wall to channel storm water to a detention pond built in the area of the burial site, bringing bones to the surface.

On February 2, 2009, a woman walking a dog found a human bone on the West Mesa and reported it to the police. As a result of the police investigation, the bodies of the 11 women and a fetus were discovered. All of them were between the ages 15 and 32 years, most were involved in drugs and sex work. The victims were Jamie Barela, 15, Monica Candelaria, 22, Victoria Chavez, 26, Syllania Edwards, 15,  ( a runaway from Lawton, Oklahoma, the only victim from out of state and the only African American), Cinnamon Elks, 32, Doreen Marquez, 24, Virginia Cloven, 24, Julie Nieto, 24, Veronica Romero, 28, Evelyn Salazar, 27, and Michelle Valdez, 22. Michelle was four months pregnant at the time, explaining the fetus.

Police suspect that the bodies were all buried by the same person(s), and may be the work of a serial killer, who has been given the name “West Mesa Bone Collector”. Authorities also believe that the murders are closely linked to the annual state fair, which attracts large numbers of sex workers to the area in the fall. Initially, two men attracted police attention in connection with the murders. They were Fred Reynolds and Lorenzo Montoya. Reynolds was a pimp who knew one of the missing women and had photos of missing sex workers; he also died of natural causes in 2009. Lorenzo Montoya lived less than three miles from the burial site. In 2006 there were reportedly tire tracks leading from his trailer to the site. In December 2006, Montoya strangled a teenager at his trailer and then was shot to death by the teen’s boyfriend.

In August 2010, police searched several properties in Joplin, Missouri associated with a local photographer and businessman in connection with the West Mesa case. They confiscated “tens of thousands” of photos from the man, who reportedly used to visit the Albuquerque. In December 2010, serial killer Scott Lee Kimball stated that he was being investigated for the West Mesa murders, but he had always denied killing the women.

Another suspect is Joseph Blea. Blea has be dubbed the “Mid-School Rapist” for his activities in the 80’s. Police say he would often break into the homes of 13-15 year old girls who lived near McKinley Middle School in Albuquerque and rape them. In one case, there was a DNA sample but the rape test kit wasn’t rerun until 2010, linking Blea to the rape. Blea is also suspected of killing a sex worker; his DNA sample was located on the inner waistband and belt of a sex worker that had been found dead on Central Ave (a notorious street for sex work). In addition, a tree tag from a nursery was found in the area where the victims were found; it tracked back to a nursery that Blea once frequented. Blea, in the Mid-School rape case, was sentenced to 36 years in June 2015, at the age of 58.

No official suspects have ever been named in connection with the murders. A reward up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.

With the exception of an odd event here or there, the 2018 professional disc golf season is basically over. That went by quickly, didn’t it? The finale of this incredible year was the Disc Golf Pro Tour Championships in Jacksonville, Florida. In all, 44 players made the trip to this beautiful part of the country to compete for bragging rights and, of course, some cold hard cash.

The DGPT Championships utilizes a bracket system, and while some players were already guaranteed a spot to play in the finals, others had to spend several days on the course fighting for a chance to win. Just like at any other event, there was a little bit of drama, a lot of action, and a whole lot of coverage for fans to consume.

A Challenge For All

Held at the New World DGC, the stage was set with sunny weather and a course that’s demanding for even the most experienced players. A nice mix of par 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s, the terrain ranges from wooded areas that require precision to other spots that allow players to unleash their full power. Established in 2015, the New World DGC wasn’t the only challenging aspect of this weekend’s event.

Our sport’s top professionals all brought their A-games to the Championships, and as each round was completed, some hopes were crushed while others saw their own opening to move up the ranks. A look at the scores for each day highlights the fact that some players were able to battle through all four rounds and still come out on top while others only had one or two days of play to contend with.

So, Who Won?

Competition in the men’s open field was fierce as usual, and round one showed us that big arms had a distinct advantage. Chris Dickerson, Joel Freeman, and Anthony Barela all came out on top after Thursday, yet only Dickerson kept his cool the next day to maintain his spot in the lead. Both the semifinals and finals are where things got really interesting, as Ricky Wysocki, 2018 DGPT Points Champion Paul McBeth, Eagle McMahon, and others all stepped onto the course to give it one final hurrah for the year.

We don’t want to get into too much drama here, but let’s just say that the final round got very interesting toward the end. An out of bounds call for Nate Sexton could have potentially changed the fate of the event’s results, and if you’re really interested to see what went down, be sure to check out all of the action at the Disc Golf Pro Tour YouTube channel. Ultimately, Chris Dickerson took home the win over Sexton by one stroke and received a massive $7,500 check.

Let’s Hear It For The Ladies

While there were only 12 women competing for the Championship title, there was more energy and talent present than you often see at bigger events. Round one found current World Champion Paige Bjerkaas at the top of the leaderboards but only by a slim margin. While she was able to make it onto the final card on Sunday, too many bogeys and a 10 on hole 8A gave others room to advance.

In the end, it was DGPT Tour Points Champion Sarah Hokom who claimed first place just one stroke ahead of Catrina Allen. While we’re used to seeing Paige Pierce dominate at nearly every big event, she ended up missing the final cut by one stroke. Hokom’s victory marked her 10th win of this season.

Who is the West Mesa Bone Collector?

On February 2, 2009, a woman walking her dog discovered human remains in a remote location in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the following weeks, police eventually uncovered the remains of 11 victims and 1 fetus.

All 11 victims disappeared between 2003 and 2005. All were young, between the ages of 15 and 32. 10 of the victims had links to prostitution and drugs. Only one victim was African-American, the others Hispanic and Caucasian.

Because of the decomposition of the bodies, a cause of death could not be determined beyond “homicidal violence.” More than 6 years after the discovery of the mass grave, no arrests have been made.

Women linked to prostitution had been disappearing for years prior to the discovery of the mass grave.

In the summer of 2007, Maggie Shepard was a crime reporter for the city’s now-defunct afternoon paper, the Albuquerque Tribune. She went on a ride-along with the police vice unit and discovered officers had a list of 16 women all arrested for prostitution, and all missing. Shepard was astounded.

“There’s a list of people who are missing and I’ve never heard about this and what’s going on?,” she said recently.

Shepard says she didn’t get the feeling the police were thinking serial killer. And, she says, there wasn’t a sense of urgency or concern from the department.

“They weren’t trying to make it seem anything other than what it was, a list of missing prostitutes,” she said.

Some of the women reportedly knew each other from their time on the street. All of the victims have been linked to a stretch of Route 66 called East Central Avenue.

The families of the victims have complained that the police did nothing to help them find their missing loved ones. According to the police, some of the women were not reported missing until months after they disappeared, hampering the investigations.

“They saw them as ‘oh, just another prostitute dead,’” said Gloria Gonzalez, the aunt of Julie Nieto, one of the West Mesa victims.

What we know about the scene and the crimes

Because this is an ongoing investigation, not much information has been released to the public. But here’s what has been reported:

The victims were found in a 100-foot square area.

All of the victims were buried in shallow graves, varying from 8 to 18 inches.

No personal belongings or clothing were found with the victims

Construction activity prior to the discovery of the grave damaged some of the remains.

The mother of Jamie Barela said that an investigator told her that one of Jamie’s breasts had been cut off.

Michelle Valdez’s father reports that her body was buried in a plastic bag.

Suspects and theories

Families have reported phone calls from people over the years claiming to have information about their loved one’s death, often before the grave was discovered. Others report rumors circulating through the neighborhood. None of these has been substantiated.

One private investigator, George Walker, has received phone calls and emails from someone claiming to be the killer.

Theories abound due to the lack of information disclosed by the police. Some suspect gang involvement. One theory is that a dirty cop (or cops) is taking prostitutes to secluded locations to rape and murder them.

Police reportedly have several suspects and persons of interest. Two have stood out in reports about the murders.

Joseph R Blea: a convicted rapist sentenced to 36 years in prison for the 1988 rape of a 13-year-old girl. A landscaper, Blea used the area where the bodies were discovered as an illegal dumping ground for debris. A tag from a plant linked to Blea was reportedly found in one of the graves. His ex-wife also stated that he was often violent, had a hatred for prostitutes (though he apparently frequented them), and often brought home women’s clothing.

Lorenzo Montoya: known for violence against prostitutes, he was shot and killed by a pimp after strangling a teenage prostitute in 2006.

Whoever killed these 11 women may still be active. They may have another dumping ground for additional bodies in the Albuquerque area. They may have left the state or country. It has also been mentioned that these murders may be linked to the New Mexico State Fair, which attracts prostitutes to the area. Perhaps the killer is or was an annual visitor.

CLARK FREEPORT ZONE, Pampanga, Jan.8 (PIA) -- Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) has committed PhP1 billion for the night rating capabilities of several commercially operated airports in the country.   “TIEZA, which is the infrastructure arm of Department of Tourism (DOT), is currently working with Department of Transportation (DOTr) on the possibility of funding several airports in the country to equip them with night rating capabilities amounting to PhP1 billion. It is set for approval by the TIEZA board in their next board meeting,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat disclosed during the Institutionalized Leveraging of Infrastructure Program for Airport Development (iLIPAD) Conference 2020.   “Through your tireless efforts and dedication to develop the necessary infrastructure and improve and increase the modes of access of the Philippines, we are now beginning to reap the benefits. The nation’s tourism industry continues to soar, setting new records year after year achieving international recognition and helping countless Filipino families enjoy better lives along the way,” Romulo-Puyat told attendees composed of DOT and DOTr officials and stakeholders in the aviation industry.   As it happened during the last Holiday season for the first time ever, Philippine tourist arrivals have reached the 8 million visitor mark. “The increase in number of international arrivals means that tourism has now become an important driver of the Philippine economy,” the official furthered.

The West Mesa Murders refer to the remains of 11 women found buried in 2009 in the desert on the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. No suspects have been arrested and a serial killer is believed to be responsible. Between 2001 and 2005, 11 women were buried by an unknown assailant in an arroyo bank on Albuquerque's West Mesa, in an undeveloped area within city limits. Satellite imagery taken between 2003 and 2005 show tire marks and patches of disturbed soils in the area where the remains were recovered. By 2006, development had encroached on the area, and soon after, the site was disturbed, buried, and platted for residential development. Due to the 2008 Housing Bubble collapse, development on the west side halted before housing could be built at the burial site. After neighbors complained of flooding at the platted site (due to the burial of the natural arroyo), the developer built a retaining wall to channel storm water to a detention pond built in the approximate area of the burial site, inadvertently exposing bones to the surface. On February 2, 2009, a woman walking a dog found a human bone on the West Mesa, and reported it to police. As a result of the subsequent police investigation, authorities discovered the remains of 11 women and girls and a fetus buried in the area.
