Trying to figure out if Sean is Sean or not, and I just can't stop thinking about this bit. I do think Marion is the one thing Sean wouldn't be willing to give up for the creature. But, if he did fight, that doesn't mean he succeeded.

Sean: You're the love of my life and my best friend, I would do anything for you.
Marion: I want you to eat three meals a day and have a decent sleep schedule.
Sean: Absolutely not.

“We should get back to the house,” Marion eventually says. He walks up to him, and hands the baseball back.
Sean glances at him, and gives a half hearted shrug. He takes the ball and pockets it. “You ain’t that bored already, eh?”
Marion gives him a look that feels like he is looking through him, and his skin crawls.
“It’s… way too late to be out like this. Especially when we should be getting sleep.”
“The night is young, my friend.”
“I think I’ve gotten enough fresh air. You too.”
He’s reaching for him. Marion’s hand hovers over Sean’s shoulder. The touch is featherlight. Sean shoves his hands into his pockets.
His hand feels the ball within. “I think I gotta run for a bit. Adrenaline keeps coming back left and right.”
“Alright,” Marion says. He doesn’t move. “I’ll keep company.”
“Wouldn’t want to let me outta your sight?” Sean grins.
Marion grins as well, but his eyes are somber. “We both know it’s better not to be alone tonight.”

I just think you should always be really careful about who you tell that you can do that. I just think only the people here know. No one outside of Candela. That’s how it should stay.

Marion: Dandelions symbolize everything I want to be in life.
Sean: Fluffy and dead with a gust of wind?
Marion: Unapologetic. Hard to kill. Feral, filled with sunlight, bright, beautiful in a way that the conventional and controlling hate but cannot ever fully destroy. Stubborn. Happy. Bastardous. Friends with bees. Highly disapproving of lawns. Full of wishes that will be carried far after I die.
Jean: *not looking up from her book* Edible.

Watching Through My Fingers
Sean Finnerty / Marion Collodi - also on ao3 X
It hits Marion, one random night, how many times he’s ‘seen’ Sean die.
It’s about 3 am, and Marion still hasn’t gone to sleep. He listens intently to the sounds of Sean breathing and softly grunting or mumbling every so often. A smile breaks over Marion’s face as a piece of Sean’s hair tickles at his nose and he shifts subconsciously to move it away.
His gorgeous face, that’s blown apart or split from its body or left with dead eyes as Marion’s mind flashes with premonitions he’s seen about Sean. So, so many times. And always stopped by the sudden cry Marion makes at the thought of losing Sean, willing the future to change, to give Marion another day with him.
He remembers the first time it happened. Still haunted by that last look Sean gives him before a bullet shoots through the back of his head, ripping his face apart.
Marion has to blink away the image and focus on Sean’s face now, right in front of him.
He needs a shave, Marion thinks, and absentmindedly reaches out to stroke the stubble gracing Sean’s chin.
Sean stirs, and Marion pulls his hand back just slightly.
Sean’s eyes blink open slowly, and focus on Marion’s face. He smiles sleepily. “Hey…” he mumbles.
Marion can’t open his mouth to speak for a moment as the bullet threatens to show itself again. You stopped it, Marion reassures himself, remember?
“You think I can see things in my sleep?” Marion whispers, suddenly.
Sean’s eyes, ever so close to closing and allowing him to slumber once more, blink up again. “Hm?” he asks.
“Do you think I can see things in my sleep?” Marion repeats a bit louder.
Sean’s eyebrows furrow. “Fuck you talking about?”
“You know, my-,” Marion points to his head, “do you think it works when I’m sleeping?”
Sean braces himself on his arms and rubs his eyes to wake up a bit better. Then he looks intently at Marion.
Sometimes Marion thinks that, while he’s the one that gets the premonitions, Sean can see a lot more than Marion. Marion’s put in mind of that now as Sean’s eyebrows raise in understanding and his hand comes out to rub gently against Marion’s arm.
“What, like you’re gonna see an attacker or somethin?” Sean’s eyes search Marion’s face in the dark. “Hey, don’t worry, alright?” Sean soothes, “this place is hardly the worst joint we’ve slept in. At least the door locks, you know?”
Marion huffs, turning to look at the ceiling, or maybe just moving away from Sean’s gaze. “I just-.” He gets a sudden lump in his throat and is glad it’s dark in the room from how his eyes start to well up.
I can’t watch over him all the time,Marion thinks. He gets himself in the shit too damn often, what if I miss it?
The hand that rubbed his arm now slides down and grasps his hand.
“Get some rest, eh?” Sean says, reaching the hand up to press a kiss against the back of it. “Got another big day tomorrow.”
Another big day, full of life-threatening situations for Sean to throw himself into.
Marion lets some tears fall, not wanting to make an obvious move to wipe them away. But because of that, they’re probably visible when Marion turns to look at Sean.
“What if I miss it?” Marion speaks his mind suddenly, “What if-,” Marion’s throat catches and he averts his gaze, focusing on where their hands are intwined. “What if you pull another stupid, crazy, brilliant, trick,” Marion chuckles, and sees Sean mirroring his small smile in his periphery. “But then,” Marion’s mouth wavers against his will, “but then it goes fucking wrong and I can’t fucking catch it?”
Seans eyes widen slightly, his hand immediately making its way up to brush Marion’s tears away. “Hey, hey,” he says gently, “what’s up with you tonight?”
Marion sharply inhales. “I don’t know,” he shudders the breath out and turns himself away. “I don’t know.”
“No, don’t-.” Sean starts, then there’s silence.
Marion sniffs wetly and cringes to himself, hoping this can all be chalked up to him talking nonsense.
But an arm wraps around Marion’s waist and pulls him closer. And like always, he can’t find it in him to resist.
“You’re too sweet for your own good, darlin,” Sean mutters.
Marion scoffs, shaking his head but his chest lightens as Sean's smooth voice gets closer to his ear.
Sean’s head rests in the crook of Marions neck as he keeps talking softly. “I can take care of myself good enough, I work pretty well under pressure.”
Marion doesn’t say anything to that. He steadies his nervous hands on the arms wrapping around his waist.
After a minute or so, Sean sighs. “I’ll try not to be so stupid all the time, alright? I, uh,” Sean clears his throat as his voice starts breaking a bit. “I don’t wanna lose you either.”
Marion’s heart aches. He turns around in Sean’s arms, gripping the back of his neck tightly as he indulges in a long kiss which Sean eagerly reciprocates. Hands grab at waists as they both forgo any more talking for the moment.
When Marion feels Sean’s hands shaking as they press against his back and when he tastes the salt of Sean’s tears, he pulls back.
“Fuck, you got me crying and shit,” Sean mumbles, chuckling weakly and wiping at his face.
“Sorry,” Marion whispers, rubbing a hand around Sean’s shoulder.
“Nah, it’s just…” Sean stares for a second or so at Marion then presses their lips together once more. Sean’s hand brushes softly through Marion's hair and settles on the back of his neck before breaking apart and murmuring. “Let’s, uh, get some sleep, alright?”
“Yeah,” Marion says, sliding an arm over Sean’s chest as Sean leans back into the pillows.
Marion doesn’t know how long the two of them lay there, both pretending not to notice that the other one is still awake. But the last time he looks at Sean’s face, he sees him smiling back down at him. No bullets, no explosives, no daggers. Nothing threatening them here. And Marion smiles, his mind finally letting him drift off to sleep.
