Agatha: I really like this whole 'good guy, bad guy' thing you guys have going on. Althea: It's not an act, it's just that I'm mean and Marion isn't

So, there's a lot of books that you complain about being awful (most of which I haven't read), usually because of the interpretation of some character (or many characters).
Is the problem with most of these books:
1. That the character on question has been written as a bad person,
2. That the interpretation differs from the Vulgate Cycle,
3. or the specific combination of those two things?
Or have I completely misread this situation?
See the thing is, yes it has to do with interpretation of characters, but perhaps not as superficial as it sounds! While I do love the Vulgate and prefer a more nuanced Mordred, that’s not really the root of the issue. I want Mordred to topple Camelot. I don’t expect or want authors to follow the Vulgate exclusively, there’s plenty from Chrétien or SGATGK or Parzival or the Mabinogion I’d love to see incorporated and they often are! Yay!
The real answer is a complicated thing that can only be expressed through examples because citing “misogyny” or “racism” doesn’t convey the magnitude or severity of the problem. Medieval society was misogynistic and racist at times, I don’t think those things should go ignored in a retelling. It would cheapen the narrative to pretend Guinevere’s or Morgause’s situations weren’t brought about largely due to the patriarchal systems at play nor do I want to pretend everyone who met Palomides was race blind.
Here’s an exhaustive list of sourced examples to indicate what I’ve encountered that really turned my stomach in retellings…content warning for everything from animal abuse to rape to genocide. This is gonna be long….
Adding more/intentional incest.
Agravaine sexually attracted to his mother Morgause (The Once and Future King by T. H. White) or to his aunt Guinevere (Arthur Rex by Thomas Berger, The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf)
Gaheris sexually attracted to his mother Morgause (The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart)
Mordred sexually attracted to and raping his mother Morgause (Morgawse by Lavinia Collins)
Uther sexually attracted to his step-daughter Morgause (Igraine by Lavinia Collins)
Kay sexually involved with his uncle Lancelot (Guinevere and Morgan by Lavinia Collins)
Mordred sexually involved with his aunt Morgause (Guinevere Evermore by Sharan Newman)
Morgause attempting to seduce her teenage son Mordred (The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart)
Arthur marrying his sister Morgan (Bedivere by Wayne Wise)
A life-long sexual relationship between Arthur and his aunt Morgan (The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf)
Mordred and “auntie” Morgan having sex (Merlin and the Sword (1985))
Exceedingly graphic first-person rape of Guinevere by her cousin Maelgwn (Queen of the Summer Stars by Persia Woolley)
Mordred kidnaps and tries to rape his sister Avlynn (Merlin and the Book of the Beasts (2009))
Increased racism.
Using modern slurs like the N word against Palomides (The Once and Future King by T. H. White)
Aggressive and confrontational Safir “restrained” by white characters and called “homicidal Moor” by Kay (The Book of Gaheris by Kari Sperring)
Palomides speaking in broken English mentioned as a “turn-off” for Morgause (Morgawse by Lavinia Collins)
Palomides a former slave orphaned and raised culturally British instead of immigrating to Britain and constantly othered as “the Arab companion” when the others don’t have modifiers like that (Queen of the Summer Stars and Legend in Autumn by Persia Woolley)
Depicting Arab Bertilak as perpetrator of pederasty, random anti-black or anti-Asian allusions, random antisemitism, etc. (Arthur Rex by Thomas Berger)
Tristan wanting to put down “barbarian” Palomides and drives him to madness (The Enchanted Cup by Dorothy James Roberts)
Black face Palomides (The Black Knight (1954))
Adding pedophilia/child brides.
Girls including Morgaine forced into ritualistic sexual situations for “ceremonial” reasons (Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley)
Eleven year old Morgause given to Lot in marriage by her mother Igraine who lied about her age (Morgawse by Lavinia Collins)
Child bride Isolde (Legend in Autumn by Lavinia Collins, Enemy of God by Bernard Cornwell)
Merlin sexually involved with fosterling Nimuë and later attracted to young Olwen (The Winter King and Excalibur by Bernard Cornwell)
Morgause preying on minors (The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart, The Book of Gaheris by Kari Sperring)
Pedophile/serial killers Kay and Mordred (Dragon’s Child and The Bloody Cup by M. K. Hume, The Queen’s Knight by Marvin Borowsky)
Morgause sexually abusing Agravaine (Queen of the Summer Stars by Lavinia Collins)
Pederast Arthur sleeping with young Peredur and Geraint (Arthur the King by Allan Massie)
Lancelot grooms young Mordred to be his lover (Mordred, Bastard Son by Douglas Clegg)
Bademagus raping 13yo Lynette (The King’s Damosel by Vera Chapman)
Warp a character into a rapist.
Morgause/Morgan tricking Arthur to sire Mordred (The Once and Future King by T. H White, Excalibur (1981), The Hollow Hills by Mary Stewart, Bedivere by Wayne Wise, Morgan by Lavinia Collins, Guinevere by Sharan Newman, Camelot (2011))
Gawain threatening Guinevere with rape then eventually banished from court for raping someone else (Guinevere and Morgawse by Lavinia Collins)
Exceedingly graphic first-person rapes of Morgause by Lot and Mordred, Morgan by Urien (Morgawse and Morgan by Lavinia Collins)
Morgause laughing when she learns how traumatized Arthur is after her seduction of him (Queen of Summer Stars by Persia Woolley)
Agravaine threatening to rape Guinevere (The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf)
Perceval raping Layla and getting turned on watching the rape of someone else (A Knight’s Tale by Richard Monaco)
Lancelot forcing himself onto Guinevere (First Knight (1995))
Lancelot raping Galahad’s gf (The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell)
Bors tries to rig a dice game in which the prize is sex with Nimuë (Cursed (2020))
“He would not fucking say/do that.”
Arthur, Lot, Geraint, Urien, and Lancelot are wife beaters with minimal to no consequences (Warrior of the West by M. K. Hume, I Am Mordred by Nancy Springer, Igraine and Morgan by Lavinia Collins, Knight Life by Peter David)
Lancelot doesn’t rescue Guinevere leaving her to burn at the stake by Arthur (Fall of Knight by Peter David)
Lancelot used Guinevere for political gain (Excalibur by Bernard Cornwell, The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman)
Lancelot married to Elaine then cheats on her with Guinevere and causes his wife’s death leaving Galahad an orphan (Merlin (1998))
Agravaine skins Elaine’s cat and wears it (Queen of Summer Stars by Persia Woolley)
Gareth helps Gawain torture Pellinore to death (I Am Mordred by Nancy Springer)
Genocide.
Arthur picks up where Uther left off and continues to commit genocide against magic-users, Merlin helps (BBC Merlin (2008-2012)
The red paladins commit genocide against the fay, Lancelot helps (Cursed (2020))
Gawain uses sun powers to commit genocide in the holy land, other knights like Tristan, Mordred, and Agravaine help (F/GO Camelot Wandering (2020) and F/GO Camelot Paladin Agateram (2021))
Lancelot as high king of Britain commits genocide against allies of Arthur to stay in power, other knights like Dagonet, Lot, and Calogrenant help (Kaamelott: First Installment (2021))
So yeah. It isn’t ideal that Lamorak is old in Sword of Lancelot (1963) or Dagonet is stoic and boring in King Arthur (2004). But like, whatever! I like those films! Same goes for replacing Gaheris with Geraint in Sarah Zettel’s series or cutting Gareth out of Gillian Bradshaw’s trilogy. Kind of a bummer, lame even, but not a deal breaker. The things about these bad retellings that drive me mad are much more sinister than that, rooted in really detestable opinions about women and children and people of color.
Can’t Mordred, Agravaine, and Morgan be normal scheming/evil/power hungry like they were in BBC The Legend of King Arthur (1979) or Howard Pyle’s books or Knights of the Round Table (1953) instead of whatever the above are doing? Not to mention the complete violation of Guinevere, Morgause, Lancelot, and Gawain as characters. I’m so tired, man.
Hope this clears things up. Sorry if you made it through that list. I’m sure you hated reading it as much as I hated writing it. But I think it makes it clear the problem here and that I’m not just being picky. The psychic damage is taking its toll.

Addicted to You
two - after hours
TW/ mentions of sex
Tumblr media
As much as Sulli loved her coworkers and mentors, having a drink with them after the most stressful shift she's endured at the clinic was not on her to-do list.  Kaycee still had over an hour left on her shift, the one person she can drink with and not just talk about work and the events of the day.
Sullis' eyes scanned the bustling bar as Marion went on and on about a bunny that had been brought in for routine checkup. As soon as she recognized the one person who could keep her busy and help her unwind, she apologised to the older veterinarian and excused herself .
“Brady!” She called his name, bidding goodbye to her coworkers as she waved at the bronzed boy.
“Hey, Sulli.” He smiled down at her as she skipped up to him with a flirtatious smile.
“I’ve missed you.” She teased lightheartedly.
“I’ve been busy with work.” He said with a sigh. She wasn’t surprised that that's where he had disappeared to.  Collin had been absent for a while as well, according to Kaycee.
“Too busy it seems.” She beamed, wrapping her arms around his waist in a hug as she mumbled against his chest. “We got some lost time to make up for.”
He smirked slightly before it fell off of his face completely. She could practically see the wheels turning in his head as he figured out his next move.
“Are you feeling alright?” She asked genuinely concerned. He wasn’t acting like the Brady she had come to know. The Brady that had a charmed her within the first ten minutes of meeting. The one that had pulled her into the bathroom of the club they were at for Kaycees birthday with such confidence and turned her legs to jello.
“Yeah, I just…don’t think we should do this anymore.” Brady scratched them back of his neck, a nervous tick.
“Do what? We’re just friends..” She asked, cocking her eyebrow as she dropped her arms, folding them over her chest.
He tilted his head like a puppy, “You know what I mean.”
She wanted to laugh, its not like they were never going to see each other again, it was impossible giving how glued together Collin and Kaycee were, “You don’t want to fuck me is what you’re saying, thats fine. Look around, Brady, theres plenty of guys in this room for me to fuck. But you’re my best friend's boyfriend's best friend,”
Brady sighed, taking a step back from her and unable to maintain eye contact,“You don’t get it, I’ve been told to stay away from you.”
“You’ve been told.” She narrowed her eyes, not liking where this was headed, “By who?”
“It doesn’t matter.” He shook his head, giving her a small smile marred by an apologetic gaze,  “I’m sure I’ll see you around.”
“Brady,” She called after him, but he didn’t even glance back.
Sulli watched as he walked back over to a group of men and slid into the booth.  Her eyes scanned the group, they all looked so familiar. She landed on one in particular and her stomach dropped, his dark features prominent, he had barely aged from the last time she saw him, but everything about him seemed more mature. She looked from Paul to Brady and everything clicked.
She glared at the older one.
 Paul's eyes flitted away from hers for a second as the man next to him said something that she couldn’t hear, before he was looking at her again, an unreadable expression on his face.
Just like that, her night was ruined.
That familiar feeling of betrayal set in from the last time she was with him slowly turned into rage, simmering within her.
He was playing with fire considering she knew his deepest secret, and now Brady and Collins.
If this had happened four years ago when she had nothing to lose, she would’ve let that wolf out of the bag. But now, she had a future to look forward to, and she was not going to ruin it on him.
He would just call her crazy, tell everyone that she made it up.
As if he didn’t physically show her.
She had been sitting there on Sue Clearwaters porch with her daughter in the middle of the night, as he shifted in right in front of her. Paul had told her between the stupid dreamer catcher he had given her and him being a wolf, she would always be safe.
What a load of shit, especially considering where she ended up less than a week later.
Shipped off to the first of many foster homes after they couldn't track down her mom. Julie, her social worker, had said the family was nice and welcoming, all that blew up in both their faces once the husband, Mo, found out Sullivan was a unisex name.
The foster son they thought they were getting didn’t exist, instead they got Sulli.
She never knew what utter hate felt like until Julie left her on the stairs of her new foster family's home, alone and afraid. Paul was nowhere to be found.
She turned to the bartender, quickly flagging him down to order another drink just as someone saddled in next to her. A deep voice chuckled as he spoke, “I know that guy wasn’t stupid enough to walk away from you.”
“Can’t win them all.” She muttered, taking money out of her purse to pay for her drink.
“It’s on me.” he said as he stopped her, placing a twenty dollar bill on the bar top for the bartender. Sulli muttered a thanks just as he asked,  “What's your name?”
“Sulli.” She mumbled, more interested in the drink that had been placed in front of her than trying to catch his name.
“You look great. I just know what's under your little dress looks even better.” He shamelessly flirted.
“You’re not wrong, it's just not for you.” Sulli stated, turning to lean against the bar, getting a better look at the man next her. His dirty blonde hair nearly glowed in the dim atmosphere, he was clean shaving, not too muscular but it worked for him. She liked his height, the difference between them not neck breaking, but just enough. He seemed like a good boy, not exactly her type, but she wasn't one to shy away from a challenge.
“No?” He asked with a raised eyebrow, “Not even for one night?”
Her weak spot.  One night stands were an addiction of sorts, one night of fun and then pretending like it never happened the next morning. A way to move on from Brady had just fallen into her lap. She pondered his offer, glancing over at the booth of over sized men. She could make out Paul glaring at the glass of amber liquid in front of him, not listening to his friends, no, he was listening to her conversation with that stupid wolf hearing of his. while she welcomed it in the the nights she had couldn't sleep when she was ten, she was going to use it to her own advantage now.
“What's in it for me?” She asked knowingly.
“Come back to my place and find out.” He murmured confidently. She bit her lip as his fingers pulled up the side of her dress teasing the skin on her thigh. The goosebumps on her arms were a dead giveaway of her arousal. Assuming her nameless companion was any good at picking up cues.
“I have an even better idea.” She smirked, grabbing his hand and slid its way under the skirt of her dress and tugging him along behind her. It was a petty thing, the decision to lead him to the mens bathroom, rather than take up his offer of going home with him, solely because they needed to pass Brady.
As they did, she sent him a wink, to which he frowned. His loss is another man's opportunity.
Even pettier, was the fact that Paul, who had decided to take it upon himself to ruin not only her situationship, but also her friendship with Brady, was in a close enough distance to where they were headed, that his little wolf ears would pick up every moan and groan. Why would he want her fucking his friend when she could just fuck a stranger? Great thinking, Paul, she thought as she locked the door of the bathroom stall and turned to her new friend with a flirty smile.
-----
After cleaning herself up in the women's bathroom as best she could, Sulli beelined it for the exit. Hoping her male companion wasn’t up for a round two, she sure was not. She looked at the time on her phone and quickly sent a message to Kaycee, asking for a ride as she knew she would be getting off work at any moment, and Sulli needed to vent.
“Sulli,” Paul said gruffly as soon she rounded the corner of the door.
“Sullivan.” She corrected him, stopping as he blocked her path, “Only my friends get to call me Sulli.”
“We’re not friends anymore?” He asked innocently, and the rage that had been simmering all night began to brew.
“What do you want?” She retorted, on the verge of losing her patience.
“You’re playing a dangerous game in there.” Paul warned her, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Now you care about my safety?” She snapped, taking a step towards him, close enough to feel the heat emitting off of his skin and to breathe in his scent. It's still the same, like sandalwood and cinnamon, and that makes her seethe.  “Or are you just jealous?” She asked, batting her eyelashes up at him, her lips spreading into a grin as she watched him visibly swallow. He was nervous and she revelled in it.
“That's why you told Brady to stay away from me, isn’t it?” She hummed smugly as he refused to answer,  “Hope you enjoyed listening. See you never, Paul.”
Paul chuckled darkly, “Thats why you fucked that loser? You wanted me to listen.” He goaded, licking his lips before clicking his tongue against his teeth in disapproval, “That’s kinky.”
She narrowed  her eyes, “Says the guy who stuck around to listen to a girl eight years younger than him moan to another guys--”
“Paul!” Brady and another man who resembled him stood at the corner of the bar, waiting for him,  “We’ve got to go.”
“Time for you to go howl at the moon.” She said mockingly.
“Wait,” Paul stopped her, gripping her arm firmly. The heat was familiar, he was just as warm as Brady was. It should have clicked the first night she spent tangled underneath the younger man, but it didn’t. It made her want him more. Sulli wrenched her arm from his grasp, and he clenched his jaw at the action before starting to ask,“Have you--”
“No, I haven't told anyone you’re secretly a furry.” She quipped, smiling sweetly as she said, “The biggest kink of them all.”
“Funny.” He muttered, though he didn't smile. She wasn’t sure if he knew how to smile considering his face was in the same stoic expression it was when she clocked him from across the bar. Paul ran his hand through his hair before asking, “Do you need a ride home?”
“Not a chance in hell.” Sulli scoffed, “I’d fuck an Uber driver for a free ride before I ever got into a car with you.”
“Sulli!” She heard her name being called. She knew the voice well and turned to look at the parking lot, seeing Kaycee wave from inside her car.
“Have a nice night.” She said, bristling with annoyance from the man beside her. She did not spare him another glance as she walked  over to Kaycee’s now parked car. She knew her friend had just gotten off of work, and was thankful Collin hadn’t made an appearance tonight, allowing her to leave with her friend freely. “There's my DD.”
“You look like you had a fun night,” Kaycee whistled at her appearance before looking behind her and asking “Where's Brady?”
Sulli frowned at the question, responding with bitter honesty, “Brady and I are no more. Your boyfriend's best friend has zero balls.”
“Did you fuck that guy whos currently watching you like a hawk?” Kaycee asked, nudging her head back to where Paul stood.
She barked out a laugh, “He wishes. He's the one who neutered Brady,”
“Well, he's hot as hell.” Her friend noted innocently. Sulli had never told her about her time with the Clearwaters, or that Paul had broken her trust at the ripe young age of eleven. He was a liar, and that's all he’ll ever be to her. No amount of hotness will change that. “Get on him.”
“He’s a tool.” She muttered, getting into the passenger seat of Kaycees car. She looked out the side view mirror and watched as Paul jogged off towards a waiting Brady, the other man nowhere to be seen.

June of Doom, day 1:
“You don’t want to do that”

*~*~*~*~*
Flint came to oversee his latest project before it was to be unveiled to the rest of the world. His perfect weapon. His trained mongrel mutt that he had been beating into submission since the day it was born.
It was in an enclosed reinforced cylinder. It took Flint’s engineering team weeks to figure out something strong enough to hold it. His little devil. Obeying only the whims of its master.
The doors slid open and Flint walked in. The scientists overseeing experiment 34214 all stopped when they noticed their chief step into the observation room.
“All hands to stations,” Flint said after a moment of respectful silence. His response was a resounding: “yes sir!”
The head scientist working under Flint’s command fell into step beside him, listing off the usual run down.
Vitals: good.
Mood: as expected.
Muscle capacity: normal.
Brain function: normal.
“All is well with Wolfe today, sir,” said Thrawn. Thrawn was an eccentric to say the least, but she had loose morals and looser ethics and wanted to push the boundaries of science.
No matter the cost.
Flint could work with that.
“Doctor Thrawn I must insist you call the subject by its medical name today.”
Thrawn just glanced at him from the corner of her eye with a wicked grin on her face. “He likes the name Wolfe.”
“A bit of professionalism today wouldn’t hurt, Doctor.”
“And here I thought you liked my unorthodox approach.”
Flint smiled. “There is a line to be drawn at public occasions. Once the day is out you can call it whatever you like.”
“Subject 34214 it is, sir.”
“Excellent. We must make sure this goes off without a hitch. We’ve worked too hard and too long for it to be any less than perfect.”
“Aye, sir,” said Thrawn and then went back to barking orders at the scientists on mains control. Flint just watched with a small, satisfied smile on his face. He was the first in the history of genetics to mutate humans beyond their original form.
To make them stronger. Faster. Smarter.
Earnest Flint’s name would go down in the history books, the next chapter following Darwin’s theory of evolution. Man made evolution. Flint made evolution.
It was time to show the world exactly what Flintlock Mechanics could do.
When the donors and shareholders started arriving along with the reporters for a few paper publications into the building it definitely generated a buzz. Flint smiled and welcomed them all in his perfectly tailored grey suit and tie. He even invited his rival from College who grinned widely when they saw Flint.
“Peters,” said Flint and put his arm out. The other man, Peters, grabbed his elbow and pulled him in for a hug. “Good to see you. So happy you could make it.”
“Of course, Flint, wouldn’t miss it for the world,” said Peters stepping back. He was wearing a red dress shirt tucked into slacks, his stubble perfectly trimmed. The same renegade man he always was. Then Peters stepped back and revealed a raven haired woman who’s hazel eyes seemed a little too inquisitive, a little too judging.
Peters gestured to the woman in the red dress matching Peters, and said: “you of course remember Collins. Or should I say Doctor Collins.”
Flint smiled politely and bowed slightly, taking Collins’ hand in his and pressing a kiss to the knuckles: “of course. How are you Marion?”
“Intrigued to say the least, Flint,” she told him withdrawing her hand. Peters put his arm out and Collins took it with a demure smile. “Let us hope you haven’t broken too many laws of the Geneva convention for this revelation.”
Then the pair walked away, and Flint squeezed his hand into a fist, a scowl trying to make its way onto his face as he glanced after the pair. Then he took a deep breath and went back to his host’s smile and greeted his guests with charm and poise.
It was easier to walk back into the observation room while the curtains were drawn to see Thrawn smile confidently at him and put his mind at ease.
“How are our guests?”
“Opinionated and intrigued,” said Flint, not getting Collins’ comment out of his head. “Is everything perfect?”
“Running smoothly, sir.”
“Wonderful. I best go out and introduce it then.”
“You’ll do great, sir.”
Flint smiled, as thin as it was, and walked back out to the whispering crowd. Some had glasses of champagne in their hand. Peters was one such person, raising it in a toast as soon as Flint walked up to the mic.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am so happy to see so many of you showed up,” said Flint honestly, and that got a couple laughs from the crowd.
“I must admit my invitation was quite vague but I did promise you a night to remember,” said Flint, his confidence settling into his shoulder’s and his charming smile. “Tonight, you shall witness history. My team of geneticists and biochemists have developed human DNA that will bring our species into its next phase of evolution. I present to you: subject 34214.”
Flint boomed the name into the mic, stepping back and spreading his right arm wide as the curtains fell and gasps filled the room. The control room was sunk below the raised cylinder in the middle of the room, housing Subject 34214.
Gasps filled the room, some shouts of outrage demanding to know what the meaning of this was. That it wasn’t a subject but a human being.
Flint raised his hands to quieten the crowd down, his pleasant smile reassuring as he said: “I understand your concern. However, subject 34214 is not human. His DNA was sequenced into a cadaver which had donated his body to science.”
“That is an insult to his memory,” cried a man from the audience.
“Please, I understand your outrage. I understand. But without bodies donated to science we would never have the cures for modern medicine. We would never be able to fix any problem in our bodies without having first dissected them and seen what was inside,” Flint implored, and as he spoke the crowd’s outrage too settled. “Subject 34214 has human tissue. A brain. A heart. Muscles. Bones. Thoughts. Feelings.”
“How?” A clear voice demanded from the crowd. Collins. She was standing. “How can he have such things if he was dead?”
“Clinically dead,” said Flint. “Our subject was in a coma since the age of ten. At seventeen his parents having seen no brain activity decided to pull the plug. That’s when Flintlock mechanics stepped in.”
“A child cannot donate it’s body to science,” said Collins, voice hard.
“No,” said Flint, “but his parents could and did. As he told his parents he wanted to be a scientist when he was younger, they thought the best way to give him his one dream was to donate his body to science.”
A couple of lies and half truths and very lightly dusting over the intense blackmail and settlement the family received to stay quiet after signing their NDA.
Flint smiled humbly. Maybe a more human approach was better with this crowd. “We have taken to calling our subject: Wolfe, as he enjoys listening to Mozart to calm down after a long day.”
And another lie, wow. He was on a roll. Flint should have been a politician instead of a scientist. Maybe in the next life.
“May I present the one and only of his kind, Wolfe!”
Again he spread his arms dramatically, and turned to look through the observation glass and into the room to see Wolfe awaken.
It’s eyes flew open, too bright a blue to be human, blinking owlishly at it’s audience. Hair settling in its unnatural white waves. Wolfe placed a hand on the glass of its cage and stopped levitating, placing it’s feet on the ground. That elicited a couple gasps from the crowd. To know that while he slept he hovered, something not humanely possible.
Because Subject 34214 was not human.
It was human adjacent. Human-esque and that’s where the similarities ended.
“You must let us get a closer look,” said one of the shareholders. Flint found his wide eyes in the crowd. Quinton. Flint smiled as the glass to the observation deck opened and Flint invited everyone up on stage. To further inspect his creation. His creature.
A man in a slim black tailored suit and black dress shirt caught Flint’s eye as he straddled behind everyone. He was pale, red rimming his eyes to a point it almost looked painful. Sickly. Flint stopped him when he made to walk by, a cold smile found it’s way to his pale lips.
Dark eyes found Flint’s, so dark brown it almost looked black.
He stretched his hand in greeting, and said with the lilt of a French accent: “I don’t think we have been properly introduced. You must forgive me, I arrived later than expected. My name is Felix Graves. You of course need no introduction, Mr Flint.”
“My friends call me Flint,” said Flint with a charming smile.
The stranger smiled at him and it put Flint on edge. Something primal in his body screaming at him to run. “Enchanté. My friends call me Graves. How delightful to make your acquaintance.”
Then Graves dropped Flint’s hand and gestured for Flint to walk with him towards the cage. Flint obeyed.
“It is quite extraordinary what you have done here, Mr Flint,” said Graves, gesturing at the lab and the cage. “To have created life from death. It is beautiful, no?”
“Like I said, there was still life in the boy’s body,” said Flint, finding it harder and harder to keep the smile on his face.
Graves just smiled at him, turning his head so Flint could see the extent of it. It was a genuine smile, Flint could tell, but there was something behind it. Something lurking beneath skin, hidden, dangerous, malevolent.
“Ah. That is not the story you should tell the word, Mr Flint. People will get bored of semantics. You must craft the tale to enrapture the public, oui?” They stopped behind the crowd looking up at the cage and the inhuman boy. “The man who makes life from death, that is you, Monsieur.”
“And who are you, Mr Graves?” Flint asked and Graves smiled like it was the question he was waiting to be asked.
“Allow me to show you,” said Graves. He moved through the crowd with ease, slipping behind and through people trying to view the cage. Flint could only watch, eyebrows knitting together in confusion before he saw Graves stop beside the cage. Raising his hand to press to the glass.
“Mr Graves!” Flint called in a panic. “You don’t want to do that. It is unsafe.”
Graves smiled back showing all their teeth. “I know.”
The moment Graves pressed his hand to the glass Wolfe looked down at him. A cackle of green electricity lit up the cage, eliciting gasps from the crowd in delight. They thought it was part of the show.
Flint knew better.
Wolfe’s eyes went to Flint then and flashed an unnatural green.
Then the electricity went out and the lab was thrust into darkness.
The sound of glass shattering and then a scream turned to many. People panicked, running back towards the auditorium, back towards the safety of the exits. When the lights came back on Graves was gone.
And the cage was empty.
Broken from the inside out, and people were screaming. Flint just looked down to Thrawn who was standing in shock staring at the empty cage much like he was. Then he saw her fall to her knees, then collapse to the side. Only then did he see the scorch marks over her heart.
Someone grabbed his arm and turned him away from the scene, all he saw was red.
Peters.
“Hey Flint! Flint?! Look at me buddy, hey! The door’s locked, Flint. Why are the doors locked? People are panicking.”
“I— the doors shouldn’t be locked,” said Flint, breathless.
“Well they are and no one can get out. Do you have the keys? A back entrance? Hey, Flint! Look at me!”
But Flint’s eyes were drawn to the stage where Graves now stood at the microphone, his dark eyes catching Flint’s with a wink and a smirk as he said: “ladies and gentlemen, do not panic. This is no time for fear or tears. That part comes later, please everyone take your seats for the next part of this presentation.”

Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 1]
Tumblr media
This is a rough chart of all the 33 mentioned in RBM I's will. The names of many of the spouses are known, but are not added. Note that Robert Mills (whom he calls Robert Packard) is considered a child of RBM I here, even though RBM I was his adopted father. The ancestry of the Billmans (Dr. B. Billman and Mrs. B. Billman), Cunninghams (Joyce and Bessie), Clarence A. Hammond, Jr., Mrs. R.H. Hodgins, and Mrs. Marion Robbins is not currently known. The connection of Edward Mills to his grandchildren is speculated here. It could also be through a daughter. It is only theorized that Elizabeth Chalmers is a sister of Ida and Edward E. This could be wrong.
RBM I's will mentions over 30 people, giving a whole new genealogy I wasn't aware of previously. It also gives a list of places where his relatives are living. [1] Some are living in Fort Collins, Colorado, like Elizabeth Chalmers (RBM I's grandniece), and others in Como, Colorado, like Ida Spindle (RBM I's grandniece), Hollis Spindle (Ida's son), and Robert Spindle (Ida's son). There  are even some in Colorado Springs, like Edward E. Mills (RBM I's grandnephew), Jean Marie Mills (Edward's daughter), Marjorie Mills (Edward's daughter). We know well those who were living in Cheviot (RBM II, Helen, and Carol). There were others in Heath, Massachusetts (RBM I's nephew Charles Packard), Melrose, Massachusetts (RBM I's niece, Margaret Brown), Littleton, New Hampshire (RBM I's niece, Mary Church), Dalton, Massachusetts (RBM I's nephew John Packard), Bridgeport, Connecticut (RBM I's niece Marion Deane), South Boston, Massachusetts (RBM I's niece Mabel Whitley Landstrom). We already know about those nieces and nephews fully well. But what about Elizabeth Chalmers of Fort Collins, Colorado, the Spindles (Ida, Hollis, and Robert) of Como, Colorado, and the Millses of Colorado Springs (Edward E., Jean Marie, and Marjorie)?
In order to answer this question, I turned to newspapers.com first. Unfortunately the Fort Collins Coloradoan only goes back to 1972. So, I didn't find anything for Elizabeth Chalmers there. On Find a Grave there is only one pertinent result of an Elizabeth Chalmers who lived from 1904 to 1986. But that early birth date makes me doubt it is her. In order to figure out a bit more, we should step back to RBM I's brother, Edward. I described him in a short entry on Find A Grave:
Edward was born in July 8, 1848, born in Glens Falls, Warren, New York, United States. Evidence does not show he served in the Civil War at age 17. Instead, he was a farm laborer in Chester, Warren, New York, USA from 1870-1875, at least, married to a woman named Edna, and living with his brother, Robert Mills, and others. He would stay as an agricultural laborer until 1900, while possibly being a butcher (along with other jobs) in Brooklyn, New York, USA over the years. In 1910, he was a boarder at the Hotel Sterling, a hotel run by his brother, Robert Mills. He died on Feb. 14, 1918 in Colorado, 9 years after his wife had passed on August 6, 1909.
This post was originally published on WordPress in February 2019.
Unfortunately, there is no obituary I can find of him. I may, at some point, order his death certificate from Colorado, one of the state's many vital records.
As for Ida Spindle, we are a bit more lucky! Her 1969 obituary in the Windsor Beacon, titled "Rites Held Monday For Ida Spindle, 68," says exactly where died and when she married, and whom, interestingly:
Funeral services for Ida M. Spindle, 68,were held Monday morning at Fairmount Memorial chapel, followed by interment in Fairmount. Mrs. Spindle recently underwent surgery for surgery for a broken hip and was hospitalized 10 days prior to her death. Born Feb. 17, 1901 at Olney Springs, Colo., Ida Mills attended schools in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Colorado Woman's college, and Iowa State college at Ames. She and Berthelot Spindle were married Sept. 2, 1926. She taught school in Park county and served as superintendent of Park county schools from 1941 to 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Spindle moved to the Windsor area in 1953 and operated operated a dairy farm southwest of town until moving to Denver last year. She was a member of Columbia Chapter 16 Order of Eastern Star, Windsor Methodist church, and Chapter U PEO. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Hollis R. of Camarillo, Calif., and Robert B. of Denver; and seven grandchildren.
However, this does not mention her parents. Her Find A Grave entry isn't much help either, as it just has a photograph of her and Berthelot's tombstone, with no other information:

Can we get gold watcher headcanons? Idk if you got this before but if you did my bad
Long post again so I'll put half of them under the cut!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gold Watcher headcanons:
Most of them are possessed by the souls of Bierce's old errand boys, they're the ones that begged for life, mercy and loyalty to Malak
That somehow had a 'good' outcome, considering Malak could've just killed them for sure
At first before they started to possess the statue, they were just sentient statues made only for killing, nothing more
But once there were a handful of possessed statues, some of the sentient ones just, seemed to have lost connection with the ring piece??
Cuz one day they just took their place on those little pedestals around the manor's halls and just, never moved again-
Some of them were greedy bastards with an ego bigger than their Ds, stone cold soldiers that did terrible shit in name of the 'law'(maybe some regret what they did idk) or lovable parents/parental figures that did a handful of bad things in their youth and wound up there
There are 11 statues in total, ten gold ones that chase you in the maze and manor, and the stone statue at the very front of the maze(which is also possessed)
There's like, one last sentient statue that seems to be in thin ice to just go motionless as well
They've been together for so long they're emotionally attached to each other now, though the egotistic ones won't admit it
There's 6 statues that actually don't like killing, one of them being the Stone Watcher
I gave them names
There's Henry, a lovable father figure made with jade parts
William, Henry's twin brother made out of a very pale gold, tired, fatherly and a little sadistic
Marshall, the Stone Watcher at the beginning of the maze, nature lover and overall a gentle giant
Apollo, a cold but kind soldier made of white gold, has quite a few scars around his face, very gentlemanly but he's usually pretty rough on people
Ezekiel, a dramatic actor made with gold and rose gold, wears a mask that covers his right eye in a diagonal fashion, he's very dramatic and smug, occasionally flirty just to fluster the others
Marion, snarky fashionista, a bit of a Germaphobe, calls you a peasant as an insult and then make you new clothes to either yours or his liking, he'll never admit it but if your interested in something he likes he'll immediately get a soft spot for you
Mervill, thinks he's royalty and wants to be treated as such, calls you a peasant at first, but now it's just habit, thinks he's better than you
Maxwell, another one that calls you a peasant, loud and brutal, Ezekiel's younger brother, this asshole accidently sliced his jaw and cut his own hand off, so now he has a mechanical hand and is honestly the only one who can do the jaw thing they do in the game
Then there's Collin, whose cold, distant and violent, he's Ezekiel and Maxwell's older brother , he has a few soft spots but it'll take you at least a year to reach him, intimidates anyone trying to talk to him that isn't his brothers
Ira, another gentle giant that helps you escape the place, or gets attached and wants to keep you, sadly none of his tries of helping out worked
And finally, fucking Bennet, he's the last sentient statue holding on to dear existence before going full statue, he barely feels any emotion of his own but feels greatly attached to his friends, trying to understand the concept of positive emotions. He also won't stop trying to end your existence
If Ira ends up convincing Henry and William to keep you then I recommend you hang around one of the statues most of the time, cuz Bennet will try to find a pattern on times you're alone and WILL try to kill you
Despite whatever to others say, he exists to serve Malak, but he was directly instructed to obey the leaders as well so he's confused by the time he's right behind you to end you off he just hesitates enough time for another statue to come around and stop him
Most of them will ask you millions of questions about how the outside world is now, since they died from 1700-1800s
Be prepared for loads of explaining to do cuz they won't understand half of what you mention, like computers and such
The statues that don't actually like killing are Henry, William, Marshall, Ezekiel, Ira, Marion
When She Grows Up When my daughter was still such a little girl, just putting together words and walking, my heart melted every time I looked at her.  She was the spitting image of my wife, Marion; same golden hair, same eyes and smile, the way she held her head up when she looked us right in the eye. Karrin was small but a pistol from the very start and she went non-stop until she literally fell down, too tired to get up again. “No!  Not bedtime yet!” was her battle cry every night and I loved her for that.  No matter what Marion hoped, I could already see our daughter was a fighter, not a quiet little person ready to obey all the rules that might make life easier. Our daughter.  That little bundle of arms and legs with a cute little button nose. . .and a set of lungs like no other.  It felt perfect anyway, the sound of a child in our home.  Collin couldn’t keep his eyes off of her as she grew.  I remember the night he gave her a stuffed animal, a soft, floppy German Shepherd she carried around for years, “My powese dog,” later named “Smokey” after an earnest conversation with the other toys in her room and, of course, Collin.  That poor dog had to be washed once a week because he went anywhere she did, including mud puddles and snow forts. In due course we gave Karrin little brothers and finally a little sister, but she was always special because she came first.  And she was quick to learn and would play on her own for hours but she always stopped when Collin came through the door and they spent time together.  Sometimes I found them in his study.  He’d be at his desk working on reports or case summaries or even cleaning his gun.  I’d long ago given up telling him not to do it with Karrin in the room even though it made me uneasy; Collins just smiled at me and had our daughter show me all the parts and then tell him in what order the pieces went back together.  She was 4 and I thought she’d grow out of it. When my daughter turned 5 and went to Catholic school, at her mother’s insistence, I wasn’t sure how things might turn out.  Karrie was such a determined little person I worried about the nuns trying to deal with her.  But she loved school and her teacher told us our daughter had no problems learning the rules.  It was how to APPLY the rules that caught Karrie’s attention.  She came home every day and tried to explain the whats and whys to her little brothers.  They weren’t very interested and my daughter looked them straight in the eye, set her stubborn little jaw and patiently went through the rules another time.  “Karrie,” Marion said in her best mother’s voice, “they’re not old enough to...”  “Mama, no!  Only Daddy calls me Karrie!!  Only Daddy.  I told you before.”  And it was true, I was the only one allowed to use that term of endearment.  I’d had to get up and leave the room to keep from laughing while Marion and our daughter settled the dispute.  God knows I loved them both so much. As she got older there were times when only Collin could do anything with Karrin.  Oh, she’d stay in the kitchen and help me make cookies or set up tea parties to keep her brothers busy while I fixed dinner.  I wondered if she paid any attention to cooking or baking, things my own mother passed on to me; Collin’s mother always assured me Karrin took in everything around her.  And her grandmother seemed to know when Karrin and I needed a break from each other and she’d take Karrin to her house for a while.  The boys liked going as well, but it was special time for Karrin.  I always believed she tried out her softer side when she went with her grandmother and was somewhere we couldn’t see her.  The boys could be such a handful sometimes that I started to look forward to the offers to let Karrin work off some energy by staying over.  She always came home with a smile on her face, some little secret she wouldn’t share.  And occasionally a kitten hidden in her bag. When Karrie was about 9, my work as a Black Cat started to send me to some dark places.  It was obvious to some of us on the force that things weren’t quite “normal” anymore.  Brutal robberies, murders with odd twists, attacks we couldn’t explain with the usual language.  Bit by bit, we found ourselves in situations that left us uneasy.  I tried not to carry that home with me but cases started piling into one another.  And then, one night, I ran into someone/something that shook me to my core.  I knew this “being” wasn’t human, not completely, but she started mentioning my firstborn child and things to come that she’d have to be ready for.  My Karrie, 10 years old, should NEVER need to face those kinds of things but I didn’t know how to keep her safe. I bottled things up, then I started taking a bottle of whiskey into my study when I was home.  And I started to see my daughter in a different light.  She still liked spending time in my study but we didn’t talk the way we used to.  She got quiet, so quiet that sometimes I forgot she was in the room and that was my mistake.  I had a bad habit of talking to myself about the cases we worked on shift and Karrie heard some of it.  Marion walked in on that one night; after that she didn’t let our daughter spend so much time with me.  My mother tried to talk with me about the situation but I couldn’t do it.  My mother was a smart, generous and loving person but she was made of steel and she warned me that I needed to get things right with my family before I hurt every single one in it.  And Karrie was at the top of that list.  She said she and Marion would always be there for the kids but Karrin was modeling herself after me and I needed to recognize what that meant. “Karrin, please go get your brother off the monkey bars.”  “Tell your youngest brother to stop taking the ball away from his older brother.”  “I wish I could take you to the playground but right now the baby needs changing and a nap.  We’ll go later.”  I must have repeated those lines hundreds of times.  Karrin always gave me that look” just like her father, then shook her head and went to do as I’d asked.   The school thought she was a great student but her report card always mentioned some issues with “attitude” and her never ending string of questions.  Karrin didn’t mind being told WHAT to do IF you told her why.  “How” wasn’t always necessary because she was an inventive little person.  Sports seemed to help keep her focused but unless she picked the sport you could be wasting time and money.  She’d hated ballet lessons with undisguised loathing that even encouragement from Collin’s mother didn’t change.  The instructor and I bribed my daughter to stay in her class by letting her take gymnastics.  Collin’s mother jokingly mentioned fencing to Karrin and to no one’s surprise she’d taken to it like a duck to water.  That poor instructor spent half his time telling her not to be so aggressive but he wasted his breath.  She’d always liked sticks and “combat” and spent hours in the back yard with her brothers, all of them merrily knocking away at each other.  I finally took a picture of them really working at it to her 5th grade teacher because he was so concerned about the bruises all over her arms.  And then there was the incident with a miniature cap pistol, a Christmas gift from her grandmother.  I worried it wasn’t appropriate for a girl her age to play with it so much, and then one evening while she and the boys played cops and robbers her brothers yelled she was cheating.  “Karrin, what are you doing?  The boys said. . ”  Karrin just shook her head, looked straight at me and said, as she pulled the cap pistol out of her sock:  “It’s not cheating, Mom, it’s a hold-out gun.”  That’s when I seriously started explaining to Collin he really had to think about what he talked about when he and his daughter spent time together.  I knew his partner and some of the other Black Cats adored Karrin but they’d all sworn not to talk to her about their work.  Collin had sons to follow in his footsteps.  I so hoped Karrin would follow in mine.
"MANK" (2020) Review
Tumblr media
"MANK" (2020) Review When it comes to biopics about Hollywood history, I must admit that I have a slight addiction to them. I really enjoy reading about Hollywood history. And I especially enjoy reading about the industry's so-called "Golden Age". So, when I learned about the upcoming release of "MANK", a biopic about Hollywood screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz, I was pretty eager to see it.
However . . . I never got the chance to watch "MANK" in movie theaters during the fall/winter of 2020-2021. "MANK" had the bad luck to be released while the entire world was in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Netflix had released the film in theaters for a limited period in November 2020, the streaming service/production company eventually released it on its streaming service the following month. Because of this, a good number of months had passed before I had eventually watched it on television. "MANK" began in 1940, when the then young wunderkind Orson Welles hired veteran screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz to write the screenplay for his new movie, "CITIZEN KANE". Unfortunately, Mankiewicz is in Victorville, CA; recovering from a broken leg he had sustained in a car crash. With the assistance of his secretary Rita Alexander, he becomes aware of the similarities between the movie's main character and newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. This awareness not only inspired Mankiewicz to work on Welles' screenplay, but also led him to recall his history with Hearst, the latter's mistress, Marion Davies; and the smear campaign against Upton Sinclair's 1934 California gubernatorial campaign. Since "MANK" is not a documentary, but a historical drama, I knew that its narrative would not be completely accurate. However, I do believe that screenwriter Jack Fincher and his brother, director David Fincher, took a lot of liberties in regard to historical accuracies. Perhaps too much. Yes, the movie featured historical accuracies that included Mankiewicz's car accident and broken leg, his employment with both Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Upton Sinclair's bid for Governor of California in 1934 and of course, Mankiewicz's collaboration with Welles and John Houseman on "CITIZEN KANE". However, the main problem with "MANK" is that Jack Fincher tried to connect the efforts to undermine Upton Sinclair's gubernatorial campaign with Mankiewicz's screenplay for "CITIZEN KANE". And it did not exactly work. It failed to work due to Mankiewicz's political beliefs. Considering that Sinclair had ran for governor as a Democrat, it seemed implausible that Mank would have been that upset over the state's business leaders - which included movie studio chief Louis B. Mayer, studio producer Irving Thalberg; and newspaper magnates like Hearst and Harry Chandler - going out of their way to undermine Sinclair's campaign. Mankiewicz's politics tend to skewer toward conservative, except when it came to fascism. It seems quite obvious that Jack Fincher needed an explanation for why Mankiewicz had been willing to write "CITIZEN KANE", a scathing portrait of William Randolph Hearst. So he invented one. But you know what? I find myself wondering what topic had really caught the Finchers' attention - Mankiewicz's connection with Hearst, Davies and "CITIZEN KANE"; or the 1934 California gubernatorial election. Because honestly . . . it seemed as if both screenwriter and director were more interested in the latter. If that was the case, then the Fincher brothers should have solely focused the movie's topic on the election. I have another quibble about "MANK". One I found some of the dialogue in the film's first half hour a bit too stylized for my tastes. In one early scene, it seemed as if the Finchers had tried too hard to recapture a West Coast version of the Algonquin Round Table. Also, why did the Finchers shot this film in black-and-white? What was the point? Because to me, this decision to film in black-and-white seemed like another attempt at a homage to Hollywood's Golden Age via a gimmick. And I am getting weary of gimmicks - especially unnecessary ones in Hollywood productions. Otherwise, I did not have a problem with "MANK". There are at least three reasons why I ended up enjoying this film. One, the movie featured a first-rate character study of Herman J. Mankiewicz. I have read a good deal about him. Granted, the movie was not completely honest in the writer's characterization. The latter's political beliefs would have never led him to get upset, let alone outraged over the campaign against Upton Sinclair. However, David Fincher's screenplay did a very admirable job in capturing Mankiewicz's other traits - including his wit, his addictions and air of weariness. If I must be frank, I believe Gary Oldman's superb performance achieved this even more than the Finchers' screenplay and direction. Two, although I found the creation of "CITIZEN KANE" rather interesting, it did not strike me as particularly unique. Well . . . I take that back. "MANK" did tell this story specifically from the screenwriter's point-of-view. The 1999 HBO film, "RKO 281", told this story mainly from Orson Welles' point-of-view. However, the movie's depiction of Hollywood's connection to California's 1934 gubernatorial election struck me as the film's more interesting and original aspect. This was especially apparent in scenes that featured a montage of the phony newsreels criticizing Sinclair and the election's final night. One aspect of "MANK" really impressed me - namely the performances featured in the film. They either ranged from competent performances from the likes of Tom Pelphrey as Joseph Mankiewicz, Charles Dance as William Randolph Hearst, Ferdinand Kingsley as Irving Thalberg, Joseph Cross as Charles Lederer, Toby Leonard Moore as David Selznick, Sam Troughton as John Houseman, Bill Nye as Upton Sinclair and Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer. Mind you, I believe there were times when Howard's performance threatened to become a bit too theatrical. But I still enjoyed it. I was very impressed by the performances from Tuppence Middleton as Sara Mankiewicz, Tom Burke as Orson Welles and Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies. As much as Seyfriend's performance impressed me, I do not believe she had deserved an Oscar or any other acting nomination for her performance. I do not believe her performance was that exceptional. There were a handful of performances that I really enjoyed. I thought Jamie McShane gave a very emotional performance as test director Shelly Metcalf, who shot the anti-Sinclair newsreels. Frankly, Lily Collins' performance as Mankiewicz's no-nonsense secretary Rita Alexander impressed me a lot more than Seyfriend's performance. And I thought she and the leading man had managed to create a superb screen chemistry. Although I believed that Seyfriend's acting nominations were undeserved, I cannot say the same for Gary Oldman's performance as Herman J. Mankiewicz. I thought he was superb as the screenwriting icon agonizing over his earlier apathy toward the governor's election, while struggling over his alcoholism and creation of the "CITIZEN KANE" screenplay. He truly deserved his acting nominations - especially in one scene in which the main character went into a drunken rant against the Hollywood machine and Hearst. "MANK" was definitely not the best movie of 2020. Perhaps it was one of the better ones. I still believe it could have been a better film if David and Jack Fincher had not attempted to connect the creation of "CITIZEN KANE" with California's 1934 governor election. But its re-creation of the latter proved to be one of the film's highlights. And the movie also benefited from excellent direction from David Fincher and excellent performances from a cast led by the always superb Gary Oldman. Honestly, I would have no qualms about buying a DVD copy of this film.
Review : Mank (2020)
Tumblr media
Tastes may have changed during the new millennium in regards to film, and while it may no longer stand alone as the film of films, there was a time when the Orson Welles epic Citizen Kane was almost a shoo-in for spot number one on best film lists.  By that rationale, making the decision to make a movie about the so-called ‘greatest film every made’ would seem like a bit of a fool’s errand... even more so when you take into account the many portrayals and stories that surround Orson Welles.  If one was to climb this seemingly unsurmountable mountain, the direct approach does not seem like the most rationale one, and it was this stroke of genius that more than likely led the prolific David Fincher to create a modern day masterpiece in the form of Mank.
After a car crash puts him in recovery from a broken leg, screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) is tasked by radio star turned director Orson Welles (Tom Burke) to write his next film, for which Welles has been given complete creative freedom by RKO Pictures.  While dictating the script to his secretary Rita Alexander (Lily Collins), Mankiewicz (affectionately referred to as Mank by his friends and peers) reminisces on his time at Paramount and MGM Studios, his relationships with studio head David O. Selznick (Toby Leonard Moore), newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance) and his mistress Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried), the political machinations of Irving Thalberg (Sam Troughton) to undermine Upton Sinclair’s (Bill Nye) run for Governor of California, his troubled relationship with MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer (Arliss Howard), and the death of his director colleague Shelly Metcalf (Jamie McShane).  Alexander immediately sees the comparisons in the script to Hearst, with whom Mank has a vendetta, yet despite warnings from all parties connected to the film and his life, Mank pushes forward in the creation of the controversial film.
Mank does a fantastic job of portraying a man with a healthy balance of personal demons and secretive actions that is dead set on writing a hit piece to bring down the man synonymous with American media.  As a writer and orator, Mank has a deep understanding and hidden fear in regards to the power of his words, and a regret that surfaces when these powerful words hurt those that he cares for.  With no true life-altering stakes on the table, the pressure in Mank is created by the limitations of an already outdated and stifled Hollywood machine sitting at the height of its powers, and the drive to create honest, moving art outside of said limitations.  As a man, Mank stands on principles built by a history of tangible changes he has made on the humble, and it is strengthened by the consistent backlash he faces for these actions, and the combination of these things leaves him with a visible and seething resentment for Hollywood.  Once Mank’s resolve is built up to the point that he can no longer be harmed, the focus turns toward punishment and manipulation of those close to him, which serves as a reminder of how the Hollywood system can find you irreplaceable in one moment and wholly disposable within the next.
On a subtext level, Mank is a movie about movies, and is hyper-conscious of the ‘script-to-screen’ process in a way that informs the narrative while also analyzing it deeply.  David Fincher manages to transport his cast (and in turn, us as viewers) to a completely different time, landing us somewhere between a reimagining of Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard and a dark take on Singin’ in the Rain.  The film also gives us insight into how creatives were able to wrestle creative independence away from a dominating and overwhelmingly controlling studio system.  Despite being a clear big budget, Hollywood-level production, the film is honest about the intentions of the Hollywood system, with Fincher’s version of Louis B. Mayer speaking directly about the commodification of emotions, be it Hollywood being “the business where the buyer gets nothing for his money but a memory”, or how “what he bought still belongs to the man who sold it.
As a film that examines a film which in turn examined an altered version of reality, the historical observations have surprising weight to them.  The way that Louis B. Mayer idolized the character and power of William Randolph Hearst is prominent throughout the film, giving viewers and film fans even more of an understanding why Citizen Kane was viewed as such a problematic film at the time it was released.  By comparison, Mayer was willing to ignore a similarly power hungry manipulator in the form of Adolph Hitler, but only due to how it would impact his German box office returns, and on no grounds of principle.  Mayer and Hearst also viewed Upton Sinclair as a direct threat, specifically due to how Sinclair portrayed Hearst in his prominent book The Jungle, so in turn, the duo found ways to undercut Sinclair socially and politically through the power of manipulated media : the social, entertainment, news and political power games the men created in the form of propaganda served to ruin Sinclair with no regard for the moral fallout it left on the studio side.  In turn, Mank’s attempt to take power back was crystalized in the form of his Citizen Kane script.
Mank is an attempt at an ambitious but subtle companion-piece to Citizen Kane that works surprisingly well, mainly due to the ways that its throwback style compliments Welles’ forward thinking innovation.  Despite being a modern day film, Fincher seemingly went through great lengths to present it in an old school manner... the film looks, sounds and feels like it used dated techniques, such as area mics, rear projection, visual expositional setups and a touch of German impressionism.  I personally found the ‘cigarette burns’ digitally-inserted (I’m guessing) at the end of each ‘reel’ a satisfying touch that almost nobody will notice.  The costuming, set design and score are deeply immersive... at times, I forgot that I was watching a film that was not even a year old.  Speaking of the score, the way that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were able to make it so period-specific is an achievement in its own right, as it brings an enhanced sense of life and attitude to our perception of the film, while informing on what we see in a way that many modern day films now shy away from.  The writing is snappy and witty, calling back to a bygone era without drowning in tropes, and giving the actors just enough to work with without venturing into the realms of overacting or chewing up the scenery.
Gary Oldman continues to display an amazing talent for completely inhabiting the skin of his characters, losing himself in a way that not many actors are able to, while leaving enough of himself in the performances for us to marvel at his abilities.  Amanda Seyfried is a pleasure to behold in Mank, with her incredible growth as an actress on full display, including a wonderfully entertaining Brooklyn accent.  Tom Burke does everything short of looking exactly like Orson Welles, capturing the youthful vigor and excitement of the director while also managing to display shades of the domineering character traits he became infamous for.  Arliss Howard and Charles Dance lean into their larger than life portrayals of powerful men with little to no regard for the ‘common man’.  Lily Collins serves as a dramatic foil to Oldman while managing to display deep personality traits of her own.  Other notable performances come from Tom Pelphrey, Ferdinand Kingsley, Jamie McShane, and a surprising appearance from Bill Nye, with Tuppence Middleton, Sam Troughton, Joseph Cross and a few others chipping in with strong support.
2020 has been a strange year for film, and as a lover of the theater experience, I’ve found that my viewing of films, especially new releases, took a severe nosedive this year.  I can say with complete honesty and certainty, however, that even if I’d seen every film of the year, I’d still stand behind my feelings that Mank is the film of the year.  I wholly expect it to clean up at every award show next year, and it will serve as a perfect benchmark when compared to other films of 2020 that I haven’t seen, specifically as to whether or not they are worth seeing.  David Fincher continues to make brilliant work, and even after a six year hiatus, he has returned like he never left.
For better or for worse, I have a job that is exempt - to a great degree - from the widespread need for isolation (in the world of news radio, the show must go on). However, I do get days off and thank goodness for that because my brain can only take so much constant pandemic talk.
So! I offer up ‘the ultimate music list’, something I started doing on YouTube last year. Maybe earlier. It’s a living list, it will never be complete. Anyway, listen to the way my music mind rambles! All songs listed on the other side of the keep reading line (not linked, you gotta do some of the work):
Silmarillion Writers’ Guild October Challenge: Start to Finish
Spend even five minutes reading advice on how to write powerful fiction, and you will likely encounter the concept of the hook: a first line or lines crafted to snare your reader into reading your story. Whether you believe in this advice or not, there are definitely books with first lines that leave the reader intrigued, puzzled, or awestruck, fitting overtures to some of the most powerful, profound novels written in English.
For this month's challenge, choose one of the famous first lines from the list below and use it to start your story. If you are creating a fanwork other than writing, you may use one of the first lines to inspire your fanwork. Challenge entries are due by November 10 in order to receive a stamp. As always, late entries are welcome but do not receive stamps.
Since you are using another author's first line, please credit the source in your story notes. Full challenge guidelines can be found on our website.
