Answering your tag on DBD comics !

Yesssss @edwinspaynes have you considered getting the Omni? :O (That’s what I have). I don’t have single issues of that run!

Watching the show is on my tbr, but having been a fan of the comics for a while i thought i’d share some lore about it! The artist- Bucky - is quite legendary in the DC / Marvel comics artworld. Mainly because due to his former team up with legendary comic writer Bill Willingham for the very very awarded run called ‘Fables’. Fables follows classic Grims’ fairy tale characters (Snow White, Big Bad Wolf, Cinderella, Prince Charming, Jack Frost, Red Riding Hood and more) in a modern Adult content NYC setting trying to survive a normal world as magical beings.

The Fables comic run, is a great rabbit hole to fall into (pun intended) but i won’t go on that tangent (unless asked), but Bucky’s Fables artwork kind of created a ‘trend’ or rendered a very unique type of artwork unseen in the comic book space before. His artwork is very, Fairybook, victorian-esuqe, classical marionette characters/storybook artwork but made rated r (gore, slasher, etc.) which is a fantastic way to subvert expectations when viewing it’s idyllic artwork. His clean lines and attention to facial expressions bring the characters' emotions to life, while his creative use of panel layouts adds to the storytelling, often incorporating elements that reflect the fairy tale origins of the characters.

In Dead Boy Detectives, his art carries a slightly more whimsical and eerie tone, fitting the supernatural and detective elements of the story. Buckingham's ability to create atmosphere and mood through his detailed backgrounds and imaginative character designs enhances the narrative, making his art an integral part of the storytelling experience in both series. So it is no suprise that this was carried on when he joined DBD comics with the same household frame of artwork. A noteable shame, is that in Fables he did a lot of margins artwork which we’re missing out on in DBD comics.

I love Bucky’s mariontte timeless artwork, and i think no matter your entry point into the fandom, it’s a great pocket to celebrate English Victorian meets hardy boys storytelling. Which i really wish we will get more of! Either continue the comics or the show for sure.

So yeah i hope you enjoyed listening to my morning rant! LOL!

I don't have the omnibus and don't plan to get it because I already have the two major runs in their books. I can send a picture later if you remind me! But yeah, I don't want to pay $100 for stories that I already own most of. So that's not going to happen, sadly.

This was really interesting! Thank you for sharing. I love the art style in the Toby Litt run as well, which is what you're showing me. It's definitely my favourite of the DBDA comic art styles. I love Edwin's little freckles in it, they're delightful.

what is mariontte's new story and how would he meet shadow lurker

He would be able to escape from hellance but couldn't get his brother but was in a coma for long time, durning rehabilitation he would meet him

jack, in his grief after 15x20 accidentally turns himself into a toddler & sends himself back to 2001, pre-canon era Dean who is alone on the road, no sammy, no john, just Dean and yea sure, a child just appeared in the shotgun seat while he was doing 90 on the interstate and that can't be natural but its still a kid so Dean just sort of immediately reverts to acting all parental because thats just what he does when theres a child (bc thats all he did in his own childhood cmon) so now hes got a 3-4 y/o child whos stubbornly referring to him as Pa and won't stop mentioning some guy Cas, talks about him and Sammy as if he knows them and wont let go of him. And he can't tell his Dad because he's afraid what John will do to the child, because it might look like a child but it also appeared out of nowhere so chances are high he'd turn it into some sort of learning experience for Dean where he berates him for trusting and what not but Jack's so small and tiny, and he cries when he first looks at Dean so what was he supposed to do??

Anyway Canon is changed _completely_ because Dean is a dad now (and yes, one time he tries to hand Jack off to a foster home, because he made a mistake and the guilt and fear and responsibility is too much, but the kid looks at him, and holds onto the edge of his jacket and Dean caves, picks him up, turns around and runs before they can even open the door)

John still dies, but this time Dean is not around, his health is not collateral in the crash, Sam doesn't take up hunting again, Dean *stops* hunting because he's grown so so so attached to Jack and he can't just leave him.

Cas eventually shows up bc, even though Jack has managed to make himself a regular human toddler, heaven has sort of understood that there's a child out of time and they wouldnt care except he feels like lucifer so Cas gets sent out, by chance and god do dean and cas hate each other because this angel wants to take Deans kid from him and no way is dean gonna let that happen. So they hate each other, but Cas keeps showing up, and Jack keeps crying about how Cas is still hangijg by the strings of heaven like a fucked up apathetic mariontte and he won't explain the details to Dean at first, but eventually he does. They try to get Cas to stay but it doesnt work.

Eventually, Jack tells Dean that they should just give up. (Hes maybe 9, 10 at this point), but Dean can't have that, so he traps Cas with holy oil and makes him stay. The weeks go by and no angel shows up to save Cas. Dean and Cas start to be more and more sympathetic to one another but Cas' inner conflict between faith and doubt makes him bolt at the first chance.

Approximately two months later, Jack doesn't return from the school Dean has him enrolled in, and Dean starts panicking. Can't find him anywhere, he threatens the secretary at school, asks Bobby for help, asks Sam for help, until eventually, in the evening he breaks down and prays.

Cas shows up, takes one look at Dean and vanishes again and Dean gets so so angry, but instead of breaking things around their house (because he has to be better for Jack, he has to be good, Jack will return, its not too late), he goes out to search the town and the woods around by himself.

When he comes home in the middle of the night he doesmt hesitate to pull his gun before even entering the house. Because he can hear and see the TV playing a cartoon in the living room, and there's no one home, so he shoulders open the door and finds. Jack. Asleep against Cas' shoulder, while Cas is confusedly staring at a Tom and Jerry ep.

IN A BALLROOM IN SEOUL, A MAN SHARPENS HIS ARROWS AND AIMS

the elites of sungkyunkwan are close-knit — there are no secrets, no strangers, there are always eyes on you, always someone willing to spill your deepest fears and desires. therefore it’s no surprise that changho found himself aware of insoo and his lackey; their loyalty reached the darkest alleyways and the edge of high society. but he had only begun to notice the trio that autumn afternoon on campus, now his degree to feelings for the trio varied. the thought of insoo made his tongue bitter, and his eyes darken, while hanui — with hanui some may mistake his attention for tenderness, but he would not describe it so.

but the third of the trio, he did not have many thoughts on. he did not sour his mood like their leader insoo, nor did he make his heart quicken like hanui, jeon doyun was...jeon doyun was inconsequential. hanui may have been his girlfriend, but changho knew her devotion to han insoo was stronger, at least that is what it seemed like.

that’s beside the point. as changho narrows his eyes to the other pledge, he did not understand why doyun and hanui broke up, nor did he really care before tonight, as he reaffirms jeon doyun is inconsequential. in contrast, his affection for hanui (whatever it was) did not amount to much outside the glances they stole from one another.

so why does his stomach twist? why are his feet carrying him towards doyun? why is he bothered that hanui is left alone? their relationship is none of his business. yet the curiosity does not leave him as he slips from his champagne flute, the lingering bile fills his throat, jeon doyun is inconsequential, repeats but he ignores it. 

perhaps changho’s been enchanted by some vengeful god, one that is pulling at his strings for amusement as he finds himself smiling as he approaches doyun. “ jeon doyun right?,” his free palm outreached towards the other, “crazy night, isn’t it ? i guess sophomore year won’t be as boring as last year was.” 

maybe jeon doyun is more significant than changho wants to admit.

lunar eclipse. occurring during his third year | @mariontte

in the summer before his third year, dongmin’s mother makes some passing remark that the son of her friend would be enrolling into skku in the fall. she’s wearing an excitable expression: lips curling around the brim of her glass, fingers curling tightly around the flute, lipstick stark red against the white of her teeth. her eyes are twinkling (maybe it’s the fact that she is two glasses deep into the wine bottle… or maybe it’s the feeling that she is excited about what’s to come…) and she’s looking at dongmin with an intensity in her eyes that he rarely sees. 

“it’d do you some good to finally introduce yourself to him,” his mother sighs, eyes trailing over to the painting on the wall. “wouldn’t it be nice if our sons could be friends as well?”

well, his mother has always been a little more simpleminded than his father. 

it’s a little refreshing, honestly, to be able to think of forming connections for reasons other than the society--

“you’ll point him in the best direction for pledging, right?”

ah, of course. maybe he spoke too soon.

and so, in the fall, word gets out around the elite circles that a certain jeon doyun is hosting a fall/winter show. it’s a grandiose entrance into skku, with the venue being just a few blocks away from campus, and doyun himself just finishing with move-in before the show is set to start. 

dongmin would be stupid to not take advantage of the glorious opportunity. 

he sits off to the side of the runway, watches the swirls of patterns and feels the thump of the music… he’s never been one to fully understand fashion, but he finds doyun’s work surprisingly palatable. he politely claps at the end of the show, stands up when doyun comes out to bow at the end, and then instantly sets off toward the backstage area. 

he holds up his skku press badge, says he’s some college kid just looking for a scoop on a fellow college kid, slipping through the security with hardly more than a few quick quips and maybe a couple hand shakes. it’s not too long before he’s sidling up to the Man of the Hour who seems a bit uncertain(? is that it..?) at his presence.

striding up, dongmin wears his glowing grin and lighthearted tone, hand already extending for a handshake.

“i’ve only heard of you through phone conversations,” dongmin beams. “pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, doyun.”
