Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 5]
continued from part 4
While this Edward Mills cannot be his father, it is an interesting connection. Perhaps that is his son. One death record listing notes four Millses, but no death record for Hollis, sadly:
Hollis was also on a jury in Colorado Springs in 1903.
I did find, however, a photo of Hollis in the 1920s:
Courtesy of page 31 of Images of America: Park County, assembled by the Park County Local History Archives, which has a resource file for the Mills family
Continuing the story, there are records showing an Edward E. Mills in Colorado in 1891 and 1896. I searched on Fulton History and got nothing! Thanks to the Park County Local History Archives, with their name index database, they had a whole list of photos of the Mills family provided by one Marguerite (Mills) Payne (who may be still living). One picture answers the question about who Elizabeth Chalmers, Ida Spindle, and Edward E. are:
Left to right: Edward Mills, Elizabeth Mortimer (became wife of Kenneth Chalmers), and Ida Mills (became wife of Berthelot Spindle). Source: Mills Family from Marguerite (Mills) Payne
This post was originally published on WordPress in February 2019.
Other image captions say:
"Edward Mills, son of Hollis Mills"
"Ida, Hollis and Marie Mills"
"Blanche Mills, wife of Hollis Mills"
"Edward Mills (left), son, and Hollis Mills (right), father, in front of guest house on Hartsel Ranch"
"Jean Marie and Margie Mills [obviously children of Edward E.] in front of Hartsel Ranch main house"
"Early 1930s. Hollis Mills, 2nd from left, and Edward at far right. Hollis was the manager of the Hartsel Ranch during the 1920s and until his death in 1934. He was prominent in the sheep industry. He was born in New York in 1877"
That goes further than knowing that Marjorie is in Windsor, Colorado by 1938. The 1940 census, as does her 1994 obituary, shows that Jean is the son of Edward E. Mills and Marie Bertha Steward, his wife, with all of them living in El Paso, Colorado. [8] All this leads to a revised rough chart:

have a lil skelek doodle
been thinking of him off and on while i work on other stuff
this is essentially how i imagine snaps first sees him - just hanging out all cute n comfy in a surface market
nicknames ive considered: spindle, weaver, needle
honestly been struggling a lot thinking of surface skeletons >:| don't have a reason for their bone colors. I think surface-skeletons are extremely uncommon to the point that many either are extinct in aus or are assumed to be extinct. This is due to a combination of reproductive issues [after losing the knowledge of how to access their souls] and also being hunted for their dust/for being spooky.
I imagine the folklore associated with surface!skeletons is like a mixture of elves, will-o-wisps, and general fairies. They usually live out and away from urban environments, forests being very common. Because of their negative human-interactions some of them became adept illusionists and enchanters.
Surface!skeletons like to dance with each other and use it a way of deeper communications. Usually accompanied by humming [either verbal or an effect of vibrating their bones.]
Spindle is from a family that specializes in needlecraft. He can spin threads with different charms/enchantments from his own magic - the thread extending down his spine to be pulled from the tip of his tail. He can then embroider, using either pre-spun threads, or directly from his tail, more advanced spellwork.
He can weave, but he doesn't often and it isn't his specialization. It takes him the most effort, with the warp being done with raw magic from his tail and the weave done with a combination of raw and pre-spuns.
His enchantments can be used for: illusions/glamour [like Kelek's seal, though Kelek's is a metal bracer on his tail made by a different kind of monster, Kelek has never met a surface skeleton in his au].
This doesn't extend only to disguises. Spindle's work can glow or emit different effects for aesthetical reasons. Since magic also functions as a way of communicating, Spindle's work can also reflect this. His strongest charms tend to go to those he cares for just as a result of that extra emotion fed into the process. His gifts tend to subtly emit what he was feeling for the person when he crafted it.
Spindle lives alone in an urban surface-monster community; meaning he lives around humans which is highly unusual. The community he settled down in didn't have great access to an enchanter so he stayed behind when his family passed through. He very very very rarely goes around humans. If he's not at the surface market then he's home. He lives in a basement apartment under a family friend who usually gets Spindle anything that he might not be able to find in the monster-market.
edit: forgot to say - considered having his magic also be a form of prosthesis. so if a monster lost a limb then: Spindle would weave/embroider/spin thread for another artisan with the expected result being an ecto-version of the lost limb.
#longer than i planned lmao#but i like him#also i love the word spindle so thats probably gonna be his nick#skdjs which is funny bc#s#kelek posting#skelekins speaks#skeleton kelek#spindle kelek#i imagine he is so O//////////O when he meets snaps [or any other skeleton 👀]#bc he has never met another skeleton outside his family#hes probably even more shy than kelek

I’m glad we agree that Deerleap and Archeye were mates lol
I finished my Shadow tree if you’d like me to dm it for ideas? I don’t know if it was blurry for you last time or not
I think Nightwing and Wildfur would be siblings though! And I gave Happykit the suffix Happydance, he does a little jig after every successful hunt
I saw it! Dw!
Yeah Deer and Arch feel right to me too. I've always seen Arch with some brown on him and Deer has "white legs" which I think translates well into Mudfoot's brown legs.
Night and Wildfur are siblings in authorial statements and I was going to make them related too, but then I realized... I'm drawing Wild, White, and Kink as all being fucking ridiculously fluffy. They should be related.
I could make them cousins still but something feels right about them being related. I may break them into 2 litters, Kink/White being sisters and Wild/Night being siblings. But I'm unsure.
#The easiest thing in a family tree to make thr cats less related is to do 2 kit litters#When you're working with limited names I mean#This wouldn't be an issue if I was freely making OCs but my personal rule is to justify each addition#Like Spindle Smog Ermine and the Silverflame Extras

June: Mine in Nine
A month of discovery, dedication and delight~
this june has been very busy for me. I have been experimenting with plying yarns and new fibre types and even wove a scarf.
i have also been looking into the family tree along side the host and saiph (former host alter) and i have been so fascinated by it all. in a couple of branches i have managed to trace back to generations born around 1660. one was a serge weaver, a type of woollen cloth made in somerset with a twill weave pattern.
i also have done a lot of volunteering at the museum and i have even got someone to begin spinning like me. i also have had some very kind feedback from the public, believing i was a member of staff, rather than a volunteer. additionally i helped move and relaunch an art exhibit i helped create and curate back in february with the lovely three lead artists and i was brave and went to a scary large city (nottingham)

Best Reads of 2022! 📚
Hey guys! These are the best books I read this year. I have to say, having looked at my old posts, it was really nice to see that I read a lot more and met my reading goal of 20 books! A lot went on this year but I’m proud that I was still able to do what I love.
I read some wonderful books from new authors (like Olivia Atwater) as well as favourite authors such as Alix E. Harrow. I also read some lovely manga too and discovered Spy X Family (which is so wholesome and I need more!).
I’m glad that I read a lot of great Asian fiction too. I think it’s become a favourite genre of mine, reading different stories inspired by Asia history or fairytales.
I can’t wait to see what my reading looks like in 2023!

Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 3]
continued from part 2
Now, the necessary link is from Hollis R. Mills to Edward E. Mills (1848-1918). Hollis is not living in the household of Edward and Edna in 1900, whom are living in Lincoln, Colorado, United States at the time with two lodgers. [5] This census also estimates their marriage date as 1871. A New York State Census of 1892 lists a "Mabel E Mills" but this person is a daughter of Henry C. Mills and Annie Mills, so I'm not sure they are related. Reportedly Hollis had a sister named Stella whom was born in 1880, but I can't find anything about here more than what is claimed in varied genealogies online.
I held out hope that the 1880 census would mention this connection. [6] The first page Family Search sent me to was discouraging as it only listed Edward and his wife Edna, but no children. The next page mentions an Ira Whitney with a Robert Mills, a laborer, in the household, obviously RBM I. But why is Edward and Edna's child not mentioned? That seems strange to say the least. It brings up all sorts of questions. We know that Hollis is living in a similar area to Edward and Edna in 1900 but this still does not prove a connection conclusively.
However, we do have photos of Edna Russell and her son Hollis Mills and his wife Blanche Ellis, which is great, thanks to a descendant on FamilySearch, mikespindle:
